Thomas Merton Chapter 10

Morgan didn't have to wait long to know his fate, because, as luck would have it, Garcia answered on the first ring.

"Hello?"

"Hey…Baby girl" Morgan said hesitantly.

"What's going on, hot stuff?" she asked.

"Sweetie, there's something I need to tell you" he began.

"What's wrong Muffin?"

"Well…um…Garcia, Reid got sick with a migraine and I had to take him to the hospital" Morgan said quickly.

"What?!" Garcia exclaimed, "…but you said…DEREK JOSEPH MORGAN! You lied to me?! Me, of all people?!"

"Penelope, let me explain…We thought we had handled it with medication, but then it came back worse and I didn't have time to call you and tell you he had gotten worse. I had to get him to the hospital, baby, please don't be mad" he said, rambling.

There was a pause on the other line.

"Well? How is he?" Garcia asked.

Morgan breathed a sigh of relief.

"They've got him on an IV because he was dehydrated, and they're running tests to try and figure out why he's having these migraines."

At that moment, a man approached Morgan.

"Baby girl, I gotta go, the doctor's here."

"Okay, you can update me when I get there" Garcia said before hanging up the phone.

Morgan groaned before he turned to the doctor. He knew he was gonna be in for a lecture when she got there.

"Are you with Spencer Reid?" the doctor asked.

Morgan nodded, gesturing for him to continue.

"I was going to talk to Spencer about his test results…" the doctor began.

"Wait," Morgan interrupted, "you got the results back already? It's only been an hour."

"We rushed the results because he was in so much pain."

Morgan nodded. "What did you find?" he asked.

"Well," the doctor said, hesitating, "every test came back negative. Physically, the only thing wrong that we can find is the dehydration."

"What?" Morgan asked, confused, "…but- but that can't be! These migraines have to be caused by something! Can't you see how much pain he's in?!"

"I'm saying there's no physical cause for these migraines." The doctor paused before looking seriously at Morgan.

"Do you know if he has past drug history?" The doctor asked.

"What do you mean? You…what, you think he's a drug addict? No!" Morgan exclaimed, getting angry.

He did have that problem with Dilaudid, but that was such a long time ago…and he wasn't about to tell the doctor that- he thought.

"Does he have a history of mental illness in his family?"

"…His mom has schizophrenia…but that has nothing to do with any of this!"

"Look," the doctor said, "I think your friend needs help. Psychiatric help."

Inside the hospital room, Reid lay wide awake.

He had heard every word.

Morgan walked into the hospital room and stopped short.

"Reid, you're awake" he said, smiling.

Reid nodded.

"Still have the migraine?"

"Yeah. It's backed off a little, but it's still there."

"I talked to the doctor while you were asleep" Morgan began.

Reid interrupted him. "I wasn't asleep. I heard everything he said."

Morgan looked up at him, but didn't say anything.

Reid paused. "Do you…do you believe him?"

When Morgan didn't answer, Reid looked at him. "You agree with him" he accused.

"No, Reid, I don't. But…I just think that maybe…maybe it would do you good to talk to someone. Maybe these headaches are stress-related…" Morgan trailed off as Reid sat up, ripping the IV out of his arm.

"Reid, what are you doing?"

"I'm getting out of this hospital, because apparently, I'm not sick."

"Reid, stop" Morgan said, putting a hand on his arm.

"No, Morgan. I thought, maybe, you would believe me over some doctor. I told you that they would say that there was no physical cause for my migraines. You didn't listen to me then, and you're not listening to me now. How am I supposed to trust you to help me, when you don't believe me?"

"Reid," Morgan said, blocking Reid's path, "I do believe you, but this job is hard on all of us and has been hard on you especially. You said so yourself! You told me that you keep losing everyone you love, not mention the fact that you have been hurt on this job too many times for me to count!"

"Don't you throw my words back in my face, Morgan! You said I was like your little brother, that I should let my family help me. Well, you're not acting like much of a brother right now."

He pushed Morgan aside and left the room.

"Reid" Morgan called. He went to follow Reid, but became dizzy and had to grab onto the wall to steady himself.

When Morgan caught his balance, he went out into the hallway, but Reid was nowhere to be found.

Walking over to the desk, Morgan asked the nurses if they had seen Reid.

"Yes, he just walked out."

"Dammit" he said, bracing his hands on the counter.

"Sir, are you alright?" one of the nurses asked, "You look a little green."

Morgan swallowed and nodded.

The person's voice he heard next made him cringe.
"Derek, where is Reid?" Garcia asked, walking up to him.

"Garcia, he-he left. He just walked out."

"What? Morgan, why didn't you stop him? Why'd you let him leave?"

"Baby girl, I didn't…The doctor said there was nothing physically wrong with him, said we should get him psychiatric help. I said maybe it wouldn't hurt for Reid to talk to someone, maybe the headaches were stress-related…he got pissed, ripped out the IV and walked out" Morgan said, trying to keep from getting sick. Why was he getting sick?

"Seriously, Derek? Why aren't you looking for him?"

Garcia's voice bled into one constant stream of complaints before Morgan couldn't take it anymore.

"Penelope! Please stop! I just- I can't…" Morgan tried to get out, but his vision was tunneling down.

"Sir, are you alright? Sir!" was the last thing he heard before he passed out.

So, what'd you think? Didn't see that coming did you? Reviews please!
