Lilah picked the cub that was biting her foot up with a laugh. Swinging the little one into her arms she snuggled her nose against his little fury face. Instantly he started purring returning her snuggle with a kitten nuzzle bringing a smile to her lips. She loved working in the nursery, having the chance to love all the little ones until someone took them home to love them more thoroughly. Their nursery was one of the largest in the Europe, at any given time they had at least three or four cubs waiting to be homed and they had a floating array of other young ones they looked after for any given reason. The shifter population wasn't large, but it was growing thanks to the magical community growth since the first Voldemort war, and now with him gone underground pockets of magic were popping up everywhere.
The cub in her arms began to purr furiously as she snuggled against him and she knew he'd settle happily in a moment. Often all the little ones wanted was to be held and once they got that contact they calmed down. Lifting her head as the cub snuggled into her neck she looked out across the room her eyes locking onto a couple who had a cub on their lap as they stroked their hands over him.
Often when cubs came to the nursery they were in their cat form and they didn't like to change back. This couple had been sat with the cub for over an hour trying to coax him to turn back. Blair already knew that they intending to take the little one home soon, and he approved of the match completely, Lilah just hoped the little one would trust them soon and hopefully before they took him home.
Giving the cub one last snuggle she tucked him into his beg watching as he yawned, his little pink tongue poking out for a moment before he nuzzled into bed his eyes closing. She stroked her fingers over his soft fur once more before she moved around the bed taking in all the small faces around her. It was when she got to the back of the room that she spotted her two favourite rascals.
Max was sat on the edge of the bed his legs swinging looking a little glum. She noted that his chestnut hair was longer than usual and wondered if they had been giving the minders the slip at grooming time again. Lucas was sat next to his brother but was in his cat form, how he liked to spend most of his time. His bright green cat eyes snapped up as she approached and she could see the reproach in them. Max looked up as he felt his brother stiffen next to him and his eyes locked onto Lilah and instantly she withered under the look her smile freezing on her face. Never had she had such a look from a six year old before, he looked both pained and so angry at the same time, and she knew she was getting the same look in cat form from his brother.
"Aw babies what is it?" she asked unable to not go to them.
Sinking to the floor in front of them she reached but didn't touch them, she could feel the waves of anger coming off them and knew that touching them now, even well meaning, wouldn't go down well.
Lucas growled low in his throat, a subtle threat that they both knew didn't really intimidate anyone since he was so little, but Lilah could feel the force behind it and knew one day he would have the power to back it up.
"Ginny hasn't come to see us," Max mumbled and instantly Lilah knew exactly what was wrong with the twins.
Twin shifter cats used to be a common thing, in fact bigger lots of multiple births had been normal, but in the last few decades they had been reduced to the normal one child ratio and fewer and fewer couples were willing to take on twins. These two had been at the refuge longer than most, one reason being that they had taken a lot of time to come out of themselves after their mother had brought them here and never returned, and the other reason was them being such a handful. Lilah knew that she had some sway over the rascals, as did their permanent carer, but the only people the two ever really settled with was Ginny and Harry.
Closing her eyes she felt out the new connection, and instantly Ginny flared in her mind, wrapped solidly beneath Harry. She concentrated on feeling out their state of mind and realising how happy and content they seemed she smiled.
"Ginny hasn't been well," she whispered and she slipped forwards a little her eyes going to the other people scattered around the room who didn't know what had been happening.
Max instantly looked up at her worry deep in his eyes and Lucas jumped down to prowl over to her his face coming to rest on her knee. She reached out then and ran her hand over his head.
"Is she alright?" Max asked and she caught the flash of his cat in his eyes.
"She will be, that's why she hasn't been out. Harry has been looking after her, please believe me you two when I say they weren't purposefully ignoring you, you know they love you."
Max swallowed at her words and she could see the small shiver of pain that he pushed down. She knew these little men had been rejected more than most and unable to see their pain without doing anything she pulled the both of them into her arms and cuddled with them. As always a part of her said she should take them home, but she knew she couldn't handle to two of them by herself. She wanted to but the two of them deserved an actual family, a mated pair that could take hold of them and love them properly.
She moved until she had them both on her lap, Max tucking his face in against her neck while Lucas stretched across her lap his head tucking underneath her arm. She held them for a little while until she felt the anger ebb from both of their little forms though she could still feel their sadness. Looking up she spotted what Lucas was watching and realised it was the couple with the little cub. The cub was much younger than them, barely two, and yet he would be going home soon and the boys knew it. The cub had also only been there for a month, while they had been in the care of the refuge for much longer. She ached for them knowing how unlikely it would be for someone to come for them soon.
Just as her heart started to ache the worst the door opened and she looked up to see Ginny stood there her eyes scanning the room as she looked for something. When they landed on Lilah she smiled brightly and instantly the worry in Lilah's heart lifted. She moved gracefully between the bed's her eyes locked on Lilah and cubs in her arms.
"My little ones why are you so sad," she said her voice a whispered caress that had both of the cubs perking up and looking at her.
Instantly Lucas sprang from Lilah's lap and bounded to Ginny, his little body slipping between her legs and with a bubble of laughter she lifted him up and snuggled him into her arms, his little tongue peeking out as he lapped a kitty kiss against her cheek. She nuzzled against him and pressed a kiss to his pink nose as he purred softly. Carefully she sat next to Lilah, with Lucas curved into her arms, and reached out to run her hand over the back of Max's head.
"I'm sorry I didn't come sooner my little man," she whispered out and watched as max turned his head to peak at her through Lilah's hair.
"Are you alright now, Lilah said you were unwell," he replied and the worry could easily be heard reverberating in his voice.
She smiled warmly at him reaching her arms out to him and he easily slid from Lilah's lap to Ginny's his face burying against her neck. Carefully she pulled him against her and nuzzled her cheek against the top of his head even as she kept Lucas pulled against her.
"I'm fine now my little men, please don't worry," she whispered though Lilah could hear the slight wobble to her voice.
Looking up Lilah saw Harry in the doorway, his eyes locked on Ginny and seemingly seeing nothing else. Leaving the three on the bed Lilah crossed the room to Harry, stepping close so that she could feel the heat radiating off his body. For a moment they both simply stood there watching Ginny with the little ones. Thoughts spilled through Lilah's mind, tumbling so violently that they actually made her stomach churn. Unable to hold her thoughts in any longer the words spilled from her mouth before she could think, and she daren't dare look at Harry as she said them.
"You need to let Ginny take them home Harry, she was born to be a mother," she breathed deeply as she felt him shift beside her but she didn't move, "now if you are becoming a true alpha pair then that pull is going to be even worse for her. She needs someone she can love and protect just as you have her."
Finally Lilah turned to look at him and she could see the cat in his eyes, the power caressing over her skin.
"Look at her with them, they are hers," she said feeling a small tug in her heart.
She would have the boys be hers if she could but seeing them with Ginny told the story clearly. She love them and god help her those boys worshipped her.
Harry didn't say anything as he absorbed her words, he knew how Ginny felt with the boys, could feel it reverberating through his body. He knew the truth of Lilah's words to his very core, Ginny needed those boy desperately.
"We live a dangerous lives Lilah and we have no home to speak of yet," he voiced his concerns even though they seemed weak to his ears.
"I know Harry but you also have help, especially from me," she smiled then suddenly finding something wonderful in her link to the pair.
"I can be there with you and help whenever you need," she stepped closer to him then, pressing her hands against his chest feeling the heat from his muscles, "I want this to Harry. I can't have these boys as mine but Ginny can and I can help."
He looked down at her then, seeing the pleading in her face and knew he couldn't say no. looking up at Ginny and the peace that had settled into her he knew he had no choice in this. So instead he simply looked down at Lilah and gave her a small nod before he moved passed her and walked towards Ginny.
His mate looked up at him as he stopped in front of her and he could see the light in her eyes. Lucas had fallen asleep on her lap and Max was dozing lightly though he did look at Harry with sleepy eyes.
"Alright," he said simply and Ginny felt her heart soar.
She had heard the exchange between Lilah and Harry, felt his heart beat race at the thought of taking on these two little bundles, and yet here he was giving her everything she wanted. She watched him silently as he leant down and scooped Lucas from her lap and tucked him into his arms. His ran his hand over the little body as if memorising him. Ginny could feel the apprehension in his heart but she could also feel the small pocket of wonder.
Harry hadn't grown up like most, he had trained most of his life to be a soldier. Yes he had been loved, lily swathing him with attention, but his life hadn't been normal. Ginny knew about his deep-seated worries and these boys were about to surface so many of them. But he was willing to do this all for her and it made her love him all the more.
Standing up she wrapped max in her arms and walked besides Harry as they headed out, pausing just for a moment to talk with Lilah.
"Will you explain where they are?" Harry asked and she nodded smiling happily as she stroked a hand over Lucas's head.
"I'll handle everything, and I'll get some things sorted with Blair since these little guys will need somewhere to sleep," she paused for a moment thinking, "maybe we can organise one of the new areas."
Harry smiled as he watched the thoughts float across her face but he didn't say anything, leaving her to organise while he took his mate and two new cubs home.
