CHAPTER 10
Rapunzel found herself standing on the balcony, staring out at the sun as it slowly rose from behind the kingdom.
It's been so long since she's last seen Eugene. He's been in most of her dreams, lying next to her, holding her close. She savored each moment of this, and broke into tears whenever she woke up from it.
Rapunzel heard footsteps behind her; she turned to find her mother.
"Rapunzel? Darling, have you been here all night? You might catch an illness."
"Don't worry, mother. I've only been here a few minutes."
Queen Catherine knew she was lying. Coming a bit closer, she wrapped Rapunzel in an embrace, telling her, "He's going to be ok, my dear. He's Eugene Fitzherbert. And you and I both know that nothing's impossible for him."
Rapunzel tightened her hold on her mother, burying her face in the croon of her neck to prevent her eyes from welling up with tears.
Mother and daughter hugged, until the queen bade her to go and prepare her breakfast and that she might get some sleep while she waits.
Rapunzel was about to go back to sleep when she felt her stomach grumble. She decided it was best she eat before going back to sleep.
Descending the stairs and heading to the dining hall, she stopped in her tracks when she heard a voice. An all-too-familiar voice.
"Rapunzel?"
She slowly turned around to be happily validated. It was him: her hero; her prince not-so-charming; her new dream.
All words she wished to say were caught in her throat and her eyes were starting to tear up again. She ran to him; the man, bruised and bloody, but no less than handsome, and he caught her in a tight embrace. She released all her tears on his chest, her mouth, now enabling her to speak.
She spoke excitedly between sobs, "E-Eugene! . . . I-I've . . . m-missed you . . . s-so . . . much!"
He whispered to her ear, "And I you, Rapunzel. I've been so lost without you."
She looked up at him, her face wet with tears. Though she wept, she had a wide smile. He was home again, alive.
Eugene wiped away her tears and brushed aside her hair. He held her face near his and took in the beauty that was still there. Her emerald green eyes, the soft curl of her eyelashes. her rosy cheeks. that smile that brightens his day during the war. He then captured her lips in a sweet kiss.
"Boy, do I have a story to tell you." Eugene exclaimed.
Rapunzel let out a giggle and held him closely; yeah, he's definitely back.
