An: This story has been wonderful to write, but sadly, everything comes to an end some day. Thank you to all who followed, liked and reviewed this piece of fanfiction, even though I've been away a lot and yeah. Hope you enjoy this last chapter as well :D
Disclaimer: I do not own Hobbit
I lift up my head to smirk at Fili. It's late so we need to be quiet, and it's pretty dark in our room as well, but it doesn't bother me. I don't know about Fili, though, but at least the grin on his lips tells me that it doesn't.
It's been a long week. Mom has been tense and annoyed all the time, but I understand her, because as Fili told me, the storm has made some big damages outside that cost her a lot of money that could have been spent on needed things like warmer clothes and firewood. That is also the reason Fili has been out a lot - he has been fixing the broken stuff with mom and uncle Thorin.
But now it's late and everyone is sleeping except the two of us. I've been training my ankle at nights with Fili, just to be safe - if I happen to fall or hurt it, he is able to help me. If I'm alone in my room and I fall, it would be a bit harder task to get back to my bed. And honestly? He is so supportive and happy when I achieve something that I actually enjoy being with him when I do these things. Not that I do much. I only stand up and allow some weight on my hurt ankle, slowly but steadily.
And today I will try taking an actual step.
I'm standing next to my bed with my hurt ankle up in the air. My balance is usually good but I still keep my other hand on the wall, just in case. I have never been this excited, but so unsure at the same time. What if my ankle just gives up under my weight and all this struggle has been for nothing? Sometimes, when I stood up and gave it some weight, a stab of pain would send me sitting down again. That hasn't happened for a few days anymore, but it still scares me.
"Kili, you have stood there for five minutes already", Fili comments with a short laugh. "I understand if you don't want to do it."
"No, I want to", I reply with a sigh and a grin. "I just don't want to fail this."
"You won't!" my older brother answers and crosses his arms. "You've done so well this past week that I highly doubt you'll have any difficulties at all. Really."
I smile at him. "Thanks."
After a minute of gathering some strength I finally do it. It's scary and the ankle feels really weird as I step on it, but it doesn't give up underneath me or hurt. And the feeling that comes rushing over me like a wave after this small step is overwhelming - I did it! I can't believe it, I really did it without falling or hurting myself or anything. I just took a step!
Fili is smiling too. "Kili!" he says a bit too loudly, and immediately slaps his hands over his mouth, starting to giggle a little. "Oops."
"Did you see that?" I ask him, feeling like jumping - which, I know, is a thing I cannot yet do. "Did you? I did it, Fili!"
"Yeah", he laughs. I feel like he is laughing because of my childlike excitement but I couldn't care less. I did it, I took a step, and finally I could actually do something useful. Thank Mahal for that.
"Could you get the hammer for me?" uncle Thorin asks and glances at me. I'm sitting in the snow near him, just enjoying the sun. It doesn't warm, but it feels nice to breathe in some fresh air and feel the cool air on my face.
"Sure. It's in the kitchen, right?"
"Yes, in the lowest drawer."
I get up from the snow and start to walk towards our house, the thick snow making moving slower but not impossible. It has been five days since I took my first step and walking isn't that hard anymore, nor does it feel weird. My ankle does get sore easily and I still can't walk for long periods of time without having to rest it, but I manage. And it's only getting better by each day.
The air in the kitchen is warm and the smell of food is really appealing - now when I'm also out helping uncle, mom can stay inside and prepare a good meal. Fili is on his way to the village now, but as the weather couldn't be better, nobody is even worried of his well-being (he told me that he hadn't been allowed to go to the village alone after what happened to me, but uncle had gone with him if it had been his turn).
"Did my brother send you inside already?" mom asks as she notices me, raising her eyebrows. I think we'll eat some kind of meat today, just by the delicious smell.
I shake my head. "I just came to get a hammer to him."
"It's in the bottom drawer there", mom guides me, and I smirk, kneeling on to the floor next to the white drawer. I open it, finding lots of things inside, including letter paper, pens, ink, the hammer uncle needs and gloves. I grab the hammer and get up, noticing that mom eyes me.
"What?" I ask with a grin. She lets out a short laugh and shakes her head, turning back to the food.
"I am just relieved that you are fine, that's all. But you really need to start to eat more, you are too skinny."
I laugh as I walk back outside.
Fili returns when it's already dark. As soon as he gets his boots off, there is already a plate full of food on the table and a mug of milk next to it, and mom orders him to eat. He doesn't seem to mind as he sits down and attacks the food.
Uncle Thorin sits down next to him and they start talking in a low voice about what they'll need to get the barn fixed. Me and uncle did what we could with what we had at home, but we are missing a little bit wood and nails. He says that they should be able to get them from the nearest town and something like that, I don't pay them so much attention. I'm laying on the couch next to the fireplace and just enjoy the warmth.
Few hours later mom tells us that she is off to bed and me and Fili should get some sleep too, and honestly, I think it's a good idea. I haven't moved this much in a month or something, and I can feel my muscles wanting some rest.
We climb to our room and get to our beds, and somehow I can't resist the temptation to mention how much I walked today.
"That's great, Kili", Fili mutters, half asleep already. "Does your ankle hurt anymore?"
"No, it does not. It only gets sore after a while walking around."
"Good.. Oh, do you remember the little girl who gave you her doll?"
I smirk. The doll is next to me as we speak, I realize, and turn to look at it. "I do remember. What about her?"
"She asked about you. I think she has a little crush on you or something", Fili tells me with a laughter and turns so he can see me better. "She asked if you were okay already and when you would go there again. She also told me to tell you hi from her."
I can't help but laugh. "I need to go there when I'm better and return the doll myself", I say. I remember seeing the little girl once or twice, but I never spoke to her. Anyhow, that is actually cute.
"We could go there next week", Fili suggests. "I doubt mom will ever let you go there alone again, but we could both go."
"We should", I chuckle.
Silence falls on us for a little moment, as I only stare at the ceiling and think about things. "Goodnight", I finally say and turn to lie on my stomach. I need some sleep, since tomorrow I'll have to help fix the barn again. I need to gather some strength for that.
