My Boyfriend, the Greek God
Chapter 10-R.E.D. (Ha, I wonder what does that stand for...)
Thank you for your comments! I didn't get around giving out 100-word sneak peeks yet, so look for them in your PMs if you gave me a long, thoughtful, or funny review. I messed up pretty badly lately, so I need to really step up and study for my finals in two weeks. I update every Thursday, but there might not be one next week.
Thanks to Kat for her Latin pointers, (sorry, I speak four languages fluently but Latin is not one of them) and thanks to my beta ciaomeansbye.
"Hey Annabeth, can you pass me the napkin?" Katie asked and I grunted. I leaned over to the next table, snatched the dispenser and passed her a piece.
"You're pretty grumpy today," She observed.
"Yeah, well, blame the Calculus homework. Related rates are stupid," I said, tapping the papers in front of me. Katie and I were in the media center after a quick lunch, and we were determined to finish our homework as quick as possible.
"So, spill. What's going on between you and Percy?" Katie asked as she snapped her textbook shut and shoved her homework into her backpack.
"Nothing," I nonchalantly replied, not willing to broach the topic.
"There's definitely something," she said. "I know you too well for you to be hiding anything."
"Huh," I commented, smoothed out my blonde hair, and acted disinterested. "So?" I asked trying to seem a bit confused on the question.
"Well, you ought to tell me what's up with you guys. All I know is that Will's completely not okay with it."
"Well, Will's just overprotective. He's never okay with anything," I scoffed. "He has nothing to worry about." I was fairly sure that I wouldn't be mistaken this time around.
"He was right the last time, you know."
I sighed. While Will might be the one who found out Luke's drug dealings in the end, I know for certain that Percy's not like Luke, no matter how mysterious he seemed. I will not be making another mistake like I did with Luke again.
"Yeah, I do... But enough about me, what are you up to? I haven't really sat down with you and talked since school started," I said, trying to vear the topic away from me.
Katie sighed. She knew that she wasn't going anywhere with this.
"Eh. Nothing much. But you know how I help out in the flower shop down the street?" Katie asked and I nodded. She always had an affinity for plants.
"Yeah," I said, prodding her to keep going.
"So, last week, there was this guy-"
"Oh my gosh Katie!" I squealed and leaped out of the chair, genuinely happy for her. Then I looked around and composed myself quickly. I was not known around the school for being preppy.
"-It's not like that!" She said as she tried to fight down the blush forming on her face. "There was this thief," she continued as I raised an eyebrow. "He was like our age, but I don't think he goes to school. Anyhow, he was stealing some flowers."
"Oh?" This story was getting more interesting by the second.
"Yeah, weird, I know. Apparently it was going to be for his mother's birthday. So you know we don't really need a surveillance camera for our small store-after all, who steals flowers? I caught him, and you know what he did?"
I shook my head. Not quite sure what to say. It was sweet for the guy to get his mom flowers, but really, stealing them?
"He tried to distract me by giving me this gold coin as 'payment', and his brother was trying to steal the same thing from my back." Katie huffed, showing me a worn coin.
It had the parthenon on it, along with some scribbles in Greek. When I tried to concentrate on it, it almost seemed like that I can make sense of what it said. I shook my head-I must be hallucinating, I can barely read English and Latin to begin with already.
"It's a drachma, at least I think it is. Judging from the World History textbook and all, you know," I said, giving her back the coin. Who would give up such keepsake though? "So who is he? What happened next?"
"He said his name's Travis Stoll. I'm still not entirely sure whether he made up his last name or not. It's not even a funny pun." Katie bit her lip. "He said he would drop by the shop again, though."
I grinned at her, nudging her shoulder slightly. "Way to go, girl!"
"Yeah, whatever. We talked a little bit-he was a decent person, though. He told me that he goes to some sort of a camp with his brother to work? Or something along those lines. It was weird, but cool to know someone outside of school," She concluded. "Still, I can guarantee you that whatever was going between you and Jackson right there is ten times as interesting as whatever this Travis boy has for me."
We went back to the Calc homework without saying anything else.
"Hey Wise Girl," Percy said as he came into the chemistry room and plopped down beside me.
I barely lifted my head to acknowledge him, since I was engaged reading the instructions for today's lab-something about making a solution to provide alum crystals in order to measure the aluminum content of the mixture.
"Geez, you're making me feel like a bum. I didn't have time to read over this last night..."
I gave a noncommittal grunt, and went back to work.
"Hey, I'm sorry, okay? I'll read over this with you now..." He said, taking his page out and scanning it. I rolled my eyes-obviously I didn't read it last night either, if I were to be pouring over it right now. But I didn't tell him that.
Rachel approached us just a few second later. Ever since the first week, she seemed to be inviting herself to join our little group more and more frequently.
She seated herself between Percy and me, and the slightest speck of annoyance arose within me. She had be a personal nuisance to me recently-I hate to admit this, but I think this had everything to do with Percy.
"Hey Perseus, hey Anna," She said, tying up her wild red hair with a bright green hair band. "Mind if I join again?"
I scowled at her before I could help it, but neither of my friends noticed.
"Sure," Percy said, scooting a bit more to the right to give her space. "Annabeth and I are just reading up. She thinks I didn't prepare enough." He then began to pout.
Rachel smiled at him. "Percy, you're cute." She said-why that little!
Percy didn't even look flustered. He just smiled at her in that familiar way and nodded, as if merely amused. "Why, thank you," He said it in a mock gentlemen voice. "There hasn't been anyone calling me that recently."
I narrowed my eyes but kept my thoughts to myself.
Rachel has alway been regarded as a little bit crazy, and it wasn't the first time she said these kind of things to a guy. She was just being friendly, I chided myself. No need to get all fired up about this. Plus, I'm the one who knows Percy the best in this school, he's not the kind of person to only care about superficial words, right?
But then I really didn't know much about him at all... I've traded my stories with him, but Percy's tales were usually about his cousins instead of himself. Yet somehow those stories were sometimes improbable and unrealistic, too. (He told me that one of his cousins invented the internet-and Lincoln is his second cousin six times removed.) I didn't really know much about him, per say.
And Rachel was still there ogling over him and drawing circles on her paint-splattered jeans.
I stood up and went to gather the materials needed for the lab.
So, comments, questions, wanting to express your unquenched anger? Comment below along with your answers to: how would you rate this story, from 1-10? / Anyone interested in Luke's backstory? / How do you think Tracy's character would be like? / Should I involve more PJO characters? (i.e. Calypso, monsters, gods...)
I'll either update right after finals, or as soon as I hit 120 reviews, whichever comes first. (Before you start saying how's it's impossible, I would like to point out my other PJO fic averages about 110 reviews per chapter.) However, I like this story much more because it opens up so many possibilities. And btw, this is a reboot of my other story, Immortality, so check that out if you haven't already. Thanks for your time!
