"Goodnight, Pierre. Get some sleep, I'll lock up." Max said to the bartender as he held the door to the casino open for him." Pierre, left and Max shut the door, locked it and turned to do a walk through of the game floor. As he was approaching the roulette table Max reached into his breast pocket and took out a cigarette and a lighter. As he went to light his cigarette he fumbled with the lighter and it fell to the ground. Max bent down to pick it up and while he was down on the ground his eye caught something underneath the table. He stood up and then noticed that it appeared part of the table could come off. Max giggled it off turned it over, revealing an electronic control.
"He's a cheat!" Max exclaimed to himself. "99's engaged to a cheat!" Max thought back to the conversation he had with the waiter outside Victor's suite. "And in more way than one! I have to let her know." He said, smiling to himself. Here it was, here's what he needed to expose Victor as a crumby person and win his 99 back. Max quickly put the roulette table together and headed up the grand staircase to look for 99. Max went to Victors suite and knocked on the door. After a few seconds 99 opened it.
"Max."
"99 you need to come with me."
"What? Why?"
"I have to show you something! Victor is not a good man and I can prove it! I had a bad feeling about him since I've met him and I have proof! You need to come with me!" He said, reaching for her hand.
"Max, why does it matter to you if Victor is a bad man?"
"Because I can't let you marry someone who isn't good enough for you, 99. Now come on!" He said pulling her behind him.
"Max, slow down!" Max led her down onto the casino floor. Just as he was going to show her the roulette table he herd Victor and Louis' voice coming from down the hall. Not wanting to be exposed, or caught with Victor's fiancee again Max pulled 99 into Victors office shut and locked the door. "Max, what are you doing?!" 99 exclaimed. Not only was he acting strangely, even for Max, but she would never be able to explain this if Victor happened to try and come to his office.
"99 Victor is a cheat!"
"How do you know this, Max?"
"The roulette table is rigged! There's an electronic device on it that the dealer can control to prevent people from winning. Now, I'm not exactly sure how it works but I saw it. I dropped my lighter and when I bent down to get it I saw it!"
99 shook her head, "I don't believe you, I just don't believe you."
"I'm telling you 99, your fiance is a cheat. First of all the roulette table is rigged," Max said pounding his fist on the desk for emphasis, "and secondly I'm assuming the dice are loaded. Third the slot machines are fixed, I know, I won from using the payphone. And Fourth, he's-" He started as he went to pound on the desk one last time. As his hand went down he accidentally hit a button. A soft hum filled the room and the picture hanging on the wall behind them started moving up. Max turned to look at it and his eyes bulged, "-a KAOS agent?!" 99 looked at Max with a surprised look on her face. It was damage control time. Max was never supposed to know about Victor being an agent. Not until after the assignment at least.
"Max, I don't understand. It's like a bad dream." She said dramatically, hoping Max would buy her shock.
"Well, to tell you the truth I'm a little surprised myself, 99." Max agreed shaking his head. "I knew he was a liar and a cheat, but a spy?"
"But Max, how could I be so blind?"
"Just be glad we found out in time, 99. You almost made a terrible mistake! Could you imagine a Control agent and a KAOS agent? Who'd accept a mixed marriage like that?" He joked. In all honesty, Max had never felt more relieved and happy in his life. He knew 99 could never marry a KAOS agent, no matter how badly she wanted a new life. Her morals would never let her do it. That means he has another chance. One last chance to be the man he always wanted to be for her.
"Well what are we going to do now, Max?" 99 asked. 99 had never been more thankful for Max's clumsy habits than she was in this moment. Not had he only inadvertently solved her case for her by finding how Victor's casino was funded but he also gave her a way to break off her engagement without much questioning from him. After this, she may not even have to tell him it was merely a case.
"Well first off we need to phone Chief and tell him all about this place and then we do the only thing we can do. We break off the engagement and give him back his ring!"
"I know you're right, Max but it's so hard for me to believe." Max sat on the desk and took his shoe off. He removed the bottom and dialed Chief's number. It rang four times before going to automated answering machine. "Chief, Max. I need you to call me on my shoe phone immediately." Max hung up and looked at 99 while putting his shoe back on. "We should probably get out of here, 99. It's not safe."
"How am I supposed to explain this to Victor?" 99 asked.
"I don't care. You don't need to explain anything to him, 99." Max grabbed her hand. "We need to get out of here." He reiterated. Max led her out of Victor's officer and to the front door of the casino. As they approached the door a large gate fell from the ceiling, blocking the exit.
"Max, we're trapped!" 99 exclaimed a panic coursing through her veins.
"Not yet, 99. Come on, the back door." The couple turned and started running towards the back door and as they approached another gate fell blocking it. Victor and Louis entered the game floor from down the hall, Louis with a gun aimed at them. "Max!" 99 said, grabbing onto his arm.
Victor pulled out a gun of his own and trained it on Max. "So," He started, "you found out me secret Monsieur..."
"Smart." Max finished proudly. Maxwell Smart. Agent 86 of Control." Max produced his own handgun. "Don't be hasty Mr. Royale. At this range neither one of us could miss."
"Oh, but this is getting us nowhere Mr. Smart." Victor admitted. "Surely two civilized men could sort out our differences without using firearms."
Max looked at him skeptically. "Ok, how about a nice quiet little session of karate?" Victor proposed one hand of poker, five card showdown. Winner kills the loser.
