"I want to show you something."

I followed behind, watching her hips sway as she walked. She turned around a large pine, and the black night captured her. I stopped frozen and held my breath.

"Edward?" Her words were soft, not too far away. I took a step forward and stumbled.

"You have terrible night vision." She was much closer this time.

"Yeah, I do. Help!" I yelped like a small child.

Her fingers laced with mine. Relieved, I squeezed her hand and followed her blindly.

"Where are you taking me?"

"You'll see."

"Will I?"

"There's a clearing just around here, then the stars will light the way again. Don't be such a big baby."

Her words were teasing, but they hit hard. I'd been nothing but a baby since coming to visit her. I had no idea she'd be so grown up, so beautiful, so over me, and so obviously happy to bask in many men's compliments. It was new territory for me, and I didn't like it.

"Just up here," she murmured. She pulled me through a patch of trees, and I could see again. Stars blazed in the night sky. I could see why she liked it so much here. She never really fit in the city.

But she did fit with me. This I had decided.

"Check it out," she said, sweeping a hand out toward a dilapidated well.

"Is this where you'll hide my body?"

"What?" She laughed.

"After you defile me?"

"Hmm. I'd use and abuse as long as I could, Edward."

I released her hand and placed my palms along the dusty brick of the well, peering inside. "It doesn't smell like dead bodies."

"Well, that's good."

"Why did you want to show me this?"

"It's a place I go. To get away. To think. I sit up here and read, write—"

"Make wishes?"

"Maybe."

"What do you wish for?"

She came toward me then, eyes fixed on mine. "Moments like this."

"Like what?"

"I don't know. I don't know what I'm saying."

"I think you do."

"Hrm." She stepped beside me, and we peered into the well together, looking into nothingness.

"Why didn't we ever date?"

She exhaled slowly, turned toward me, and shrugged.

"Did you ever want to?"

"Did you?"

"I asked you first."

She says nothing.

"What do you wish for?"

"I told you."

I took a step, placing my leg between hers, and leaned in closer. "Moments like this?"

"Mmmhmm."

"With me?"

She tilted her head just a smidge, eyes twinkling with starlight reflected in them. My lips brushed hers, and I pulled away.

She sighed. "Moments like this. With you."

"We could date now. I did just move here for med school."

"You did. Come on."

"Wait. I have to make a wish." I turned and threw a quarter in the well.

"What did you wish for?"

"Moments like this," I said and tugged her toward me by her belt loop before crushing my lips to hers.
