Chapter 9
Emelina stared at the ceiling, hoping that she could figure out what to do and how to process everything. She hadn't slept at all, she had tried, she had gone for a shower and changed into a pair of short mid-thigh pj pants with a loose comfy (too big) t-shirt. She had tried to fall asleep but her mind was too agitated so she spent the rest of the night staring at the ceiling, hoping to find the answers to the millions of questions that were running through her mind.
"Mummy?" The small voice brought Em out of her thoughts.
She looked over and smiled softly as she saw her daughter. Her blonde hair and ruffled up and her small hand rubbing her eyes tiredly, a small teddy grasped loosely in the other. "Hey baby." Em said softly as she sat up, picking up her daughter and placing her on her lap.
Imogen immediately snuggling up to her, "Mummy?"
"Yeah sweetie?"
"Where are we?"
Em let out a small sigh as she gently ran her fingers through her daughter's hair, "I… I don't know."
"When are we going home?"
"I don't know."
"Where's everyone else? Where's Izzy and Clary and Jocy and Magnus?"
"I don't know."
"Who were those men?"
"I… I don't know."
"Who was that man you were talking to… last night?"
Em paused for a moment, her mind racing, 'what do I tell her?' "He… he… he…" She felt her throat constrict, "He… I…"
"Mummy?"
"hm?" was all she could mumble out.
"Is he my… daddy?"
Tears stinged Emelina's eyes at Imogen's words, 'daddy…' Emelina took a deep breath, "Y-Y-Yes-s." She stammered.
The next few hours were spent in silence, Imogen resting on her mother's stomach, listening to her steady heartbeat as Emelina ran fingers through her daughter's soft hair.
The silence was broken when Imogen said, "Mummy, I'm hungry."
Em sighed, "Ok. You stay here, I'll go get food." She said as she placed her daughter to the side and stood up. She picked up the remote and switched on cartoons for Imogen to watch before heading out.
Emelina cautiously made her way down the hall, now noticing how dark the décor was, dark timber walls and floor, a black carpet running down the centre of the hall, black trim on the doors and on the staircase. She was now at the bottom of the stairs, finding herself in another hall only this one was wider. She soon noticed the doors at the end of the hall; they were the same doors she had barged through last night. Em timidly made her way over to them and gave a soft knock.
"Come in!" The familiar voice called from the other side.
She slowly pushed the door open the slightest bit and stepped in.
He seemed distracted, to busy going through heaps of paperwork, his voice harsh, "What is it?"
"I… uh… we… she…" she stammered.
His head snapped up at the sound of her voice, a worried look in his face as he stood up from his seat, "Em! Uhh… sorry about that, I didn't realize it was you before."
"That's fine."
An eerie silence hung in the room for a second before Sebastian broke it, "What were you looking for?"
"Umm… yeah. Imogen is awake and I was wondering if I could get some breakfast for us?"
"Yeah! Of course! Sorry I didn't send someone up before, I didn't want to wake you or anything." Another silence fell into the room for a moment, "Follow me, I'll show you where the kitchen is but if you want I can get someone to bring something up for you?"
"No. That's fine; I'd prefer to prepare our meals myself." She said softly, her arms crossed over her chest as if she tried to hide from him as she followed him back down the hall.
She was now standing in the middle of a large kitchen. The benches were a black and the doors on the cabinets were mirrors. There was a six burner stove, a four rack oven, TWO dishwashers and a double doored fridge and freezer.
"Uhh, the plates are in there" He said as he pointed to one of the cabinets, "Pots and pans in there. Cutlery in here. Glasses up there. The food's in this one." He said opening up the pantry before closing it, not letting her get a too good of a look at what type of food there was. "Freezer. Fridge. Ice-button… and… I think that's all that you really need to know." He finished as he put his hands in his pockets and looked at her awkwardly.
"Umm… thanks."
He seemed to not want them to slip into an eerie silence so he opened up the pantry and started looking through it while talking to himself. "So, what sort of cereal do you eat? Is she aloud fruit loops? No, of course not, she's a little girl, too much sugar. What about coco-pops? Don't be ridicules! What about- no. Toast? Nah, too bland. What sort of jam do they like? Do they even eat cereal? What if she has allergies?! Shit! What sort of allergies? Highly dangerous ones like Peanuts or simple ones that a simple epidural will take care of? Crap! I don't know what I'm doing! How the hell am I meant to-"
"Christopher." Em said softly, but it was loud enough for him to stop and turn back around to her.
"I-I'm sorry. I j-just don't know how to do this."
The edges of Emelina's lips tugged upwards, "It's fine. Look, she's not allergic to anything. You were right; I don't let her have sugary cereals. She eats fruit. She loves fruit and yogurt actually. Porridge. Sometimes I let her have cornflakes. She eats toast but the only thing she likes on it is Strawberry Jam, she's very fussy when it comes to jam. On Sundays I usually cook her runny eggs with soldiers. Drink wise, I don't like giving her juice unless it's a juice box at lunch, usually water or milk. I don't think there's anything else." Sebastian had a small grin on his face as he listened to her and she was only noticing it now, "What?"
"Nothing. I just can't believe it… that's all."
Em slightly blushed as she pushed behind him and started looking for food, eventually settling on toast. "Uhh, toaster?"
"Um, yeah, in here." He said as he opened another cabinet and pulled out a 6piece toaster and placed on the bench before plugging it in and turning it on. "So you put the bread in and then you press down-"
"Chris. I know how to use a toaster." She rolled her eyes, a clear smile on her lips as she bumped him to the side and saw the vigorous blush spread across his cheeks.
"So, I guess I'll leave you to it-"
"Wait."
"Yeah?"
"Can you stay… I might need help finding…. The jam." She said in an attempt to get him to stay.
A small grin pinched at his lips as he agreed.
So he stayed, and they talked and laughed, like they used to. She put butter on his nose and he put butter on her nose only to kiss it off which made her blush like a tomato.
They were now walking up the stairs, heading back to the room. Em was carrying three plates and Sebastian was carrying a jug of water and three glasses. She pushed open the door and everything went silent. Emelina's stomach dropped as he daughter stared worriedly at him. Em went and placed down the plates before going over to Sebastian who seemed to be frozen, prying the cups and the jug out his hands and placed them down.
"Imogen?"
"Yes mummy?"
"Come here sweetie." Imogen hopped off the bed and walked over to her mum, slightly clinging onto her leg as she looked up at the man in front of her.
"Imogen… this is… this is… this is…" Em stuttered.
"My daddy?"
Tears pricked Em's eyes at the words. "Y-Yes-s."
Slowly, but surely, Sebastian kneeled down so he was her height, "Hi Imogen." He said softly.
There was a beat of silence, Em and Sebastian worried at how Imogen was going to react and then she did what neither parent thought would happen. She let go of her mum's legs and flung her arms around her father, Sebastian's arms quickly wrapping around his daughter. A single tear rolled down Sebastian's cheek as he heard his daughter whisper, "Hi … daddy."
