A.N.- I love being able to update so often! (But that probably means something is gonna happen and I won't update for a while. For example…. I'M GOING TO AFRICA!) On a mission trip, of course, but it's so cool! It'll be my adventure and I'll love it! (Hopefully)
Jurassic Park: Rewritten, Ch. 10
Grant:
"I'm tired," Lex complained in my ear. I was already carrying her on my back but she still whined.
One reason why I don't like kids.
We had left the tree when the first signs of light poked over the island. There was evidence of another rainstorm, and I had stayed awake all night listening to the T-Rex roar and the Brachiosaurs bellow.
"Dr. Grant, how far away do you think we are from Grandpa?" Tim looked up from his place beside me and I winced. The kid was filthy, and his little bump on the head didn't look so little, anymore. He smiled at me helpfully, looking ready to follow me off a cliff.
Another reason I hate kids.
I eventually lugged the kids over a grassy hill and out into bright sunlight. From our vantage point we could see an enormous green plain spread out before us. A small herd of dinosaurs loped below us in the grass. I decided to put Tim's fascination with dinosaurs to work.
"What dinosaurs are those, Timmy?" I asked him. He looked startled that I had asked him a question in the first place.
"They're uh- Gallimimus." He snapped his fingers at the answer and seemed very pleased with himself. I nodded and lowered Lex off my back in order to inspect the creatures better.
The Gallimimus were bipeds, and stood taller than me. They were a dirty brown color, and they all ran together in perfect formation.
"You see that, Tim? Look at how precise their movements are; almost like flocking birds evading a predator." I breathed,. Lex rolled her eyes, and Tim gave a nervous laugh.
"Uh, they're flocking this way." \He was right.
I quickly grabbed the kids by the hands, ignoring Lex's complaints. We ran as fast as we could, but the Gallimimus herd overtook us. My earlier calculations had been wrong, the animals were about to my shoulder, and the tallest of them reached my head. They looked like a herd of juveniles instead of adults. They darted around us, calling and screeching. I dragged Lex and Tim behind a fallen tree in the field and pressed them against it. The Gallimimus leaped over the wood, kicking it as they passed. They wheeled again and we could see them travel back down the hill.
A loud, earsplitting roar made Lex clap her hands over her ears with a squeal. The T-Rex burst from the trees and attacked the Gallimimus posse. The herd banked as one and fled, but one fledgling stumbled in confusion and was brought down by the large carnivore. I fumbled to cover the kids' eyes but they saw it all.
I frowned as the Rex tore into the Gallimimus' innards. Gallimimus fossils weren't small, and Tim's identification had been correct- these animals had the posture, shape, speed, and skill of a Gallimimus, which meant…
They're evolving," I whispered. "Breeding and evolving."
Ellie:
"John , the lights won't come back on." Arnold reported, spinning his chair to face us. I was still shaken from my encounter with the Rex, and I was worried beyond belief for the others.
"We have to get the power back." I said strongly. John, Arnold, and Muldoon stared at me incredulously.
"All we need is to reboot the power grid, right?" I asked hopefully.
"And how do you suppose we do that, Dr. Sattler?" Hammond asked quietly, "The fences are down, which means that all the dinosaurs are loose- all of them!" His voice rose considerably but I strode to the walkie-talkie rack and grabbed one defiantly. I clipped the device to my belt and turned it on.
"I'm on channel two," I said, "Talk me through the process." The other three stared at me, openmouthed.
"Dr. Sattler, if you're going out with those bastards then I am, too." Muldoon said suddenly. He plucked his shotgun from a chair and slung it over his back. I nodded gratefully.
"Then I guess that makes two of us." I walked to the door, ready to leave.
"Miss Sattler, maybe I should…" I turned to face John. He was red and seemed to have trouble speaking.
"What?"
"Well- because you're a, um- and I'm a- ahem." I frowned and tossed him a walkie-talkie.
"We can discuss your sexism theories later. Now- channel two."
Alice:
Ian was in so much pain.
I tried to move him as gently as I could, but every once and a while he would let out a small groan or hiss softly between clenched teeth, He would make wry, snarky comments to break the tension and ease his pain but I could tell it didn't work very well.
"We'll have to thank John for such a wonderful-ah!- trip when we get back." Ian broke off into a pained sigh. I shifted his weight a little and kept walking. He suddenly became much heavier and fell from my grip with a grunt.
"Ian!" He lay crumpled on the ground, I fell to my knees beside him. "Ian wake up!" I pleaded. I hadn't realized how much he had been supporting himself while we maneuvered through the jungle, I had thought I was helping him by holding him up, but apparently he had been doing it himself all along.
"Just go on without me," He sighed, "Leave me here."
"No! I'm not going to leave you here for the Rex to eat!" I was appalled. What had happened to the sarcastic chaotician in the helicopter? "We're going to make it back, find Alan, Ellie, and the kids, and get off this island alive!" I was almost sobbing now, being the strong warrior I was. Ian's wry, trademark smile bent his lips as he smirked at me.
"I'm so glad you care, Miss Dawson. You've passed Phase Two of the Future Mrs. Malcolm Test." I spluttered for a moment, until Ian winced again. Unfortunately, my anger disappeared faster than I would have liked it to. I gently righted Ian and struggled out of the trees.
I finally pulled Ian out of the jungle and into a field. Tall, green grass waved lazily but an acrid stench was in the air. Turning to our right, I saw the mauled carcass of a young biped scattered on the ground.
Ian hissed softly and I swallowed the rising bile in my throat.
"Miss Dawson, we're ah, really exposed out here; maybe we should move." Ian suggested. I nodded but started dragging him across the plain. Malcolm tightened his grip on my arm to support himself. He now leaned harder on me than he had before, and to tell the truth I felt a little proud. Ian cleared his throat irritatedly,
"Maybe I wasn't clear enough: trees are that-a-way. We stay by trees. Us safe."
"Stop talking like a kid, Dr. Malcolm, I know." I shot back at him. Ian frowned.
"Alice, I don't think we're safe out here. It'd be better by the edge of the trees." His voice was low and serious again, which really bothered me. I felt useless again.
"Look at these," I said halfheartedly. "I was going to follow them and hope they'd lead us back to the Visitor's Center." I nodded with my head towards the ground at a large set of footprints mirrored on either side by two pairs of smaller ones, no doubt from Grant and the kids. Ian frowned and pointed.
"But look at those." Large, three-toed footprints about a foot long appeared behind Grant's steps every few feet or so. I gently set Ian on the ground and knelt.
"The spacing is small and these are more fresh, so the dinosaurs were walking normally, not hunting." I muttered quietly.
"But look there," Ian said hoarsely, "That sweep of dirt shows they leaned back to smell them." I inspected the mark and saw that he was right; the dirt had been moved as if swept by a heavy tail.
Most biped dinosaurs' tails were held up for balance, so the animal must have been leaning back to sniff the air.
"There's carrion over there," I said hurriedly, "Don't you think it was smelling that?" Ian shook his head grimly.
"Not it- they." I noticed more prints pressed into the soft ground.
"Oh God." I breathed.
A.N.- I have an excuse for why Ian is so serious and kinda OOC-ish-but-not-really-OOC-just-different!
But that's in the next chapter! XD Notice that Ian called Alice by her first name to get her attention and was dead serious. *shivers* And Alice is calling him Ian all the time now, except for when she talks to him aloud! Romantic development! (I hope.)
Love you all, thanks for support and stay tuned!
