Steam billowed around me as I shampooed my hair and attempted to wash the smell of lake water out of it. Raven and I had gone to the beach and spent most of the day there. It was hot and uncomfortable for most of the day so we spent most of it in the water and I felt absolutely disgusting. Not to mention the fact that I'd gotten a bit sunburnt and felt as though the skin on my shoulders would fall off or burst into flames at any given moment.
To make it all worse, as we were getting ready to leave, we walked past a group of college boys and some half drunk frat boy had spilled his cup of beer all over me. Not only did it stink and stick to my skin, but it had ruined my bikini top. After half heartedly apologizing for the incident, he had the audacity to ask for my number.
So I figured after a day of being burned to a crisp and hit on by horny frat boys, I was entitled to a nice, relaxing shower. Apparently not. Because as I rinsed my hair, the bathroom door flew open and my sister screamed "I have made a discovery."
I groaned. "Rae, can we talk later? I just really want to shower."
"Do you want to see Luke or what?" She asked.
I stuck my head out around the shower curtain. "Of course I do. Why?"
"Well, since we got home, I've been doing some math. We have enough money in our savings accounts to get us back to Sydney. We'll obviously have to start working at the pub again once we get back or find other jobs to keep us going. But we have enough to fly back. If we can get everything sorted and get on a plane within the next week, you'll get to see Luke for his 18th birthday." She explained.
"Two seconds." I stated and finished rinsing my hair before wrapping a towel around myself and stepping out of the shower.
"What do you think?" She asked as I wiped steam from the mirror.
I stared at her reflection beside my own and nodded. "Let's go home."
She grinned. "Get dressed and come to my room. We'll start planning this out."
She ran to her bedroom and I dried off before slipping into shorts and a loose tank top.
I towel dried my hair as best as I could and walked into Raven's room and took a seat on the bed.
Raven was perched at her desk with her laptop in front of her. "Okay, so, Luke's birthday is on the sixteenth, today is the seventh, so I think we should fly out on the twelfth. That will give us a few days to get settled in before his birthday because we all know it's going to be a crazy party. There are seats left for a one stop flight from Chicago to Sydney leaving at seven pm on the eleventh. We would arrive in Sydney around three pm on the twelfth. However, the tickets are only coach. And I know that we both hate flying coach, but it would also help save a load of money. So what do you think?"
"I think you already figured this out perfectly without me." I laughed.
"Well, I know that you hate planning stuff like this out so I did most of it. I just want to make sure you're good with everything and if there's anything I'm forgetting. And I mean, I want to see Michael and I know you want to see Luke." She shrugged.
"You make it seem like I've been talking about him nonstop or something." I said.
Raven frowned briefly. "I overheard you on the phone with him two days ago. I didn't mean to eavesdrop. I was coming to your room to ask you about something, I don't remember what, but I went to knock on the door and I heard you crying. You had it on speaker and I heard him say I miss you and you started crying more and saying that you miss him so I just walked away and let you finish talking to him. And when you slept in here last night, you kept talking about him in your sleep. And you've just been so reserved and it's weird. It's not hard to tell that you miss him."
I stared at a scar on my knee and chewed my lip. "I just got so close to him, obviously. It's weird not having him around to talk to or like, cuddle with. He's my second best friend, ya know?"
"Behind Mom?" She asked.
I shook my head. "Behind you."
She grinned. "Don't worry, okay. You'll see him soon enough, I promise."
I nodded.
"Should I book the flight?" She asked, brushing her too long bangs out of her eyes.
I smiled. "Yeah. Book the flight. I'll call Ash and Cal now and tell them the plan. We can call Luke and Mikey a couple of days before we head out so it's a bit more of a surprise."
She nodded. "Good idea."
I unlocked my iPhone and dialed Ashton's number. He answered on the second ring.
"Hey, Phoenix! What's up?" He asked.
"Are you currently with Calum?" I asked.
He paused, thrown off by my abruptness. "He's upstairs, why?"
"Go to him. Go to him now. I have something to tell you guys. And just you and Cal, make sure Luke and Michael can't hear. It's important." I said.
I heard his large feet make contact with the wood flooring as he bounded up the stairs then heard the sound of a door open and close.
He said something to Calum and there was some shuffling and then Ashton finally said "Okay, we're here."
"Hi, Cal." I said.
"Hi! We miss you guys. How are you? How's Raven?" He asked.
"I'm good, so is Rae. Raven, say hi to Cal and Ash!" I said and held the phone closer to Raven.
"Hi, guys!" She called out, still focused on booking our flight.
I put the phone back to my ear. "So, we have good news."
I heard an intake of breath from both the boys.
Calum chuckled. "Let me guess, we'll be seeing you soon."
I grinned. "Yep. Raven pointed out that we have enough money to fly back and if we can do it soon, we'll be there for Luke's 18th and I mean, I desperately need to be there for that. So, Raven is currently booking a onestop flight from Chicago to Sydney leaving at seven pm on the eleventh and arriving around three pm on the twelfth. That would give us time to get settled in and back to the swing of things before the party. We're going to tell Luke and Michael a few days before we fly in."
"I like this plan. And I promise we won't say anything to either of them." Ash said.
"Good. It's important for it to be a surprise. Or at least a little bit."
"It's good that you're coming back. Luke's ex has been trying to get back with him for the past couple weeks." Calum stated.
"Aleisha?" I asked.
Ashton cleared his throat. "Uh, yeah. She keeps showing up at the house asking him to hang out and stuff. It's a little sad, really."
I chewed my lip nervously.
"Stop that. I know what you're doing. You're going to bite your lip off." Ashton said.
I groaned. "What if he wants to go back to her instead of me?"
"Did you hear that?" Calum asked. "It was the sound of us rolling our eyes aggressively. He's not going to pick her, Phoenix. He loves you a million times more than he loved her."
I sighed. "I hope so."
"He does." Ash assured me.
I smiled a little. "I love you guys. "
"We love you." They chorused.
"I gotta go, guys. But I'll talk to you soon." I said.
"Okay! Bye." Ash chirped.
"See you on the twelfth!" Calum said.
"See you on the twelfth."
With that, I hung up and tossed my phone to side and flopped back on Raven's amazingly soft bed.
I heard feet on the stairs and a knock on the bedroom door.
"Come in." Raven called.
The door opened and mom came inside and sat beside me. "What are you girls doing?"
I glanced at Raven and she met my eyes, looking slightly panicked. We hadn't quite thought of a way to break the news to mom that we were leaving again.
I opened my mouth to say something but Raven shook her head. "Let's get it over with."
"Mom, we want to go home." I said.
Her smile fell.
"It's not that we don't want to stay here with you." Raven jumped in.
"It's just that Sydney is home for us now. Do you remember how you told us you felt when you moved here from Minnesota? Our Sydney is like your Chicago." I explained.
She nodded. "I understand. It's just that the house is so empty without you girls here."
Raven picked at the nail polish on her thumb, a nervous habit. "Mom, you know we would come home more if we could. We just don't have a lot of money for it. Don't have a lot of money for anything, really."
"I can pay for you to come home sometimes, if you want to. I still get money from your father and my paycheck isn't exactly small." She said with a small laugh.
"That sounds good, Mom. But you know we can't do it often. We'll have jobs and lives that we can't just abandon." I stated.
"You don't have to very often. I just want to see you every now and then."
Raven and I nodded.
"We'll come see you. Maybe you could come see us too." Raven said.
Mom smiled. "I would like to come see you girls."
"So you're okay with us going?" I asked.
She nodded. "Yeah. I'm alright with it."
Raven came over and we wrapped our arms around our mother. "We love you so much."
"I love you too." Mom whispered.
"We should pack." Raven said and I grinned.
"We should pack."
And we did.
Mom helped Raven pack since she hates it so much and during that, Raven explained the plans for flying out.
Meanwhile, I went to my own room and started repacking the bags that I'd barely had the heart to unpack.
This time I packed everything. Not just what I'd packed the first time around. I completely emptied my closet and dresser into my red, rolling suitcases.
Then I decided to pick out what I was going to wear on the flight because I wanted to be comfortable but I wanted to look cute too.
I decided on a pair of denim shorts with this white crochet design along the bottom of the legs, Luke's You Comeplete Mess tank top I'd kept, my favorite Roxy flip flops, and my Chicago beanie. It looked cute but it wasn't overdone and I could get away with not wearing a lot of makeup.
"Your hair's gotten longer. A lot longer. It's halfway down your back." Mom said from my doorway.
I turned around with a smile. "Yeah. I just cut it a while ago but it grows so damn fast, just like yours does."
She nodded. "One of the many things you got from me. Except the eyes. You girls got your dad's eyes."
I smiled. "So we've been told."
She looked at the outfit laying on my bed. "Where did you get that top?"
"It's Luke's, actually. I kind of hijacked it a long time ago and just never gave it back. It's comfortable and it's his, so I like it." I shrugged.
"What an interesting phrase." She said.
I laughed. "I kind of love it, honestly. There's this really cool brand of clothes in Australia called UNIF and they make tons of rad shirts like this."
I reached into my suitcase and pulled out my favorite tank top and held it up.
"Don't say anything to drugs. They can't hear you." Mom read from the front of it and laughed. "That's actually very clever."
I smiled and folded the shirt back into my suitcase and zipped it up.
My phone which was laying on the desk started playing Sirens by Cher Lloyd and I recognized it as Luke's ringtone and immediately hit answer.
"Hello?" I said and Mom slipped out of my room to give me some privacy.
"Hey, babe." He chirped.
I grinned. "Hi."
"I miss you."
"I miss you too, Lukey." I whispered.
"Can I tell you a secret?" He asked.
I laughed. "It won't very well be a secret if you tell me."
"It's not actually a secret but I think you and your sister should probably check Twitter. It's quite urgent, actually. Whenever you're done doing that, give me a call back." He said.
"Why is it so urgent?" I asked.
He groaned. "You are so difficult, I swear. Just check it out, babe. It's worth it, I pinkie promise."
I laughed. "Fine. I'll call you back in like five minutes."
He hung up immediately and I went into Raven's room. "Luke says we should check Twitter. It is urgent."
"Oh god. Is another band breaking up?" She asked, looking startled.
I shrugged. "He wouldn't tell me."
I sat next to her on the bed and we opened our twitters to see that we each had over 100 notifications.
"Jesus christ. What the hell happened?" Raven asked, skimming some of the mentions.
"Why are we being mentioned by fans in reference to a 5 Seconds Of Summer song?" I asked.
We shared a look. "No."
She went to Michael's account and I to Luke's.
Luke had tweeted me. "Phoenix_Louise Hey, babe, I miss you loads. Check out this cute song that may or may not be about you a little bit."
"Did Michael tweet you a link to youtube?" I asked Raven.
She nodded and showed me the tweet from him. "TomDelongeCock I love you, cutie. I wrote part of this girly song for you. Miss you x."
I tapped the link the boys had tweeted, turned up the volume on my phone, and held it so that Ravena and I could both see the screen.
The title of the song was Wherever You Are and I found myself tear up a bit before the song even started.
The video started with the boys sitting in a circle. Luke held his acoustic guitar, Michael held is electric guitar, Calum had his bass, and Ashton was seated behind his drumkit.
I felt my chest tighten when I saw Luke wearing the Nirvana shirt I'd gotten for him. Then he started strumming and my chest tightened more.
The screen cut away from the boys in a circle to a clip of Raven and I with Michael and Luke. Raven and Michael were laying beside each other on the sofa and I was perched in Luke's lap on the loveseat, idly playing with his hair. We were all laughing about some amazing joke Michael had made.
It cut back to the boys and that's when Luke started singing. "For a while we pretended, that we never had to end it, but we knew we'd have to say goodbye. You were crying at the airport, when they finally closed the plane door, I could barely hold it all inside."
I paused the video briefly and looked at Raven.
She was crying. I was crying. I didn't expect the rest of the video to go well for us.
I pressed play.
A clip of Raven pushing Michael on the swings at the park came up followed by a clip of me and Luke hanging from the monkey bars because we were having a competition to see who could last the longest.
"Torn in two, and I know I shouldn't tell you, but I just can't stop thinking of you, wherever you are, you, wherever you are. Every night I almost call you, just to say it always will be you, wherever you are."
After another clip of the boys performing, it showed Raven wriggling around, trying to get away from Ashton who was trying to pin her to the ground in order to win their impromptu wrestling match which took place in the backyard. Then it flashed to me and Calum staring intently into a large pot of pasta that we'd somehow managed to burn while attempting to make spaghetti.
"I could fly a thousand oceans, but there's nothing that compares to, what we had and so I walk alone. I wish I didn't have to be gone, maybe you've already moved on, but the truth is I don't want to know."
It showed the boys playing for that verse and at the start of the chorus, it showed me and Ashton sitting beside each other on the sofa looking completely disgusted by what was on the television screen. Then the camera turned to show Raven holding up a dvd case for the Human Centipede and laughing.
Next it showed Raven and Calum chasing a small rabbit around the backyard. It had just rained so Calum had slipped on the wet grass and busted his ass. Raven was just a step behind him so she tripped over him and fell beside him and they looked so frustrated as the bunny managed to get away.
"You can say we'll be together, someday, nothing lasts forever, nothing stays the same, so why can't I stop feeling this way?"
The boys sang for a few more seconds and the last three clips showed up as the final chorus played. The first one was Michael and I hopping from chair to sofa, from sofa to loveseat, from loveseat to coffee table, and back to the chair again in a drunken game of The Floor Is Hot Lava. The second was Luke and Raven violently jamming the buttons of Xbox controllers and shouting as the played a very intense game of Fifa.
The last showed all of us together, laying on the sofa in a tangle of limbs. Luke was laying at one end, Raven at the other. I was laying over Luke with my legs on Raven, Michael was laying over Raven and my legs. Ashton cuddled Michael and Raven as Calum snuggled up on top of Luke and I.
Everyone was laughing and as the music faded out you could hear Calum shout "I don't know which legs are my legs!"
Raven and I laughed as the screen faded to black. I dropped my phone and looked over at my sister. She was still crying. I was also still crying. We hugged tightly.
That video had just reminded us of exactly why we needed to go home.
We had four loveable idiots that we had to get back to.
