Each time they meet at the airport, him only convincing her to come when he sounds exceptionally pathetic, they know it is doing more harm than good. They're taking one step forward, two more steps back in their relationship. (On one hand, at least she is willing to see him. On the other, their meetings always end badly.)
She is usually reduced to tears, he only becomes more disgusted with himself.
