AN: First off, I just wanna say that last chapter was not really a chapter. It was kinda a fluffy thing that just fit there, so I put it in. Don't think that it's gonna change the story at all! Also, I'm incredibly sorry for not getting this up sooner and that it's so short. I started school and band and was traveling like crazy so I'm really sorry. Please review! It will make me so happy and stress-free.
Chapter 10: Crazy town
When Spock woke up just in time for Alpha shift, he felt a though he had forgotten something. He had an eidetic memory, yet it felt as though he was forgetting something. That could not be right though, because he did not forget anything. Spock completed his morning routine and walked to the mess still contemplating what he was forgetting. He reached the mess hall, and all thoughts about it flew from his mind as he saw Jim. Jim was standing at the replicator getting coffee and he looked incredibly tired. Did Jim sleep last night? Spock found himself wondering. He mentally shook himself as he approached him.
"Good Morning, Captain." Spock said in his normal monotone voice.
Jim jumped a little and turned.
"Geezus, Spock, don't sneak up on people like that." Jim exclaimed, adding under his breath so Spock didn't hear, "Stupid sneaky Vulcans, always looking so perfect."
Spock looked at Jim oddly (he had not heard the last part) and said, "I did not have the intention of startling you, Captain, and for that I will ask. Did you not notice me walking into the mess?"
Jim looked up, and again Spock saw that he was indeed looking incredibly tired, almost as though he hadn't slept the night before.
"I did, I just wasn't paying good enough attention I s'pose," Jim yawned in reply, moving to retrieve his coffee.
"Forgive me, Captain, but it seems as though you are more fatigued than what I have observed on mornings previous."
"Well, you've got that right Spock. I can't sleep properly with that bastard on my ship." Jim replied, moving to go sit down.
"If you will permit it, may I dine with you this morning, Captain", Spock asked as he moved up to replicate his food.
"Sure thing, Spock," Jim replied as he walked away. He sat down on a table at the edge of the mess, away from all the hubbub in the center. Spock quickly ordered his food, retrieved it and followed to where Jim sat.
"So, Spock, have you been watching that good for nothing sonofa..., "Jim cut himself off before he became more enraged.
"Yes, Captain," he replied, "You requested that I do so."
"You're the best Spock, you know that right," Jim said after taking a long drink of coffee. "If I had asked anyone else they probably wouldn't have done it, so thanks."
"Thanks are illogical, Captain."
"Indeed they are, and would it kill you to use my name every once in a while."
"Captain, death by unprofessionalism is not logical."
Jim laughed and Spock felt as though a weight had been lifted off his shoulders. Oh, to hear Jim's laugh.
"Thanks, Spock, I needed that," he said when he stopped laughing.
"To what are you referring, Captain, I merely stated a logical assumption, and it is unknown to me as to why you are laughing." Spock said, knowing that this would just make Jim laugh even harder.
"Ahhh, Spock, stop, I swear your trying to kill me," Jim replied when he finally stopped laughing.
"I sincerely doubt that you will die of mirth, Captain." Spock continued to make comments, similar trying to cheer Jim up before they went on shift. All too soon it was 0800, and both Spock and Jim reported to the bridge. The rest of the command crew had already relieved their counterparts, so the bridge was silent when they walked in.
"Good Morning!" Jim called to his crew, who responded enthusiastically, as they were happy that their Captain as in a good mood despite what had happened yesterday. The shift started, and the first half was completely uneventful, which while surprising was not unwelcome. The minute Spock got off for the lunch hour, he went back to his quarters to see what was happening with Kodos.
He checked the security footage and found that someone had hacked the system and implanted a running loop over the "actor's" quarters. He removed the loop to find Kodos and his daughter arguing.
(Over the microphone in the camera)… believe you did that! What are you, stupid? I have to turn you in now!" Kodos was shouting.
"But I had to protect you, we had to be free!" Lenore shouted back.
"But thre…" Kodos stopped abruptly as Lenore held up her hand.
"I put in a loop, but I know how smart these people can be, so don't say anything too incriminating," she said, looking straight at the camera. "As it is they may have already heard us."
"What you just told me was extremely incriminating," Kodos replied glaring at his daughter, then at the camera.
"Yes, it was, but I had just put the loop on, so I had a few seconds before they found out about the loop."
Kodos shook his head. "I'm sure they've found out by now, and if what you told is true, it still doesn't cover the fact that they're probably suspicious. Damnit, Lenore."
"I am sorry, Father, but they were investigating you, and I had to do something."
"Well, let's hope for our sakes that they haven't heard, and that we are proceeding as usual."
Spock stopped the security footage and thought about what he had heard.
Why would Kodos' daughter act in such an appalling manner? What was she telling her father when the footage was being looped? He asked himself, pondering it over. Then it came to him.
Spock stood up, and proceeded to walk to Jim's cabin and buzz for entry. He heard a quiet, "Come in," and he walked into the room where his Captain was sitting at his desk filling out paper work.
He looked up and saw Spock standing there, and said, "Ah, Spock, what can I do you for?"
Naturally Spock was confused, considering Jim's use of slang. He tilted his head slightly to the side, and opened his mouth to respond when Jim said, "It means, what did you come to tell me."
"How did you know that I was about to tell you something, Captain?" Spock asked, now more confused.
"Oh, I realized that I had said that, and I know that sometimes you have trouble with slang, so figured you could use some help."
"I see."
"Anyway, why did you want to see me Spock? It can't be about anything too important, as you would have told me when we were on shift, so..." he said, leaving the end of the question trailing.
Spock looked at Jim skeptically, well, as skeptically as he could with a completely blank face. "I came to inform you that Anton Karidian and his daughter installed a subroutine in the cameras. I fixed the problem, but I was not able to hear what they had said. They were arguing about a threat to a person I am assuming to be part of the crew."
"Shit!" Jim replied, "I was specifically hoping that they wouldn't be the ones behind this."
"Sir?"
"I believe that one, or both of them are behind the poisoning of Kev, and are now plotting to kill me."
"Indeed."
