"My name it is Maria, a merchant's daughter fair,

And I have left my parents and three thousand pounds a year,

My heart is pierced by Cupid, I disdain all glittering gold,

There is nothing can console me but my jolly sailor bold"

-"My Jolly Sailor Bold"

I Disdain All Glittering Gold

Chapter Ten

A/N: I'm know there was quite a wait for Chapter Nine, and I apologize for that! However, I was sad to see that there were no reviews for that chapter! Please review this time! If I don't receive at least two reviews for this chapter, I will have to put it on hiatus. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but I need feedback! Anyway, enjoy.

Jack was seated back in his throne, and Marina had to look away when she saw the gift the savages had thrust upon him. A necklace strung with human toes. Lovely.

She was kneeling next to him at his throne, hoping dearly that she wasn't to be offered a similar gift. She sat up, straining her neck to see what they were going to do with Will.

Jack had been nothing but useless, making jokes and the like, ignoring her desperation. But Marina sensed something wasn't right. Jack didn't have full command of these people- any minute now, they could turn on him.

The cannibals were still chanting and dancing around, beginning to build a fire.

"Jack," Marina hissed, "do something."

Jack stood up and meandered over to the fire.

He shouted some sort of direction in his made-up language, intermittent with English remarks, telling the cannibals to "make a bigger fire".

Marina wasn't quite sure what Jack was doing, but she blinked her eyes, and he was gone.

Damn that stupid pirate.

The cannibals turned to her.

"Uh," Marina thought quickly, "snick snacker hoodle doo...um...I've got to...go. Queen duties, you know?"

She sprinted off after Jack, breathing heavily.

"What the hell are we doing, you bloody lunatic?!" Marina shouted as she began to catch up with Jack.

He'd ran across the narrow bridge, and was now looking around desperately for something.

"A well mannered young lady doesn't speak like that," Jack reminded her distractedly.

"It's a bit late to make me well mannered," Marina said through gritted teeth, "what are you looking for?"

"Hmm," Jack grabbed hold of a long bamboo pole, inspecting it.

Clearly not satisfied, he ran into a hut filled with a collection of forgotten items.

Marina was beginning to grow impatient, her mind working fast. There had to be some way out of this.

"Sparrow- we better be saving my brother, or I'll have your head."

Jack grabbed a coil of rope and a can labeled "paprika".

But when they left the hut, they found the entirety of the cannibal village awaiting them.

"Oh bugger," Jack spoke the words that Marina was thinking.

Jack hesitated, then grabbed the paprika and sprinkled some of it on his armpits.

Marina wrinkled her nose in distaste.

"Little seasoning, aye?"

"Jack, I don't think they like spicy food..."

The savages stared at them a while longer, assessing the situation.

The next thing they knew, the two of them were tied to bamboo poles and laid out above a fire.

"You know that thing," Marina struggled to say, "where you seem like you have a plan? When you have that mischievous look in your eye? Why is it that those plans never seem to work."

"Sticks and stones, love," Jack muttered.

Suddenly, amidst more ceremonial chanting and drumming, there was an interruption.

A single cannibal ran forward, shouting something that sounded urgent.

"Well, go on!" Jack prompted, and the cannibals ran across the bridge.

"Okay," Jack wriggled around to face Marina, "try and bounce yourself off these hooks."

It was easier suggested than done, as Marina was having a very hard time mustering enough strength to even stir her pole. She was exhausted, and had very little energy.

"Come on!"

Finally, Jack sprung himself loose and was on the ground, struggling to stand himself up.

Marina wondered to herself whether Jack would stay behind to help her. The easy answer would be that of course he would. However, Jack had a history of being untrustworthy and unpredictable.

This question, however, didn't need to be answered today, it seemed, as Marina managed to roll herself onto the ground on her own.

She and Jack both attempted to stand themselves up. They managed to get on their feet, though having to bend forward with the weight of the poles.

After fighting their way through fruit-throwing cannibals, and flipping across hills, dangling from ropes by their feet, and falling to the bottom of a giant pit, Marina and Jack began running as fast as their legs would take them, across the beach.

They could see the Black Pearl, not 20 meters away, but they were being closely pursued by the cannibals.

"Curse this wretched dress!" Marina shrieked.

She could see Will, staring wide eyed, and then hurrying to crew to ready to leave.

"Hurry up, Jack!"

They splashed through the waves, and grabbed hold of the rope on the edge of the ship.

The cannibals stopped in their tracks, roaring in disappointment.

"Alas, my children!" Jack called, "this is the day that you will always remember as the day-" a splash of water hit Jack's face and he began to choke violently.

"For Fu-," another spray of ocean mist hit Marina this time, "'s sake!"

Will offered his hand to Marina, pulling her up onto the deck, and then doing the same for Jack.

"What did I say about that tongue or yours?" Jack shook his head at Marina.

"What about my sister's tongue?" Will's face darkened with concern.

"ARGH!" Marina replied, trudging into the ship's cabin to dry off.

"Women," Jack through his arms up in confusion.

"Will," Marina approached her brother, an hour later.

She had changed into some extra pirate's clothing: tight trousers, a tattered white shirt, and a vest.

"Where are we going now?"

The young woman strained her eyes at the sea ahead of them. It seemed like they were heading in a direction that wasn't Port Royal.

"It's complicated," Will took a deep breath, putting his arm around his younger sister.

"Will. The only reason we are on this silly ship again, is to save Elizabeth. Why aren't we heading to Port Royal?"

It wasn't as if, truly, Marina had any desire to go back to that wretched place. She knew that after the wedding, she wouldn't have much of a future.

She was an adult now, so she didn't have to stay in the brothel anymore. However, Marina had very little skills in any other area, and found herself feeling helpless and worried for what the future had in store for her.

But Elizabeth's safety was more important than any of that, and, in order to ensure her safety, she knew they must make for Port Royal.

"Jack and I have made a deal."

"You know that isn't wise," Marina warned him.

"Of course I know, Marina. But sometimes we have to make difficult decisions. The only way I can make sure Elizabeth is safe, is if I help Jack with something."

"What are you helping him with?"

Will hesitated.

"Marina...I think it's best if you don't know. It's tricky business, and I don't want you involved."

"If you didn't want me involved, I wouldn't be on this ship, wearing pirates clothing," Marina pointed out softly.

Will shook his head, releasing his sister from his embrace.

"Where we're heading next...could be dangerous. I wish I could protect you forever, Marina, but I know that's not always going to be something I can do. I know you can take care of yourself," he added, predicting how Marina would react.

"So I hope I can trust you to make the right decisions. Stick by my side, do as I say, and most importantly," Will gave his sister an urgent look, "don't get caught up in the mystery that is Jack Sparrow."

Marina nodded slowly.

She would try her very best.
