The Sabrina Moore Chronicles Chapter 9: Abandon All Hope
OVERPASS - DAY
Underneath the lowest of these highways an old man got out of an expensive car, dug a hole in the dirt and gravel, buried a box, and stood up.
"Mr. Pendleton, I presume." A voice said. The Pendleton turned around to see a man who wasn't there before. "Name's Crowley." He said.
"In my negotiations I was, uh, dealing with a very young, attractive, uh, lady."
"Yes. I know. But you, piggy bank, you are a big fish, and I wanted to do you the honor of sealing this deal personally."
"She said the deal would be sealed with a kiss."
"That's right." Crowley said. Pendleton stared and Crowley grinned.
"No, I mean, she said—I don't—"
"Your choice. You can cling to six decades of deep-seated homophobia, or give it up and get a complete bailout for your bank's ridiculous incompetence." Crowley was up in Pendleton's personal space now.
"There are just things that I—"
"Going once."
"I don't think so—"
"Going twice."
"All right! All right." Crowley pulled Pendleton in. "No—" Crowley kissed him anyway. Castiel was observing from a distance, on the phone.
"Got him." He said into the phone. Crowley released Pendleton. Castiel spoke into the phone. "The demon Crowley is making a deal; even as we speak, it's—going—down."
LAKESIDE - DAY
Dean was on the phone. Sam leaned against the car, back to Dean.
"Going down? Right. Okay, Huggy Bear, just don't lose him." Dean said. Sam and Sabrina turned to look at Dean.
"I won't lose him." Castiel said.
UNDERPASS - DAY
"Damn you." Pendleton said. Pendleton turned to walk back to his car.
"Enjoy the obscene wealth. See you in ten years." Crowley said. Crowley fiddled with a cell phone while he walked, then vanished. Castiel followed him, vanishing as well.
MANSION - DAY
Castiel was still on the phone.
"I followed him. It's not far, but—it's layered in Enochian warding magic." Castiel said. The wall was covered in blue-white geometric designs. "I can't get in."
"That's okay, you did great. We'll take it from here." Dean said.
MANSION - DAY
Crowley poured himself a drink with lemon and watched a black-and-white film involving Nazis.
OUSIDE MANSION - NIGHT
A young woman in evening dress approached the gate and presses a button on the intercom.
"Hello?"
"Hello. My car broke down. I—I need some help."
"I'll be down in a minute." The young woman turned around to wait; it's Jo Harvelle. The gate swung open and two men approach.
"Evening, pretty lady. Get yourself on in here." The first man said.
"I just need to make a call." Jo said.
"You don't need to call anyone, baby." The first man said. He glanced at his partner. "We're the only help you're ever gonna need."
"You know what? I think I should wait by my car." Jo said. Jo turned to go. The first man grabbed her shoulder; his eyes went black.
"We said, get your ass in here." Jo shook him loose and flattened him. The second man was stabbed through the neck with what must be Ruby's knife; Sam was holding it. He stabbed the first man too.
"Nice work, Jo." Dean said.
"Thanks." Jo said. Dean handed Jo a bag. She pulled out wire cutters.
"Okay. Shall we?" She asked.
MANSION - NIGHT
Crowley was still watching his film when the electricity cut out. He left the room.
"It's Crowley, right?" Sam asked.
"So. The Hardy Boys finally found me. Took you long enough." Sam was holding Ruby's knife and Dean a shotgun. Jo was not in sight. Crowley approached, stopping when he saw his rug was rumpled. He looked underneath; a devil's trap had been drawn on the bottom of the rug. "Do you have any idea how much this rug cost?" Two men grabbed Sam and Dean from behind, disarming them and pinning their arms. Crowley held up the Colt. "This is it, right? This is what it's all about." Crowley aimed the gun at Dean, then adjusted his aim and shot both men. "We need to talk. Privately." Crowley said. He was about to turn around but looked at the two. "Shouldn't there be three of you?" Sam and Dean exchanged looks. "Come on out love." Sam and Dean looked confused then Sabrina stepped out.
"I thought you wanted to stay behind?" Dean whispered.
"I did." Sabrina whispered back. Crowley smirked.
"Mind the carpet, love." He said. Aya ran around the carpet and jumped at Crowley who caught her in a hug. Sam and Dean looked at each other utterly confused and concerned. Aya kissed Crowley's cheek with a big smile.
" 'ello father."
"Hello darling." Crowley said back with a fond smile.
"Excuse me?" Dean asked his voice slightly cracking in shock. Aya looked back at the boys with a sheepish smile.
"Right… sorry. I never did tell you who my father was."
"H-he's your father?" Sam asked, pointing. Aya nodded.
"Really love, you should've told them." Crowley said.
"And the reaction would be worse than now telling them I was the daughter of the king of the crossroads."
"Which makes you the Princess." Crowley said. Aya chuckled.
"Sabrina's getting creeped out."
"Almost forgot about your situation, sorry love." The two stopped hugging and Sabrina came back out. She took a step back from him. "Don't worry, love." Crowley led the three into another room.
"What the hell is this?" Dean asked.
"Do you know how deep I could have buried this thing?" Crowley asked. He waved a hand; the door slammed shut. "There's no reason you or anyone should know this even exists, except that I told you."
"You told us." Sam said.
"Rumors, innuendo, sent out on the grapevine."
"Why? Why tell us anything?" Crowley aimed at Dean again.
"I want you to take this thing to Lucifer and empty it into his face.
"Uh-huh, okay, and why exactly would you want the devil dead?" Dean asked.
"It's called—" Crowley put the gun down. "Survival. Well, I forgot you two at best are functioning morons—
"You're functioning...morons..." Dean said.
"Smooth." Aya muttered.
"Lucifer isn't a demon, remember?" Crowley asked. "He's an angel. An angel famous for his hatred of humankind. To him, you're just filthy bags of pus. If that's the way he feels about you, what can he think about us?"
"But he created you." Sam said.
"To him, we're just servants. Cannon fodder. If Lucifer manages to exterminate humankind, we're next. So, help me, huh? Let's all go back to simpler, better times, back to when we could all follow our natures. I'm in sales, dammit! So what do you say if I give you this thing, and you go kill the devil?" Crowley held out the Colt, handle first. Dean and Sam glance at each other. Crowley wiggled the gun. Sam hesitantly reached out to take it.
"Great." Sam said.
"Great." Crowley repeated.
"You wouldn't happen to know where the devil is, by chance, would you?" Sam asked.
"Thursday, birdies tell me, there's an appointment in Carthage, Missouri." Sam glanced at Dean and nodded.
"Great." Sam put the barrel between Crowley's eyes and pulled the trigger. It clicked. Sam stared, surprised; Crowley stared back, impassive.
"Oh, yeah, right, you'll probably need some more ammunition." Crowley went into his desk.
"Oh, uh, excuse me for asking, but aren't you kind of signing your own death warrant?" Dean asked. "I mean, what happens to you if we go up against the devil and lose?"
"Number one, he's going to wipe us all out anyway. Two, after you leave here, I go on an extended vacation to all points nowhere. And three, how about you don't miss, okay! Morons!" Crowley threw something at Dean, who caught and opened it; bullets for the Colt. Dean looked up; Crowley was gone. Sam sighed.
"Seriously that's your dad?' Dean asked turning to Aya.
"Such a sweetie isn't he?" Aya said with a smile.
"You couldn't mention this guy was your dad earlier?"
"I'm a good daughter, I wouldn't just give him away like that, besides I knew you'd find him and I also knew you wouldn't be able to hurt him."
"You were that confident? Why did you show up then?"
"I wanted to see him." Aya said looking at Dean like it was obvious. Sam sighed again. Dean shook his head.
BOBBY'S HOUSE - NIGHT
There were five full shot glasses were in a row next to a row of three upside-down shot glasses, a gap, and a full shot glass. Another glass was placed upside-down in the gap. Jo drank from a beer bottle. Ellen drained the fifth and put it back upside-down.
"All right, big boy." Ellen said to Castiel who was across from her.
"Well." Castiel said. He drained all five of his in a row. Ellen stared. "I think I'm starting to feel something." Jo gawked and grinned.
Sam and Dean were sitting at opposite sides of Bobby's desk, both with beer bottles.
"It's gotta be a trap, right?" Sam asked.
"Sam Winchester, having trust issues with a demon. Well, better late than never." Dean said.
"Thank you again for your continued support."
"You're welcome." They clinked bottles and drank. "You know, trap or no trap, we got a snowball's chance, we gotta take it, right?"
"Yeah, I suppose."
"Besides, I'm not sure it is a trap. Check it out. I mean, Carthage is lit up like a Christmas tree with Revelation omens. And look at this." Dean pushed some papers at Sam. "There's been six missing persons reported, in town, since Sunday. I think the devil's there."
"Okay."
"Look, when you think about it...you can't come with." Sam rolled his eyes.
"Dean."
"Look, I go against Satan and screw the pooch, okay. We've lost a game piece. That we can take. But if you're there, then we are handing the devil's vessel right over to him. That's not smart."
"Since when have we ever done anything smart?"
"I'm serious, Sam."
"So am I. Haven't we learned a damn thing? If we're gonna do this, we're gonna do it together." Dean and Sam looked at each other for a long moment. Dean looked away first.
"Okay. But it's a stupid frigging idea." Dean looked past Sam, attention caught by Castiel, Ellen, Sabrina, and Jo. Sam looked too.
"Boy, talk about stupid ideas." Sam said.
"Good God. True, that." Dean said. Dean got up and went over to the refrigerator, where Sabrina was rummaging, rear end prominent. She turned around and Dean was right there. "Hey." Dean said.
"Hey." Sabrina said.
"So. Dangerous mission tomorrow. Guess it's time to eat, drink, and, you know, make merry." Dean said.
"Are you giving me the last-night-on-earth speech?"
"What?"
"What?"
"No." They laughed. "If I was, would, uh, would that work?" Sabrina moved forward and kissed him.
"No but me being your girlfriend would." Dean chuckled and kissed her again.
"Everybody get in here! It's time for the lineup. Usual suspects in the corner." Bobby called. Sam came in, then Ellen.
"Oh come on, Bobby. Nobody wants their picture taken." Ellen said.
"Hear, hear." Sam said.
"Shut up. You're drinking my beer." Bobby said. Castiel entered while Bobby finished fiddling with a camera on a tripod. Bobby rolled his wheelchair back. "Anyway, I'm gonna need something to remember your sorry asses by." Everyone was in the room now, getting in position for the picture, smiling. Castiel was on the far left with Sam's fist on right shoulder; Sam and Dean were in the back (Since they're the tallest, next to Cas) with Sabrina between them and Dean's arm around her shoulders. Ellen was next to Sabrina and slightly in front of Castiel. Jo was on Dean's other side with his arm around her as well and Bobby in his chair in front of her.
"Ha! Always good to have an optimist around." Ellen said.
"Bobby's right. Tomorrow we hunt the devil. This is our last night on earth." Castiel said. The smiles disappeared. The camera flashed.
CITY STREET - DAYMissing posters were tacked to a telephone pole. The Impala drove in followed by another car; visible behind them was a billboard that says "ANTI-GOD IS ANTI-AMERICAN" on an American-flag background, next to a sign that advertised "ADULT VIDEOS". Dean, Sabrina, and Sam both had hands out the windows, phones in hand.
"You getting a signal?" Sam asked.
"No, nothing. Nice and spooky." Dean said. Dean waved the other car up next to him. Ellen was driving, Jo shotgun.
"Place seem a little empty to you?" Ellen asked.
"We're gonna go check out the PD. You guys stay here, see if you can find anybody." Dean said.
"Okay." Dean drove off. Ellen parked. Jo got out and turned to look at Castiel in the back seat. She knocked on the window.
"Ever heard of a door handle?" Jo asked.
"Of course I have." Castiel said. He was standing outside the car. He looks around; the street is deserted except for the three of them.
"What is it, Cas?" Ellen asked.
"This town's not empty." Castiel said. From Castiel's point of view, the town was filled with dozens of old white men in suits, all standing still, attention fixed on something in the distance. "Reapers."
"Reapers? As in more than one?" Ellen asked.
"They only gather like this at times of great catastrophe. Chicago Fire, San Francisco Quake, Pompeii. Excuse me, I need to find out why they're here." Castiel walked off, pausing to look at the nearest reaper, who ignored him. Jo and Ellen looked at each other. Castiel's attention was caught by a Reaper inside a building who turned away from the window, the first of the dozens to show any signs of life. The building's marquee read "JESUS SAVES". Castiel appeared inside the building at that window. He came down the corridor and entered a room.
"Hello, brother." A voice said. White light.
CITY STREET - DAY
Ellen and Jo were back in their car. They came to a stop next to Dean, Sabrina and Sam.
"Station's empty." Dean said.
"So's everything else." Jo said.
"Have you seen Cas?" Ellen asked.
"What? He was with you." Sam said.
"Nope. He went after the reapers."
"Reapers?" Dean asked.
"He saw reapers? Where?" Sam asked.
"Well, kind of everywhere." Jo said. The trio looked at each other.
BUILDING - DAY
The room was dark, lit mostly by firelight. Castiel was standing in the center of a ring of fire. He noticed the other person in the room in the dark.
"Lucifer." Castiel said. Lucifer didn't look healthy; his face had a few, what looked like, small burns.
"So I take it you're here with the Winchesters."
"I came alone."
"Loyalty. Such a nice quality to see in this day and age. Castiel, right? Castiel. I'm told you came here in an automobile."
"…Yes."
"What was that like?" Lucifer asked. Castiel looked around.
"Um. Slow. Confining."
"What a peculiar thing you are."
"What's wrong with your vessel?" Castiel asked.
"Yes. Um. Nick is wearing a bit thin, I'm afraid. He can't contain me forever, so—
"You—" Castiel stepped forward, apparently intending to get in Lucifer's face, but stopped short; the fire separated them. "You are not taking Sam Winchester. I won't let you."
"Castiel. I don't understand why you're fighting me, of all the angels."
"You really have to ask?"
"I rebelled, I was cast out. You rebelled, you were cast out. Almost all of heaven wants to see me dead, and if they succeed, guess what? You're their new public enemy number one. We're on the same side, like it or not, so why not just serve your own best interests? Which in this case just happen to be mine."
"I'll die first."
"I suppose you will."
CITY STREET - DAY
Ellen, Dean, Sam, Sabrina, and Jo are walking, shotguns in hands and looking around for trouble.
"Well, this is great, been in town twenty minutes and already lost the angel up our sleeve." Dean said.
"You think, uh, you think Lucifer got him?" Sam asked.
"I don't know what else to think."
"There you are." A voice said. Everyone turned to face it.
"Meg." Sam said.
"Shouldn't have come here, boys." Meg said.
"Hell, I could say the same thing for you." Dean said. He aimed the Colt at Meg.
"Didn't come here alone, Deano." Meg said.
Something splashed in a puddle near Meg's feet; the sounds of dogs growling and barking. Sam, Ellen, and Jo glanced around for the source of the noise; so did Dean, but he was obviously pretending he was not afraid. Aya on the other had looked at somethings that weren't there.
"Hellhounds." Dean said.
"Yeah, Dean. Your favorite. Come on, boys and girls. My father wants to see you." Meg said.
"I think we'll pass, thanks." Sam said.
"Your call. You can make this easy or you can make it really, really hard." Meg said. Dean looked back and Ellen nodded.
"When have you known us to ever make anything easy?" Dean asked. Meg shook her head. Dean shifted his aim and fired; blood spurted from the hellhound next to Meg's feet.
"Run!" Sam shouted. They took off. A hellhound tackled Dean. Jo and Aya looked back.
"Dean!" Jo shouted. Aya rolled her eyes and started to run back.
"Jo, stay back!" Dean shouted. Jo fired her shotgun in Dean's direction while Aya aimed directly at the hellhound. Ellen and Sam stopped running. Jo and Aya kept firing, knocking the hellhound further and further back. Another got Jo from the side. Sam and Ellen started running towards Jo, Aya and Dean.
"No!" Ellen shouted. The hellhound shredded Jo's side. Aya turned and fired at that hound as Sam and Ellen started firing.
"Aim where I am, I see them!" Aya shouted. Dean scooped up Jo and ran past Sam, Aya and Ellen, who turned to follow. Dean headed for one of the nearest stores, Ellen went ahead to open the door, and Sam and Aya stayed back to keep shooting.
HARDWARE STORE - DAY
Dean leaned Jo against the counter; she was whimpering.
"Okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, breathe now—" Ellen said. Sam and Aya chained the doors shut.
"Okay." Sam said.
"Boys, need some help here!" Ellen said. Sam, Aya and Dean grabbed bags of rock salt.
"Go go go—" Sam said. They slit the bags open and frantically lined the doorway and windows. Ellen peeled Jo's hand away from the injury; it spurted blood. Sam, Aya and Dean stared and Ellen looked over her shoulder at them, horrified.
Jo had been bandaged up.
"Gonna be all right." Ellen said. Sam handed a bowl to Ellen.
"Thank you." She said. Sam went over to Dean, who was fiddling with something electronic.
"How's she holding up?" Dean asked. A long pause.
"Salt lines are holding up." Sam said.
"Safe for now." Dena said.
"Safer. Trapped like rats." Sam said.
"Hey, you heard Meg. Her father's here. This is our one shot, Sammy. We gotta take it, no matter what." Dean said. Another long pause. "Here we go."
"Sam, some help here, please?" Ellen asked. Dean's gadget squealed. Sam looked over at Aya who was looking out the window. Sam walked over to her.
"You can see them."
"Of course I can, I have three myself." Aya said with a half shrug.
"Three?"
"Well one's my father's…"
"Can't you make them fight those ones?"
"Hellhound against hellhound… not pretty." Aya shook her head.
"Well… warn us if they come." Sam said. Aya did a little two fingered salute.
BOBBY'S HOUSE – DAY
"The number you dialed is unavailable. Please try your call again." The voice on the phone said.
"Damn it, boys." Bobby said. There was static from the next room. Bobby wheeled over and moved a book off a CB radio.
"K C 5 Fox Delta Oscar, come in." Dean said. Bobby picked up the mouthpiece.
"K C 5 Fox Delta Oscar, go ahead."
"Bobby, it's Dean. We got problems." Bobby sighed and looked heavenward.
"It's okay, boy. That's why I'm here."
"Is everyone all right?"
"No. It's—it's—it's Jo. Bobby, it's pretty bad.
"Okay. Copy that. So now we figure out what we do next.
"Bobby, I don't think she's—" Dean broke off.
"I said, what do we do next, Dean?" Dean leaned his head on his hand for a moment.
"Right. Okay, right."
"Now, tell me what you got."
"Before he went missing, did Cas say how many reapers?" Bobby asked.
"I don't—he said a lot of things, I guess. Does the number matter?" Dean asked.
"Devil's in the details, Dean."
Ellen tapped Dean on the shoulder with one bloody hand. Dean held up the microphone.
"Bobby, it's Ellen. The way he was looking, the number of places Castiel's eyes went, I'd say we're talking over a dozen reapers, probably more." She said.
"I don't like the sound of that." Bobby said.
"Nobody likes the sound of that, Bobby, but what—wh—what does that sound like?" Dean asked.
"It sounds like death, son. I think Satan's in town to work a ritual." Bobby said. Bobby turned pages in his book to one marked with a Post-it that reads "Seventh Seal". "I think he's planning to unleash Death."
"You mean, like, as in this dude and taxes are the only sure thing?"
"As in Death. The horseman. The pale rider in the flesh."
"Unleash? I mean, hasn't Death been tromping all over the place? Hell, I've died several times myself."
"Not this guy. This is—this is the angel of death. Big daddy reaper. They keep this guy chained in a box six hundred feet under. Last time they hauled him up, Noah was building a boat. That's why the place is crawling with reapers. They're waiting on the big boss to show."
"You have any other good news?"
"In a manner of speaking." Bobby said. Bobby closed the book—it was, unsurprisingly, a large leather-bound Holy Bible—and turned to another one that was already open to a page headed "The Battle of Carthage". "I been researching Carthage since you've been gone, trying to suss out what the devil might want there. What you just said drops the last piece of the puzzle in place. The angel of death must be brought into this world at midnight through a place of awful carnage. Now, back during the Civil War, there was a battle in Carthage. A battle so intense the soldiers called it the Battle of Hellhole."
"Where'd the massacre go down?" Dean asked.
"On the land of William Jasper's farm." Bobby said.
BUILDING - DAY
Castiel was still in the ring of fire and Lucifer was still watching him. Meg entered.
"I got the Winchesters pinned down. For now, at least. What should I do with them?" Meg asked.
"Leave them alone." Lucifer said.
"I—I'm sorry, but are you sure? Shouldn't we—"
"Trust me, child. Everything happens for a reason." Lucifer stroked Meg's face. Castiel looked around and saw a pipe bolted to the wall. "Well, Castiel, you have some time. Time to change your mind?"
HARDWARE STORE – DAY
"That's my girl, you're okay, honey—" Ellen said. Jo looked no better. Ellen was next to her. Dean, Aya and Sam were several feet away.
"Now we know where the devil's gonna be, we know when, and we have the Colt." Dean said.
"Yeah. We just have to get past eight or so hellhounds and get to the farm by midnight." Sam said."
"Yeah, and that's after we get Jo and Ellen the hell out of town."
"Won't be easy."
"Stretcher?" Dean asked.
"I'll see what we got." Sam said. Sam turned to go looking.
"Stop. Guys, stop." Jo said. Ellen looked between the boys and Jo. "Can we, uh, be realistic about this, please?" She asked. The three walked over to Jo. "Uh! I can't move my legs. I can't be moved. My guts are being held in by an ace bandage. We gotta—we gotta get our priorities straight here." The brothers looked at each other then at Jo. "Number one, I'm not going anywhere."
"Joanna Beth, you stop talking like that." Ellen said.
"Mom. I can't fight. I can't walk. But I can do something. We got propane, wiring, rock salt, iron nails, everything we need."
"Everything we need?" Sam asked. Aya sighed and looked at Jo. Jo looked at her then at Sam.
"To build a bomb, Sam." Jo said.
"No. Jo, no." Dean said.
"You got another plan? You got any other plan? Those are hellhounds out there, Dean. They've got all of our scents. Those bitches will never stop coming after you. We let the dogs in, you guys hit the roof, make a break for the building next over. I can wait here with my finger on the button, rip those mutts a new one. Or at least get you a few minutes' head start, anyway."
"No, I—I won't let you." Ellen said.
"This is why we're here, right?" Jo asked. Ellen shook her head, crying. "If I can get us a shot on the devil—Dean, we have to take it." Jo said.
"No!" Ellen said. She looked up at Dean. "That's not—"
"Mom. This might literally be your last chance to treat me like an adult. Might wanna take it?" Jo was smiling. Ellen started sobbing.
"You heard her. Get to work." Ellen said.
Sam and Dean grabbed their materials and assembled the bombs, filling them with nails and rock salt for shrapnel. Night had fallen. Sam took Jo's hand for a minute while Dean strung the wire to the button Jo would hold.
"Okay, this is it. I'll see you on the other side. Probably sooner than later." Dean said.
"Make it later." Jo said. Dean put the button in Jo's hand and held on. Jo was crying. Dean kissed her once on the forehead and leaned their heads together for a moment before getting up. Ellen came back to sit by Jo. They watched each other for a moment and Ellen smiled "Mom, no." Jo said.
"Somebody's gotta let them in. Like you said, you're not moving. You got me, Jo. And you're right, this is important." Jo nodded. "But I will not leave you here alone." Ellen said.
"Dean—" Sam said.
"Get going now, boys." Ellen said.
"Ellen—" Dean said.
"I said go." Sam looked at Dean and Aya. They both started to walk away. "And Dean?" Dean looked back. Dean looked back. "Kick it in the ass. Don't miss." Ellen said. Dean nodded. He, Aya and Sam headed for their exit. Ellen unchained the doors, swept away the salt line, opened the propane tanks, and sat back down with Jo, hugging her. "I will always love you, baby." Ellen said. The hellhounds were audible again. Ellen looked back at Jo, who had stopped moving. "Honey?" No reaction. "Jo—" Ellen sobbed. "It's okay, it's okay." Ellen kissed Jo on the head. "That's my good girl." The doors burst open. Ellen looked. Two hellhounds slammed into the open doors.
Sam ran across the fire escape, Dean and Aya right behind, then Sam went down the ladder and Dean and Aya followed. They hurried down the alley.
A hellhound blew Ellen's hair. She held Jo's finger against the button and forced a grin.
"You can go straight back to hell, you ugly bitch!"
The hardware store exploded. The trio stopped to watch it blow, then ran.
FIELD - NIGHT
Sam, Aya and Dean snuck through bushes. Dozens of men stood in the field, attention on something out of sight.
"Guess we know what happened to some of the townspeople." Dean said.
"Okay." Sam said.
"Okay."
"Last words?" Sam asked. Dean looked at Sam for a moment.
"I think I'm good." Dean said.
"Yeah. Me too." Sam said. They looked at Aya.
"Well, I'm gunna miss you two." Aya said nonchalantly.
"…Thanks Aya." Sam said.
"Here goes nothing." Dean said.
Lucifer was filling a hole.
"Hey!" Sam called. Sam approached Lucifer, readying a shotgun. Lucifer turned, dropping the shovel. "You wanted to see me?"
"Oh, Sam, you don't need that gun here. You know I'd never hurt you. Not really."
"Yeah? Well, I'd hurt you." Dean said. Dean pointed the gun at Lucifer, point-blank to the forehead. "So suck it." Dean said. Dean fired. Lucifer collapsed. None of the men did anything. Dean and Sam watched the corpse for a minute. Lucifer inhaled and shifted position.
"Owww..." He said. Lucifer stood up. Sam was horrified. "Where did you get that?" Lucifer punched Dean, who flew into a tree. Sam watched Dean land and turned back to Lucifer. "Now, where were we?" Lucifer looked over and noticed Aya. He smiled and did a little wave, wiggling his fingers.
"'ello Luci." Aya said and crossed her arms showing she wasn't going to make a move, but waved similarly. Lucifer slightly rolled his eyes. He looked back at Sam.
"Don't feel too bad, Sam. There's only five things in all of creation that that gun can't kill, and I just happen to be one of them. But if you give me a minute, I'm almost done." Lucifer picked up the shovel and moved two scoops of dirt. Sam hurried over to Dean, checking his pulse. Lucifer leaned on the shovel. "You know, I don't suppose you'd just say yes here and now?" Sam stood up. "End this whole tiresome discussion? That's crazy, right?"
"It's never gonna happen!" Sam said. Lucifer went back to filling his hole.
"Oh, I don't know, Sam. I think it will. I think it'll happen soon. Within six months. And I think it'll happen in Detroit."
"You listen to me, you son of a bitch. I'm gonna kill you myself, you understand me? I'm going to rip your heart out!"
"That's good, Sam. You keep fanning that fire in your belly. All that pent-up rage. I'm gonna need it. Sam visibly calmed. He looked around at the men, who were still doing nothing.
"What did you do? What did you do to this town?" Sam asked.
"Oh, I was very generous with this town. One demon for every able-bodied man."
"And the rest of them?" Lucifer paused.
"What do you think Sammy?" Aya asked. Sam glanced at her then back at Lucifer.
"In there." He said. "I know, it's awful, but these horsemen are so demanding. So it was women and children first. I know what you must think of me, Sam. But I have to do this. I have to. You of all people should understand.
"What's that supposed to mean?" Sam asked. Lucifer dropped the shovel.
"I was a son. A brother, like you, a younger brother, and I had an older brother who I loved. Idolized, in fact. And one day I went to him and I begged him to stand with me, and Michael—Michael turned on me. Called me a freak. A monster. And then he beat me down. All because I was different. Because I had a mind of my own. Tell me something, Sam. Any of this sound familiar? Anyway. You'll have to excuse me. Midnight is calling and I have a ritual to finish. Don't go anywhere. Not that you could if you would." Sam went back to Dean. Aya jogged over. Lucifer turned to his hole and chanted, then turned to his demons. "Now repeat after me. We offer up our lives, blood, souls—" Dean stirred.
"We offer up our lives, blood, souls—" The demons repeated.
"To complete this tribute."
"To complete this tribute." One by one the demons flashed gold and fell over, dead. Sam and Dean stared. Lucifer looked at them.
"What? They're just demons." Lucifer said. He looked at Aya. "No offence Ayami." He smirked and winked. Dean turned to her.
"Does everything know you?" He asked. She shrugged.
BUILDING - NIGHT
A bolt on the pipe in the wall was spinning. Castiel was still in the fire ring, Meg watching.
"You seem pleased." Castiel said.
"We're gonna win. Can you feel it? You cloud-hopping pansies lost the whole damn universe. Lucifer's gonna take over heaven. We're going to heaven, Clarence."
"Strange, because I heard a different theory from a demon named Crowley."
"You don't know Crowley."
"He believes Lucifer is just using demons to achieve an end, and that, once he does, he'll destroy you all."
"You're wrong. Lucifer is the father of our race. Our creator. Your god may be a deadbeat. Mine—mine walks the earth." Castiel got the bolt loose and pulled the pipe free of the wall. It slammed Meg through the fire into Castiel's arms. Castiel pressed his palm to Meg's forehead. Nothing happened. Meg laughed. "You can't gank demons, can you? You're cut off from the home office and you ain't got the juice. So what can you do, you impotent sap?"
"I can do this." Castiel leaned closer as if to kiss Meg, then threw her down across the fire. She screamed. He walked out across her back.
FIELD - NIGHT
Lucifer stared at the mass grave. Sam stared at Lucifer. Dean glanced between them. The ground rumbles. Castiel appeared next to Sam, Aya and Dean and held a finger to his lips. Lucifer turned and all four were gone. He walked forward.
"Oh, hello, Death." Lucifer said.
BOBBY'S HOUSE - DAY
The glasses from Ellen and Castiel's drinking competition were still on the table. The TV was on, showing a tornado; the captions read "STATE OF EMERGENCY, Paulding County" and "KOUA 16".
"Just received an update that the governor has declared a state of emergency for Paulding County, including the towns of Marion, Fetterville, and Carthage. The storm system has reportedly touched off a number of tornadoes in the area." Sam, Sabrina, Dean, and Bobby were gathered around the fireplace. Bobby held a copy of the photograph taken earlier. "Death tolls have yet to be estimated, but state officials expect the loss of life and property to be staggering." Bobby leaned forward and dropped the picture into the flames. He, Dean, Sabrina, and Sam watched it burn.
