You'll have to wait until next week to find out if it is a good surprise or not! Anyway, enjoy this chapter. I had fun writing it and I hope you have fun reading it! Let me know what you think.
When Jane got home that night, she was fully aware of the smile on her face. But she didn't give a damn really. Spending the evening with Maura was wonderful. She felt the connection between them and every time they spent time together, she felt it grow. She felt her own feelings for the other girl grow. And even though, it scared the shit out of her, it also made her feel like she was the luckiest person on the world.
As she stepped into the living room and saw her family huddled together on the couch watching a movie, she felt her insecurities return. Her family was completely different than Maura's, her whole life was completely different. She had pushed the 'not being good enough' thought to the furthest corner in her mind, but it popped straight to the front. And not only that. But what if her parents found out?
She knew their opinion about homosexuals. It was the reason she kept her feelings and thoughts to herself. Truthfully, she wasn't even herself when she was around her family. But the moment she met Maura, she felt her whole life change. Felt a shift deep within herself. And she just knew that she couldn't hide who she was any longer. She could be herself with Maura and for now, that was enough. It had to be enough. Until she had the courage to tell her family, she would have to deal for now.
Swallowing her nerves, she stepped into the living room. Her father was the first one to notice her.
"Janie! I didn't hear you come in. How was work?" It was something that her mother would say and ask her, but the way he did felt more natural and less nosy.
She smiled at her Pops. "Work was fine. What movie are you watching?" She tried to change the topic, knowing full well that her mother knew she was supposed to be home hours ago. It seemed that her luck had left her at birth, when her mother once again said the exact thing Jane dreaded.
"You were supposed to be home hours ago young lady! Where were you." Angela had turned around and cast a apprehensive eye ate Jane.
It was Frank that interjected. "Ange, leave her alone. She probably met up with some friends. She is allowed to have a life outside of work you know."
"I know that Frank! And unlike you, she does." Jane cringed. Now they were fighting because of her. Angela turned back around, her eyes filled with anger at her husband. "Though I would prefer it if you would let us know if you're going to be home for dinner or not." Jane merely nodded, not trusting her voice.
Angela seemed satisfied with the answer and patted the empty spot next to her. "Come sit and join us Jane!" Jane gave her a week smile, but complied nevertheless.
Cautiously sitting down next to her mother, she saw both Frankie and Tommy concentrating on the movie, drowning out everything else around them. She felt a pang of jealousy at that. It seemed as if the two boys had always been able to tune out whatever they didn't want to hear. Jane didn't have that luxury, instead being the one to always be involved with whatever was going on. Was it a fight between her parents, or her mother yelling at something that the neighbors did, she was always involved one way or another.
Right now however, when she felt Angela's arm go around her shoulder, she didn't stop her. Maybe this way she could make her mother feel a bit happier and make herself feel like she wasn't that much of a crappy daughter. A small smile spread on her face and she snuggled a little closer towards her mother, something she never did. She didn't see Angela's smile, but she felt it somehow.
Jane didn't have to work the next day and spend most of her morning playing basketball in their driveway. Tommy and Frankie played with/against her for a while, before they went out to do their own thing, leaving Jane by herself. She didn't mind however, basketball always seemed a good way for her to think about things. Things she pushed back when she joined her family on the couch last night.
Her thoughts were all over the place for a while, going from Maura to her mom, to her dad, back to Maura, to her own feelings, to her brothers, back to Maura and to her mom. Eventually, she grabbed the ball, frowned down at it and closed her eyes. She took a deep breath, succeeding in compartmentalizing her thoughts. This made her think of Maura and how the two of them were already rubbing off of each other.
Maura. It was as good a place to start as any. The girl made her heart flutter, made her stomach do somersaults. Only the thought of her made a smile appear on her face. She brought out the best in her and Jane knew it. Maura was someone she wanted to spend all her time with, she wanted to know everything about her. The good, the bad, everything. The feelings Jane felt when she was around the honey-blonde were something she had never felt before. In all of her previous relationships, she had never felt the connection, felt the strong urge to see the girl.
But as good as these thoughts were making her feel, the nagging in the back of her mind continued. It kept telling her that she wasn't good enough for someone like Maura. And even if she were, what would her mother say? Jane witnessed (more than once) the disgust her mother showed when she saw two girls or guys walk hand in hand. It scared her. Even thinking back on it scared her. But the nineteen year old knew that she had to tell her one day. She had thought about the not telling her until she was out of the house and on her own, but that option seemed to become less and less appealing the more she got to know Maura.
Jane opened her eyes again. Somehow, she felt better. She knew that all she was doing was postponing the inevitable, but she didn't even know how to tell her mother, or where to start. She didn't want to see the disappointment in her eyes when she would finally tell her. Even more important, she didn't want her mother to be angry with her for being different.
Drawing her eyebrows together, she let out a deep sigh. She was getting ahead of herself. What if things didn't work out between her and Maura? The girl would be going to college in nine days. There was a possibility that they wouldn't see each other again. Jane would be joining the academy soon as well. Her birthday was approaching and she would finally be able to do what she wanted to do. It would take up a lot of her time and Maura's studies would as well. So when were they supposed to see each other?
Jane threw the ball away angrily, running a frustrated hand through her hair. Why was she thinking about all of these things anyway? If it really was true, then what was she waiting for, an open invitation? No, she had to make the best of these days. Quickly calculating how much time they actually had to spend each other, Jane was surprised to find out it was more than she thought.
They had nine days left, of which Jane had to work three. So that would leave six days for them to be together and do whatever they wanted. Screw the whole 'not being good enough' and telling her Ma. That could wait for another time. Right now, she had little time to be with the girl she was crazy for. A smile spread across her lips and before anyone could register what was going on, Jane was on her way to Maura's.
The knock made Maura jump up from her spot on the couch. For a minute she wondered who it could be. Whoever it was, they sounded desperate. Cautiously walking towards the door, she peeked through the hole. She saw Jane on the other side, clearly frustrated over something. She kept switching from one foot to the other, running a hand through her hair. When Maura saw Jane get ready to knock again, she quickly opened the door.
"Jane? What are y-" She was forcefully cut off by Jane who stepped forward and captured her lips in a heated, desperate kiss.
It took Maura a moment to recover, but she eagerly returned the kiss when she got her bearings back. Wrapping her arms around Jane's neck, she heard the door being kicked shut. Smiling against eager lips, she felt Jane ask for entrance. Maura opened her mouth, moaning when she felt Jane's warm wet tongue against her own. She had envisioned this moment for the past days, but the real deal was a hundred times better.
They let their tongues explore, getting to know each other on a deeper, more intimate level. It seemed like hours had passed before they broke apart. Both girls were breathing heavily, trying to suck in as much oxygen as they could. Their eyes were locked and Maura could see the arousal she was feeling staring back at her. Swallowing down her crazy feelings, she found her voice.
"That was… wow." Jane smirked, leaning in to plant a chaste kiss on Maura's swollen pink lips.
"I made Maura Isles speechless. Do I get a reward for that?" Maura grinned back at her, pulling Jane impossible closer.
"What do you have in mind?" Jane shrugged nonchalantly. "How about this?" The hot breath on Maura's lips was quickly replaced by a hot mouth. Jane moved her lips against Maura's expertly, and the honey-blonde moaned at the contact.
She let her hands tangle in dark locks, felt Jane's hands on her waist. It was perfect. Jane was perfect. And nothing could ruin this moment. They were so immersed in each other, that they didn't hear the door open. They did however, hear a suitcase fall on the ground with a loud thump. They broke apart quicker than lightning and came face to face with Constance Isles, her eyes and mouth wide open at what she had just witnessed.
A/N: They finally kissed, whoohoo! And Constance showed up unanounced. What's going to happen now? Stay tuned for chapter 11 next week! Hope you guys liked it :)
