THUD! The sound of my Jo staff hitting the bag reverberated through the gym in the Batcave. It had only been a few days since I moved out of the cave, but my situation had distinctly improved, though the first morning was a bit awkward.
When I woke up that morning I almost didn't realize where I was. Bruce had brought my things up to a guest bedroom that rivaled my whole apartment in size. I showered, dressed, and made my way down to the dining room. When I saw Bruce sitting at the table drinking coffee and reading the morning paper my heart skipped a beat. How long had I wanted to see under that mask? What was there was an intensely handsome man with piercing blue eyes that never failed to stop me in my tracks.
I shook my head to clear the thoughts. I had to stop those kinds of ideas. The more I thought about the vision I had, the more sure I was that I had to prevent it. What had happened in it was clear. I loved Batman, but he was leaving me. Why else would I be crying in the vision?
"Ah, Miss White. Good morning," Alfred said, coming up behind me. I jumped about a foot in the air. I had met Alfred briefly last night. He seemed like a kind man.
"Good morning, Alfred," I responded, moving to take a seat beside Bruce who sat at the head of the table, "I told you, please call me Cass. Miss White is too formal."
"Good luck getting him to agree to that," Bruce said, smiling at me. I about fell out of my seat. Batman smiling?
"Maybe we can meet in the middle. How about Cassandra?" I asked Alfred. He smiled lightly and nodded.
"If you insist," he replied, and set a steaming cup of coffee down in front of me. I was just about to take a sip when a loud voice interrupted.
"Prison break!" I jumped and turned to see a young man standing in the doorway staring at me. I figured it was a safe deduction that this was Robin, unmasked.
"It's all right," Bruce intervened before I had a chance to speak, "She knows."
"How?" he asked, taking a seat across from me.
"Hey, I'm not stupid," I said.
"Her visions didn't hurt either," Bruce told him.
"Well," Robin said, leaning back in his chair, "I guess we might as well let both cats out of the bag. I'm Tim. Time Drake." I smiled.
"I'm glad to finally know the both of you. And to be out of that cave." Bruce cleared his throat lightly.
"Yes, um... About that," he said, "I truly am sorry that we had to keep you down there. I thought it would be the safest place for you."
"It's okay," I responded, "I should have been more grateful that I have you both here to protect me."
"Now that everything is out in the open there's no reason why you can't have access to the manor. However, you should be careful to stay on the grounds. And-"
"Sir," Alfred interrupted, "Your car is here." Bruce folded his paper and set it down on the table.
"Don't give Alfred too much trouble," he said to me, smiling, "And, ah... I left something for you in the gym. Tim, do you need a ride?"
"Yeah, sure," he replied, downing the last of his coffee before standing up to follow Bruce out the door.
"See you guys later?" I asked.
"Of course!" Tim called, waving. Once they had gone the vast emtpiness of the manor seemed to weight down on me. It seemed bright and cheery when Bruce had been here, but now that he was gone...
Stop it, Cass! Thoughts like that were what was going to lead to pain and misery.
"What are your plans today Mi-, I mean, Cassandra?" Alfred asked me as he began clearing the breakfast dishes away.
"I don't know," I replied, looking around. Without anyone here, the manor was almost as daunting as the cave, "I guess I'll go down to the gym for awhile."
"Very good," he said, and left me alone. After changing into more gym-appropriate clothing I headed down to the cave. It was there that I found what Bruce had left me. The Jo staff I was now using with a note attached that read "Robin and I discussed your training, and believe you will do well with a staff. Try it out and we will continue your training later. Batman". Brisk and to the point. Very Batman. But Bruce... He seemed to be warm and caring.
Which one was the real mask?
