CHAPTER 10

Promise me coffee & a kiss -Part 1-
NOT NECESSARILY IN THAT ORDER -Part 2-

IT was a good night... no wind, the temperature was quite pleasant, considering the season of the year.. there was no clouds on the sky and the stars were shinning over their heads.

Two figures were sitting on the grass of the park, their laughs and words were heard clearly in the distance.

The park was far enough of the center to be quiet but they still could hear the noises of the city at night.. the sound of the traffic, the distant buzz of the crowd, the bugs and the leaves falling off the trees.. those little sounds that never really go away in a big city.

"I used to come here when I was a child." Gail revealed, looking in the distance. "When I needed to clear my mind I just came here and watched the city and the stars.. and somehow all my worries disappeared for a moment."

"The view is amazing.. I didn't know this place." Holly who had been staring at the sky for the last minutes looked down, searching for those blue eyes in the dark. "I know I should have told you this before.." Her voice faltered a little, she wasn't sure how to go on. "But i'm sorry for spying on you.. you know, in the therapy session."

Gail tuned her face to her and held her glare without even blink. She was so focused on her that for one second she forgot what she has just said.

'She looks ridiculously beautiful when she's worried' Was all she can managed to think before the doc's words came back to her.
She cleared her throat and tried to focus. "It wasn't your fault.. you just called me in the wrong moment.. Bad timing, that's all." She left her mouth opened, then shook her head a couple of times like if she wanted to get rid of one thought, like if she wanted to say something else... but decided not to.

The brunette noticed her hesitation, grabbed her hand and put her between hers. "You know you can tell me everything, right? I won't judge."

Gail nodded, looking at their hands. If she wanted to say something it was the time.. "I picked up the phone on purpose." She admitted in a whisper.. "I don't exactly know why I did it.. it just happened that way."

The brunette took a moment to try to understand the meaning of what she had said.. She was surprised by the confession, in fact Holly was expecting her to be a little upset for the whole thing.. "I have to say I didn't see that one coming.." She said and started drawing patterns with her index on the blonde's forearm.. It was relaxing, at least for her.. Gail's instead, had goosebumps, maybe due to her touch or the conversation, she didn't know for sure.

Gail shivered, but didn't stop the brunette's hand. "I know.. I think I wanted to tell you how I felt about the whole therapy thing and my job, but I didn't know how to bring that up.. and then I saw your name on the screen and.. and I though, why not?

Gail showed bitter smile and the brunette gave a little squeeze in her hand. In occasions like this one, Holly could clearly see the Gail who was socially awkward and shy, so adorable but also so fragile.

She realized It was the time for a reassuring comment. "Thank you for wanting to share that with me.. but if you ever have something to say, just say it.. you don't have to pretend, just spit it out and get it out of your head.. from experience i know you know how to speak your mind, Gail."

Gail couldn't avoid connecting her teasing mode.. It was like her standard programming, the switch was always ready to be flipped. "The tricky part of that theory is to find the way to shut you up to be able to speak freely." Her bitter smile morphed into a genuine one and Holly laughed. "I love your mindless ramblings, but sometimes they get in the way." She bit her lip at the second she finished the phrase.

"Seriously.. one day, that big mouth of yours is gonna get you in trouble." The doctor assured her, looking at her lips.

"I'll take my chances... and speaking of troubles, I almost didn't make it tonight" Suddenly she blurted out.

Holly had an interrogation expression on her face, encouraging her to continue.

"I think i freaked out a little bit about tonight when i was at home this afternoon" She recognized and started telling her what had happened a few hours before.

3 HOURS BEFORE, IN GAIL'S APARTMENT

She was stopped in front of her closet, amounts of clothes scattered along the room.. on the bed, all over the floor.. her bedroom was such a mess in that moment, but she couldn't think about it right now...

Usually the blonde didn't put much attention on the what-am-I-going-to-wear-today topic... She was used to pick the first thing from the closet and put it on, no overthinking about it. But something was different tonight.. she actually cared about what Holly might think of her and she wanted to look good. NO! Correction.. she wanted to look stunning.

"Fuck.. I should have asked her what i have to wear tonight.." She cursed as she picked one of her favorite pair of jeans.. she looked at them, trying to get some magical answer from the fabric.

"Too informal.." She finally decided, tossing them over her shoulder with the rest of discarded clothing, a beige turtleneck sweater ended up in her hands after that.. "I'm a lot of things.. but definitely i'm not a nun.." Knock on wood she muttered as she touched the door of the closet which in fact was wooden.. She automatically felt stupid..

In matter of seconds, the sweater flew through the air to land over her favorite jeans, on the floor.. Then she literally got in the closet to continue her search. "Too elegant, too casual, too much cleavage.. whouu I had forgotten about this shirt.. too old.." Then she sat on the floor defeated.. rested her elbows on her thighs, cupped her chin with both hands and closed her eyes as she let out a loud moan of frustration.

Someone knocked at the door. "Gail? You still alive?" A woman's voice came through the closed door.

"Not for too long.." She complained, staring blankly at all the pieces of clothing. "I have a serious case of color blocking going on, i'll probably collapse in a few minutes"

Tracy Nash opened the door slightly and came into the room. When she turned around and saw that the hell had broken loose in the room, she let out a whisper. "Geez, no wonder why Dov called.."

Gail pouted, narrowing her eyes... She tilted her head to look directly at her friend. "Have you come to gloat over me? Because if that's the case, i'll throw you all my collection of heels.. they're not many but if they hurt in the head as much as they hurt on my feet.. it's a good threat." She warned, trying to put a bully face.

"Believe it or not, i'm here to help.." Tracy exclaimed, putting her hands in the air, then she removed some of the clothes from the bed and took a seat, looking around. "I thought you may use some advices."

"Advices?" She repeated.. What I do need is a fucking miracle.. but she didn't say it out loud.. considering that Tracy was trying to help.

"Where are you guys gonna go?" Tracy ended up asking.

Still on the floor, Gail shrugged and shook her head at the same time. At least she still conserved some coordination skills..maybe some day could use them for something productive. "I dunno."

Tracy frowned and tried again. "What are you going to do?"

"No clue.." She responded, staring at the ground under her feet.

"Okay, don't worry." She bent down to pat her shoulder. "Has Holly given you any indications about what to wear?"

Holly's name sent a chill through her spine but she managed to ignore it. "You think i would be sitting her, if she did? NOO! She has said nothing about it.. and I just texted her.. and her brilliant response was literally 'Whatever you wear will be fine..'" She said, imitating her voice. "If I survive tonight.. i'm gonna kill her." She added.

"Watch out what you're saying.. I would hate have to use your own words against you when I put you under arrest." Tracy joked with a smile, trying to release some of the tension. "Okay.. then I guess we'll have to improvise."

Gail rose from the floor and got closer to her, trying to be intimidating. "But if I listen something similar to a laugh.." She began to mutter.

".. I will probably regret it." The dark-haired woman finished her sentence as she stood to match her height.

Gail's lips curved into a smile, a genuine one. "Nice to know you start know me."

"I really don't have other choice, do I?" Tracy snapped, then handed over to her a bunch of clothes. "Let's start with these."

After half and hour and several failed attempts of keeping the burst of laugh under control, Tracy finally found the perfect outfit. The platinum blonde came out of the bathroom wearing beige leggings and a dark blue tank top that showed some cleavage, but not too much. Plus the color stood out her light blue eyes.. And over that, a black blazer Tracy had borrowed her..

She was wearing makeup, enough not to look too pale, (her usual skin color). She also had applied some blusher on her cheeks and mascara on her eyelashes. Tracy tried to convince her to use lipstick but the blonde shook her head. Her lips wasn't gonna be intense red for once.

The blonde stopped at the foot of the bed, standing awkwardly in front of her friend, waiting for the final approval.
She wanted to look formal and elegant, but no overdressed.. provocative but not vulgar.. and obviously hot.. Nailed it. Were the words that appeared in her mind.

Nash kept silence for a moment, then she showed a proud smile. "You're strikingly beautiful, Gail.. If I were into girls, I would hit on you right now." She admitted laughing, knowing that the comment would Gail feel uncomfortable. "What about the shoes?" She said picking up a pair of high heels.

"There's no way i'm wearing those." She quickly said, her voice a bit more acute than usual. "You've seen how I walk on those things, I'm like a clown walking on coals.. they are just not made for me." Nash knew she had a point and didn't complained when Gail put a pair of dark high boots on. Then the blonde walked to one of the drawers and started choosing the rings she was gonna put on her fingers.

They knew each other pretty well, but if there was something Tracy had known for sure about Gail from the beginning was that she blindly thought that you could never wear too many rings on your hands.. It didn't exist such a thing.

Then Gail's phone rang, and Tracy picked it up before the blonde could grab it..

HOLLY'S laugh sounded clearly in the silence of the park when the blonde stopped talking. "Well, I have already told you tonight.. but Tracy is right.. you're strikingly beautiful and unlike her.. I do have a soft spot for braves, socially awkward and incredibly beautiful women." A brilliant smile crept into her lips and spread over her face.

The platinum blonde looked down, playing with her hair nervously. "Well Miss-Nerd-Universe.. you're one of the most attractive women I have laid my eyes on." Thank god her voice didn't break when she said it.. Mentally Gail did the victory dance, feeling proud of herself.

Holly's smile shaded into a crooked one and then put one of her faces.. So Gail just waited for it. "I think the waiter of the restaurant agrees with you in that matter." She quipped, and curved her lips into a naughty grin.

The brunette was right. "His voice was annoying.. well, he, the whole packet was annoying. At least he has good taste, I give him that." Gail added, with a sarcastic grin. "I really need to learn how to use the camera of my phone.. I should have taken a picture of his face."

"Poor boy.." The pathologist agreed with her, then her eyes started shinning with excitement. "Give me your phone."

The blonde grabbed it and handed over to her, she started regretting it when Holly activated the camera app and pointed directly at her face.

Gail opened her mouth to complain just when Holly took the first picture, blinding her with the flash in the process. The brunette laughed, pointed again and took another picture.. and other after that one.

Gail didn't think about it.. She just pounced on her to make her stop.

AN HOUR AND A HALF BEFORE

Holly parked her car in front of the blonde's apartment, there was no one on the streets but a young couple who were walking a dog. She grabbed her purse, and took her phone, dialing the number six. The speed dial number assigned to Gail..

Someone who was clearly not the blonde picked it up. "Hi, it's Holly.. It's Gail around?" The brunette greeted.

"Holly, it's Tracy.. Yeah, she's almost ready.. Do you wanna talk to her?" She offered, friendly.

Holly hesitated for a second before answering. "No need, can you just tell that her ride has arrived?"

"Sure thing, give her two minutes."

"Thanks Tracy" Then she hung up and made herself comfortable in the seat, waiting for the blonde.

She was wearing tight black pants and a white blouse with black elbow patches and dark buttons, her coat was folded in the backseat.

She was so absorbed in her thoughts than she didn't noticed when the front door was opened.. She didn't return to reality until Gail knocked on the car window repeatedly, with a smirk crawling in her lips.

"Hi officer!" The brunette smiled back as she rolled down the window. "Get in."

She surrounded the car to open the passenger door and climb in. "Where are we heading?" The blonde asked as she put on the safe belt, but there was no answer... She turned her head to find brown eyes looking at her. "You're staring.. y'know?"

Against all expectations, the doctor didn't look away but spoke in a soft and low voice. "I don't stare.. I just observe with scientific reasons." She said with a hint of a smile on her lips. "But you couldn't blame me if I was." Then she turned on the engine and looked at the road as she pulled away from the apartment.

"Scientific reason ahh?" Gail repeated, rolling her eyes.. then she fixed her gaze on her, not bothering to be subtle.

Holly pushed her glasses up her nose and blew loose strands of hair from her eyes, hoping that clearer vision would help her to focus more on the road and less on her passenger.. But she wasn't perfect, so her tactic failed miserably. "Now you're the one staring.."

"No, I'm not.." The blonde replied with sarcasm on her voice. "I'm just checking your driving and concentration skills." She revealed, trying to remain serious..

Holly tilted her head for a second to look at her. "I passed?"

Gail shook her head. "You have just failed... So, where are we going? Assuming you can keep your eyes on the road long enough to take us to wherever we're heading. "

Holly stepped on the gas to pass a car. "I thought about taking you to a fancy restaurant." She started saying and Gail grimaced. "But.. I realized it's not your style, mine neither.. so I decided to go to a place a bit more personal where there is plenty of comfort food, the kind you like if i'm right."

A bit impressed for her deduction, Gail asked. "Did you specialize in mind-reading in college?"

"Nop.. just body language! I get used to yours." Gail wasn't looking at her, but judging by her tone, she knew the brunette was smiling.

A few minutes later, Holly parked the car and winked an eye. "We've arrived."

They climbed out of the car and headed to a Italian restaurant at the end of the street. The pizzeria wasn't big but almost all the tables were already occupied. The floor was covered with teak paneling, and the walls were painted with a light yellow color which gave the place a feeling of warmth. There were also white and black pictures hanged on the walls.. The smell of spices and pizzas that came out from the kitchen was simply exquisite.

When one of the waiters came to them to greet them, Gail was still examining the place.

"Good night ladies" He said with a flirting voice. "I hope you have a reservation." He said, staring at them with curiosity.

He was in her late twenties, maybe early thirties.. He seemed determined and self-confident, one of those people who rarely take a no for an answer. Gail automatically decided that she didn't like his attitude.

"No, we don't have reservation, but it's Liz around?" Holly asked, taking a step forward.

"No, she's not here yet.. but wait, you're Holly right? Holly Stewart?" He connected the dots and Holly gave him a nod. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Elizabeth told me you would come... please follow me." He leaded the way to a table next to one of the large windows, then he gave them the menus and left, not before showing them a bright smile.

Holly sat in front of the blonde and started reading her menu, she could literally felt Gail's gaze fixed on her. "Is there something you want to say?" She asked, pulling her glasses up on her head.

Gail only held her glare and then said. "It's a pleasure to meet you Holly Stewart.. I'm so delighted that I would kiss the ground you walk on." She mocked, with a cheesy voice. "You know he's flirting with you, right?"

"Let it go Gail.. do not give it importance." Holly easily replied with a grin. "Besides, he's not my type.."

"Guess you have a point.. but I don't think he knows that." The police officer opened her menu and started reading as well. "By the way who is Elizabeth?" She didn't look at Holly when she asked, pretending she didn't actually care about the answer. 'She called her Liz.. Maybe they're close.' Gail bit her lip in frustration at the thought.

"She's an old friend, we met in college.. well, in fact we were roommates for two years." The brunette explained and poured some water in the glasses.

"So, if I have understood correctly, she studied medicine and now she runs a restaurant?" Gail mentioned in disbelief.

The doc tilted her head, lines appeared in her forehead before answering. "She didn't end the career, quitted in the second year.. it wasn't for her... then she requested a loan and bought this place.." Then a proud grin popped up on her face "She doesn't work in a restaurant... she's the owner of one."

"Okay.. now i'm impressed." The blonde admitted. "I like this place, and I haven't tried the food yet, but if it tastes as well as it smells.." She licked her upper lip with her tongue.. there was no need to finish the sentence.

Holly was about to answer when the waiter came back. "Are you ladies ready to order the food?" He looked at Holly, a few seconds more than it was necessary then turned to Gail. "Should we start with the drinks?"

"I'll have whatever she's having." Was Holly's statement, directly looking at her. She knew that the blonde was more the beer kind of girl, so she was teasing her.

"Being too polite is gonna get you in trouble one day, nerd.." Gail replied, taking a look at the wine menu. "Do you rather red or white?"

"Red is fine." She closed her menu and handed it over to him, her eyes still fixed on the police officer.

Gail didn't know if Holly was ignoring him on purpose or not but she liked it. "We'll take the Pinot Noir bottle then." She finally added.

Then Holly broke the visual contact for a moment to order the food.. She didn't talk until the waiter went back to the kitchen. "I didn't know you were a wine lover." Gail heard a hint of surprise on her voice.

"I'm not.." She slowly put her hand on the table, and started playing with one of her rings. "But apparently I can type 'wine basics' on google as good as everybody else."

"I see.." The brunette whispered, putting her hand over the table, next to Gail's. "That's really sweet of you."

The blonde couldn't help herself and said sardonically. "I'm irresistible, I know.."

Holly's gaze intensified. "I hadn't planned saying it in that way but.." The waiter interrupted her when he came with the wine.

Gail thought with frustration.."And the bad timing award goes to... (drum roll) this inopportune waiter!" Automatically Holly started laughing, she put her hand over her mouth trying to suppress the sound...

Gail looked down to hide her flushed cheeks.. apparently she hadn't kept the comment on her mind like she thought.

He didn't hear her.. maybe because he was too busy fighting against the cork. He seemed to be moving in slow motion.. "Do you need help with that?" Holly said, when she was more calm.. Even right then, she still had her manners.

"Thank you.. I think i'm gonna break the bottle." He handed it over to her with the corkscrew, feeling a little embarrassed.

Gail watched how the brunette opened the bottle skillfully with a quick and efficient movement then she poured some wine into the glasses. "You're good at this." He said, clearly flirting again.

"Not big deal.. I just like wine." She politely shrugged off the compliment. After that he went to attend other of the tables. "Where were we?" She took her glass, enjoying the aroma and color, before testing the reddish liquid.

They waited for the food, talking, drinking wine, and making question to each other.

"Can I ask you a personal question?" Gail said after a while, with her glass on her hand. The brunette repositioned her glasses and straightened herself before nodding.

"When did you.. you know.. come out?" The blonde muttered, then took a long sip of her glass..

"It wasn't easy.. I think it never is." Holly stared at her, thinking.. Eventually the words started coming out of her mouth. "I was in college... Everything was great at first.. I was studying what I wanted, I had friends and a lovely boyfriend.." Gail opened her eyes with surprise but she didn't cut her off. "Then things got complicated.. I met a girl, a really cool chick.. beautiful and open-minded. We started talking about relations and ended up talking about Matt (my boyfriend at the time) and me.. She made me realize that I loved him, but I wasn't in love with him.. and that fact brought questions.. many question that I didn't know if I wanted to answer." She looked at the table distractedly.. "She was the one who suggested that I might be gay.. It was a very confusing stage but she stayed with me and helped me at each step.. That's how I found out.."

Gail didn't say anything at first.. she just stared at her with admiration in her eyes until she realized she actually had to open her mouth to say something, anything.. Holly was waiting for her answer. "I think you handled it very well.. Jeez, you told me you were a lesbian the first day we met."

The brunette laughed. "You're right.. but it has been a long process to get where i am right now.. I guess i just lost my fear at some point and realized that I didn't have to hide from myself.."

"That's profound.." Gail said gently.. then she noticed that in some point of the conversation the food had arrived, the pizza prosciutto and the caprese salad were on the table. "I mean you pulled through it.. that's.. you were brave, you still are now."

"Don't read too much into it.. It's just an old story in which I ended up doing what I had to do." She put a slice on her plate and started eating.

"You don't like compliment, do you?" The blonde asked at her reaction, she took a slice and brought it to her mouth.

Holly managed a wry smile because she didn't want to sound too serious. "It's just than i'm more used to be the one who make them."

"Then I hope you get used to it soon enough.. because i'm not going to apologize every time I say something you are not used to hear." Her own words surprised her and Gail looked at her food, trying to pull herself together. That has been soooo corny.. She made a mental note to remember that the things she thought had to pass through filters before leaving her throat.

They finished the food and asked for the bill and the waiter (renamed as F***ing stalker by Gail) came to the table.. "Hope you enjoyed the dinner." He took the money and started walking away, but unfortunately for them, he stopped and came back. "Would you consider give me you phone number?" He asked with puppy eyes, looking at Holly.

"What for?" She replied sharply.

"Dunno, grab a coffee or something one day." He showed a brilliant smile, awaiting a yes.

"Look.. I'm gonna make this easy for you.." She grabbed her jacket and stood up. "You and I both play for the same team."

"Ohh.." He muttered, then surprisingly turned her face to Gail, attacking again. "What about you blondie?"

Gail furrowed her forehead with indignation.. "Are you serious?" The situation was completely surreal.. "Damn, are you fucking blind or you just don't catch the hints? She's a lesbian, we had dinner together, and we're not family.. Doesn't that tell you anything?" Gail rose and started walking to the door. "And before you ask.. no, there's no tip for you tonight."

THEY exited the restaurant, just when a blue SUV was parking in front of the door. A tall woman got out of the car and looked at them. "Hey bookworm!" She said at their direction and Holly turned her head, recognizing the voice. "Elizabeth Pierce?! The terror of the kitchen." She joked, walking to her to pull her into a tight hug.

When they pulled away the doctor motioned for Gail to come closer. "Liz this is my friend Gail." She introduced them and started talking. Elizabeth was a handsome woman, very attractive.. big grey eyes, soft features and a captivating smile.

"So did you guys like the food?" She asked with genuine interest, taking a few things from the truck of her car.

"It was as good as I remembered it." Holly gave her a friendly pat in the shoulder and the blonde added. "Everything was delicious, although we had a situation with one of the waiters."

"Let me guess.." She gave Gail a knowing look. "Tall, puppy eyes and insistent, right?" They both nodded with a grin. "Yeah.. Nick definitely has a thing for beautiful women, he can't just turn it off." She said laughing. "Holly, i'm so sorry but I have to get going.. but please call me some day. We seriously need to catch up."She said, glancing at the police officer.

"Count on it, Liz." Holly answered and gave her a kiss on the cheek. "See you soon."

Then Elizabeth turned to the blonde with her eyebrow arched. "It has been nice to meet you, Gail.. I hope to see you again." She offered a smile and got into the restaurant.

"So.. that was Elizabeth?" The platinum blonde muttered as they walked to the car. It was more an affirmation than a question.

Holly nodded and distractedly took her hand, entwining her fingers with hers... For a second, Gail was assaulted by the idea that maybe Elizabeth could be the cool chick that Holly met in college. She decided she would have to ask her about it... at some point. "You wanna go home?" She asked and Holly turned to her.

"No, no yet." Then the doctor thought that maybe Gail wanted to leave and started rambling. "No, I don't.. Why? Because if you want, we could call it a night.. and..i don't know, maybe go out another day.. or-"

The blonde put her index on her lips to make her stop and whispered. "Get in the car bookworm, I wanna show you something."

GAIL had grabbed the brunette's wrist with her hands and had immobilized her against the grass. She pinned her arms up in either side of her head, reassuring her position.

"I was just taking a few pictures.." Holly complained, with a pout. "This is police brutality!"

Gail leaned in closer to her and whispered in her ear. "You might be complaining, but you're not doing anything to make me stop."

"You're right.. because I can do this.." Holly made a fast move, and suddenly she was the one on top, and the blonde was lying underneath her.

"Okay.. this is what happens when I mess with an athletic freak.." Gail let out a sigh.. "In the battle between the snarky police officer, and the ridiculously well toned bookworm.. the nerd is clearly the winner.. Ironic, right?"

"I just caught you by surprise, that's it.." She shrugged with a grin.

"Yes.. you did." Gail bit her lip, trying to suppress the question that was threatening with leaving her mouth.

"What is it?" The gesture obviously didn't go unnoticed for Holly.. not at that distance. The blonde could literally felt her breath on her cheeks and lips.

She hesitated and tried to move but Holly tightened her body against hers.. "Okay..okay. The cool chick that you met in college.."

"Yes?" She gave her an interrogation look.

Okay she had opened Pandora's box, now she had to know.. there was no turning back. "Was she Elizabeth?"

"Yes..Why?" Holly eyes's shone in the dark.

"Were you two together? Like, you know.. together."

"We had a relation in college.. " She started saying.. then stopped and curved her lips into a naughty smile. "She cooked for me, I did her homework in return."

Gail exhaled the air than she had been holding for the last minutes. "You're a mean girl, you know that, right?"

"I'm not worse than you." She finally said, closing the distance between them with a kiss.

The brunette loosened the pressure on Gail's arms and cupped her face with her hands.. The blonde automatically responded, placing her hands in her waist, gently touching her hips with the thumbs.

Neither of them noticed the noise that sounded in the park.

After a while, Gail broke off the kiss all of the sudden, her eyes wide opened with surprise. "Holly wait.. I'm wet!" She exclaimed with a sharp voice.

The doctor stared at her confused. "What? I mean.. are you?" She said, excusing herself.

"No! Well, yes.. but I mean.. the fucking sprinklers.." She yelled, looking around. "We're getting wet!"

Holly finally understood and stood up quickly using only one legs.. Gail stared at her from the grass with an accusatory look, arching her eyebrow.. "Alright, you have won this round okay? You don't need to show off."

Holly laughed and offered her hand, the blonde took it.. Then they ran to the car, trying to avoid the bursts of water.
