Chapter 10 - Betrayal
A Shot in the Dark
Chapter 10 - Betrayal
Rachel looked around the Dining Hall that had been decked out for this celebratory evening. All of the torpedoes had been completed, three modified fighter shuttles had been constructed, the transwarp beaming prototype trial was a success, and the test flight of the Vengeance had met Marcus' high standards. She took a deep breath and let it out slowly. Khan had done everything that Admiral Marcus had wanted him to complete. She wondered what plans the Admiral had made for Khan and his people. Rachel wanted to believe that the Admiral would keep his promises, but a part of her knew that he probably wouldn't let Khan go - not when he could continue to be used to create new weapons. Rachel swallowed the last sip of her water and set the glass down. She wanted to leave this place . . . but she knew she wouldn't leave as long as Khan was still under Marcus' control. She couldn't just leave him and his people. She scanned the room and found him easily - the only person in the room not smiling.
She walked over and stood beside him, "You're not looking very pleased this evening." she stated quietly.
Khan took a slow breath, "Why should I be?"
Rachel raised a curious eyebrow, "You've completed the projects for Marcus, shouldn't you be pleased?"
Khan narrowed his eyes at her, then looked away. "If you think that Marcus will fulfill his promises to me, you're more naive than I thought."
Rachel frowned, his words ruffling her tightly held composure. She spotted Marcus and headed over to him.
Alexander Marcus raised an eyebrow at Rachel as she approached him, "What do you want, Commander Reed?"
Rachel waited a moment until a few people moved away from them. She looked at Marcus carefully, "What are your plans, now that Commander Harrison has completed your projects? I think it would be beneficial if you'd let him in on where you plan on settling him and his people, because of his job well done." She watched as Admiral Marcus' eyes narrowed and he took a focused look at her.
Admiral Marcus stepped closer to her, "Surely, you of all people, know that I have no intentions of ever letting him and his people go. Look at what he was capable of doing on his own - it is unimaginable the destructive power that all of them together could yield."
Rachel shook her head slightly, "Sir, you don't understand what this is going to do to him. He will be so completely angry that he will take drastic measures to free his people. You promised him you would let them go."
Marcus felt like slapping her for her insolence, instead he stepped back. "It is your job to keep him under control. If he acts out, just remember that it's your family that will pay for your shortcomings."
Rachel felt a firm grip on her elbow and winced when she noted that Cartwright had hold of her. He kept his grip on her as they followed Marcus over to Khan.
Admiral Alexander Marcus smiled widely at Khan, "Commander Harrison, I've got good news for you." he said loud enough for the other engineers and technicians around them to hear. "Your proposal to reverse engineer more items from the Nero collection has been approved - looks like you'll be with us for awhile longer." Marcus glanced at Rachel, "Luckily, Commander Reed has volunteered to stay on as your assistant."
Rachel felt her insides start to tighten. She watched as the audience around them applauded. Her heart clenched as Khan stared at Marcus, then he finally gave Marcus a slight nod.
"Very well, Admiral. I'll go over the inventory this weekend and start working on some of the more interesting items." Khan stated evenly.
Marcus smirked, "I'm glad you're with us to stay for the long haul, Commander Harrison."
"I'm sure you are, Admiral." Khan acknowledged.
"I expect your initial report to be sent to me by Monday morning at 0900, then we'll discuss the particulars from there." Admiral Marcus stated firmly.
"Commander Reed and I will get started on the report tomorrow morning." Khan nodded.
Marcus grinned, "Good."
Rachel looked at Marcus as he turned to her.
"You'd better live up to my expectations." Marcus threatened her quietly.
She nodded slowly and watched as Marcus and Cartwright headed to another group of engineers. She felt her fists clench involuntarily at her sides to keep her hands from visibly shaking. She was afraid. Afraid for Khan and his family, and for hers - afraid that no matter what she did, she was going to fail all of them.
"Perhaps you're ready to leave?" Khan questioned.
Rachel nodded and headed out the door. She walked down the stairs to their level and went into his office. She looked around at all of the notebooks and drawings that he had so painstakingly worked on - all of it to save his people, because of a promise made by a controlling mad man. "I'm sorry. I knew he was horrible, but I never thought . . ." Rachel shook her head tiredly, a migraine increasing its vice grip around her head. "I think I'm going to turn in. I'll be able to think better tomorrow with a clear head." She left him standing there in his office.
She walked down the corridor to her quarters and stepped in slowly. She took a few slow breaths to try and steady her pounding heart. What in the world was she going to do? She sat down on the couch and took off her boots. Khan would never trust anything that Marcus said again. She knew Khan would come up with some kind of plan to free his people - the only question was how. She sighed softly and closed her eyes tiredly. Her migraine was impeding her thought processes. She needed to sleep. Tomorrow she'd be able to think clearly and figure out a way to talk to Khan privately. Perhaps she could help him in some way, maybe she could even get Doctor Soran to help. She stood up and went to her bedroom and changed into her sleep shorts and tank. She crawled under the covers and fell asleep rather quickly.

Rachel lifted her head from under the covers as she searched for her PADD on the nightstand. She picked it up and tapped the communiqué to make the incessant noise stop.
Commander Cartwright's face appeared on her screen. "Find Harrison now." he ordered.
Rachel sat up and ran a hand over her face, "What do you mean - find him? Isn't he in his quarters?"
Cartwright's face contorted, "He's looped the security feeds. It's going to take us a few minutes to disrupt his program. Go find him." He stopped before he ended the call, "Did you know he could loop the feeds?"
Rachel felt her blood turn cold, but tried to hold herself together, "I think I should go find him." She clicked off the communiqué and quickly got out of bed. She pulled on a sweatshirt and slipped into her tennis shoes and raced over to Khan's quarters first.
She checked the Medical lab, the office, and the gym. By the time she entered the Assembly room, she was fairly certain where he would be. She walked over to the door of the room that contained the cyrotubes of Khan's people. She thought back to the code she'd seen Doctor Soran use to enter the room and punched it in.
The door slid open and Rachel entered the room. Her heart stopped. The cryotubes were gone. She staggered into the room. Had Marcus already moved the cryotubes so that Khan couldn't get to them? She frowned. Had Cartwright sent her to look for Khan just to see how she'd react to the empty room? She went to the silent alarm system on the wall and pulled it. She took a deep breath and leaned over slightly to keep herself from hyper ventilating.
She stood up slowly as she heard shuffling from the next room. She walked over to the adjoining room door. The door to the room for the torpedoes. The code that Doctor Soran had sent in the message - what was it? She closed her eyes and thought back. She opened her eyes and quickly punched in the numbers and the door slid open.
Rachel stepped into the room hesitantly. Her eyes went to Khan and the bag on the table, then her eyes traveled over the torpedoes. "Where are the cryotubes?" she questioned.
"Safe." Khan snapped.
Rachel frowned slightly as realization washed over her. "In the torpedoes? You've put them in the torpedoes!" She looked at Khan slowly, "He'll just have them opened up and taken out - then who knows what he'll do to them now." Rachel shook her head as dread started to overcome her. Marcus would kill every single one of them for this.
"He can not open them - they will detonate." Khan stated firmly. "I have the upper hand now. Marcus won't destroy the torpedoes. I'll give him his precious weapons back once my people and I are safe." He walked over and grabbed her arm, "Why are you here?" he demanded an answer.
Rachel watched him carefully, "Why didn't you tell me what you were doing?" If only he would have told her what he was doing - she could have helped, could have done something!
Khan's eyes narrowed further and he tightened his grip, "Why are you here?"
She glanced away, she didn't want to tell him that Cartwright had sent her after him. "You weren't in your quarters, the office, the medical facilities, or the gym. I came looking for you. I thought that maybe you went to see them - and that's when I noticed all of the cryotubes were missing." She looked back up at Khan and shook her head slightly, "You should have told me."
Khan's head snapped up. "You pulled the alarm!" he yelled and threw her against the wall.
She would never forget the devastated look on his face when she realized what she'd done.
Rachel felt her shoulder crack as she hit the wall. She stifled her scream by biting down on her lip as she slid down the wall to the floor. She looked up as Marcus stepped in the room and locked eyes with Khan.
"So, you think you have the upper hand in this situation? You think that I care about these torpedoes so much that I won't destroy them?"
Rachel felt sick. Marcus wasn't going to let Khan go unpunished.
Marcus shrugged, "I can have more made." He tilted his head slightly as he walked over to the first torpedo and patted it, "Perhaps, I'll just have them used for their original purpose - kill two birds with one stone?"
She watched as Khan's fists clenched at his sides. Marcus didn't understand that he couldn't make these types of threats to Khan's people. The only thing that had kept Khan in check was the promise of safety for his people.
Marcus smiled devilishly, "Thank you for wrapping up this little conundrum I had on what to do with the evidence of your people's existence."
Rachel swallowed as she could see the tension coil in Khan. She had never seen him so furious.
"If you do not get back downstairs right now and continue to obey my orders, I will make sure all of these torpedoes are destroyed and you will never have the chance to gaze upon your fellow Augments again." Marcus threatened Khan.
Rachel closed her eyes tightly and hoped with all of her heart that Khan would just stand down for now. She could try to reason with Marcus.
"If you destroy my people - you will not be able to stop my wrath. Guarantee me that you will not harm them." Khan demanded.
Marcus laughed, "Take them out of my torpedoes and we'll talk - maybe this little fiasco will only cost half of them."
Rachel's eyes snapped open. She watched as Khan put his hands on the table and took a deep breath. In the blink of an eye,Khan had grabbed the bag from the table and bolted through the huge service elevator shaft door.
She stood up slowly as Marcus bellowed orders for security to seal off the building and capture the fugitive. "Admiral, you can get him to come back if you just guarantee the safety of his people."
Marcus was pacing between two rows of cryotubes. He stopped and looked up at her, like he just noticed she was there. He walked over to her slowly, "Yes, I could do that." He frowned slightly, "Are you okay?" he asked quietly.
"My shoulder is injured." she admitted. She shook her head slightly, "Admiral, you shouldn't have threatened his people like that."
Marcus nodded, "What's done is done." He looked behind her as the adjoining room door opened and Commander Cartwright came in.
Cartwright nodded to Marcus, "She had the code to the outer door and this one." he reported.
Rachel stepped back and hit the table, "I'd seen the code punched in before - I have a good memory." she quickly gave them a reason for her knowing the codes that she was not suppose to know.
Marcus looked over Rachel and shook his head in disgust, "You helped him. This whole time you've been helping him."
Rachel shook her head, "No - no, I didn't. I haven't been helping him." she reiterated. She could feel her chest start to tighten again.
Marcus looked at Cartwright, "You can interrogate her."
Rachel's eyes widened and her breath hitched in her side. She felt her throat start to close and her heart start to hammer in her chest.
Cartwright grabbed her arm and smiled, "Come with me, Commander."

The End.
So, there you have it - Rachel's point of view of what happened. I thought about writing what Rachel went through during her interrogation, but since it is already mentioned in "Broken Remnants" - I don't think there's any need for me to stretch it out in this story.
Thank you to everyone that has been reading this story, I hope you've enjoyed it. If you haven't read it already, Khan and Rachel's story continues in "Broken Remnants", which picks up towards the end of the movie Star Trek: Into Darkness.
As always, reviews are greatly appreciated!
