Torture
"No Win, no!" Beth squeaked happily while the older blonde lifted her in the air and brought her to a bone crushing hug.
"Why no?" Quinn asked while nuzzling the little's kid and making her squeak happily in a fit of laugher.
"I'm not sleepy!"
"But you have to go to bed." Quinn retorted tenderly to the little girl who pouted and crossed her little arms over her chest in protest. "I make you a deal. You can stay awake if you, little one, convince your sister to sing me a song." Suddenly, Beth jumped off Quinn's arms and ran excitedly to the other room screaming:
"Ray-Ray!" Quinn chuckled when she heard her friend whine annoyingly in the other room.
"Uhg, Beth what now?" Rachel complained raising her head from the cushion it had been resting for the last ten minutes.
Three weeks had passed since the day Quinn and Rachel had had their first fight, and since then the two girls' friendship had only become stronger.
The first two weeks everything had been… perfect. At least from Quinn's point of view. The apartment felt like a home and she felt like if her roommates had become the family she had always dreamed to have. She specially enjoy the time she got to enjoy with Beth and Rachel. Shelby had allowed her to babysit Beth with Rachel, and that little time she was able to spend with the two women she loved the most in the world meant everything to her and made her incredibly happy. It had been perfect… or at least for Quinn.
The last couples of days something felt different. Quinn couldn't help but notice that Rachel seemed distant and sad. Was it her fault? She didn't know, but Rachel obvious distress bothered her immensely. Rachel's happiness meant the word to the blonde and not being capable to make Rachel smile like she did before was eating Quinn alive.
Quinn had her theories about Rachel's behavior, but lately every time she tried to start a conversation with the little diva, Rachel simply dismissed her concern and pretended like nothing was happening. But Quinn knew better.
"You sing me a song Ray-Ray!" Beth cheered happily nudging Rachel with her little hands to get up.
"Common Ray-Bear you have to sing a lullaby to Be-be here or she won't go to sleep." Quinn prompted with a smile, enjoying using a pet name so nauseatingly sweet to address Rachel. One of the reasons she knew Rachel was depressed was because she hadn't heard her sing not even once in almost a week. Quinn knew that singing was Rachel's biggest joy, so she prompted the diva to sing every time she could.
"Not now Beth, I have a headache." Rachel answered almost immediately making the little girl pout and throw a tantrum in defiance. Quinn's brow furrowed in concern. If Rachel denied her little adoptive sister, then nothing will make Rachel sang ever again.
"Pretty please Ray-Ray!" Beth begged with her best puppy eyes.
"Sorry." Rachel said with a sigh glancing away from the girl. When Quinn noticed that Beth was about to burst crying, she picked up the little girl and cradled her within her arms.
"Ray-Bear is not feeling well Be-Be, let's let her rest." Quinn said with a soft smile to the kid.
"But I want a song!" Beth demanded with the biggest pout of the night. Quinn wasn't about to deny her anything.
"What about if I sing to you instead, and then you can go to bed."
"That was not the deal!"
"I know." Quinn laughed softly looking at the little girls' eyes with proud and love."But Ray-Bear is not feeling well. Let me put you into bed, so I can take care of your big sister, ok?" The little girl seemed to think the older blonde's words and then looked at her with apprehension.
"Is Ray-Ray ok?" Beth asked and that made Rachel to perk up, but Quinn jumped in before her and spoke for her.
"Yes, little one, she is just tired." Quinn said smiling to Rachel over Beth's head.
"Promise?"
"I promise. Now, how about a song? Maybe a song of one of your favorite movies?"
"Yay sing me!" Quinn smiled brightly to her birth daughter before glancing to Rachel who was watching her curiously with tired eyes.
Dancing bears,
Painted wings,
Things I almost remember,
And a song someone sings
Once upon a December.
Quinn started singing while swaying the little girl in her arms. Rachel looked up to the blonde when she heard the song of choice and smile softly when she noticed the look of total abandon that Quinn gave to her biological daughter.
Someone holds me safe and warm. Someone holds me safe and warm.
Horses prance through a silver storm.
Figures dancing gracefully
Across my memory...
Horses prance through a silver storm.
Figures dancing gracefully
Across my memory...
Quinn noticed how her song has lewd the little girl quickly into the realm of Morpheus. She smiled and glazed rapidly at Rachel; immediately, she noticed the look of dazedness and fascination of Rachel's features. She wondered what caused that.
Quinn didn't know it, but every time the she sang something stirred inside the diva's stomach. She swore she had never heard Quinn sang so beautifully in High School. Something was different now. Quinn was less cased and repressed. Now she was a free spirit and for some reason every time she sang she brought a smile to Rachel's lips.
She admired the blonde. When was the last time Rachel really let go of everything and just sang? Not long ago, but she found a common denominator in every occasion. Quinn.
Far away, long ago, And a song
Glowing dim as an ember,
Things my heart
Used to know,
Things it yearns to remember...
Someone sings
Once upon a December
When she finished singing, Quinn moved slowly to place the sleeping frame of her daughter into her bed.
"That was beautiful, Quinn." Rachel said seriously while approaching the blonde. Quinn studied the diva with preoccupation.
"How are you feeling?"
"I'm ok. I'm just tired and a little sleepy. I'm sorry about that, Quinn, I shouldn't have dismissed Beth like that." Rachel replied with a frown.
"Don't worry. She loves you Rachel, it doesn't matter if she sees you a little grumpy once in a while." Quinn dismissed with a soft smile, but her words made the frown in Rachel's brows to grow deeper.
"I'm sorry." Quinn sighed and moved to take Rachel's hand and pull her to the couch once again.
"Don't be sorry Rach. I know that you have being worry about something. I just wish you would tell me about it." Quinn said in the softest of tones trying to prompt Rachel to talk to her.
"You know Quinn, you would be a great mom!" She is changing the topic again. Quinn sighed in defeat and smiled to the brunette with understanding.
"I would love to be a mother again." And this time being able to raise her myself.
"Really, how so? How many children would you like to have?" Rachel asked apparently excited about the topic, but Quinn noticed that Rachel wasn't being as giddy as she always was.
"Um, I don't know maybe one or two."
"I would like to have at least five!" Rachel said without hesitation. Quinn's brow quirked with entertainment, when she imagined Rachel and Finn running after five little loud monsters.
"Ha! I can't picture you and Finn fighting to get your monsters to bed at night." Quinn laughed loudly, but Rachel's gasp made her stop immediately and turned to look at her friend in concern. "What is it?"
"Oh God!" Rachel exclaimed flopping to the couch with a thud.
"What?"
"This is so weird! How I didn't notice it before?" Rachel complained exasperated.
"Rachel?"
"When I picture myself getting married, I always see Finn by my side." Rachel said oblivious of the painful look that crossed Quinn's features. "However, Just now, when I picture myself with five kids I notice that… Finn was not there in my picture of a family."
"He wasn't?" Quinn asked in serious surprise.
"No. And I can't even think about it. Finn taking care of children? That is so… not safe." Rachel supplied and Quinn was barely able to stop the scoff that had built in her throat.
"Who do you picture with when you imagine your future family?" Quinn asked gazing away from Rachel. She was afraid that Rachel might see the hope of being her reflected in her eyes.
"I don't know…" Rachel said annoyingly. "Kurt?" Quinn couldn't help but snort at that. Even Kurt has more chances than me.
"Quinn!" Rachel scolded her.
"Sorry." Quinn apologized. She knew that she was letting herself be control by her own insecurities, and she wanted instead focus on Rachel. "Why do you think that is, Rachel?"
"I don't know. Maybe you were right. Maybe I don't love Finn like that." Rachel said with her face scrunched in doubt.
"Or maybe you simply can't picture Finn as a father yet because you don't see him mature enough for the role yet." Rachel was left speechless and gawked at her friend in disbelieve.
"I don't understand. Why do you defend him? I thought you didn't like him."
"But you do." Quinn said with a little smile. "Rach; although, I don't think Finn deserves you, I know you love him. And I have learned that people should fight for love, not against it."
Rachel stayed quiet for a while considering Quinn's words.
"Have you ever fallen in love?" Rachel asked looking at Quinn with inquiring eyes.
"Yes, I am, very much so." Quinn grinned happily to her secret love. Quinn saw a spark flash on Rachel's eyes. Apparently her confession had woken up the diva's curiosity and it had made Rachel lighten up a bit.
"Wait, you still are? With whom?" Rachel asked with real intrigue and excitement. It worked like a distraction and after a long time Quinn had finally see a spark of life back on Rachel.
"I don't think I should tell you that." Quinn shook her head with amusement when she noticed Rachel's pout.
"Why not?"
"Because if I tell you, you probably won't let it go" Quinn smirked knowingly.
"Give me a clue at least." Rachel begged giving Quinn her best puppy eyes.
"If I give you clues, you will annoy me all the time, but you will never guess."
"Do I know her? I mean… I'm guessing this person is a woman." Rachel said a little embarrassed by her words.
"Yes, she is and… I… yeah I think you might know her." Quinn said with confidence. It was strange. Quinn wasn't sure when it happened, but at some point lying had become almost her second nature. She didn't like it. She felt weak and she felt that she was betraying the people around her. She hated it, but she wasn't strong enough. At least not yet.
"And why haven't you told her anything?" Rachel asked with curiosity.
"She is straight, Rachel."
"Oh…bummer."
"Yeah."
"I bet you could turn any girl gay if you try to Quinn" Rachel smiled reassuringly.
"Ha! Is that so?"
"Yes, I'm mostly confident about it."
"Hum…" For some reason her words struck Quinn painfully. If only it were true. She took a deep breath and forced her inner walls to climb once again. She couldn't let Rachel see how much her words had hurt her.
"Thanks for the vote of confidence, Rach. But I don't…" Quinn stopped and thought what she was about to say. She looked at Rachel eyes and she felt her own heart skip a beat. "I don't need that person to love me back. I love her and even though she doesn't love me, if she is happy, I'm happy. Seeing her smile is the most important thing in my life."
"Wow… you must really love her." Rachel said awkwardly diverting her eyes away from the blonde ones. For some reason the intensity in Quinn's eyes had made her feel uncomfortable. For a small second she thought that Quinn was talking about her.
"With all my heart." Quinn said smiling languidly to Rachel. With determination, Quinn extended her hand and laid it softly against Rachel's cheek prompting the smaller girl to look at her once again. When their eyes met, Rachel saw the concern in Quinn's eyes and she felt herself drawn in shame and uncertainty. She didn't want to involve Quinn in her stupid problems and insecurities. Quinn had already too much in her plate to be worried about her.
"Rach, what is going on? Why are you so sad?" The blonde asked with a concern look. "Please don't push me away."
"Quinn…"
"You haven't laughed in days and you even haven't sing once this week. I know something is wrong. Please tell me what's wrong." Quinn insisted and she clearly recognized the inner struggle Rachel was having before her. Rachel didn't want her to know because she was ashamed of herself. But what would make her feel like that? What would make her feel… oh…. Could it be?
"I…"Rachel stuttered trying to hold the tears that stung her eyes.
"Sing to me Rachel…" Quinn said quietly understanding finally the inner turmoil inside of Rachel.
"Not now, please Quinn… just don't."
xxxxxxxxxx-xxxxxxxxx
With your cherry lips and golden curls
You could make grown men gasp when you go walking past
In the stage of Rusty's Jukebox Meal, Quinn Fabray sang next to Santana and Eric one of the waiters. Quinn was the lead and the customers in the dinner had their eyes glued to the beautiful blonde on the stage.
And in your hot pants and high heels
They could not believe that such a body was for real
It seemed like rainbows would appear
Whenever you came near the clouds would disappear
Because you look just like a girl
Your baby blues would flash and suddenly a spell was cast
Sitting in one of the booths was Rachel watching the blonde perform lost in her own thoughts. With her head leaning on her arms Rachel couldn't help but gawk to the beautiful ex-cheerleader dancing and singing on the little stage.
I bet that if Quinn auditions to a role on a play or a movie, she would be hired immediately because of her talent and beauty. Rachel thought absently while tilting her head as she watched Quinn with appreciation.
You're such a delicate boy You hold a candle in your heart
In the hysterical realm
Of an emotional landslide
In physical terms
To shine the light on hidden parts
You make the whole world wanna dance
You bought yourself a second chance
Rachel knew that Quinn was worried about her. She didn't wanted the blonde to be concern about her; however, deep down she wanted to lean on Quinn, and tell her everything. She wanted to be held by the blonde while she cried her insecurities out of her heart. She needed the comfort.
Since when she became dependent of Quinn? This isn't right! I'm suppose to let go of Finn and stand up by myself to grow up, not just get attached to someone else instead, especially not Quinn. The blonde would be so disappointed on Rachel if she found out the reason of her insecurities. That was why Rachel had been avoiding Quinn. She didn't want to be an extra burden on the blonde's back. She needed to face this situation by herself, and yet every time she thought about it she felt so sad and disappointed on herself that she wanted to curl down on the floor and cry herself to sleep.
So stupid. So weak.
Go baby go go
We're right behind you
Go baby go go
Yeah, we're looking at you
Go baby go go
Oh ,we're right behind you
Go baby go baby
Yeah, we're right behind you
Go baby go baby
Oh, we're right behind you
Go baby go baby
Yeah, we're looking at you
Go baby go baby
Oh, we're right behind you
Go baby go baby
Yeah, we're looking at you
Yeah, we're looking at you
Go baby go go
Oh, we're right behind you
"So this is what Santana meant when she told me you have been avoiding the stage." A soft voice sounded behind Rachel which made her jump on her seat. Rachel turned around and saw a grinning Kurt leaning on the back of her booth. "Tell your best friend was wrong, sweetie."
"I don't know what you are talking about." Rachel shrugged nonchalantly and moved out of the booth.
"Hey miss!" A client drew her attention and Rachel turned towards him.
"Yes, sir?"
"Could you do me a favor and give this to that pretty blonde you work with?" The man extended her a piece of paper, but Rachel raised her hands dismissively.
"If you want to leave a phone number, you can leave it in the jar that is in front of the front counter. Her name is Quinn." Rachel signaled to the counter and to five different jars that had the name of the three friends and of two of the guys. Quinn's jar was the fullest of all. Of course it was. Quinn is gorgeous.
Rachel nodded and move away from the man to sneak out to the kitchen. The kitchen had turned in some sort of refugee when she worked in the dinner. The back of the kitchen, where they storage some of the things that didn't need to be in the fridge was the loneliest place in it, so it was perfect to go to when she needed silence and peace.
"Well, hello there pretty lady." A soft voice called behind her and Rachel turned to meet the beautiful hazel gaze of her new found friend. "We are cleaning to close for the night."
"Quinn… hi." Rachel said feeling awkward. Quinn took her time to study with her eyes the frame of her tiny friend. She was able to pick up Rachel's discomfort with a glimpse. Quinn let out a deep sigh and smiled with understanding while walking towards the singer.
Rachel shoulders grew tenser with every step closer of the blonde. It was amazing how her body reacted to the blonde. It was almost like when they were in High School and Rachel was able to feel the blonde glare from several feet away, and how the shrill that climbed up her spine let her know when she and the blonde were in the same room. Those reactions were mostly from anticipation and yes, a small amount of fear as well. Now, she felt her body react in a similar way, but it wasn't caused from fear or caution, it was mainly provoked by the overwhelming feeling of exposure she felt whenever the hazel eyes of the blonde fell on her.
It was like Quinn's eyes were able to strip her from every wall and look deep down her soul. It made her feel vulnerable and exposed, and yet she wasn't displeased by those violating feelings. Instead, she found comfort knowing that Quinn was able to read her so easily. In a strange way it was a confirmation of the strong bond they had created. Nevertheless, now she feared the blonde's ability to see right through her since she didn't want the blonde to know her stupid insecurities.
When Quinn stopped right in front of her, almost invading her personal space, Rachel felt her knees tremble in weakness and her eyes get moist with unshed tears. How does she do that? Rachel wondered diverting her eyes away from the hazel mist of green that were Quinn's eyes.
"You really aren't going to tell me?" Quinn asked ducking her gaze trying to find the chocolate orbs of the diva.
"How do you do that?" Rachel voiced her inner struggle. Quinn at first stopped to try to figure out what Rachel was referring to, but when she saw the slight trembling of exposed knees and the unusual brightness in profound brown eyes, Quinn smiled reassuringly.
"The same you do that to me, Rachel." Quinn chuckled when she saw Rachel frown in confusion. "We had been through enough to know the best and the worst from the other. I can see through your walls just like you do through mine. Although, I'll admit that mine are thicker."
"Which is unfair! I'm starting to think you are a better actress that I am." Rachel complained with a pout.
"Well… you are a better singer." Rachel slapped her playfully on her arm and Quinn corrected herself. "The best singer."
Quinn watched how Rachel furrowed her brows in a mix of uncertainty and fear. The ex-cheerleader sighed loudly feeling how Rachel grew overwrought once again.
"Rach… I know why you are so upset." Quinn said with softness, but her words startled the diva.
"You do?"
"Two words…Funny Girl." Quinn said easily and she watched how Rachel broke slowly before her.
It had been over a month since her audition and she hadn't heard anything from the directors or casting members. With every passing day her disillusion grew stronger. The hope of being called for the role grew slim and weak, and with it her self-pity and embarrassment were winning the battle.
She felt incompetent and stupid. She didn't want to feel that way, but she was weak and the disappointment was too strong for her ego. She knew she was acting like a spoiled little kid, so she decided to keep quiet and let her own mood turn back to chipper with time. She didn't count with the constant concern from Quinn.
She knew that Quinn had noticed the change in her mood, and she cursed herself for making the blonde worry about her when she was already dealing with so much. She wanted to dismiss Quinn's concern and berate herself for inefficacy on keeping the blonde at bay, but when she heard Quinn speak out the reasons of her inner turmoil Rachel couldn't hold it anymore.
With an exasperated growl Rachel threw herself to the blonde's arms. Quinn was caught off guard and was pushed to the ground while holding a crying Rachel in her arms.
"Oh Rachel… why did you didn't want to talk about it." Quinn said while rubbing a reassuring hand over the diva's back.
"I didn't want to be a burden for you." Rachel said while sobbing.
"You will never be a burden for me Rachel. I…I…" Quinn doubted her next words. Could she really say it knowing that Rachel wouldn't think of it beyond a friendly gesture? "I love you Rachel, you are my best friend." There I said it! Quinn was aware of the light tremble on her voice. She had finally said it aloud to Rachel. She felt like a big part of the burden she had put on her heart finally felt at peace.
When she felt Rachel hold around her waist tightened, Quinn was barely able to suppress the whimper that had wanted to escape her.
"I love you too, Quinn." Rachel said now more calm while she kept her face hidden within the blonde's neck.
Quinn bit the inside of her mouth roughly tasting the foul metal flavor of blood in her mouth. Now she was the one fighting the tears on her eyes. The words hurt more that she would ever imagine. She thought she would feel happy if Rachel said those particular words to her, but she was wrong. It hurts. It hurts so much! Her heart was practically screaming at her that she didn't want that kind of love, that it wanted the real love.
If this wasn't torture, she didn't know what it was.
"Quinn… I-"
"I know you feel disappointed Rachel, but you shouldn't. You gave your best on your audition and if they couldn't see the awesomeness of the future Tony winner Rachel Berry, is their lost. They will appear as the idiots who first rejected you when E makes a show dedicated to your story." Quinn said trying to release the stress of the situation and to ease her own heart. Her voiced sounded hoarse and dry, but she heard and felt the chuckle of Rachel against her shoulder.
"You're probably right about that."
"Please Rachel, don't underrate yourself out of one audition. You are a star. I know it. Everybody that had ever heard you sing knows it, and you should know it as well." Quinn said easily after clearing her voice of any sign of remorse and pain.
"Ok." Rachel felt herself relax in Quinn's embrace. She felt happy, protected and in home. She was so happy of having Quinn as her friend. She let out a deep sigh and pressed herself harder against Quinn.
"What am I supposed to do now, Quinn?" Rachel asked in doubt. Quinn slowly pulled apart to lock eyes with Rachel's.
"Sing." Quinn said seriously and let a mischievous smile. Quinn quickly took out her cell phone and searched for something on it. "You gotta keep singing Rachel." Quinn said and pushed play to her music player. (Quinn – Rachel – Santana – All)
Listen as your day unfolds
Challenge what the future holds
Try and keep your head up to the sky
Quinn began singing and with it she drew the unweaving attention of the diva. Quinn took her hand and made her stand up from her place.
Lovers, they may cause your tears
Go ahead release your fears
Stand up and be counted
Don't be ashamed to cry
You gotta be, you gotta be bad
You gotta be bold, you gotta be wiser
You gotta be hard, you gotta be tough
You gotta be stronger, you gotta be cool
You gotta be calm, you gotta stay together
All I know, all I know, love will save the day
The ex-cheerleader guided Rachel to the door that lead to the front and smiled happily to the young singer that followed her enthusiastically.
You gotta…
Feel the rain on your skin
When the blonde opened the door she changed the bit of the song, singing louder and walking around the tables earning the attention of Santana, Kurt and the other waiters in the diner.
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
The dinner was empty now, and Rusty stood watching the blonde serenade amusedly behind the counter. With every line Quinn was baiting Rachel to sing with her, to take over the song and let herself go after days of stress and depression. Rachel couldn't help the reaction of her own body. It was screaming at her to sing along the blonde, and yet she was hypnotized by her. She was smiling broadly while watching the blonde swing her hips and make a little dance that was irking her to let go.
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
The rest is still unwritten
Santana, who was watching the blonde sing like the others, decided to join in. She hurriedly moved next to her friend and swung the blonde in the air before resuming the song.
Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Santana sang to Quinn and the blonde decided to join in.
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
The rest is still unwritten
The waiters joined in and started singing the choir, while Quinn approached the Jew girl and hugged her from behind. Quinn and Rachel watched happily how the other members of the dinner and Kurt resumed the song while dancing around the place. Quinn leaned over and whispered softly to Rachel a last stanza of encouraging.
Time asks no questions, it goes on without you
Leaving you behind if you can't stand the pace
The world keeps on spinning
Can't stop it if you try to
The best part is dangerous staring you in the face
Enthusiastically, Rachel released herself from Quinn's grasp and jumped to the counter of the dinner drawing everybody's attention.
Staring at the blank page before you Reaching for something in the distance
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find
So close you can almost taste it
Release your inhibitiooooooons!
Quinn laughed and caught her when Rachel jumped from the counter. This was her Rachel. The Rachel who sang, who laughed and enjoyed life with all her might. This was the Rachel she loved.
Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
You gotta…
Feel the rain on your skin
You gotta be bold…
No one else can feel it for you
You gotta be bad
Only you can let it in
You gotta be wise
No one else, no one else
You'll never sad
Can speak the words on your lips
You gotta be hard
Drench yourself in words unspoken
not too too hard
Live your life with arms wide open
All I know is love will save the day Oh, yeah, yeah
Today is where your book begins
The rest is still unwritten
The rest is still unwritten
The rest is still unwritten
While the others sang around them, Quinn and Rachel found themselves again together. Overwhelmed by gratitude and oh so many feelings, Rachel stood over her tip toes and kissed Quinn on her cheek.
Quinn blushed profoundly, but sneaked out an awkward smile for Rachel.
"Feeling better?"
"Yeah… Thank you Quinn."
"Thank you, Rachel." Quinn retorted while giving emphasis on her words.
"Me? For what?"
"For allowing me to see the most blindly beautiful smile on Earth again, Rachel." Quinn smiled and Rachel blushed at her words.
"Oh you are a smooth talker." Rachel reprimanded and gave the blonde a stern look.
"You don't like it?" Quinn asked playfully, but instead of answering in the same teasing mood, Rachel simply moved forward and wrapped her small hands around the blonde's waist and pulled her into a hug.
"I think I do." Rachel said while resting her head over the blonde's chest. "I love you Quinn."
Quinn froze in her place when she felt Rachel leaning against her. Those three words again. They were really a torture.
"I love you too, Rach."
A sweet and magical torture that she wished to keep enjoying the rest of her life.
