"How's your ankle?" Merlin asked Skylar as he brought her some breakfast in bed.
"It doesn't hurt to much, just every now and then when I move it. Thank you for bringing this up by the way."
"It's no problem, and well that's good then. Anyway I better get going, Arthur's going out on patrol and guess who's got to get everything ready." Merlin joked, "I'll see you later anyway." He kissed Skylar's head then walk off to sort out the patrol.
Skylar ate her food while she thought of spells that might heal her ankle quicker. She knew this was going to be a long day.
Gaius bought Skylar some books to read and some parchment so she could write and read to stop her going completely insane being stuck in bed all day. Skylar however decided to spend the day practicing sneaky spells she knew to entertain herself. She created small fire dragons that flew round the room, and knights made from the parchment to fight the dragon off, of course the fire dragon beat the paper knights, but she enjoyed the show.
The day went slow as Skylar had guessed and when she became bored of playing with small amounts of magic she decided to actually read some of the books. A lot of the books were on medicine's and healing potions, the odd book would have a healing spell in which interested Skylar as she couldn't believe Uther allowed these book's in Camelot but then again maybe he hand't read them all. She tried out one spell on the cut on her head, the spell was meant to clear the cut into a tinny scar. She felt her head after doing the spell and as she touched her head all she felt was a tinny indented line in her cuts place. She kept reading to see what other spells there were but had no luck finding one to help her ankle. As evening came round Skylar had fallen asleep. She was soon woken though when she heard people rushing around in the other room.
Skylar could hear Gaius giving orders to people to fetch things, someone must be injured. She was curious as to who it was.
"I need water, lost of water!" Gaius said to someone, his words laced with panic.
Why was Gaius so worried? Then Skylar remembered the patrol, was it Arthur that had been hurt? Skylar listened out to see if she could hear who it was. She began to feel worried.
"Here hold this. Sir Gwaine see where Sir Lancelot is with that water-" Gaius was saying.
"I'm here, sorry I took awhile." Sir Lancelot said sounding out of breath.
"Cloths I need Cloths!" Gaius sounded so panicked
"Here, will he be okay?" Wait that was Arthur Skylar thought as she hear the prince's low yet saddened voice. So if Arthur wasn't hurt who was?
"I can't be sure. I've bandaged his wound but he lost a lot of blood." Gaius replied.
Skylar needed to know who they were on about, she knew it was a he and she knew it must have been someone from the patrol. She forced herself out of the bed and winced a bit as her bad foot touched the floor, she did her best to walk over to the door but she was more limping than walking. She finally reached the door and opened it. She saw some of the knight's she knew standing around the room, she saw Gaius looking someone over on the patients bed but he was in the way so she couldn't see who it was. She also saw Arthur stood on the other side of the bed.
Gaius moved then and Skylar's heart dropped as she saw who was lying on the bed looking paler than ever with blood stained clothes. It was Merlin.
Skylar didn't care how much her ankle hurt or protested against her movements she ran as best she could to Merlin's side.
"Skylar you're supposed to be in bed." Gaius said as he saw her run to Merlin's side.
Skylar didn't say anything she just knelt down by Merlin's bed, tears forming in her eyes. The knight's left but Arthur stayed as did Gaius.
Gaius moved and pulled Skylar away from Merlin and into a hug, she didn't protest she just hugged Gaius back and cried into his shoulder. The room was silent yet filled with so much sadness. Merlin looked so little, so pail lying there so innocently. His breaths were ragged and very slow. It worried Arthur so much to see Merlin like this. Arthur would never admit it out loud but Merlin was his friend, his best friend even. It was Merlin that was always there for Arthur, Merlin who always helped Arthur, Merlin who always made Arthur feel better. Merlin was like a brother to Arthur, so for Arthur to see Merlin lying there so close to death was one of the worst things Arthur had ever seen. Arthur knew that even though Merlin was home it did not mean Merlin would survive.
They had been attacked by rebels on the patrol, Arthur and the knight's had fought them off but there was one hidden up a hill with a bow and arrow. Merlin had spotted the rebel but by the time he had done so the rebel had shot at Arthur, Merlin used his magic to stop the arrow but with all his focus on that he didn't see the rebel coming up from behind, the rebel that Arthur had turned around to see stab Merlin in the stomach. Arthur had ran over and killed the rebel and Sir Leon dealt with the rebel on the hill. Once the rebel that had stabbed Merlin was dead Arthur had knelt down next to Merlin just in time to see Merlin's eyes close as he fell into unconsciousness.
Now Arthur stood staring at Merlin who was still unconscious, he just wished Merlin would wake up. Arthur looked over to Gaius and Skylar who were still hugging. Gaius's face looked so sad, Arthur had never seen Gaius look so devastated in his entire life, but Arthur understood why Gaius looked like that, Merlin wasn't just his ward, he was like a son to Gaius. Arthur couldn't see Skylar's face as it was burred in Gaius's shoulder but he could hear her sobs. Arthur couldn't stay any longer.
"If there's any change send for me." Arthur left after saying that.
The night passed with no change, Merlin was still as pail and was still struggling to stay alive while Gaius sat by his side hoping for Merlin to wake up. Skylar had stopped crying half way through the night but she didn't say a word, she just sat silently on the other side of Merlin's bed. Gaius looked to the window to see the sun rising up.
"I should go do my rounds." He said in a whispered voice. Skylar looked to him and nodded. "If anything changes send for me right away, I'll be in the lower town, okay?" Skylar nodded again and then watched as Gaius packed his stuff for his rounds. Once he finished packing he walked over to the door, stopping before opening it to look back to Merlin, Gaius didn't want to leave but he had to and so after a few moment's more he finally left.
Skylar was left in silence as tears formed in her eyes again.
"Merlin, I don't even know where to start, I love you, I don't know you very well and most of what I know about you is stories and things people have told me but I don't know you properly, that's why you need to live, I need to be able to get to know you. I was six when my farther told me about you and Hunith, I didn't full understand but I was so happy I did know that one day I'd find you, and I did. Your nothing like I imagined though. Your so much kinder, so much happier and so much more caring than I could ever have imagined. You do so much for this kingdom and to be honest I don't know how you cope with it all, but I know your strong, I know you can pull through this, please for me. You don't deserve to die. I haven't even had chance to find out all the things you enjoy, all the things your scared of and all the things a sister should know about her brother. I didn't spend years of my life imagining you and thinking of you and trying to find you for you to be taken from me as soon as I find you, that's not fair, so please Merlin, please fight for your life, I need you to live." Skylar couldn't stop the tears from falling, they ran down her face one by one.
Skylar rested her head on Merlin's chest and picked up his hand to hold in hers and she cried silently into his chest, silently begging him to live, to wake up, to do anything to show he was holding on and that he'd be okay. She felt her magic then rise inside her, it gave her an idea. She lifted her head up and tried her best to focus on the healing spell that had healed her head wound, she whispered the words as she lay a hand over Merlin's wound. He hand began to glow and she said the words again but louder. He hand glowed brighter and she said the words once more and her eyes flashed bright gold before going back to their dark brown. She looked down to Merlin to see him shift a little, he didn't wake but he had moved, that had to be a good sign. Skylar jumped up to go and send someone for Gaius, but as she turned to the door she stopped dead, her smile dropping from her face and her body began to shake with fear as she looked into the man's eyes. She couldn't read his face completely but she could tell he was angry and very shocked.
"You have magic!" He said a little louder than speaking level. Skylar stood still making no sound, she was to terrified to do anything.
Her life was now in the man's hand's, and no not any man, no her life was in the king's hand's.
Uther stared at Skylar, shock and anger written all over his face. "Guards!" He called not taking his eyes of Skylar. Skylar felt tears form in her eyes, she knew why he had called the guards, she'd been caught using magic and she knew the laws in Camelot said about magic, she knew the consequences for using magic, she knew exactly what would happen to her.
Two guards entered. "Take her to the dungeons." Uther's voice held no emotion.
Skylar, still unable to move, watch as the two guards walk toward her grabbing both her arms in a firm grip and pulling her out the room.
"Wait!" The guards stopped and looked to Uther for instructions.
"Well speak." Uther said with a harsh tone to his voice.
"Please just send for Gaius, Merlin need's him." Skylar hoped the king would listen to her. Her fate was sealed but Merlin had a chance at surviving and if the spell she had used worked then Gaius might be able to help Merlin wake up.
"Take her." Was all Uther said. Skylar's heart dropped. He hadn't listened to her.
Skylar was dragged off the the dungeons. She tried her best to hold her tears in as the guards dragged her along. She was in so much shock with everything she didn't even notice when she was taken past Gwen and Sir Lancelot or when Sir Leon asked if she was okay as she went past him before finally being taken downstairs to the cells. She was shoved in a cell and the door locked behind her as she fell the the ground crying. What had she done? Why was she so stupid?
After Gwen and Lancelot had seen Skylar be dragged past them by guards they had ran to tell Arthur but Sir Leon had apparently seen her too and he had got to Arthur first. They all followed Arthur down to the council chambers where they found Uther.
"Arthur." Uther seemed completely calm.
"Why did you send the girl to the cells?" Arthur tried to hide the anger in his voice but it was more obvious then he thought.
"Guards close the doors and wait outside, alone with the rest of you." Uther said standing up.
"No they can stay." Arthur said.
"Guards." Arthur could tell Uther was getting annoyed at Arthur now by his tone of voice. The guards left and closed the doors but Gwen, Lancelot and Leon all stayed behind Arthur.
"What is it to you why I sent her to the cells?" Uther started to raise his voice.
Arthur did have a good enough answer for that, he knew he couldn't give Skylar's identity away but he needed to save her somehow. "She's a young girl, what harm could she possible bring to you."
"She has magic Arthur, I caught her using it in Gaius's chambers!" Uther shouted.
"That doesn't mean she's evil!"
"People who use magic are evil, they will stop at nothing to destroy us, you know the rules." Uther's face began to go red with rage.
"So that's it your just going to execute her?" Arthur couldn't believe how blind his farther had become because of his views on magic.
"You know the rules as does everyone else in Camelot." Uther turned away from Arthur. "Now leave, all of you, Leave!"
Arthur turned and slammed the doors open making everyone jump a little as he walked off to his chambers. Gwen, Lancelot and Leon followed.
"What are we going to do?" Leon asked as they entered Arthur's room.
"We could break her out?" Lancelot suggested.
"Don't be stupid if we got caught we'd be killed for treason." Leon said.
"Not if I do it." Everyone turned to Arthur. "He won't execute his only son, I'm the only one who can take the thrown after him, if I get caught I'll be put in the cells for month at worse punishment."
Gwen looked worried, "Are you sure?" Arthur nodded.
"Do you need help with the plans?" Lancelot asked.
"It's okay, I know this castle well and I know my farther's routine even better, I'll do it alone, you may leave." Leon and Lancelot nodded before leaving.
"Arthur please be careful." Gwen said walking over to Arthur.
"I always am." He smiled to her and pulled her into a hug kissing her head.
