Chapter 10
*Mitchie's PoV*
"Dad, come on!" I sighed in annoyance. "I can make it into school on my own." He honest to god wanted to accompany me until I've reached my class room. Does someone really have to explain to him why that was such a bad idea?
"Alright, alright, I'm going." He grinned. "But I'll be back to pick you up. Don't you even think of walking back home."
"Dad the only thing I'll be doing is limping. I think I can forget the whole walking thing for a while now."
"Whatever you say. I'll be back later."
I waved goodbye and then he drove off. I took a short calming breath and limped my way to the school gates as quickly as I could. It sounded pretty quiet so I guessed that I was late once again. But this time I didn't have to worry, at least I had a reasonable excuse this time. And the teachers would probably be a bit nicer to me. Yeah, sure and Elvis Presley sleeps in my backpack. I would be in huge trouble once again, just because my dad once again couldn't stop is gossiping session with Alex's dad. I always thought that women were the ones to be able to gossip for ages, but then I spent some time with my dad and Jerry. They got every gossip queen of the country beat!
I took another deep breath and moved as fast as my leg allowed me to through the school gates – just to make a one eighty. There on the school yard stood three people: Alex, Caitlyn and Britney. I had expected Alex and Caitlyn to wait for me. Nate would have probably been there as well but he had a really important exam first thing in the morning. But what was Britney doing there? That was scaring me. I mean, she was alright before the whole superstar thing. I actually liked her. But then from one day to the next she started acting strange. It got to the point where all she did was creeping me out.
I heard the school door shut and peeked around the gate. Looked like Britney went inside, but I glanced around the yard just to be on the safe side. "Is she gone?" I yelled to the girls. I knew I was acting like an idiot but I was in no mood to have creepy encounters this early in the morning.
Alex started laughing but Caitlyn stayed totally serious. "Yep, gone." She replied, causing Alex to laugh even louder. I grinned and stepped through the gates. The crutches made it hard for me to cover the distance between the three of us, which seemed to amuse Alex even more.
"I've got no idea how you put up with her." Caitlyn said when I finally got to them and pointed over her shoulder towards the school doors where Britney must have disappeared to.
"Me neither." I sighed. "She is actually pretty creepy."
"Alright, let's get to class before Mr. Martin comes back out here and we get into actual trouble this time." Alex said. She walked off and Caitlyn and I followed her.
This whole truce thing between us was actually pretty awesome. It was a whole lot easier to concentrate if I wasn't worrying about causing an argument or fight by talking to her. My mood just seemed to get better and better. Strange, but I didn't mind getting used to it.
We stepped into our History class. Miss Escobar threw an angry look at the three of us, but didn't say anything. Yes, not detention this time. We all went to our table at the back of the class. I don't know what it is with our teacher but she seems to think that group work is fantastic, probably because she doesn't have to actually do anything if we work in groups. That's why all of the tables were for four people: Alex, me, Caitlyn and Kate.
For once the lesson went by fast. Alex said it was because of the interesting task, but I think it was because of the group we had to work in. Caitlyn on her own is already funny but pair her up with Alex and Kate and they will make your day!
"Okay, what do we have next?" I asked after the bell rung.
"Break" was Alex's reply and I think for the first time in forever I left it at that.
Nate was already waiting for us, waving frantically when we reached the cafeteria.
"Can you be any slower?" he grinned when we sat down at a random table. I had the strong urge to hit him with one of my crutches for that joke. But that would only get me suspended, so I just ignored him.
"How was your exam? Caitlyn asked and looked curiously at Nate.
"Well, just how tests usually are." Nate shrugged. He has always been a bit smarter than everyone else, but he didn't exactly shout it from the roof tops. What was a normal, easy test for him, was hard work for the rest of us.
"You really have to tutor me some time, super-brain." Alex said and Nate grinned.
"I'm sorry, but you can't afford me." Nate replied.
"I'm a superstar, I can afford anything." She made a weird gesture with her hand and threw her hair back in perfect diva manner.
Caitlyn and Nate started laughing, with me following just a few seconds later. I could honestly get used to these kinds of breaks.
As per usual break was over way too soon and we made our way over to the gym. I hoped that Coach would give me an actually useful task to do, simply sitting around doing nothing just wasn't my thing. P.E. was my absolute favorite subject and now all I would get to do for weeks is sit on the bleachers and watch. Breaking your leg seriously sucks!
"Alright guys!" the substitute teacher shouted when everyone had finally gathered in the gym. "Coach Carl won't be here the next couple of weeks so I will take over your P.E. lessons."
"What is going on with Coach?" Alex wanted to know.
"That is none of your concern." The substitute cancelled her off.
I put the work sheets I was supposed to fill out to my side and watched my classmates curiously. Even teachers had by now understood that you can't get Alex to be quiet with the whole That-is-none-of-you-concern-reply. The most of them had given up on making her be quiet anyway, because that just wasn't possible!
"May I add that this is very well my concern?" she said pointedly friendly.
"And why?"
"Because I'm his favorite student and he is a very good friend of my dad. I'll get to know the reason anyway. But I would prefer to know the reason know instead of having to run home to figure out what is going on with a close family friend and because of that miss valuable and important school lessons."
I suppressed my laughter whilst I watched the teacher's expression got from slightly pissed to questioning to downright overwhelm. He sighed, stepped a couple of yards back and motioned Alex to follow him. She threw a short grin at Caitlyn and Nick before going over to the teacher who started talking quietly to her. After a couple of minutes the conversation seemed to be over and Alex made her way back to Caitlyn and Nick. But half way there she seemed to change her mind and instead came towards me. Caitlyn and Nick swapped a glance before coming over as well. "Since when is your dad friends with Coach Carl?" Nick asked her perplexed when everyone had finally reached my place on the bleachers. "Since never" she smirked, "I just wanted to know why we've got a substitute." Before any of us could reply to that statement the teacher blew his whistle signaling for everyone to make their way to the middle of the court. I sighed and threw one last longing glance at my classmates, who were pairing off into teams to play dodge ball, before turning my attention back to my worksheets.
A/N: I know it's been kinda slow but I promise the story will pick up speed soon!
