Chapter Nine
Meg smiled at herself as she looked in the mirror in her room. She took her hair and put it up in a full bun. She slowly put on her white dress. Tonight was the night of the masquerade and she was very excited! She was hoping she would get to see Erik again. It had been two months since she had seen and heard from him. She let out a sigh. It seemed as if Erik no longer cared for her anymore. All he cared about was Christine.
She could not blame him though. Christine was sweet girl who loved everyone. She was also very beautiful. Meg often felt intimidated because she was so gorgeous. She shook her head. Being jealous was not going to help her get Erik back. She knew that.
Once she was done putting the dress, she grabbed her masked and walked out the door. It was time for her to make her descent down the stairs, and make everyone see her as the swan that she truly was.
After a few minutes, she and her mother reached the bottom of the staircase. They parted from each other. A gentle touch on her shoulder made her turn around. She smiled at the gentleman.
"May I have this dance?" He asked.
She nodded. "Of course, Erik," she replied as her grin widened.
He took her hand and led her to the dance floor. They started dancing with each other. They both stared into each other's eyes. They seemed unaware of anything else but each other. They continued to dance.
Meg took in Erik's appearance. He looked quit handsome. He was wearing a black and white face mask and a nice tuxedo. She closed her as she listened to him hum to the music.
The next thing she knew, he took he started leading her in another direction. She laughed and smiled. She allowed him to take her wherever he wanted to go.
They passed by Christine and Raul, but Meg did not care. Erik was hers. For this moment at least and that made her happy.
He took her a closer to her mother. He gave her a quick kiss on the lips. "Stay here," he told her.
"Why?" She asked.
"Just stay. Please," replied. He looked at her eyes.
She nodded at him. "Hurry back."
He nodded then disappeared.
"Who was that?" Her mother asked.
Meg was about to respond when suddenly the entire ballroom darkened. The statues started to move. Erik walked down the stairs. He had changed his cloak and mask rather quickly. He now had a mask that was gold and shaped like a skeleton. His cloak was red and he had a sword in his hand.
Meg could only watch in horror, as he began to threaten the people how to run the Opera House with a sword. She felt her heartbreak, when he took the engagement ring that Christine wore as a necklace away. His eyes met hers then he fell underneath trapdoor. Raul jumped in after him. He mother disappeared soon afterward.
After a few moments, Meg slowly went to her room. She felt numb as she walked. She opened the door then slammed it. She sat on her bed, grabbed her pillow, and cried herself to sleep.
