This one takes place two days after Part 20/21, where Kairi, Asch, and Sync are attacked by Zion, Star, and Dante. Also, laugh at Reighn's sarcasm and love his strange sense of humor. And misplaced assumptions, because we know Asch didn't go with Kairi because he loves her. Oh, and then be sad.

Bleh... Only own my OC's.

Silver Ripples – Reighn
New Assignment

I stepped into the cathedral quietly, leaving my hood up. My blue hair wasn't unique, but aside from my little sister? It wasn't as if our hair color was common. I didn't really want people reporting to Mohs that I was here. After all, I wasn't supposed to be. I was supposed to be in Sheridan, making a living for myself there.

Honestly, Sheridan was starting to sound like a wonderful idea. Me and Aerith and nobody else. And certainly no Van. I was seriously getting tired of him and his ideas. Also, his over-possessiveness of Asch. That was really driving me nuts. One of these days, Asch was going to find a nice girl and leave Daath to be with her, and Van is going to be without one grumpy redhead.

That having been said, I pity any girl who has to deal with him.

Ah well, at least I got almost ten days off this time.

Now in a slightly better mood than before, I opened up the door to Van's office, entering just in time to catch the tail end of what I'm sure was an interesting conversation.

"I wouldn't be up here if it was just Asch, commandant. Sync is gone too, and Largo found blood on the road just this side of the river. Human blood," Legretta was reporting. I raised an eyebrow and lowered my hood, but it didn't look like she or Van had noticed my entrance.

"You think they may have attacked him?" he asked incredulously. Legretta didn't respond immediately.

"I don't think we should dismiss the possibility," she finally said. I crossed my arms.

"Besides, if someone attacked Sync, wouldn't you think they'd leave the body behind?" I asked, gaining the attention of the other two. Legretta frowned.

"How long have you been listening?" she asked. I shrugged.

"Not long. Long enough to figure out that Asch and Sync are missing," I replied. Van sighed.

"Not... 'missing,' exactly. Asch told me two days ago he was leaving with that girl, so I shouldn't be surprised that he did," the Dorian General started. I couldn't help it, I ducked my head to hide my snickers. Hadn't I just been thinking that Asch would run off with a girl? "The thing is, Sync left after him, and now he's missing," Van continued, oblivious to my train of thought, which went from 'ha, ha!' to 'maybe the girl had a sister?'

Yes, I'm standing here in Van's office, mentally snarking at him. Shush.

"So, your next assignment is probably going to be more entertaining than the last few," Van said, finally getting me to mentally sober back up. I looked up, seeing that he was already holding out a very thin folder. I sighed, walked over, and took it from him. "Bring back as much information as you can on her," he said bluntly in his way of dismissing me from his office.

I resisted the urge to roll my eyes until I was outside, with the hood back up.

Then I glanced down at the folder and felt my insides start to freeze up, because I recognized that name so well, having wondered about it for so long.

Kairi Balfour... My new assignment was the first pseudo-friend I'd made in two years.

I swallowed and shoved everything down. I wasn't going to let this get to me. I wasn't. Aerith needed the money I made on assignments for Van to eat.

That was the thought I had to keep repeating as I headed home to collect up my stuff.
