Chapter 10
"And this is the best thing that could have happened,
Any longer and I wouldn't have made it"
- Ignorance, Paramore
Late at night, there comes a knock at the door.
Tiredly, Annabeth looks up. "Come in," she calls.
Piper slides in, wearing a wry smile on her face. She's got dark circles under her eyes, and her hair is lank and greasy. Annabeth knows she probably doesn't look any better. The girls have been working tirelessly to catch Percy – and Annabeth has just been sitting in her own guilt, hobbled by grief and pain and confusion. She still doesn't know if she did the right thing.
"Hey," Annabeth says.
"Hey," Piper says. "How're things coming?"
"Not well."
"Yeah, me too." Piper collapses in the chair on the other side of the desk, hiding her face in her arms, and groans. "God, I need a nap."
"You can take a quick kip here if you need. I've got blankets under the desk."
"Some other time." Piper sits up and arches, sighing when her back cracks. Annabeth pulls a face, and when Piper notices she grins. "I've been sitting at a desk trawling over security footage for hours," she explains. "I've been needing to get that out my system for a while."
"Nice to know."
There's a small pause. Piper's face is suddenly twisted in hesitancy. Annabeth frowns at the change in mood. "Hey, are you all right?" she asks, concerned.
Piper's expression is conflicted. For a few moments, she's quiet, and then she blurts, "You– you wouldn't lie to us, would you?"
Annabeth's heart skips a beat. "Depends," she says. Her throat is dry.
"On what?"
"Your safety."
Piper swallows. "Can you be honest for me for just a few moments?" she says. "Like, completely, entirely honest?"
"Of course."
Piper takes a deep breath, and then stares her dead in the eyes. "Did you help Percy escape?"
And Annabeth's heart stops.
She stares at Piper, winded, feeling like the breath has just been kicked out from under her ribs. Piper looks so confused, and pained, like she'd known the answer but hoped it otherwise, and there's something in her expression that just breaks Annabeth. Because she's seen Piper miserable before. She's seen her confused and angry and sad. But she's never seen her look betrayed, not like this. Not to her.
The word burns as it come up. "H–how...?"
Piper shifts, her smile pained. "I couldn't stop obsessing over it, Beth," she says softly. "This is our home. He was meant to be the thing that kept us safe, and he escaped. If he could get out, they could get in, and– I couldn't deal with it. Everyone just chalked it down to someone being lazy with security, but– there was something else, Annabeth. It didn't seem right. I mean, the key to those cuffs was in a locked drawer across the room. There is physically no way he could have got them by himself. I watched over the security footage almost religiously. There had to have been inside help. But I couldn't find anything."
She smiles. Her eyes are exhausted. "But then," she says, "the day before, there was eight minutes where the footage cut out. We sent back-up almost immediately, but we were halfway across the building. That means for roughly three minutes there is no record of what happened in that room. And you were there."
"I couldn't do it anymore," Annabeth says. "Piper, you don't get it. I couldn't."
"And I get that," Piper says, "but you're our leader, Beth."
Annabeth's mouth is bone-dry. She just stares desperately at her friend. "Piper—"
"I have to report you," Piper says hopelessly. "I have to."
"I made a mistake."
"No," Piper says. "You didn't. If you did, I wouldn't report you. But I know if you had the chance to do it over, you wouldn't change a thing."
"Piper, please—"
Piper stands up. Her hands are shaking, and her jaw is tight. "I don't even know if I can trust you anymore!" she cries. "Annabeth– God, you're my best friend, why would you do this?"
"You have to understand," Annabeth says. She stands up too. The entire world is spinning too fast, shifting beneath her feet, and for the first time she feels like she's not moving with it. "Piper, you don't get it, he was dying—"
"I don't care!" Piper shouts, and Annabeth the words die in her mouth. "He was our captive. You're not dumb. This is what happens. They begin to die. This isn't new to you!"
"Piper—"
"You have run this place for years, Annabeth. And you're not stupid, I know that you know some people aren't too pleased with the way you do it. You want to know the reason it's all kept together, though? You want to know the reason why they don't revolt and overthrow you? Because maybe you're not the most diplomatic and maybe you're not the most thoughtful but we know that no matter what you'd lay your life down for this place. You would throw yourself in top of a bomb for any one of us, from me down to some stupid initiate. That's what's kept this together. Because we trust you." Piper makes a choked noise, and Annabeth suddenly feels her eyes burn with tears. "But– I don't know anymore."
"You can trust me. Piper, I'm still the same person."
"No, you're not. The Annabeth I know wouldn't do something this stupid for some dumb crush."
Annabeth flinches. "You know nothing—"
"Don't I?" Piper challenges. "I'm not stupid. Percy's always had a soft spot for you, and even though you wouldn't admit it I just knew you did too. You spent twice the amount of time up there we would. And at the beginning, that was fine, because so what if he gets attached, it'll make things worse for him in the end, and also you were still going through with regular procedures. I thought you'd be able to keep it under control. You're allowed to have dumb crushes. We all get them. And I'm not blind, I'm aware that boy was good-looking. But you – you took it one step further, because then you started believing you could actually make it work."
Annabeth begins to see red. "Piper," she says, barely concealing her rage. "You need to shut. Up."
"Or what, Chase?" Piper shouts. "You'll punish me? I'm just telling you the truth!"
"You don't know anything!"
"You fell in love with that kid and you started entertaining the idea of actually having a relationship with him, and then, like the selfish bitch you are, you happily put the welfare and safety of your entire family behind you just so you could have five minutes with him."
"Piper—"
"You said it yourself!" Piper says. "About when you thought we had a rat? Minerva is built on trust. It works because we trust each other." She shakes her head. "And I don't know if I can trust you anymore."
Out of everything, that hurts the most. And Annabeth knows it's because it's true.
Piper's eyes are upset. "You have to understand," she says, her voice softer. "I have to report you."
"I know."
And Annabeth does. This was the price she was willing to pay.
"I'm sorry, Beth," Piper says.
"I'm not."
Piper nods. "I know."
She leaves.
Percy's freedom for the trust of her girls. Annabeth still isn't sure if it was worth it.
Things change.
She's still leader, but she knows it won't be for long. It wouldn't matter, anyway. News travels fast. By lunchtime the next day, everyone knows. Everywhere she goes, she gets stared at. She could be the Queen of England for all anyone cares – all her respect is gone. The canteen falls silent when she walks in, and when she glances out of the corner of her eye Piper and Rachel have propped their coats in the seat she normally sits in.
Petty? Probably. It's all very high-school. But she eats in her office nonetheless.
She still doesn't know how to feel.
She had gone to bed the night Piper had confronted her plagued. She was so conflicted, still is. She had to keep telling herself that she had done the right thing because if she didn't then she knows she would go mad with regret. And sometimes, it's easy to believe it. All she has to do is picture Percy's face, distant, pale, terrified, because you can't let someone die like that. At that rate, his mind would have died before his body, and human psyche is a treacherous thing – it wouldn't have happened for months. Annabeth wouldn't wish that on her worst enemies. She had to do it.
But sometimes, it's hard to remember why.
She spends the next night curled up in bed, wide awake. Piper is in the cot next to her.
"Piper," she whispers. "Are you awake?"
Piper doesn't respond, but Annabeth knows she is.
"I–" Annabeth cuts herself off and blinks rapidly. Damn. "I'm really sorry, Piper."
"No you're not."
It's quiet but defiant. When Annabeth rolls her head to the side, Piper is staring defiantly at the ceiling.
"Not for Percy," Annabeth says.
Piper stays quiet.
Annabeth sucks in a shaky breath. "I know I'm going to get replaced," she says. "And, um. I want you take my place."
Annabeth can almost feel Piper's surprise across the room. "What?"
"You're my best friend," Annabeth says softly. "And there's no one I trust more."
Piper inhales sharply. "Annabeth—"
"Goodnight, Piper."
There's a pause.
"Night, Beth."
When she walks into the morning brief the next day, the mood drops the second she enters. Before, they were all merrily chatting, sipping their coffee, still wiping sleep out of their eyes, and then as soon as they hear her come in they all fall silent. It hurts, Annabeth will admit, but even she knows that's not fair for her to say. Instead, she sets her shoulders back and her chin high.
She walks to the front of the room to the podium, and she pretends not to feel their stares on her. In a few days, it won't be her up here. It'll be for the best, but she doesn't know where she's going to land once she gets replaced. The leader picks the top girls. And normally they'd all just keep the same girls, because they're all friends and they all work and also picking out new girls would be such a pain, but they have every right to completely kick her out.
It's a terrifying thought. She grips the podium hard.
For a few moments, there is just silence.
And then she uncomfortably clears her throat. "Right," she says. "Let's talk about the plan for today."
"Yes, let's do that," Drew says from the back of the room. Everyone turns to look at her. She has her feet propped up on the table, and she's absently filing her nails, but her eyes are sharp. "Unless you have any more captives to set free and any more friends you want to betray, in which case you should probably empty your planners, ladies, because clearly that now has priority."
Annabeth struggles to keep her temper. "Really not the time, Drew."
"Oh, isn't it?" Drew takes her legs off the table and leans forward. "Then when is? You gonna make us another timetable so we know when to show up for your seminars on what the hell was going through your head? Because you know what, for the first time I might actually be glad about that, because I really, really want to know."
"Drew," Piper says warily.
But Annabeth's had it. She's been stared at enough by every single person she's passed today. She leans forward on the podium, bracing her elbows against it, and says, "You want to think about how there was maybe a reason?"
"Other than you being deluded and conning yourself into believing you and Percy would actually have a chance together? No, my mind never crossed that."
"Yeah, Annabeth," Lacey says. "What reason would be good enough to betray us all like that?"
"We're not having this conversation now."
"No, let's do it," Rachel says, and Annabeth holds her stare. "Please, enlighten us."
Annabeth's jaw ticks.
The entire room is looking at her. She sets her shoulders. Go down spectacular, she tells herself. She's going to get thrown out any day. She may as well do it fighting. "My mother started Minerva to be a second chance," she says. "The reason we're all here is because we needed it, because nowhere else would take us. That's what Minerva's always been about. It has never, ever been killing and torturing people. Not like that. Percy was dying, and all we were do was delaying the inevitable to make it as bad as possible. The only reason we've become what we've become is because that second chance has hardened us. It's taught us to be wary about who we trust, and people respect that. And now we've caught ourselves up in this whole mess with Olympus. We're not fighters. We never have been. It's about defending our home. But somewhere that line got blurred. My mom did not start this place for us to do that."
"You betrayed us." That's Piper. Her voice is barely above a whisper. "You lied to us."
"Because I knew this would happen."
Drew snorts. "What? Us not trusting you? Gee, I wonder why."
"I'm not sorry for what I did," Annabeth says. "I don't care if you think it was the wrong decision. I'm not sorry, and I'd do it again."
Piper's eyes flicker. She can't meet her eyes. "You condemned Silena for doing exactly what you are," she says softly.
Annabeth feels like she's punched in the gut. "This is not the same thing," she says harshly.
Piper turns to the rest of the room. There's a tightness to her jaw that Annabeth has never seen before, and when one of the lights catches her eyes, Annabeth notices the sheen of tears. Oh, God. Annabeth feels her own throat burn.
"Everyone in favour of Annabeth stepping down," Piper says quietly, "raise your hand."
There's a beat. And the entire room raises their hands.
Annabeth was expecting it, but it still hurts.
"Who'll be appointed in her place?" Rachel asks.
Piper squares her shoulders. "Me."
Something takes flight in Annabeth's chest.
Drew snorts. "And what makes you think we'll be okay with that, McLean?"
"I'm her second-in-command," Piper says. "I've been here longer than all of you, and frankly I believe I'm the best for the job."
"Yeah, well, I disagree," Drew says.
"And I don't care," Piper says. "Who else would it be, Drew? You?"
Drew flinches, and then raises her chin. "Maybe," she says.
"Oh, pull the other one, Tanaka," Rachel says. "You're a sociopath with glittery eyeliner. You'd be terrible."
"So would you!"
"Yeah, but I don't want to be leader, do I?"
Drew huffs.
"You are not becoming leader," Annabeth says.
Rachel turns to her. "No offence, Chase," she says, "but your opinion right now is super unnecessary."
"I'm still the leader," Annabeth says. "At least for now. And I want it to be Piper."
"Even more reason why it shouldn't be Piper," Drew says
Annabeth fixes her with a cold stare. "I have been the leader of this place for six years," she says. "I know how it works better than anyone in this room. And yeah, okay, you all don't trust me right now, that's fair. But I am not going to let your prejudice be the reason Minerva goes under. Piper is the best chance we have at beating Olympus and anyone who thinks otherwise is wrong. And you know what, Drew, I really don't appreciate your attitude right now, so if you'd shut that painted gaping hole you call a mouth for just two seconds that would be great, because simply hearing the sound of your voice is causing me physical pain."
Drew's eyes flash, and she stands. "You have no right—"
"To do what, Tanaka?" Annabeth demands. "Speak to you like that? Like the way you've been speaking to me for years? I have put up with you for so long and I'm sick and tired of you. You are insolent and rude and you haven't shown me one bit of respect ever, and like hell I'm going to put you in charge. You may hate me but Athena is still my mother and as her only living bloodline and leader of this place for the next ten minutes I get the say on what goes on and you are not touching that position if it kills me."
Drew stands there in silence, her body quivering. Just when Annabeth is sure she's going to launch herself feet-first at her face, she drops down back into her seat. "Fine," she spits. "I liked Piper better than you anyway."
"Thanks?" Piper says.
"But what happens to Annabeth?" Lacey says, and everyone turns to look at her. "She can't stay here."
"You mean here as in the brief room or here as in Minerva?" Rachel asks.
"I don't know. Both? She betrayed us. She let Percy go. We can't let go unpunished – and we're not just going to put her in isolation for two hours."
"When Silena snaked she got kicked out," says Miranda.
"But Annabeth didn't snake," Piper says. "She set Percy free, sure, but she didn't leak any information."
"She might as well," Rachel says grimly. "Once Percy gets back to Olympus he's going to tell them everything. He probably knows where we are. She may as well have just sent them our location."
"That's if our squad teams don't catch him first," Piper says.
"Who are we kidding, Piper? They're not going to. It's been two days. If they haven't found him now, they never will. He's probably already made it to Olympus by now. For all we know they already know everything."
Piper begins to look a little worried. "We can't kick her out," she says. "We can't."
"She did it to Silena," Drew says.
Piper gnaws her thumbnail.
Rachel turns to Annabeth. "Would you mind leaving us?" she says.
It smacks her in the face. But she can't be surprised. The minute she kissed Percy she had been resigning herself to this.
This is your fault. Your decision. And you'd do it again.
Annabeth just nods.
She heads straight for the boxing ring.
Smack. Smack. Smack.
"Hey."
Annabeth looks up from the punchbag, out of breath. It's Leo. He's standing slightly awkwardly, in a pair of grease-stained overalls and a fuzzy, slightly matted jumper that looks like it belongs to Piper. His hands are shoved in his pockets.
Annabeth nods slightly at him, and then goes back to the bag. "Hey."
They're in silence for a bit, the sound of her bare fists hitting the bag the only noise.
"You're not wearing gloves," Leo says quietly. "You could hurt yourself."
"I really don't care."
Leo sits on the railing next to her. Annabeth keeps hitting.
"Did Piper send you?" she manages, between blows.
"No." There's a pause. "I didn't see you at lunch."
"I didn't feel like it."
"I didn't peg you as the kind of girl who lets a ruined rep wound her pride."
"Yeah, well," Annabeth mutters. Smack. "Today's different."
"I get that."
They're quiet for a bit.
"I wanted to say thank you," Leo says.
Annabeth stops and turns to him. "For what?"
"For saving Percy."
Annabeth snorts and turns back to the bag. "You're the only one who considers it 'saving'."
Smack. Smack.
"Percy's my friend," Leo says simply. "You saved his life."
"No one else sees it that way."
"Does it matter?"
"Does it matter that everyone hates and doesn't trust me?" Smack. "Yeah, a bit."
Leo watches her. "They'll get over it."
"No they won't." Annabeth sighs. "I saved his life. But I betrayed everyone. I'm surprised they haven't kicked me out."
"I heard them talking about that," Leo says quietly. Annabeth turns to look at him. He's staring down at his boots, his feet turned inward. "In the brief room. I walked past. They were discussing whether or not to let you stay."
"Yeah, I know. Got booted out of that one."
"They didn't eager to let you go."
She hits the bag particularly hard, and she thinks a knuckle pops. She keeps going. "I'm not so sure about that."
"They love you, Annabeth," Leo says. "You did the right thing."
Annabeth's throat suddenly feels tight. "But I'm not even sure," she says, her voice pathetically thick. "I– I thought I did. But I just– after everything that's happened, I don't even know if it was worth it."
"What do you mean?"
"I'll never see Percy again. And if I do, it won't be under friendly circumstances. We'll be fighting against each other. I live with these girls, and – they're my family. I put my family on the line for a boy I'll never see again."
"You put your family on the line to save a life," Leo says firmly.
"He knows our location," Annabeth says. "It's over, anyway. I screwed everything up."
There's a pause.
"Can I tell you a secret?" Leo says.
"What?"
"I've known your location for months."
"What? How?"
"I'm working in all three sectors, I hear a lot of conversations. I get to sit in the meetings because they think since I know my way around a motorbike I can make, like, electric swords."
Annabeth can't help her small smile. "Light-sabers? Really?"
"Yeah, basically. I felt so cool I didn't really ever correct them. I mean. Only about seven people ever got to hear those meetings. And I was one of them. I was like the fly on the wall. You don't suspect much out of a mechanic. But when you sit in meetings like that, where they discuss battle tactics and how they plan on taking you down from the inside – you hear a lot. And I had a lot of friends." He manages a weak smile. "When you're the least attractive one of the friend group you learn to develop a great personality."
"Percy's also got a great personality."
"So does Jason, it's awful, it's like they can't give me that one thing. Anyway. Basically, I had a lot of enablers. I knew where the squads would travel, I knew where they assign the runs, I knew vague estimations of where they thought you were. I broke into a library and got maps on where all the electricity lines run. I marked down each and every place we checked."
"So, process of elimination."
Leo huffs out a laugh. "Give yourself more credit. It was harder than that."
"How?"
"You guys disguise yourself good. I didn't even realise my bike had stopped in front of Minerva until I saw you and Piper with your guns. I pulled in front of the building because it looked like an abandoned lot and if I couldn't get my bike working by sunset I could sleep in there. When you guys came out I nearly passed out. It was like finding Narnia. I was like, damn, I've actually done it."
Annabeth looks at him. "You must have had some inkling."
"Yeah. I narrowed it down to a couple of blocks. The building had to have been there."
"Why did you never tell anyone?"
Leo sighs. "Hero complex, I guess. When Percy got taken, we just knew it had been you guys. And Poseidon was going out of his mind with worry."
Annabeth frowns. "Poseidon? Why?"
A flash of panic crosses Leo's face. "Uh. No reason. Percy's a good fighter. It doesn't matter. Anyway. I thought that maybe I could rescue him on my own. Show up like a hero with him. Get acclaim, praise, recognition. You said it yourself. I wanted to be more than just the mechanic. I wanted to do it by myself. I wanted all the glory, I guess. I thought I could do it, to be honest. I'm small and unintimidating, and I knew you guys had good Tartarus connections. I thought I could have pretended to be a local who just happened to wander in."
"That wouldn't have worked."
"Probably not. It's the thought that counts." Leo turns his feet in further, pulling at his laces. "Percy knows where you are now. And yeah, when he gets to Olympus, he's probably going to tell them. And– I know that there seems like there's no upside to this for us."
The 'us' makes Annabeth's heart warm. "You could say that."
"But still." Leo smiles up awkwardly at her. "You– you saved his life. That– I can never thank you enough for that."
Annabeth watches him. "You guys are really close."
"He's my best bud. He and Jason both. We've known each other since we were kids. He's– he's got a good heart. A really good heart. Anyone else, and I would have called you crazy for letting them go. Literally anyone else. Even Thalia, and I'm sort of disgustingly in love with her even though I'm, like, eighty percent sure she's a lesbian. She's hot but damn, she's terrifying. And you can only get turned down enough times for it to start hurting your ego. But Percy– he's different, you know?"
"Yeah. I know."
"You're a good person, Annabeth," Leo says.
"But that doesn't matter. I failed them as a leader."
"You're a great leader."
Annabeth snorts. "Now you're talking crap."
"I'm serious."
"Where were you during the whole I-literally-just-betrayed-everyone shebang? Do I need to remind you how badly I screwed up?"
"It takes a lot of courage to do the right thing," Leo says.
Annabeth turns back to the bag. "Doesn't feel like courage to me," she mutters. Smack. Smack.
"Annabeth," Leo says, and there's something about his voice that makes her sigh and turn back to him. Sitting on the rail in Piper's jumper, he's never looked so unthreatening – but there's power in his stance. He was never a fighter, but he is smart. "I get that you feel like you failed everyone, okay? I literally always feel like that. I'm a mechanic. I blow things up on the regular. Do you know how demeaning it is to have something literally explode in your face when you've spent countless hours and also money trying to get it work? I'll give you a hint, it's very. And from, like, a war advisor point of view, yeah, you kind of screwed up, it's like the first rule; utilise your captives, or whatever. But–from a human point of view? You did the right thing."
Annabeth watches him.
"You were prepared to literally sacrifice the trust of your family to save his life, even though you knew it literally wouldn't influence you in the slightest. That's selfless, and that's a good leader. They don't realise it now, but they will."
Annabeth sighs. "I just– I don't like feeling like I've failed them."
"You haven't." She must still look unconvinced, because he says, "Do you want to know what the difference between Minerva and Olympus is?"
"Olympus are bigger and stronger and more powerful and their leaders are jackasses?"
"Your girls in the brief room may argue with you on that last one, and yeah, I guess, but I was actually thinking Olympus are sadistic bastards."
"And we're not? Leo, did you see Percy?"
"You wouldn't let me."
"Oh, right. Well. He was bad, okay. If you looked at him you wouldn't think kindred spirits."
"That's not what I'm getting at here," Leo says. He raises his finger. "First rule of war – know your opponent."
"I thought it was utilise you captives."
"I'm trying to be deep, Annabeth."
"Sorry."
"Anyway. A rule of war – know your opponent. And for a while, you guys were my opponents, so I did a bunch of research on you. And I know Minerva didn't originally start as an international drug-and-weaponry trade. You did it to rehabilitate suffering girls, didn't you?"
Annabeth doesn't respond.
"That's how everyone came here. Half the girls here were prostitutes. Others were addicted to coke. Others like setting fire to things."
"I think that's just you."
"You'd be surprised. Anyway. The only reason you guys started this was because you found it a sustainable profit and you'd have people approaching you for ages about doing some slightly less-than-legal things because of how secure you were. Your lives have all sucked, so you don't trust anyone. That's what makes you so reliable."
"Why are you telling me this?"
"Because you want to know why Olympus started? Because three brothers decided that the best way to earn money was through fear. They started out evil, okay. You– progressed there. And you're not even that evil. I mean, Drew is, and so is the vending machine in the canteen, because I'm pretty sure it's possessed, but that doesn't matter. What matters is that Olympus have always, always been about fear and devastation and strife if it meant earning money. You guys started because you cared about people. And that's what you've done now."
"But I let everyone down."
"In terms of the war? Yeah, you did. But not if you look about Minerva's what really about."
Annabeth snorts. "If you look at what Minerva was really about, Percy never would have been in that position in the first place."
"Maybe not." Leo watches her. "You're not a bad person, Annabeth. Stop beating yourself up."
"I'm basically Silena. I sent her out to die for this. I just– who even am I?"
"I don't know," Leo says. "That's for you to figure out." He swings himself off the railing and makes a move towards the exit. "Check out your knuckles, by the way. I think you've dislocated a few of them."
Annabeth looks down at her hands. Her knuckles are red and swollen, and she vaguely registers the pain.
She looks up at his retreating back.
"Leo?" she calls.
He turns around.
"Thank you," she says.
He grins at her. "No problem, Sergeant Chase."
It's probably the last time she'll get called that. Oddly enough, she finds she doesn't mind.
