Sonic Season Finale: My Enemy's Enemy

(A/N: Sorry for the delays. Lot of school stuff to do. Not the greatest chapter, but it leads into the next well enough. Again, I'm sick of letting this story just sit and stagnate, so at this point I want to get it written and posted so I can move on to others.)

Focke-Wulf

Sleet patrolled through the woods carefully, eyes narrowed and observant. He held his sword firmly in his hand and fingered his blaster. Lupe followed behind him, eyes wide and filled with emotions. She could still hardly believe she wasn't in a dream. Sleet paused, frowning, and turned. "What are you gawking at, Lupe?" he demanded.

She was quiet. After a moment she approached him and hugged Sleet tightly. "I just still can't believe you're really here…" she murmured.

Sleet blinked. His gaze softened slightly and he sighed, hugging her awkwardly back. Awkwardness, though, soon gave way to relaxed. He squeezed her tighter then drew back. "I've missed you," he murmured to her gently, nuzzling his sister.

"Are you evil?" she questioned sadly.

"Very," he answered.

"A villain?" she asked.

"I work for whatever side pays," he answered simply. "Should villainy pay better, so be it. Currently villainy pays better."

Lupe nodded. "Who are we searching for?" she asked.

"I'm searching for my teammates. I'm not sure what you're doing," he replied, brushing her off.

"Following you," she answered with a shrug.

"Just stay out of the way," he replied.

"I can hold my own, brother," she replied. Sleet affectionately chuckled.

"Nack! Dingo!" Sleet called out. He listened for any reply. Nothing.

"Why don't you try howling?" Lupe asked.

"Because Dingo is a dingo and Fang is a weasel/wolf hybrid," Sleet answered. "Howling isn't exactly their main means of communication.

Lupe smiled. "First hedgehogs, now dingoes and weasels," she said, shaking her head affectionately and folding her arms. "What am I going to do with you, Sleet? You've certainly come a long way from only interacting with members of your own species."

"Don't give me that," Sleet replied. "Dingo! Nack!"

"If Fang is half wolf, it will be in his instinct to reply," Lupe pointed out with a frown. "At least try it, Sleet!"

Sleet growled low in his throat, giving her a cold look, then cringed, hesitating. He looked ahead, thinking the proposal over, then sighed. He raised his head, howling loudly. He howled again then paused to wait. There was silence. "See, it isn't…" he began.

"Shh," Lupe hushed. Sleet fell silent. Sure enough there came a howl over the wind from somewhere in the distance! "It's your friends!" she exclaimed.

"They are not my friends and that is not Fang's howl regardless," Sleet said, eyes wide. He suddenly looked paler. Lupe started and looked ahead. If that wasn't Nack's howl…

"Oh Ancient Walkers…" she breathed. The siblings exchanged looks. "That was a wolf's howl," she said. Sleet blinked then suddenly charged forward. Lupe was hot on his heels.

"That wasn't Drago's howl either!" he said.

"Drago? What are you talking about?" she demanded. "You know him?"

"I worked with him once. Lupe, it is a long story, I'll tell you later," Sleet brushed off quickly. He howled again. The howl replied. It was getting closer!

Sleet and Lupe raced around a hill then cried out in pain, slamming into someone. Dizzily Sleet shook his head and looked up, gasping then scowling. "Dingo, Nack!" he shot. "So you're the ones who were howling after all!" He couldn't deny he was greatly disappointed. Then again, if it were so it meant Fang was getting in touch with his wolf side better than before.

"Sleet mate, there ya are!" Dingo exclaimed. He blinked passed Sleet at the female wolf. "Who's this Sheila?"

"I'll tell you later," Sleet replied.

"I'm his sister," Lupe answered. Sleet gave her a dirty look.

"Sister?!" the two exclaimed together.

"Long story," Sleet groaned, rolling his eyes hopelessly. Wow he had a lot of explaining to do.

"Fair enough. Later. Sleet, it's a good thing we found yah. If you hadn't been howling we never would have," Nack added.

"Howling? I only howled twice, once calling out to you, once in response," Sleet answered, now confused.

"Huh?" Fang asked. He and Dingo exchanged looks then turned back. "But we didn't howl the first time."

Sleet stiffened. "Then, then it was…" he began.

Just then there was another howl, much louder and closer this time. The canines swiftly turned, looking up at the rocky cliff they were all at the base of. "Whoa, sounds like it's coming from up there," Fang said, pointing.

"Sleet, is it a…" Dingo began, but he trailed off.

"A wolf? We'll soon see," Sleet answered, eyes narrowed. Quickly he leapt onto the cliff and began climbing up it. Lupe followed quickly, not about to be left behind by her brother.

"Sleet mate, wait up!" Dingo called.

"Where is Robotnick?" Sleet questioned Dingo in reply.

"He's at Snively's base. Fang and I came out to search for you," Dingo said. "Ain't far off, surprisin'ly." Sleet nodded then continued up again quickly when they caught up.

For the rest of the climb, Sleet and Lupe hardly paused to look back at the other two canines. They reached the path and began in the direction from which they'd heard the howl. The wolf siblings rounded the small cliff and up ahead spotted a waterfall. They paused a long moment then cautiously started towards it. Sleet stood in front, his hackles raised and protective instinct burning in him. He growled low in his throat. If this was another wolf's territory, things could get… ugly… It couldn't be a wolf, though, it couldn't… He and Drago and the wolf pack were the only ones left… The rest had been… been massacred or driven to extinction long ago…

They reached the waterfall and found, to their surprise, that the path went behind it. Sleet motioned for Lupe to stay put. She nodded. Cautiously Sleet walked behind the falls and saw a cave. He paused a long moment. Finally he approached it and stood in the entrance, hand at his sword just in case. Suddenly a figure appeared and Sleet gasped, paling. "It can't be!" he exclaimed before he could stop himself.

The figure froze. "You're a… You're a wolf…" the other said, stepping into the light. Sleet felt his knees buckle. So was this one, he saw. He gasped, using the wall as a support.

STH

"Sleet?!" Dingo called out. "Come on, mate, where'd ya go?"

"He couldn't have just vanished," Fang said. "Sleet!" Lupe looked back at then then nervously at the place her brother had vanished. She started towards it.

"Don't even think about it. I'm here," Sleet numbly said, stepping out from the shadows and looking shaken.

Lupe paused. "Sleet, what happened? What did you see?" she asked.

Sleet blinked at her and then looked back. "Sonic neglected to tell me that his little friend Tails had gone on an adventure all his very own… And Tails neglected to tell him every detail about every enemy he faced along the way…"

"What do you mean?" Lupe suspiciously asked.

Just then another figure came into sight, and Lupe gasped, covering her mouth as her eyes widened in shock. The others' mouths dropped. "A wolf," Lupe finally managed to breathe numbly.

"But-but I thought…" Nack began. He trailed off.

"Wolves were supposed ta be virtually extinct!" Dingo exclaimed. "Sleet and Drago were… were the only ones left…"

"It seems that besides the Wolf Pack, there was one other," Sleet said, gesturing at the purple wolf behind him who was looking at the Weasel-Wolf Hybrid Nack in disbelief. "This is… is Focke-Wulf the Wolf… He is the one howling…"

"And Sleet must be the first other wolf I've seen in all my days…" Focke-Wulf added gravely.
