L blinked as the sun hit his face, bringing his hand up to cover his eyes. When the bed shifted beside him, he squinted to see who it was.
"Good morning."
"Light?" he asked, his throat a little sore. He looked at his outline, confusion on his face.
"What is it?" Light asked, a little concerned.
"You're… still here," he murmured.
"Of course I am," Light said, "Did you think I wouldn't be?"
"It's just… when I sleep the people I love are there, and when I wake up, they aren't there anymore."
Light smiled warmly, lifting a hand to touch L's face.
"I'm still here," Light said, "Just like I promised, okay?"
"Hmm," L nodded, closing his eyes again, "Okay."
"And," Light added, "If you really want proof that it wasn't a dream, you could try to get up, although I wouldn't recommend it."
L smiled at what was being implied.
"No, I think I'll spend at least the better part of the morning in bed," he said. Light chuckled leaning over to kiss L on his forehead. A sudden beeping from the direction of L's desk interrupted them.
"That's Watari," L said, turning to look at his laptop. Light rolled out of bed in response, revealing that he'd been up at least long enough to put on a new pair of underwear. L smirked.
He's meticulous in ALL of his habits apparently.
Light pressed down on the button next to the small microphone that was plugged into the computer.
"Yeah?" he asked, "What is it?"
"Light," Watari said from the other line, "Is Ryuuzaki still asleep?"
"Well, no, but he is still in bed," Light said, choosing his words carefully.
"I see," Watari responded, he tone suggesting that he knew exactly what was going on, "Well perhaps you could relay a message to him."
Light looked back and saw that L was indeed paying attention to Watari.
"No need, he's listening in," he informed him.
"Well, in that case, it has been drawn to my attention that the taskforce has been disbanded. That said, it seems unnecessary that the Kira investigation be continued."
"Light, please bring me the computer," L said.
Light picked up the laptop and the microphone, pulling the charger loose so that he could set it on L's chest.
"Watari. Can you hear me?" L asked, staring at the 'W' on his computer screen as if he could gage the man's emotions through that.
"Ryuuzaki, as I said, it is my belief that the continuation of the Kira investigation is pointless."
Light found himself staring at the computer as well, wondering what had happened to warrant the conversation.
"Yes, in this you are correct," L stated, "The most likely case scenario is that Kira misplaced the notebook and died in consequence of the thirteen day rule."
"Understood," Watari responded, "I will take all necessary steps to close the case."
"Thank you, Watari," L said.
"Hang on -"
"Now, on a lighter note," Watari said, "Is there anything either of you would care to have for breakfast?"
"A cinnamon bun would be wonderful," L said.
"And what about Light?"
"…"
"Light," L said, poking him.
"Oh, uh… what?"
"Do you want anything for breakfast?" L asked.
"Oh. Eggs, I guess."
"He said he wants eggs," L repeated into the microphone.
"Very well. I'll be up with that in a moment."
With that, the connection was cut. L turned to Light, trying to understand what he was thinking about. He had never seen Light so lost in his thoughts that he failed to respond to his surroundings.
"Light? Is something the matter?" he asked tentatively.
"No, I just… Watari knew all along, didn't he?" Light sighed.
"Most likely," L said, "As a matter of fact, I believe he expected this outcome from the beginning."
Light pinched the bridge of his nose, "I was an idiot, wasn't I?"
"No," L said, "You made many bad decisions, yes, but it was not due to ignorance. It was due to a warped view of the way things are, which I do not believe to be your fault."
"Then who's fault was it?" Light asked, looking into L's dark eyes, finding nothing but sympathy there.
"Well, one way of looking at it is that it is no one's fault," L said slowly, knowing he was nearing a landmine.
"Assuming that it was my depression," Light sighed, "So what's the other way of looking at it?"
"That theory doesn't necessarily imply it was your depression to blame exclusively. In fact, no matter which theory we choose to accept, the main factor would be the temptations provided by the notebook," L said, "But in regards to my other theory, perhaps your view of the world was influenced by the environment you were raised in."
"What?" Light asked, his eyes widening.
"Your father is the chief of police. That alone could have influenced what kind of people you thought were prominent in the world."
"Either way, I'm still the only person at fault," Light sighed, burying his face in his hands.
"I don't believe that to be true," L said, pushing the laptop off of him and setting it on the floor, propping himself up on his elbows.
"What do you mean?" Light asked, looking up at him.
"If you recall, when the topic of my parents was brought up, you asked me if they were abusive. You seemed strangely sympathetic."
"Well, who wouldn't be?" Light said quickly, "After all, I care about you, so it makes sense that I would -"
"Light, please take this seriously," L stated.
"I am," he insisted.
"Then tell me, was the incident after your father found out you weren't taking your medication the first time he tried to hit you?"
Light froze. For a moment, time seemed to freeze.
"My dad would never -"
"Don't lie to me!" L snapped.
"I…"
"Light, I do not approve of your father's methods of raising you. That said, he will face no legal consequences due to anything you tell me now if you don't wish it."
"No," Light sighed, "No, it wasn't the first time he tried to hit me. And… I'm sorry for lying."
"You're forgiven," L stated, "But next time I'll have to kick you."
"I don't plan on there being a next time," Light said.
"Light, you said that that wasn't the first time your father tried to hit," L said, "So let me ask you this. How many times did he succeed?"
"A few," Light admitted, folding his hands in his lap.
"Light, I plan to relocate my headquarters to England once the Kira case is officially closed. There is an orphanage there that was founded Watari. I was raised there for about five years before becoming L."
"Why are you saying this now?" Light asked, afraid that L would be leaving him to go back to England.
"Where would you live once the Kira case is closed?" L asked.
"I… guess I would move back in with my family, at least until I could get my own apartment."
"Would you be happy in that situation?" L prompted.
"Well, it's how I've lived my whole life, so -"
"Yes, but would you be happy?" L repeated.
"I… no," Light sighed, "No, I don't think I would be."
"I have one more question," L said.
"Okay," Light said, completely unaware of what the question would be.
"Would you be happy if you came back to England with me?"
"…"
"…"
"What?!" Light burst, leaning forward on the bed, his eyes like that of a child on Christmas morning, "Are you serious? Go to England? With you?! Of course!"
"Well. That went better than I expected."
"Of course I'll come with you to England," Light beamed, "I can't believe you even had to ask. The way you said it made me worry you were leaving me behind."
"That wouldn't be very nice," L commented. Light laughed and leaned forward, yanking L into a crushing hug.
"Uh, Light, my back is still sore," L reminded, his voice a mix between pain and amusement.
"Oh, sorry," Light said quickly, lowering L back onto the bed.
"Now what I want to know is what could be taking Watari so long in bringing us breakfast," L said, pouting slightly.
"Hey," Light smiled, "We've got the rest of our lives to eat breakfast together."
"Yes," L whined, "But I want it now…"
They both laughed.
