Earlier in the day when Jarvis informed Tony that Sam was taken away by two SHIELD Agents Tony went straight to Fury and confronted him about interrogating one of his employees. When he talked to Fury he expressed his outrage at the interrogation. Fury then told him that he only did a background check on Chloe to make sure she could be a trustworthy employee for Tony. However, the background check revealed that Chloe Beckett disappeared and a body was found in the proximity of where she disappeared. He told Tony that he had a hunch that the Chloe he employed wasn't really Chloe Beckett and instead she was pretending to be Chloe to get a job from him. Fury also said he suspected that she was a spy.
When Tony was confronted with Fury's information he lied and said that his father was friends with Chloe's mother and that he had known Chloe since she was a little girl. He explained that the Chloe he employed was the real Chloe Beckett and she was not a spy and instead she was a friend. Fury saw no reason to think that Tony was lying and he agreed to stop the investigation into Chloe Beckett. After their conversation Tony went and got Sam from the interrogation room.
Later in the day after Steve, Tony, and Sam had their conversation about bringing Sam to Fury they headed back to the SHIELD building. When they entered the building they headed to Fury's office. On the way to his office a few of the SHIELD agents tried to stop them because Tony and Steve were escorting someone who didn't have clearance to be in the building. Whenever approached Tony waved them off and said that they were on their way to see Fury. The agents then left them on their way, not wanting to get in trouble with Fury.
When they got to Fury's office they busted in through the door without knocking. When they entered the office Fury looked up from what he was doing and got an upset look on his face because not only did they barge into his office but they also interrupted what he was doing. As Fury was standing it appeared that he was going to say something so Tony raised this hand and was about to talk but before he could say anything Fury cut him off.
"Stark, don't even say a word. You already gave me the riot act and I don't want to hear it again."
"Well… as much as I'd love to do that … that is not why we're here."
Fury walked over to them and stood in front of them.
"Then why are you here?"
"Well… we're here because of her," Tony said as he pointed at Sam, who was in Chloe's appearance.
"You're Chloe Beckett…" Fury stated.
Fury stuck out his hand and both him and Sam shook hands.
"I'm sorry about the mix up earlier but with what Tony does we can never be too safe about who he employees."
"Thank you for that… but that is not the reason I am here."
"Would someone just cut to the chase and tell me why you three are here?" Fury said slightly irritated.
"I need your help… Steve said you'd be willing to help me."
"My willingness to help… depends on what your problem is."
Sam looked at Tony and then to Steve to make sure she could trust Fury. When she looked to Tony he nodded and when she looked at Steve he nodded. Since both of them gave her the seal of approval she believed she could trust Fury. Instead of saying anything to Fury she decided to just show him her ability. She turned to Fury and transformed herself from Chloe, to Tony, and then to her true appearance. After she transformed herself Fury looked her over.
"I was expecting something like this. I don't know why I ever listen to you Stark?"
"Maybe it's because I am so good looking."
Fury glared at Tony. He then turned to Sam.
"With this great ability… why would you need my help?"
"It's not so much my ability that I need help with… I need help with not having to hide behind Chloe Beckett anymore."
"You have obviously taken Chloe Beckett's identity but what is stopping you from being yourself?"
"It's sort of a long story… do you have the time for it?"
"With your ability… I'm willing to listen as long as you need me to."
Sam told Fury the story of everything that had happened to her.
"So you are telling me that a private school took in kids and experiment on them?"
"Yes."
"But what happened to all the other kids that were in the school?"
"I don't know. That is another reason I need your help. They were still locked in the school when I escaped and I don't know what happened to them. You see Sir, it isn't just me who needs your help."
"I don't know what SHIELD can do with such little information about the experiments. Maybe if you explained more we could work on putting together an investigation into finding them."
"I don't know how much more I can tell you."
"Do you remember what the person in charge of the experiments looked like? If we knew what he looks like we can run facial recognition of people we know are in the serum making business. If he's in there it can give us a start on where to find the rest of the students."
"The person who seemed to be in control of the school was the principal. I met him once but I remember hearing him talk to the people that injected me. The problem is like I said I only met the principal once and that was before the experiments so I vaguely remember what he looked like."
"Can't you transform yourself into him so we can see what he looks like?"
"No. I never made contact with him. I can only transform into people I have physical contact with. I had contact with the people who injected me but not the principal."
"It doesn't do much good if you can't remember what the principal looked like… nor is it helpful that the school isn't where it was when you were at it."
Sam looked defeated by Fury's words. She realized that her information wasn't much help and she feared that maybe Fury wouldn't be able to help her nor the other students.
"Sir, we need to help her," Steve said.
"Rogers… I don't know if we can help her."
"Sir, Sam could be a great asset to SHIELD, maybe even the Avengers, and if she can help us then we should be willing to help her," Steve said stating his argument to help.
Fury realized that Steve was right. With Sam's ability she could be a great asset, not to mention if they did find the school the other students could also be great assets.
"Well she can transform into some of the henchmen… that can be helpful… but are you sure there isn't anything else about the school or the principal that you remember?" Fury asked Sam.
Sam stood before the three men trying to remember anything that could be helpful. She hoped that maybe she's remember something deep within her brain that could help Fury help herself and the other students. As she was wondering through her past memories she remembered a detail from before she went to the school.
"Wait… Wait… I can't believe I forgot about this… but they gave my mother a pamphlet about the school… I think it had the photo of the principal and some of the staff."
"Seriously you forgot that," Tony said rudely.
"I'm sorry but it was 12 years ago."
"Why would anyone put photos on a pamphlet for a pretend school that they are going to use to do experiments on teenagers?" Tony said skeptically.
"I don't know… maybe this was their first attempt and they stupidly put a photo on the pamphlet," Sam said trying to make sense of the situation.
"It just doesn't make sense…"
"Tony would you just shut up. Who cares why they put a photo on the pamphlet, the more important thing is that it just might help us... Where is the pamphlet?" Steve remarked.
"I haven't seen it in years but it should be in my mom's stuff back at my house."
"The sooner we have the pamphlet the sooner we can look into your story," Fury stated.
"I'll go back home right away and get it."
"This pamphlet could be very important. You shouldn't go and get it alone… Take Rogers with you."
"Wait, shouldn't I be going with her," Tony stated.
"I don't think it will take three people to find the pamphlet," Sam remarked.
"Probably not but I think it would be best if I went with you two," Tony said feeling left out.
"Tony it shouldn't take but maybe a few days to find the pamphlet. If Steve and I don't manage to find it within that time you can come and help."
"Fine," Tony said like a child.
"When you are gone I'll assign some of my agents to look into your story. When you get back I'd like to have doctors test your ability," Fury stated.
"I know you are curious about my ability but I don't want to be tested on."
"Tests need to be done to determine if your ability is a threat to yourself or others."
"I have already had tests done by Bruce and he didn't come to the conclusion that my ability was doing me any harm."
"He might not have been looking where he needed to be. We have special doctors whose jobs are specifically for such purposes. It would be better if they tested you."
"With all due respect, Sir I trust Bruce."
"Maybe so but we might not be able to help you if we don't run some tests first," Fury said trying to show his ultimatum.
"Fury, that is not fair she came to you for help," Steve said sternly.
"For once Steve is right," Tony remarked.
Sam felt grateful that Steve and Tony had stuck up to Fury for her. However, even though they stuck up for her she had the feeling that Fury wouldn't take that into consideration with his demands for tests. He seemed like a man that gets what he wants one way or another.
"Fine. I'll do the tests."
"Sam, you don't have to do that," Tony said protectively.
"No he's right…. But I will only do the tests on one condition."
"What would that be?" Fury questioned.
"That Bruce is in charge of the testing. Your doctors can consult with him about what tests need to be done but Bruce will ultimately be in charge and he will be the one actually doing the tests."
"If Banner is willing than I will consider it."
"Consider? You'll consider her negotiations?... Sam, I told you he wouldn't be willing to help you," Tony said upset.
"I never said I wasn't willing to help… I just don't like being pushed into a corner."
"I'm sorry Sir. I wasn't trying to push you into a corner. I'd just feel safer with Bruce being my doctor."
"Safer? You do realize what he can turn into?"
"Yes, I know of Bruce's transformation ability. If you trusted him enough to make him apart of the Avengers then I don't see why you'd have a problem with him being my doctor."
Fury exhaled and shook his head. He realized that Sam was more like Tony than he expected.
"I concede. Banner will be in charge of your tests."
"Thank you."
"Now, that that is settled. You better go and search for that pamphlet."
