Chapter 9- Redfeather (Again…)

Redfeather stood frozen with his mouth open, staring at the twoleg nest. What did you do? A voice screamed in his head. His heart raced and his head throbbed. What had he done? Streakfur was trapped with twolegs, and his brother, Spiderheart, was down below on the ground, oblivious to the situation.

As if he had read his thoughts, Spiderheart's voice came from below.

"Hey, Redfeather, tell Streakfur to move his rump. I'm practically sitting in a puddle!" Spiderheart meowed exasperatedly as rain splashed against the ground.

Redfeather closed his eyes and took a deep, calming breath. "Spiderheart, come here."

Redfeather shuffled forward and the gray tom jumped up. His eyes scanned the area then he glared at Redfeather with and icy gaze.

"Where's Streakfur?" He asked, his voice just as cold as his gaze. Redfeather hung his head in shame and pointed with his tail towards the twoleg nest.

"How could you do this?" Spiderheart screeched. "He is my brother. If I go back to LightningClan without him, I'll be hated. My parents would be so mad."

Redfeather opened his mouth to apologize, but Spiderheart spoke first, his tone even angrier than before.

"I think I overestimated you, Redfeather. I thought that you would be a great leader, able to lead us here and lead us back. But no. You are a failure. I hate you!" Spiderheart spat. Then, he disappeared into the undergrowth.

Redfeather stared at the ground, grief-stricken. Spiderheart was right, he was a failure. Failure, failure, failure. The word echoed through his head in a slow moan. As the rain pour down his back, Redfeather stared at the ground. Great. A failure like me trying to get his friend out of a twoleg nest. I bet I'll fail again. Redfeather kept studying the ground when he suddenly felt another body beside him. He slowly lifted his head and saw a white she-cat with black spots sitting beside him.

"What's wrong?" She asked quietly. "I might be able to help."

Redfeather glared at her. "It's none of your business, kittypet."

The she-cat's blue eyes remained unblinking as she contemplated Redfeather. "You don't need to be mad. I might be able to help." Her tone grew sharper. "I am not a kittypet. Do I even look like I have a collar?"

"Before I tell you anything, can we do introductions first?" Redfeather asked, turning his head away from her big, inflexible eyes.

She took a step back. "My name is Aspen. I am not a kittypet. I am a traveler, and I come from the abandon nest not too far from here." So you're a rouge. Redfeather thought, amused. But you call yourself a traveler.

"My name is Redfeather, and I come from…. Faraway from here." Redfeather meowed hesitantly.

Aspen narrowed her eyes. "Are you one of those Clan cats?"

Redfeather tried to hide the shock in his voice. "How do you know about them?"

Aspen waved the question away. "I'll tell you later. Anyway, what's your problem? I saw your little friend storm off." Suddenly, the rain poured harder and Redfeather leapt off the fence and scrambled under the small pine tree in the nest.

"So this is how it started. We were traveling along this twoleg place when a twoleg came out and captured my friend, named Streakfur. Streakfur's brother, named Spiderheart, was on the ground and he didn't know what had happened. So, I called him up and he got mad at me for letting Streakfur get captured. Then, he stormed off." Redfeather explained.

Aspen blinked slowly, processing what Redfeather had told her. "So… Streakfur is inside the twoleg nest?"

Redfeather nodded.

"I think I might have a way to save your friend." She meowed after a long silence. "Follow me." She led him out from under the pine tree and to a hole in the side of the twoleg nest.

"You can crawl through here to get to your friend. I'll wait out here until you're done." Redfeather nodded.

"You don't think you're going without me, do you?" A voice asked from behind Redfeather. He whipped around and found himself staring at Spiderheart as he paced along the fence.

"No, we just didn't know if you were done with your fit." Redfeather shot back.

Spiderheart jumped off the fence, his lip curling back into a snarl. "I don't regret a word that I said, but my brother is trapped in there with those nasty twolegs. I'll do anything to get him out, even if it means working with you to get him out. Just don't expect us to be on a friendly basis." He growled.

Redfeather dipped his head, then unsheathed his claws. "Let's go."

.

"I'll be right here when you get back!" Aspen called as they disappeared into the tunnel. Immediately, Redfeather felt his paws hit something soft and mushy. He heard Spiderheart give a soft hiss of disgust as his paws sank into the mesh.

"Let's keep going." Redfeather meowed, wincing as his voce echoed loudly around the brick walls. They padded onwards in silence, sometimes going in what seemed like circles.

SafeClan, I hope Aspen was right. Will we ever find him? Redfeather thought. Suddenly, a terrible thought struck him. What if Aspen tricked us so we would die down here? Redfeather dismissed the thought. We will find Streakfur. Redfeather declared. I know we will.

Suddenly, the tunnel grew lighter. The ground started to slope upwards, and Redfeather soon found himself looking into the twoleg nest through metal bars.

"Spiderheart, come here!" Redfeather hissed through gritted teeth.

The gray tom leapt up and stared through the bars. "What do we do now?" He asked.

Redfeather ignored his question. "I think the twolegs are gone…" He muttered under his breath.

Eyes scanning the nest, Redfeather opened his mouth. "Streakfur!" He yowled. Almost immediately a black and white pelt appeared in front of them.

"I knew it!" Streakfur exclaimed. "I can't talk now, though. The big twoleg is coming, and I don't want to get caught." Streakfur raced off, and Redfeather heard the clip-clomp clip-clomp of the twoleg's feet.

Redfeather glanced at Spiderheart. "Now," He meowed. "We wait."
