It became harder to breath as I took one closer step towards the rusty white screen door. The porch and the white paint that was beginning to peel off were all to familiar.
I don't want to do this anymore... I thought to myself
But I couldn't, I had to. It was the only way.
My hands started shaking as I reached out to the handle even though I was wear
ing a brown pea coat and white warm mittens. I wasn't cold
The door squeaked as I inched it open.
An aroma of sweat, rotten food and alcohol invaded my nose and I almost threw up right then and there. I cringed and put my hand over my scrunched nose. My house was cold and dark. I could barely see anything. The only light provided was the sunshine peeping through the closed blue curtains. It took my everything not to run out of there and never come back. But I knew that at some point I had
to
This just happened to be the time
It was Christmas time and Soda and his family were going to have a small Christmas gathering. Of coarse I was invited immediately once the plan was mentioned.
I wanted to look nice for the party. All I had were some clothes I borrowed from Linda and a couple sweats from Soda but that was about it.
I decided, after a lot of thinking, that I should go back home to get a special little something I had hidden in the back of my closet.
Before my mother had died she always wanted to buy me cute clothing and dresses. I was like her own little porcelain doll. I never wore most of the clothes though.
Now that I thought about it it made me feel guilty and sad. All my mother ever wanted was for her daughter to wear nice dresses and look beautiful. Any mother would.
I shook my head from the memory and headed towards my room. I cautiously opened my wooden white door and stepped inside.
It was completely trashed. The books I once loved were merely ripped pages and broken binders lain across the wooden floor. My mad was unmade and shards of glass I assumed were from beer bottles were scattered everywhere. Photos of me and Steven were cracked and destroyed. My lamp was thrown a crossed the room and made a dent in the wall.
I gasped and and covered my mouth with my hand. I stepped inside, glass crunching beneath my shoes. I knelt down and and picked up a picture of me and Steven. He was smiling at the camera, two evident dimples popped up on his cheeks. His arm was wrapped around my shoulder
I was looking up at him and smiling like a goof and had my arm around his waist because I was to small to reach his shoulder.
I stared at the picture for a very long time. I could feel his gaze looking straight at me with his bright green eyes. A burning sensation erupted from my chest and I choked out a sob.
"He was so happy" I said to myself.
"So, so happy" I cried.
I wiped away my unshod tears and put the photo in my bag. I walked carefully towards my closet and opened it. Most of my clothes were scattered across the room so it wasn't very hard to find the white dress.
Neatly folded, I put it in my bag and grabbed a pair of red flats and started heading my way out my room when I heard the front door open and close.
For a moment I swear I felt my heart stop.
But just as soon as it stopped beating, it started beating like crazy and I felt a lump in my throat and my mouth go dry.
I froze completely and watched in horror as the man who was the cause of all my nightmares came into view. He walked in the kitchen and I could hear him open the refrigerator and open a beer can. He walked back into the living room and threw himself on the old dirty couch with a grunt and turned the tv on.
When it looked like he was glued couch and eyes fixed on the tv, I quietly made my way back into my room. My mind started racing with thoughts of panic and I felt my heart beat a mile per minute. My hands started to shake and I squeezed my eyes shut
Please no! Please not today!
With clenched fists I decided to make a plan on how I would escape without being caught. I could either
A) run straight to the door as fast as my weak legs could take me and run all the way to Sodas house,
Or
B) wait for him to fall asleep and walk quietly to the door.
There was always the option of my door but my father had bolted it shut...
Asshole
I decided that plan B was better for my survival.
I snuck my hand through my bag and felt the soft fabric of the white dress. I started rubbing it between my index finger and thumb nervously.
Flashback
"Joey, Darling come see what I bought for you!"
My mothers soft voice called out for me. I groaned and put down the book I was reading. I got up from my comfy bed and made my way over to her in the living room. My mother was looking down adoringly at a white piece of fabric in her hands. She started feeling it and smoothing it out with one hand.
She noticed me walk in and looked up. She smiled at me showing her dimples, just like Steven.
"Look" she motioned her hand to come towards her.
"What is it?" I asked when I was by her side.
"A dress, it's so pretty darling. I saw it hanging in one of the shops a couple weeks ago and I thought how beautiful my Josephine must look with it."
She handed the dress to me and I felt it. It was actually very soft. Like silk, I thought to myself.
"I saved up enough money so I could buy it for you darling. Go try it on." She said to me with a beaming smile and sparkling green eyes.
The dress was beautiful. It almost looked like a wedding dress to me. It was a sleeveless teacup dress with a type of lace over it. The lace had a flower design and wrapped around the waist was a medium sized white bow.
Two months later she was diagnosed with cancer. We tried every treatment. She did chemo. For a while it was gone, but it came back to soon and she died.
I could hear a light snore waking me up from my memory trance and I snapped back to reality. I peeped through the door and saw my father lightly snoring on the couch, one hand dangling from the couch.
It was now or never.
I made beeline towards the front door walking on my tip toes the whole time. I barely put my hand on the door knob when a deep voice said,
"Where do you think your going sweetie?"
I felt the hair on my arms and back rise and I stopped breathing. I slowly turned around and was met by a pair of brown menacing eyes. He was already on his feet and taking slow steps towards me.
I willed myself to move but I was literally frozen in fear. I felt myself struggling to breath but the millisecond.
"I said, where do you think your going?" My father said in a louder voice.
"I-I thought you w-were asleep" I said in a very quiet voice.
He scoffed at me and shook his head.
"Where have you been Joey? I missed you" he said in a softer voice but his expression gave everything away. He was lying straight out if his ass.
I was to scared to speak. I tried swallowing the lump in my throat but I ended up wanting to throw up. "Not speaking huh?" He snarled
Suddenly he lunged forward me causing me to wake from my trance and move away. He missed me by a centimeter. My hand flew towards the doorknob and I almost got it opened until I was yanked back from my collar. I gagged at the sudden movement and collided with a hard body.
He wrapped his hands around me very tightly that I couldn't breath. He put one hand around my neck and the other around my stomach.
"I missed you so much darling" he whispered maliciously in my ear. I cried out and tried to pry his hands of me but I was to weak. I could feel myself get lightheaded and I started seeing black dots. I flung my hands wildly and managed to somewhat make contact with his greasy face.
"Fuck!" He spat out letting go of me and grabbing his face. I made no hesitation to run off but before I could he whacked me in the back of my head making me fall forwards face first.
My cheek made contact with the hard wood floor. I heard a crack and I cried out in pain. It felt like someone smacked my head head against a cold metal wall repeatedly. My ankle started hurting like a bitch and I felt hit tears run down my face freely.
I flipped myself over and saw his menacing figure walk towards me. My vision stated getting blurry and it was getting hard to focus on anything.
"Please no" I rasped out. I started crawling backwards until my back met the wall. He crouched down at me and frowned. He touched my cheek tenderly and I hissed at the pain radiating from it.
"You look like your mother" He said. "Soon you'll be her" he said in a voice that scared the living hell out of me, mostly because of what he said. He lifted his hand in a fist and I silently prayed that my death would be a quick one.
Are you there God? Please help me
I closed my eyes and waited for impact but nothing came. I opened my eyes just in time to see him being flung backwards. And I saw him. My guardian Angel. His usual beautiful sparkling brown eyes were blank and replaced with fury and anger. He was shaking with clenched fists.
"What the hell?" My father exclaimed. He looked up with wide eyes and saw the figure in front standing with hunched shoulders in front of him.
"Who the hell are you?" My father yelled.
"Your worst nightmare" he replied.
I almost wanted to laugh at how cliche that sounded but I knew that would be seriously inappropriate and also my mouth was a mini Sahara desert and I had no ounce of energy left in my frail body.
Soda grabbed an empty beer bottle and smashed it over his head. My father was knocked out on the floor and laid there limp.
"Soda" I whispered barely recognizing my own voice before falling I to a pit of black unconsciousness
