Chapter 10 Escape & the End
The humans prepared Yael whom after some good advice from his father to not fight them preparing him until the time came when the Colonel got on him.
Soon they had set everything up for the Colonel to get on Yael. Once the Colonel was on Yael he grabbed onto the reins.
Once the Colonel gave the signal one of the men unlocked the gate and the action started.
Yael did everything his father did when he was in this situation. Once again the Colonel managed to stay on Yael.
Spirit and all of the horses started to worry. None knew why he had done everything that Spirit had done. That's when Yael did it.
Yael rolled on the ground and stilled. He stopped his breathing and closed his eyes.
The Colonel got off of Yael and looked at him in wonder.
"Someone check to see if this horse is alive," the Colonel said.
One of the men went over the fence and ran over to the two. Spirit and the others didn't know what to expect. They didn't know if Yael was dead or not, they also didn't like the suspense that the situation has become.
The only one that may have an idea on what is going on was Spirit but he wasn't about to get his hopes up.
The man knelt down and opened the one eye that was available. He looked and then closed it, getting the answer that was needed.
"Sir this horse is dead."
The Colonel wasn't happy at all and the two of them started to walk away.
All the horses bent their heads down in sadness really believing that their one and only hope was dead.
Yael suddenly sprang up onto his feet and jumped over the fence.
The humans that had gathered around the fence gasped and backed away. The Colonel turned and his eyes widened in surprise.
Both Yael and Spirit neighed and started galloping toward the exit with all the horses in tow.
Everyone backed out of the way not wanting to get ran over by the stampeding herd of horses.
Within moments the horses was out of the place that they considered hell. With Spirit and Yael at the front of the herd they started leading the others back to their homeland.
What surprised them was that the Colonel and his men weren't following them. Then again that could just be because they don't have any horses to follow a herd of horses with.
They travelled for three days nonstop, determined to get to their home.
Soon enough they arrived at their home and they all neighed in happiness. They escaped and they arrived home without losing anyone.
Both Yael and Spirit looked at each other, no words were needed to communicate what needed to be said. Spirit smiled proudly at his son, and Yael gave a small smile back.
Spirit knew that he had his time with the herd, and now it was Yael's time. Knowing where his new place is he bowed his head and stepped back until he was behind Yael with the rest of the herd.
Yael didn't want to admit it but he was surprised that his father did that. He fully was prepared to step down and let him resume as leader of the herd.
In truth though a part of him expected that to happen. Even though his father is back due to the conversation that they had when they were reunited that night.
After the whole incident they weren't bothered by the Colonel or his men ever again. As time went by they got older, eventually Esperanza died of old age. Only a year later both Spirit and Rain died as well.
A year before Esperanza died Yael mated to a Lizie and had female foal. They had decided to name her Melody II after Yael's sister.
Many years later after Spirits decedents die humans came back and captured all of the horses. Those horses are now on farms, used for racing, help herd sheep or cows, push carts, and just serve man in general.
The story of Spirit however lives on. Some say that you can hear the neighs of Spirit and his decedents in the wind. Giving comfort to those that serve man, but more importantly they give hope and comfort to those that are being abused and mistreated.
Some also say that when a horse dies they join Spirit and his decedents. Their herd becoming bigger and bigger as each horse.
Either way the story of Spirit Stallion of the Cimarron still lives on and will continue to do so until the end of time.
