Chapter Ten: The First Exam
Everybody in the room was looking over at Ibiki who had appeared from within a cloud of smoke as he looked at the three Sound Genin as well as Davis.
"Enough, you three from the village hidden in the sound knock it off unless you want to be expelled from the exams before they even start." Ibiki said glaring at them.
"My apologies, it's our first time participating and we got excited." The bandaged Genin from the Sound village said bowing his head in apology.
"Whatever, don't do it again if you know what's good for you, that goes for you as well Leaf Genin." Ibiki said to both the sound ninja and Davis who nodded their heads but Davis still kept his eyes on the sound team who walked away to another area of the room as Ibiki looked around at all the Chūnin candidates.
"One hundred and fifty four candidates this year, by the end of this exam that number will be cut in half." Ibiki thought to himself grinning and laughing in his head as he glared at the group of gathered ninja some of which were starting to sweat due to Ibiki leaking a small amount of killing intent for his own amusement.
"Now then the first exam shall now begin, it's a written test so everybody take your seats!" Ibiki ordered everybody who nodded as they were all given assigned seats by several other Leaf Chūnin. Naruto was seated at the front next to Hinata who gave him a kind smile as he returned it happy to be beside somebody that he liked. Kiba was seated between Genin from both the waterfall and rain villages Sakura was seated between nameless Genin from the leaf village while Davis was seated a row behind her in front of Ino.
"Darn a written exam oh man I suck at these." Davis mentally thought to himself as Ibiki coughed into his hand gaining the attention of the room.
"Now then before we begin, there are a few rules that need to be laid out for you all." Ibiki said as everyone went wide eyed as several Genin voiced their disagreement loudly.
"Silence!" Ibiki bellowed as the room went quiet again.
"Good, now the rules of this exam are as follows, rule one is that the written exam is based on a reduction system, unlike what you are all probably used to you all start off with a perfect score of ten points, a point is deducted for each answer you get wrong, so if you lose three points your final score will be that of seven, and if you get all ten wrong you will get zero." Ibiki said as Naruto and Davis both mentally groaned.
"Now then rule two, teams will pass or fail depending on the total of each team members scores." Ibiki said as everyone gasped in shock as Sakura hit her head on the table.
"What, we all get scored as a team!?" Sakura asked Ibiki in shock who sighed as he threw a kunai at her desk making her gulp.
"Shut up, I've my reasons for this." Ibiki said as Sakura went silent as Naruto looked at her.
"No if I fail I'll cause Sakura, Kiba and Davis to fail as well." He mentally groaned.
"Now then for rule number three, the sentinels that you see surrounding you are there to spot any sign of cheating, if you are caught for cheating then they shall subtract two points from your teams total score, be warned the sentinels eyes are keen if they catch you five times then you will be thrown out of here before we even scored your tests." Ibiki said.
"God there's a number of ways for you to lose points and to eventually get thrown out." Davis thought to himself.
"Anybody caught cheating by the sentinels doesn't even deserve to be here, if you wish to proves yourselves as shinobi then prove to us what exceptional shinobi that you are." Ibiki said as Sakura composed herself.
"Okay relax, even if Naruto fails which I hope he doesn't, with Kiba Davis and myself we should still pass this." She thought.
"Oh and two more things, if any member of any team gets a zero and fails then he or she fails the whole team, and also I know there is a four man squad from the Leaf village so we will only count three of the four members scores." Ibiki said as Kiba went wide eyed Davis's jaw dropped Naruto hit his head on his table while Sakura's eyes went wide and her mouth dropped.
"WHAT HE SAY!?" She screamed mentally as Naruto started sweating.
"Uh Sakura's going to kill me." Naruto said as she felt Sakura glaring at him from behind.
"Now the tenth question won't be given out until fifteen minutes before the end of the test, this means you have one hour total." Ibiki said as the minute hand struck twelve.
"BEGIN!" He shouted as everyone turned their papers over and started to read the questions as Davis read them over.
"What the heck, not even Izzy, Ken and Yolei combined could solve some of these questions." He thought to himself.
"Okay Sakura focus time to show your stuff, just Naruto please get one right for me." Sakura mentally pleaded.
"Oh man Naruto's just sitting there he's gonna choke, this isn't going to be good." Kiba thought as Naruto smiled goofily.
"Why am I worried about a test for, I've done a lot harder things like fighting Zabuza, I'll just read each question and see if there are any I can answer." Naruto said as he picked up the paper and read through the questions.
"First ones decipher a code, skip that one." Naruto said as Davis read through the questions over and over again.
"These are integrated problems that are based upon uncertainty and requiring complex mechanical energy analysis, forget what I said earlier Naruto hasn't a chance in hell." Sakura thought worried looking at Naruto who was still reading the questions grinning like an idiot.
"Skip that one as well." He thought.
"Each problems more difficult then the one before, I doubt anybody apart from Sakura and a few others could answer these, and oh I get it now." Kiba thought grinning.
"It's almost like they want us to cheat, but of course now it's making sense." Davis thought to himself.
"Finally figured it out huh?" The right head said to him mentally.
"I think so, we have to cheat to get the answers why else did they say two points would be subtracted for each caught attempt of cheating." Davis said as the three dragon heads nodded.
"Indeed, but you won't have to cheat." The right head said.
"Why not?" Davis asked confused.
"Have you forgotten I am one of the wisest beings in the land, I know the answers easily." The right head said.
"Right silly me, let's do this." Davis said as the dragon nodded it's three heads. Meanwhile Naruto was holding his head as he looked at the test paper.
"Okay there is only one thing to do, I'll just have to cheat and not get caught!" Naruto exclaimed mentally. Meanwhile Kiba was looking at his paper as he looked around the room at the sentinels.
"These guys worry more about cheating then the actual test itself." Kiba thought as he eyed a sentinel write on his board.
"Somebody's been nailed, and another thing only two points, in the academy if your caught once your automatically dismissed right then and there." Kiba thought as he gasped as he remembered what Ibiki said.
"This is more then about the test, it's about gathering information, very clever a ninja has to see through deception, he's not forbidding us to cheat he's actually expecting us to cheat but not get caught by the sentinels." Kiba thought as he looked at Naruto.
"Come on Naruto you can figure this out before we're screwed use your head!" Kiba mentally shouted as Naruto was shaking like crazy. Kiba then looked up at Akamaru who looked at his partner.
"Akamaru see if you can find someone with the answers." He whispered as Akamaru nodded as he looked around the room before he yipped to Kiba who grinned.
"Good doggy, that's one down." Kiba said as Gaara focused as said started swirling around his hand.
"Looks like Gaara's got it, okay Crow don't let me down." Kankuro said as one of the sentinels looked around the room while the bandaged Genin from the sound had shut his eyes as he listened to the person behind him.
"Judging by the duration, rhythm and frequency of the strokes, yes I get it." He said as he started writing on his paper. Meanwhile on another candidates paper a insect was sitting there before it flew away to avoid being swatted as it flew back to Shino and started flying around in an figure of eight.
"Eight got it." Shino thought as the clock continued to tick as Naruto grit his teeth.
"They couldn't get a digital clock!?" He screamed mentally as Davis shut his eyes and reopened them to show they had changed colour from brown to grey as he started answering the questions quickly.
"Look at that one, cool as a cucumber, not bad for a novice but what's with the eye colour change?" Ibiki thought to himself.
"Easy as pie." Davis thought as he answered all nine questions correctly as he looked over at Naruto.
"Now with Naruto, what do I do?" Davis thought.
"Allow us to handle that." The dragon advised him as he mentally nodded.
"Alright try thinking to Naruto now." They advised him.
"Naruto, hey Naruto." Davis thought.
"Davis, what how?" He asked.
"You forgot already I'm a Jinchūriki like you, act naturally I've answered the questions correctly and I'll tell you get ready." Davis thought to Naruto who nodded slightly showing he understood as Davis was just about to mentally relay the answers when a kunai flew right past him hitting the desk beside him as another Genin gasped in shock.
"That's five strikes you and your team fail." The sentinel said as the Genin and his team stood and left the room. Davis sighed in relief as he was about to try to relay the answers to Naruto again. Meanwhile Ino saw that he had finished the questions and was smirking.
"So this guys got all the answers, time to borrow his body with my MIND TRANSFER JUTSU." Ino said as she placed her hands together as her spirit flew towards Davis as he jerked forward as Ino collapsed.
"Sorry about this, but it looks like you've the answers and I need them." Ino said as Davis reopened his eyes with a grin as he took the paper and read over the questions.
"I have to memorise the questions quickly for Shikamaru and Sasuke." Ino thought as Shikamaru looked over to see Ino's collapsed form.
"About time she used that jutsu." Shikamaru thought to himself as Sauske looked over at Ino as well.
"Hn finally." He thought as he activated his Sharingan and copied the person in front of him pencil movements. Ino then left Davis's body returning to her own as Davis blinked and shook his head.
"What the heck happened?" He asked himself.
"That Yamanaka girl behind you, she used her families technique on you and copied your answers." The left head told him.
"She what!?" Davis growled mentally.
"Calm down, they do it all the time, now come on times a wasting." The centre head said as Davis nodded as he activated the link to Naruto again.
"Sorry about the wait Naruto, now the answer to the questions are." Davis said as Naruto mentally nodded as he started writing the answers down.
"Is Naruto actually answering the questions?" Sakura thought in surprise with a smile as Naruto grinned.
"Awesome thanks Davis." Naruto thought as he heard a growl.
"What was that?" He asked as Davis was wondering the same thing.
"Are finally we meet again Kyubbi." The dragon said.
"Roken, Wisp, and Glaciver it's been a long time, five hundred years if I'm not mistaken." Kyubbi said to each of the three heads.
"Wait you two know each other?" Naruto asked the two beasts.
"It's a long story, I'm surprised you would attack a village Kyubbi not even I am that bold." Roken the centre head said.
"Drop it, now why are you contacting my container again?" Kyubbi asked Davis.
"I was helping him answer the questions furball." Davis said as Kyubbi growled.
"Be thankful I'm sealed inside this brat, or so help me I would tear you apart!" Kyubbi bellowed as Wisp chuckled.
"You do realise I am more powerful than you Kyubbi, and you'd be wise to not test my patience." Wisp the right head said as the nine tailed fox growled at the dragon.
"Whatever, but keep it down, I'm trying to nap here." The fox said as he started to snore.
"That's the all powerful Kyubbi, the nine tailed fox?" Davis asked the dragon.
"Unfortunately." Glaciver sighed as Davis cut the link with Naruto as he looked around the room and saw that a lot of teams had been eliminated.
"Alright it's time for the tenth and final question." Ibiki said as everyone tensed up.
"But before that there are some rules that are specific to this question that I need to tell you." Ibiki said as Kankuro walked through the door followed by a sentinel.
"Just in time, did you enjoy playing with your doll?" Ibiki asked as Kankuro gasped in shock.
"Hurry and take your seat." Kankuro nodded as he walked past Temari dropping a tiny piece of paper on her desk before he sat down three rows ahead of her.
"More rules, oh man." Davis thought.
"Rule one is that each of you can choose whether or not to take this question, it is your decision." Ibiki said.
"What choose?" Davis thought to himself as everyone was thinking the same thing.
"Wait what's the catch, what happens if we choose to not take the question?" Temari asked Ibiki.
"If you choose to not take the question you'll get a zero regardless of your other nine answers, that means you and your teammates fail." Ibiki said as everyone remaining voice their disagreement as well as voicing their willingness to take the question.
"Hold on a minute I haven't finished, the second rule is, if you take the question but you get it wrong then you and your team will be forbidden from taken the Chūnin exams ever again!" Ibiki said as everyo day gasped at this except Gaara and Sauske along with a few others.
"That's crap, that's not fair there are tons of people who've taken the exams before!" Kiba shouted as Akamaru barked in agreement.
"Well they were lucky that I wasn't proctoring this part of the exams." Ibiki said grinning as Naruto gulped.
"However if you choose to not take the question speak now, and you can take the exam next year." Ibiki said laughing.
"So if one of us, skips we all fail?" Davis asked Ibiki.
"Yes, now raise your hand if you don't want to take the question." Ibiki said as several people started raising their hands as Naruto was thinking it over.
"Oh man if the questions easy but what if it's not and I get it wrong I'll ruin Kiba, Davis and Sakura chance to become Chūnin forever." Naruto thought sadly.
"Davis helped me answer the questions without me asking him, he could have let me fail but he didn't now his future rides on me getting this question right." Naruto thought as Sakura, Kiba and Davis looked at him.
"Naruto raise your hand, we can try next year." Davis thought.
"Naruto." Sakura thought.
"Hokage, Hokage he has a one track mind, it's all he's got it would kill him to have it taken from him." Sakura thought.
"If he won't raise his hand then I will." Kiba thought as Davis and Sakura were thinking the same thing as they were about to raise their arms but stopped when Naruto raised his hand hesitantly. Then suddenly he slammed his hand onto the desk drawing everybody's attention.
"Don't underestimate me, I don't quit and I don't run away that's my ninja way!" Naruto shouted.
"You realise you'll be a Genin the rest of your life if you get the question wrong right?" Ibiki asked him.
"I don't care if I'm a Genin my whole life, I'll still be Hokage one day!" Naruto shouted standing up glaring at Ibiki.
"He's got balls I'll give him that." Kiba thought.
"Great job, you crazy fool, but you're my crazy fool." Sakura thought smiling.
"Kyubbi has an interesting container this time." Roken said as Davis grinned.
"This is your last chance to back out." Ibiki said.
"No way I never go back on my word, that's my way of the ninja." Naruto told him as everyone left in the room smiled.
"That outburst from him, it's inspired the others to stay, seventy nine left more then I expected, I don't see others wavering that's it." Ibiki said looking at the sentinels who nodded at him.
"Well I admire your determination, those of you that remain I've got one thing to say. Congratulations you've all passed this portion of the Chūnin exams." Ibiki said as everyone's jaws dropped.
"Where's the tenth question?" Sakura asked as Ibiki laughed.
"There never was one at least not a written one." Ibiki said.
"Then what about the other nine questions, are you saying they were a waste of time?" Temari asked him.
"Quite the opposite in fact, the first nine questions of this test were to test your information gathering skills." Ibiki told her.
"You want to repeat that?" Davis asked him.
"Alright, you see my job was to test you not as individuals but as a team, and how well you functioned as a team, that's why you were scored on a team basis so you knew if you did something or didn't do something it affected the whole team. The first nine questions were difficult in fact most of you realised they were more difficult then Genin had a hope of answering, so I can imagine how most of you came to the conclusion to cheat to get the answers except two of you who answered them with out cheating." Ibiki said as Sakura and Davis smiled knowing he was probably talking about them.
"In fact the test demanded cheating, although it would have been useless unless you cheated of somebody, that's why I placed several Chūnin who knew the answers in here so you could cheat off of them." Ibiki said as Naruto's eye twitched slightly.
"Good thing Davis told me the answers to the questions beforehand." He thought.
"You're welcome." Davis thought to him.
"Now then those who were caught failed, it's better to not cheat then to cheat badly." Ibiki said removing his bandanna as everybody gasped at what they saw Ibiki's head was covered in scars puncture wounds and burns.
"Information is a valuable tool, most of the time it's the difference between life and death." Ibiki said placing his bandanna back onto his head.
"What the heck happened to him?" Kiba thought.
"You must also consider your source, information from an enemy is rarely accurate, remember sometimes no information is better then false information which can lead to putting your comrades life in danger, that's why you had to cheat to get the answers those who couldn't were eliminated." Ibiki said.
"Yeah but what about the tenth question?" Davis asked.
"The tenth question gave you two options which were both difficult, you could choose to play it safe and try next year which would result in the whole team failing or you could risk it all and never become a Chūnin basically it was a no win situation, but Chūnin must face this situation everyday, for example your tasked with recolouring a scroll of great importance to your village, but you've no idea how many ninja there are or how heavily armed they are or if they are expecting you or not, you could be walking into a trap for all you know. So would you rather abandon the mission or would you go for it, can you chose to avoid danger? No, you will face suicidal missions that is certain but you cannot think about it all that matters is the goal and achieving it through courage and discipline these are the qualities of a Chūnin squad leader, those who chose the safer of two roads who's courage falters at critical moments those who risk everyone's lives cause they are worried about their own, those who would rather save their own neck at the price of sacred honour will never call themselves Chūnin as long as I breathe, as for the rest of you who have answered all ten of my questions can now move on in the Chūnin exams, now then there is nothing more for me to say except to wish you all good luck." I ik said as Naruto cheered loudly.
"He's a funny one, I'll give him that." Ibiki said as he looked at a window as a black blur crashed through the glass as a banner was pinned up by two kunai to the ceiling.
"She jumped the gun as usual." Ibiki thought as everyone saw a very busty woman wearing a fishnet shirt and stockings with an orange skirt and wearing a trench coat with purple hair.
"Heads up boys and girls this isn't time to celebrate, I'm your next proctor Anko Mitarashi." The woman said.
"You're early Anko." Ibiki said as Anko blushed in embarrassment.
"Great another Naruto." Sakura sighed as Kiba was drooling as he looked at Anko who noticed.
"Like what you see dog boy?" She teased him as Kiba shook his head as Hinata glared at him.
"Ibiki you let seventy nine pass?" Anko asked him.
"What can I say, we've got an interesting bunch of candidates this year." Ibiki said.
"They don't look so tough, by the time I'm done with them the number will be cut by more then half." Anko grinned as Sakura gulped.
"Alright you maggots, I'll tell your squad leaders where to meet me tomorrow morning dismissed." Anko said as everyone left the room as did Anko leaving Ibiki alone to pick up the exam papers.
