The room was quiet as students came and left Study Hall. Three of the four ninja were either finishing or trying to finish their homework, but getting utterly distracted by something else. Zane, the only ninja who wasn't in Study Hall, was going to some extra classes. After the Serpentine fiasco, Zane had signed up for the other classes, leaving the other ninja having nothing else to do but to go to Study Hall.
During the two weeks they were there, the three ninjas found that the teacher, Ms. D as she liked to be called, had a very good sense of humor, was pretty lax in her rules, and often bought the students sodas. She was the gifted class teacher, but she also was the guardian for Study Hall for the end of the day since her classes ended around 1 PM.
She was also Cole's, Jay's and Kai's favorite teacher and she had taken a shine to them as well.
"Ms. D! Guess what, guess what," an excited and obviously slap-happy Kai said loudly, breaking the silence of the room. "If you smack Palemon with a ruler he gets a welt!" As if to exhibit his claim he brought down his flexible shatter-resistant ruler down hard upon Jay's arm.
"Owww!" the disguised blue ninja yelled in indignantly. He rubbed the offending spot as a bright red welt almost instantly began to mar the pale skin of his forearm.
Mrs. D stared wide eyed for a brief moment of hesitation as she tried to decide what to do.
"Gee, what else would happen, Simitarr?" Cole said with a growl of frustration that clearly said he was at the end of his rope, before he smacked his head down upon the table.
"No I mean he gets a welt even faster and bigger than most people," Kai said knowingly. "See?" He smacked his own arm with the ruler with the same force and seemed pleased with himself when his claim was proved correct. "I wonder why?" he mused softly.
"I'll show you a welt!" Jay threatened. They all knew it was an empty threat, though.
Mrs. D rubbed her temples in exasperation. "There will be no more of that thank you," she said, snatching the ruler away from Kai.
"Sorry," Kai muttered, at least having the grace to look a little shamefaced. "I guess I was just bored."
"No kidding," Cole's words were muffled by the wood of his desk.
"Why don't we go over some of the things you were discussing in literature class today until the bell rings, so you are ready for the quarter test," she suggested. Without waiting for a reply, she launched into a question. "What do you think is the most prudent thing to do, when you are given a timed essay on a topic you don't know much about, or don't have as much experience with?" she asked.
Cole's head shot up from its prone position on his desk, "That's easy," Cole said with a smile. "You just fill it with lots and lots of fluff, in cleverly worded sentences to make you sound knowledgeable while basically saying nothing. Politicians do it all the time, and when you write it, the fluffier the better!" He turned towards his friends whilst pulling a paper out of his notebook, "See this essay I wrote for Mrs. Becky that I just got back today and got an A on? This baby is 98% fluff. I forgot to read the current event reading packet she handed us for homework and cracked this out on the spot on our practice test," he announced proudly.
Mrs. D simply shook her head as she held it in her hands. An undignified snort came from her, and for a moment the ninja could not tell if she was exasperated angry or perhaps even felling scornful, until she lifted her head slightly and they saw the faint smile on her lips. "Indeed, Schist, indeed. But might I suggest that politicians might not be the best of people to learn from?" she chuckled. "Nor would I encourage you to use your fluff writing skills in place of doing the actual prep work needed to complete your assignments. That being said, not bad Schist, not bad at all. And Simitarr, the reason some people welt more easily than others is because of the difference of the number of nerve receptors between people. Palemon's skin is obviously more sensitive, ergo, when he gets hit, the nerve response is more dramatic, causing the capillaries to dilate faster which causes the welt, and fluid oozes into the surrounding tissue, causing a more dramatic swelling in the spot that was struck, rather than in your case." She was almost laughing now. "Might I suggest reading a text book next time you are bored, rather than testing it out on your friend?"
All of them were smiling now, even Jay, after he had shot Kai a baleful expression after hearing the detailed description of the effects of his brother's ruler abuse.
There were a few moments of an amused silence before there was a knock on the wooden door. "Come in," Ms. D called, a smile still playing on her lips. The door opened and Zane poked his head in.
"Hello Ms. D," he said respectfully and she responded in kind; he then turned to his brothers. "Ready to go?"
"Heck yeah!" Jay called as he quickly shoved everything that was his on the table he was using as a desk in his backpack.
Kai and Cole put their things in their backpacks in a slightly more organized fashion, but still as fast as Jay. As they were walking out of the classroom, Ms. D handed Kai his ruler back with a wink. He quickly slid the ruler into Jay's partially open backpack, because Kai didn't feel like taking his off, then unzipping it, then re-zipping it. Besides, he knew Jay wouldn't mind.
