True Lies

Chapter 10:

By: Michelle2

Well, it had been 10 years. Time to get this story out of my head.

Note: This is the third part of a trilogy. Part 1: The Truth Hurts. Part 2: Sweet Little Lies.

As always: I don't own the characters or make money off my fanfics. I enjoy having fun.

Friday evening…

Rogue listened to the machines in the lab beep in steady rhythm, while Remy lay unconscious in the bed. She should have said something earlier to friends and teammates, but instead she let him get his vices out of his system.

When it came to Remy, his smoking was her pet peeve. Hank ordered Logan to sniff out all the cigarettes in the mansion, and while she wanted her boyfriend to wake up, she knew he wouldn't be in a pleasant mood unless he had a cigarette.

She watched his chest rise and fall with each breath. He looked so peaceful in the bed, but she was concerned about what was going on in his head. Their relationship was not an easy one. The guilt from speaking to Sabretooth weighed on her.

Why didn't he just tell about Paris? Did he tell Belladonna? Was honesty that hard? Why…Why did she listen to Sabretooth, of all people?

Remy clenched his fists, and his chest rose. The machines hooked up to him increased their beeps. Then, he grabbed his neck, screaming for his life.

X****************XMEN********************X

"Here you go, Furball," Logan said as he dumped two dozen cigarette packets on the desk.

"My stars and garters," Hank shook his head. "Where did you find all these?"

"Half came from his bedroom, a couple were in his classrooms, Rogue's purse (if she knew), and the rest were stashed around the mansion," Logan picked one up. "Hell, I even found one in an old VCR."

Hank shook his head in disgust. "That's it. No more smoking on school grounds."

"Come on, Furball. You can't be serious."

"I am," Hank said, gathering all the cartons of cigarettes.

"That's just for the Cajun, right."

"No, all of you. No one is dying of cancer on my watch," Hank replied. "This, my friend, is ridiculous."

"You do realize the Cajun is going to have withdrawals."

"Yes, I do," Hank replied. He looked around the room, thinking of a place Remy wouldn't dig to find the cigarettes until he could dispose them properly. "And, I have a plan."

Logan growled at the sound of the machines beeping in the next room. "Someone is up."

X****************XMEN********************X

"Hello, Romeo." Sabretooth's dark eyes stared at him from across the room. "Fancy meeting you here. But I guess we are the same."

Remy scrambled out the lab bed. He was still hooked to the machines. He felt trapped like a lab rat that took the wrong corner in a maze.

"How's your brother?"

Remy ripped out his IV and the probs hooked to his body. His employer didn't react to the scene; he just stared at his notes of all his experiments.

"I've been waiting for you to come."

Sabretooth pounced on him faster than he could react, grabbing him by the neck. The more he struggled to get free, the more the sharp claws dug into his neck.

Remy jumped out of bed, but his weak condition brought him quickly to the floor.

"Remy. Remy…" her sweet voice echoed in his head.

The room spun. "Rogue!" He hollered. Fear washed over him. Was she there with Sabretooth? Did he hurt her? He would die if he hurt her.

"Remy, I'm here."

He felt her touch his shoulder. "Where is he?" he asked, his eyes slowly taking focus of his surroundings.

"Who?" Rogue stooped next to him. She tried to be calm, but she wasn't fooling him.

"Sabretooth."

"He's locked up, Remy," her green eyes sparkled, but the circles under her eyes said even more. She had been crying…crying because of him. "You are in the med-lab."

"Med-lab?"

"You're in the med-lab," she assured him. "It's just us."

"Us," Remy focused on her. A tear escaped when she blinked.

Rogue nodded. "Yeah, us."

Remy looked around. He was in one of the many rooms that served as a hospital at Xavier's Institute. "How did Remy git here?" He settled his gaze on her.

Rogue smiled at his use of third person, but her tone was serious when she replied, "Ya passed out during the Danger Room session."

"Remy did."

"Yep, and put a big dent in the floor," Logan added as he and Hank walked in the room.

"How is our patient doing?" Hank asked.

Remy ignored both of them. His eyes locked with Rogue's as she helped him stand. "Je suis désolé, Rogue."

Another tear rolled down her cheek, and Remy went to reach for it, but was interrupted.

"Ahem!"

Rogue wiped the tear away with her gloved hands.

Thanks a lot, homme. Remy turned to Hank, whom stepped over to examine him.

"Rogue, why don't you get Remy and yourself something to eat," Hank said, checking all of Remy's vitals.

Rogue was hesitant to move, but Logan ushered her away.

X****************XMEN********************X

Rogue ran her gloved hands through her hair.

"He's going to be alright, Stripes," Logan said.

But his words weren't much of a comfort. He spoke to her like he had rehearsed that line in his head. It was something to say when things got tough. She knew. She absorbed him enough to know what he thought about when it came time to being emotional or sympathetic.

"Thanks," Rogue replied. She looked down at her gloved hands. She felt so powerful and powerless. Nothing seemed to make sense to her.

Logan seemed to want to say more to her, like a father trying to speak to his little girl going on her first date. She didn't need to absorb him to understand that.

"Heh," he managed to open his mouth long enough for something to come out.

Rogue felt his hand on her shoulder. He was careful where his placement was but loving like a father. She stopped in her tracks; her vision blurred as tears swelled in her eyes.

"He's going to be alright."

They stood there for a moment. Neither of them knew what to do or what else to say.

"Logan. Rogue."

Ororo's voice snapped them from their silence.

"Hey, 'Ro," Logan's attention turned to the weather goddess.

"I heard he is up," Ororo said. She smiled at Rogue, trying not to show her own concerns. "I need to talk to him."

Rogue took a deep breath to compose her tears. "Hank's examining him. He sent me to get him something to eat."

"Doctor's orders." Ororo nodded in agreement.

Rogue excused herself, and Logan watched as she walked down the hallway and got in the elevator. "What's wrong with her?" he asked.

"She's in love."

X****************XMEN********************X

Hank shined a light in Remy's eyes.

"Must ya do dat. My eyes be sensitive," Remy complained. "And my head is killin' me," he pinched his brow as Hank continued his examination.

"Considering we all heard the back of your head hit the Danger Room floor, yes," Hank replied. "I'm not surprised. Alcohol and cigarettes aren't a part of the four food groups. You're dehydrated. Thankfully, you weren't on a mission."

"I don't need ya ta lecture me," Remy answered.

'No, you don't."

Remy looked up, and Hank turned around. Ororo stood in the doorway.

"Lecturing you is part of my job."

X****************XMEN********************X

Kurt watched Sabretooth as he ate dinner. The man was crouched in the corner ripping apart a raw steak. He was thankful he wasn't in the cell with him. He enjoyed the protection of bars.

"Whatcha thinking about, Elf?" Logan asked.

Kurt hadn't heard his friend sneak in the holding area. They had both warned each other about Sabretooth, but they were both too stubborn to take each other's advice. "I finally understand vhy Ororo is a vegetarian," he said as Logan stood beside him.

Logan stuck a cigar in him mouth. He was tempted to light it, but he didn't need Hank demanding his cigar stash.

"You know vhen I came to ask him vhat he vanted for dinner, he told me a bazket of puppiez," Kurt closed his eyes in disgust of the mental image. "How did my mutter marry zis man?"

"I'm good in the sack," a low growl came from the corner.

Kurt wanted to gag. He really didn't want to know that.

"You shouldn't be here, Kurt," Logan pulled his arm to go. "Come on. You don't need to listen to anything he says"

Kurt couldn't help but stare. Sabretooth creeped slowly from the corner and approached the bars.

"Hello Sonnyboy," Sabretooth's black eyes glared at him like a piece of meat. "Here's DADDY!"

Kurt stepped back.

"Kurt, you need to leave," Logan warned him.

"Nein, I don't," Kurt clenched his fists. Sabretooth was getting a rise out of him and he didn't want to fight it.

"Kurt."

"Logan."

"Let the boy talk, Wolverine," Sabretooth snarled. Blood from the steak covered his lips. "A boy needs a father."

"Du bist nicht mein vater," Kurt replied.

"Coulda been."

Kurt's heart raced.

"Elf, we need to leave now."

"What for Wolverine? You afraid of something," Sabretooth paced in front the bars. "Boy has the right to know."

"Know vat?" Kurt was intrigued. He knew he shouldn't trust the man, but his voice hypnotized him. He had to know.

Sabretooth dug a piece of steak out his teeth with his claw and then ate it. "That your mother is a whore."

X****************XMEN********************X

"Hank, could you give us a minute," Ororo demanded more than asked.

"Sure," Hank stepped away.

As he lay in bed, Remy stared at the angry weather goddess. His head pounded more than it did before. "Sup Stormy," he gave her his best devilish grin.

"I'm not amused."

Remy folded his arms. "So…start da lecture."

"First, you are on probation," Ororo sighed. "Professor Xavier and I are upset about you teaching in your condition. You have a meeting with him tomorrow afternoon….What were you thinking?"

He looked at the IV hooked in his hand. "I wasn't."

"No, you weren't. You put those kids in danger," Ororo informed him. "When you are in the classroom, you are responsible for the safety of the students."

"I know," Remy couldn't look up at her. He knew she was right.

"Second, you are suspended from missions for two weeks."

"Fine," Remy's head throbbed. "What else?"

"What else, what?" Ororo asked. "What do you want me to say? You know how worried we all were?"

Remy played with the IV line.

"Are you going to answer me?"

Remy glared at her with fire in his eyes. "I'm sorry. Is dat what ya want? I git it, Stormy. I screwed up. I screwed up everythin'. Dat's all I'm good at."

Ororo sat on the edge of the bed. "I'm assuming this has to do with Rogue."

"She talked Sabretooth," Remy admitted. "I should have talked to her about Paris when she asked, but she went to Sabretooth. Sabretooth got to her…got in her head…and he got her."

"No, Remy," Ororo shook her head and patted his knee shaking. "He got to you. You let Sabretooth get to you."

X****************XMEN********************X

"Damnit," Rogue fussed as she pulled two sets of burnt toast out the toaster oven. She wasn't good at cooking anything. That was always Remy's area of expertise.

"What'd you burn?" Bobby asked as he entered the room. "We can smell it all the way to the movie room."

Rogue tossed the bread into the garbage. "I'm sorry…I just…"

"Are you okay?" Bobby asked.

Rogue looked at him. Her eyes were red and heavy. She had been crying off and on since she left Remy's side. "I'm fine…I'm just…"

"You don't have to explain yourself if you don't want," Bobby said. "Do you need any help?"

"Yeah, that would be nice."

Bobby grabbed all the cold items out the refrigerator. It was clear she was a mess. She couldn't think straight enough to put a sandwich together. "You have the toaster oven too hot."

"Oh."

"How's…how's Remy?"

Rogue listened to the toaster oven tick. "He's awake. Hank wants him to eat before he is discharged."

"They said he was dehydrated," Bobby mentioned. He placed deli meats, cheese, and mayonnaise on the counter.

Rogue nodded.

"Rogue, he's going to be okay," Bobby assured her. He stood by her side, lingering inches from her. His proximity brought goosebumps on her skin.

"It's my fault, Bobby," Rogue replied. She pulled the lightly toasted bread out of the toaster oven. 'I pushed him to much…and I talked to Sabretooth…and he was so angry at me…I…I love him…and now…I don't know if he even…"

Bobby embraced her. "Rogue, it's going to be okay."

X****************XMEN********************X

Lorna Dane buried her head in her textbook, trying to ignore the movie playing down the hall. Out of all the movies they could have watched, Talia and Clarice chose Frozen. She watched it several times—once on date with Bobby Drake—but listening to a pair of five year olds parrot the movie wasn't enjoyable.

"I thought this is where you snuck off to."

Lorna lowered the textbook. "I love my niece, but the girl can't sing."

Alex laughed. "Whose idea was it to put on Frozen?" He sat in the chair across from her.

"Bobby's," she replied. "My vote was for Moana."

Alex smiled. "You know it is a Friday. You don't have to do any school work."

Lorna closed the book and placed it on her lap. "I know. I was just thinking about what Dr. McCoy said about me going to school. If everything works out, I could start in the spring. It's mid-October, and registration is mid-November. I haven't even looked at what classes I could take—you know—ones that aren't online. I just…"

"Need to relax."

"How? How can I relax?" Lorna said. "I'm so nervous."

"I think everything will work out," Alex assured her. He placed his hand on hers.

Lorna blushed. Perhaps he was right.

While he held his hand on hers, she wondered about her life. Could she have a life outside of house arrest…something outside of the mansion. Could she have everything she wanted or envied? There were a handful of guys her age that stayed at the mansion. Could she have a relationship or attend parties and introduce someone as her boyfriend? Was he thinking about her?

Alex opened his mouth to asked her something, but it wasn't what she expected. "Do you smell burnt toast?"

X****************XMEN********************X

Sabretooth dug a piece of steak out his teeth with his claw and then ate it. "Your mother is a whore. I didn't mind sharing her though. The more experience she got, the better she was in the sack. Ask your buddy? She was good, wasn't she, Wolverine?

"Who needs love when you got lust?" Sabretooth teased. "She's got that scent you can't get out of your head, ain't that right Wolverine?'

"Elf, you need to leave. I might have to teach someone some manners," Logan's claws slowly extended.

"I'm not going anyvhere," Kurt replied. He hated what he was hearing, but Sabretooth had hooked him.

"Kurt. Leave."

"Come on, Wolverine. Can't we all get along," Sabretooth said. "Mystique would want us to be good co-parents. Gotta teach the boy about the birds and the bees because that no good father of his ain't around."

"Vhat are you talking about?" Kurt asked.

"Elf!"

Sabretooth smirked. "Guess your buddy didn't tell you. He fucked your mom, too."

Kurt turned to Logan. They had been friends since he came to mansion. He was his best man at his wedding to Ororo. He was his daughter's uncle. "Zhat's not true."

"Is it?" Sabretooth chuckled, stepping away from the bars. "Think about it."

"Elf," Logan paused. He didn't know what to say to his friend, and he knew Kurt sensed.

"Nein," Kurt shook his head. Sabretooth continued to laugh in the background.

"Think about it, boy."

"Elf, it was a long time ago," Logan dared to explain.

'Nein, I zon't vant to hear it."

"I couldn't remember."

"Couldn't remember. Vouldn't remember. Not-zing but excuzzes," Kurt huffed down the hallway, leaving Sabretooth behind and Logan trailing after him.

"Kurt. Stop. We need to talk about this."

"Vhy?" Kurt turned, and Logan halted inches from him. "You are my friend. Vhy vouldn't you tell me? Zo I could hear it from him."

"No."

"Zen vat?" Kurt's accent thickened. He was so angry that tears burned his eyes. Before Logan could react, Kurt punched him in the face.

X****************XMEN********************X

"No, Remy," Ororo shook her head and patted his knee shaking. "He got to you. You let Sabretooth get to you."

Sabretooth's laughter filled the air. Gambit ran down the steps of the cathedral with his shaky brother behind him. "Ginny," he said, finding her at the bottom of the steps. "Mon Dieu…I never thought…"

Genevieve's eyes fluttered at him as examined her broken body. "Remy…I …did love you. I would have…given…given it to you…if you asked."

Her eyes closed, and Henri placed a hand on his shoulder.

"We gotta go," Henri said as sirens drowned out Sabretooth's laughter.

Remy closed his eyes. "I hate that man, Ororo."

"You are not the only one," Ororo replied. "He's been bothering Kurt and Logan and making the students uncomfortable all week."

"Den why he still here," Remy's face hardened. "Ya lecturin' me 'bout puttin' de kids in danger. "Toothy's been down dere almost a week."

"We are working on transferring him," Ororo sighed and changed the subject. "I talked to your father."

"Ya did," Remy leaned back in the bed. "Why?"

"Actually, I called Henri, but your father answered the phone," Ororo explained. "I called to tell them about your incident. Your family is worried. I mentioned Sabretooth, and he told me about Paris."

Remy sighed. "So ya know too."

"Professor X too," Ororo added. "Your father was loud enough for him to hear. Professor X is talking to Frost now to get Sabretooth transferred out of the mansion. Like I said, we are working on it."

Remy folded his arms. His IV made it awkward. "Frost still wants me ta talk ta him"

"Yes."

"I ain't stupid enough ta get in a room alone wit him," Remy replied. "Did ya tell her dat?"

"With your current state…" Ororo held his leg from shaking. "Remy, we are making the arguments against any of us to be near him."

"Merci."

'But there is something else I want to talk to you about. Something your father mentioned."

X****************XMEN********************X

"I am sorry, Emma Frost," Professor Xavier explained. "But that is not how I run my school or the X-men."

Emma Frost stormed out of Xavier's office. She couldn't understand how he had faith in all the people around him. He would protect his students and teachers. He would protect his X-men.

The halls filled with students—some headed to the rec room for games, some for movie night, and others to bed. The school was a sweet little family, something money could never buy her.

She spent most of her life trying to prove herself to others. Why did she think this place would be any different? When Nick Fury agreed to let her handle the Sabretooth case, she thought it would be a way to prove herself valuable…valuable to others just as much as herself.

She turned the corner of the hall to run smack into Scott Summers. She tumbled to the floor.

"I'm sorry," Scott said, looking at the angry White Queen. "I was trying to find Alex."

"Well, I'm not Alex," she said curtly. She looked at her broken six inch white heel. Now she would have to walk barefoot back to her room. Bare feet would do nothing to enhance her angry walk.

Scott offered his hand. "I'm sorry about your shoe. It's my fault I ran into. I'll pay to buy you a new pair."

"It's a Manola Blahnik; it's a seven hundred dollar shoe," Emma replied. "I doubt your teacher's salary could afford it."

Scott only smiled as she took his hand. "What about an installment plan?"

X****************XMEN********************X

"Bobby," Rogue said as he held her.

"What?"

"You are really cold."

"That's rather harsh."

"No, I mean you are cold."

"Oh," Bobby let her go. For the moment, he had forgotten he was all ice. "Sorry."

Rogue turned back to the sandwiches, while Bobby lingered around the kitchen. "What did they serve in the cafeteria."

"It was left over day, since some of the students go home for the weekend."

"Anything good?"

"Not really. It was kind of pick whatever."

Rogue slathered the toast with mayonnaise. "I was just wondering about fruit or chips or something."

"I think there is fruit. I'll go get some if you'd like," Bobby offered. "Anything in particular."

"Maybe an apple or banana."

"Got it."

When Bobby left the kitchen, it was just Rogue and her thoughts. She pulled off her gloves to put ham, turkey, and cheese on the sandwiches. It was always gloves on or gloves off. Her gloves dictated how she lived her life.

"I told you it had to be Rogue," Lorna said as she and Alex walked in the kitchen. "She can't cook."

Rogue looked up at her. There were times when wanted to do nothing but suck the life out of person, but she reminded herself that she had teammates. "Hi Lorna."

"What are you making?"

"We could smell the toast from the library."

"I'm making sandwiches for me and Remy," Rogue replied.

Lorna leaned over the counter to see her concoctions. "So your boyfriend, who can make Iron Chef competition worthy food, wakes up and you're making him a sandwich."

Rogue stared at her. "It's leftover day. My options were limited."

Lorna rolled her eyes. "Whatever. At least if you get married, one of you can cook."

"How is he?" Alex asked changing the subject.

"He's okay. He's dehydrated; Hank isn't going to discharge him until he eats and gets more fluids," Rogue pulled out a knife and cut the two sandwiches in half.

Bobby slid in the room, leaving an icy trail behind him. "No apples, but I found bananas."

"Thanks," Rogue replied.

"I thought you were watching the movie, Drake," Lorna said. "You vote for Frozen to torture the rest of us?"

"No," Bobby smiled. "That's what T.J. and Clarice wanted to watch, while Kurt and Ororo took care of a few things."

"T.J." Rogue searched thought the pantry for a tray and paper plates. "I thought her mom was supposed to pick her up."

"She called Kurt," Alex said. "Something about her being too sick to take T.J. for the weekend."

"That's like the third time Wanda's done that," Rogue said, emerging from the pantry. "Lorna, what have you heard from her?"

"Oh please. Just because Wanda is my half-sister, doesn't mean she talks to me," Lorna rolled her eyes. "Pietro's more likely to acknowledge me than Wanda."

"Scott said Wanda used to be a part of the brotherhood of mutants. Magneto waged a war against humanity," Alex added. "But Xavier defeated him."

"Can you imagine if Magneto won," Bobby laughed. "No offence, Lorna."

Lorna didn't respond to his comment.

Rogue looked over the tray of food. Two sandwiches. Three bananas. Four bottles of water. It wasn't a gourmet meal, but it would have to do. "I liked to stay and chat about Wanda, but I have Remy to tend to."

X****************XMEN********************X

"What did my Poppa want?" Remy asked. He hadn't talked to his father in over three months.

"He wants you to call him; he's been worried."

"And…"

"He said it has been tense in New Orleans since you sent BellaDonna divorce papers," Ororo raised an eyebrow to him. "Why didn't you tell me you filed for divorce?"

"The timing didn't seem right," Remy answered.

Ororo studied his facial features. His poker face wasn't one she could read.

"It was something I'd dought 'bout fa ah while now," Remy omitted. "I just didn't want to talk to anyone 'bout it."

"Why not?" Ororo asked. "We would have been supportive."

"It's not just that Stormy. It's embarrassing," Remy explained. "I hear the talk. This school can be a soap opera."

"I know." Ororo knew too well. Sometimes the rumors spread through the halls like wildfires. It was hard to quench them. "When did you file for divorce?"

"'Bout a week after ya weddin'. Didn't tell ya cuz I didn't want ya ta lose faith in marriage," Remy noticed the sadness wash over her face.

'Remy…"

"It be de hardest decision I had ta make."

"Remy, I'm going to ask you a question, and I want you to answer me honestly," Ororo placed her hand on his. "Did you love BellaDonna?"

"Oui…Non…At the time I did. Over and over, I tried ta justify why we should be together. Even on our wedding day, I had to convince myself it was…meant ta be. She was so happy; I didn't wanta take dat from her." Remy stared at the ceiling to avoid her gaze. "When I heard she was de one he negotiated my exile from N'awlins, I hated her…and I knew if I took her with me, she'd hate me from takin' her from her family and position de Assassins Guild. So I left her…I couldn't even hug her…I just left…Dere were a few times I dought 'bout goin' back for her, but…" He shook his head. "She'd make my decisions fa me, just like Poppa did."

Ororo couldn't hide her tears. Her voice gave her away. "I…I'm sorry, Remy."

"Durin' Bel's surprise visit, when she interrupted Rogue and I's date, she thought it was just some fling," Remy explained. "She was pissed when I sent her de divorce papers. She had a few choice words to call Rogue. When I told she dat Rogue wasn't de other woman, she was de only woman, dat sent Bel over de edge. Since den, it's been near impossible to have a civil conversation wit her—when I can get a hold of her. Called her father once 'bout it and even Tante Mattie, but nothing…"

"Does Rogue know?"

"Non, I ain't told her. It be my business. Didn't want to drag her into it," Remy replied. "Besides, she gets upset every time Bel calls."

"I think she's be more understanding if you let her in."

Remy shrugged his shoulders.

"Another question."

"Well since I'm trapped here, go ahead."

"What are your feelings for Rogue?"

Remy's head spun.

X****************XMEN********************X

Logan adjusted his jaw. He could taste the blood on his lip, but it healed as instant as Kurt's fist made contact. He stood up straight, tilted and cracked his neck. "You feel better."

"Ja und nein," Kurt shook out his fist. He did feel better after punching his friend, but his fist hurt. He forgot that punching Logan wasn't like punching anyone else.

"Kurt."

"Vhy didn't you tell me?" Kurt asked stretching out his hand.

Logan shook his head. "I've tried…I just…Kurt…you don't know what this is like for me. I wanted to remember things for so long, and there is nothing…then something I see or hear triggers an overflow. Some things I wish I could forget."

"Es tut mir leid," Kurt replied.

"So am I," Logan answered. "Where's T.J.?"

"Jubilee is watching her and Clarice."

"I owe you a beer."

X****************XMEN********************X

Remy's head spun.

Ororo smiled and glanced over her shoulder Then, she looked back down at the bouquet. She tossed white roses tied with a light blue ribbon over her shoulder.

Rogue jumped up in the air, looking weightless for a brief moment. Then, the bouquet landed in her hand.

Remy eyed up her with the bouquet and smirked. She would look so lovely walking down the aisle, wouldn't she? Then, he backed up away from the others.

"Nice catch." Kurt said patting her on the shoulder and walking over to Ororo. "Hallo Ororo. It's time for the garter."

He heard the commotion in the room as Kurt slid off Ororo's garter and tossed it in the air.

Remy flew across the room using his bo staff to catapult him in the air. He grabbed the garter and hit a table flipping over it and onto the ground. "It mine hommes." He glared with red eyes as he stood up.

"You know what that means Cajun." Logan said to him as he walked by all cocky. "You're the next one to get married."

Remy smirked. "Oui. Oui." He said and walked over to Rogue. Then, he took her hand and lifted it to his lips. "May I have this dance."

"Yes." Rogue said and he escorted her to the dance floor. Her green eyes stared into his as she wrapped her arms around his neck. "Nice catch."

"Ya did good yarself." Remy smirked, kissing her ruby lips.

They both felt the tiny tug.

"What's wrong Chere?" Remy asked, seeing her face frown.

"Nothing." Rogue replied and laid her head on his chest, feeling his heart pound.

Remy kissed her hair. He could feel all her emotions in his head. She feared hurting him. He knew it was coming. Even he noticed the white streaks in his hair growing out. Her powers were going to come back. He held her tighter in his arms. It didn't change the way he felt though.

"Remy…Remy…Remy…"

Remy looked her in the eyes. "She stole my heart."

Ororo smiled. "I figured as much."

Remy took a deep breath. He admitted his feelings about Rogue to Ororo but hadn't omitted them to Rogue. He was surprised he left his guard down enough to confess anything to anyone. "Don't tell nobody what I say."

"I won't," Ororo stood up. "It looks like you have a lot to do the next few days."

Remy nodded. Talk to Rogue. Call my father. Meet with Professor.

"And Remy."

"Brush your teeth. Your breath…It's a wonder I talked to you as long as I did."

"Thanks, Stormy," Remy rolled his eyes, but he could feel the funk in his mouth.

X****************XMEN********************X

"The Rehabilitation idea was a joke." Emma held her heels in one hand and ran her fingers through her hair with the other. "I just don't understand why your professor doesn't trust me. Sabretooth is a criminal. We acquired no new information from him, but your professor does nothing but hope things will work out.

"Doesn't your professor understand the severity of the issue?" Emma added. "Sabretooth has been in custody for a week, yet I…we know nothing."

Scott shrugged. She had a decent argument, but still didn't seem to understand. "You want us to trust you."

"Yes, exactly," Emma held her nose in the air. "It's not that hard."

"No offense, Emma, but we really don't know you," Scott replied. "You want us to trust you, but you haven't given us any reason to."

"I work for the government," Emma explained. "Shouldn't that be trust enough?"

"No."

Emma remained silent. She tapped briefly into his head, and she understood what he meant.

"Give us a reason to trust you."

X****************XMEN********************X

Logan sipped on his third beer, while Kurt was finishing up his third as well. The wind blew gently as they sat together on the mansion roof. He could feel Kurt's glowing eyes demanding for an explanation. The silence bothered him more than the conversation he'd dreaded. "What do you want to know, Elf?"

Kurt lowered his beer. "Vhen?"

"I'd say 20 years ago," Logan took another sip. "I think. I think she just split from Creed."

"Zid you know vhat you vere doing?" Kurt asked. He peeled the label to the empty bottle.

"Yes," Logan nodded. "I did."

Kurt rolled the label in a little ball, playing with it in his fingers. "I zorta knew…or guezzed."

"What do you mean?"

Kurt stood up, gazing in the distance. "It made zenze. You knew Sabretooth, zo you knew Mystique. She'z older, like you and Sabretooth. You two knew each other." Kurt tossed the little ball of paper, letting the wind catch it. "I hate math."

"So do I."

Kurt faced him. "Logan, du bist mein bester Freund. I vish you vould have admitted it to me, instead of me hearing it from him."

„I had a hard time admitting it to myself."

Kurt nodded. Whether he understood or was buzzed from three beers, Logan wasn't sure. „I need to get. Ororo is problably looking for me, and I need to get T.J. and Clarice to bed."

„I'm sorry, Elf."

BAMF

„I'm sorry."

Rogue walked in the med-lab with the tray of food. Remy wasn't in the bed. "Remy," she called out, stepping inside the room. She knew Remy wasn't a fan of hospitals or labs, but his disappearance puzzled her. Did he not want to see her? Did he sneak out without Hank noticing?

She put the tray down on a rolling table, signing in confusion. The sheets to the bed were a mess, and the I.V. drip was missing.

"Rogue."

She turned at the sound of her voice. He stood at the entrance to the room. He leaned on the doorframe. He would be even sexier without the I.V. bag hanging on the rack next to him, but the paper thin gown she didn't mind.

"I brought something to eat," she said. She was nervous to speak to him, but she didn't know why. Even after six months of dating, he still made her weak at the knees.

He walked over to her with the I.V. rack rolling along side. He looked at the tray and around the room. He smirked as he turned his attention to her. "You take me to the most exciting places on our dates."

She smiled at his joke as he sat on the end of the bed. "Are you feeling better?"

"Non."

She sat next to him, rolling the table in front of them. He didn't seem to care about the sandwiches at the moment; he just stared at her.

"Maybe now."

"Alex, you don't have to walk me to my room," Lorna said, as he walked beside her in the hallway. "It's the 21st century."

"I know…I just," Alex wasn't sure what to say. "You seemed upset about Bobby's comment."

"I'm not. I know my father doesn't take the right paths," Lorna shrugged. "Or that's how Professor Xavier explained it. I just think Magneto wanted to do the best for us…me, Wanda, Pietro…mutants…I don't think he really knew how."

"I know what you mean. Scott's my brother, but sometimes he thinks about his goals rather than mine. It's not that he's wrong, but he's so focused on the big picture that he forgets about the small things."

Lorna nodded. Alex's assessment made sense to her, but she couldn't help but wonder about her family. "This is me," she said as they paused in front of her room.

"Yeah, it is," Alex shoved his hands in his pockets.

Lorna didn't want to talk anymore about her troubles. Instead, she made the first move. "So how long do I have to stand here before you ask me out?"

"Maybe a little longer."

"You want to come inside."

There was a silence between them as they ate. Rogue knew the wheels in his head were turning, but they weren't opening his mouth to speak. Instead, he ate his sandwich, the half of hers that she couldn't eat, and all three bananas. He took a sip of water.

She turned away from him as the tears built in her eyes. She thought she had cried everything out by now, but the tears didn't want to be over. A single tear rolled down her cheek as she muttered, "Ah'm sorry."

He reached over, using the white streak in her hair to separate his bare fingers from touching her cheek. "I da one dat need t'apologize," he said, turning her head to face him.

She stared at his ruby orbs. They weren't as bright as usual, but they focused on her, searching for her forgiveness. But she knew she didn't deserve it. "Ah shouldn't have spoke to him. Ah shoulda trusted you."

Remy turned away, staring at the door for an escape. "I shoulda told ya 'bout Paris when y'asked."

"Ah shouldn't have pushed you."

" I shoulda bin honest wit ya." Remy lifted up his gown, revealing claw mark like scars. "Y'asked me one time where dun got de scars."

Rogue traced the scars on the left side of his body. They were barely visible unless you studied them—something she did when her powers were in control. She had asked him about the scars a few times, but the answer was always the same. "Ya were attached by an animal."

"Oui, dose claw marks came from dat anima locked in a cell down de hallway."

She suddenly understood why he was afraid to talk about Paris or scars on his skin. Sabretooth was more than the monster in his dreams.

"I didn't tell ya'bout Paris cuz I's 'fraid, Chere. 'Fraida losin' ya."

She could see the tears swelling in his eyes, but he would hold them back to keep her from seeing him cry. Instead, she cried for them both. "Y'ain't gonna lose mah."

"Promettez-vous, mon river rat?"

"I promise, swamp rat."

He carefully wrapped his arms around her and kissed the top of her head as she buried her head in his chest. She could feel his heart pounding in a steady rhythm. She didn't want to let him go. She didn't want to lose him.

Wanda sat in her bed, her covers up to her waist. Red. Everything around her was red. She loved the color.

She looked up at him. Vision stood proud and calm. His face was always expressionless, but when she was with him, he was more of a man than an android. "You can't be here. You shouldn't be here. You're dead."

"You seem to be confused by the reality of the situation."

"No, you're dead. I saw you die. Like the others…you died," Wanda explained. Her head hurt. Nothing seemed to make sense.

"I assure you," Vision lifted her chin to face him. "I'm not dead."

She shook her head. The tears rolled down her checks. He was dead. She was sure of it. She was the one who killed him.

But then again, his touch felt so real. He traced her tears away with his fingers. She missed his touch.

"You need sleep, Wanda," he said.

Her eyes grew heavy. "I need sleep."

"A good night sleep."

"A good night."

"Sleep, my dear."

Wanda lay back on her pillow. She stared up at him. "Sleep," she mumbled as her eyes closed.

"And all will be well in the morning…."
