Charlotte finished her story with a sigh, looking at Katherine next to her. "So… yeah. That's my crazy story about Rachel. Pretty weird, right?"
Katherine wasn't totally sure how to respond. Obviously all of this was pretty normal to Katherine compared to other things in her life, so she faked a surprise look. "Yeah. Weird."
Charlotte stood, getting up from the bed. "God, she was sexy, though," Charlotte sighed. "I mean, if looks could kill, everyone in a mile radius of her would be dead." The light in Charlotte's hazel eyes sparkle and she bit her lower lip. "She was so damn alluring."
Katherine smirked. The fact that Rachel looked just like Katherine made Charlotte's comments about Rachel's sex appeal stir up something inside of her, deep in her core. Was that… arousal?
Charlotte turned and pulled something out of her drawer; it was a lighter and a pack of cigarettes. "I need a cigarette," she said. "Thinking about Rachel does things to my body that I am not proud of." She laughed loudly, walking out her door. Katherine stood and followed her through the living room to the balcony.
The air outside was cool and the night was dark. Katherine could see houses and a small little forest made of dark, mysterious trees in front of her. She took in the musty scent, the smell strangely reminding her of Mystic Falls. I guess all small towns are kind of the same…
Charlotte lit the end of her cigarette and offered Katherine one. She shook her head politely. Katherine had tried smoking before, back in the 60's. She wasn't a huge fan, much preferring a glass of bourbon or a shot of tequila.
Charlotte bent down, leaning her elbows on the railing and inhaled, letting the smoke curl away from her mouth ever so slowly. Katherine couldn't help but watch the smoky tendrils dance and twirl from her lips in utter amazement; it was such a beautiful sight. She had never seen someone possess the power to smoke so… elegantly. Charlotte was very aware of Katherines gaze burning holes in the side of her head, a small smirk curling at the edges of her lips while she blew out the rest of the smoke.
"What, is there something on my face?" Charlotte laughed sarcastically, turning her head towards Katherine.
The brunette blushed for the first time in many years and looked away, laughing sheepishly. "Sorry. I-I didn't mean to stare." Oh, god, Katherine, first blushing, and now you're stuttering? What the hell is happening to me?!
Charlotte laughed again, softer this time. "Don't worry about it." She looked back out upon the forest and the houses.
There was a silence between them before Charlotte spoke up again.
"Sometimes I try to understand why I'm here."
Katherine shot her a confused glance. Charlotte acknowledged it and sighed. "I know, this sounds really random and out of the blue, but, I just… don't fit in here. Not even a little bit. I'm so different from everyone. Everyone in Willowbrooke is so innocent, so perfect… all the religious fathers with their blonde suburban housewives, and their idiotic football-playing sons and their sisters who study hard, a-and wear their stupid Patagonia jackets and kiss their boyfrie- I-I just don't get it!" Charlotte's dark hazel eyes were filled with frustration as she struck the railing with her fists. "I wanna let go, be free, live my life, be myself! So what if I smoke cigarettes and occasionally smoke some weed? So what if I love old music? So what if I don't wanna be a lawyer or a doctor, and wanna be a writer instead? So what if I love nature, and sex, and Kombucha, and the preservation of rainforests and wild animals- So what if I'm not sexually attracted to boys?! Why does it even matter to anyone? Can't we all just… just be ourselves without being judged? There has to be a point in time when they'll all get tired of calling me a dirty hippy."
There was a silence once again between the two for a short moment. Katherine wasn't sure what to say. She agreed with the younger girl 100%- everything she had said had been so powerful, and she felt like she really knew Charlotte now. She had just poured out her deepest feelings to her, and Katherine felt honored to be able to know them, that she trusted Katherine with knowing them.
"But you're different," Charlotte blurted out, breaking the extended silence. Katherine's head turned to face her, noticing the softness in Charlotte's eyes. Charlotte paused, studying her face before continuing. "I've known it from the day I met you. You don't judge me, you don't expect me to be anything different, you just like me for who I am, and… and I'm so lucky to have you in my life, Katherine, I…"
Katherine couldn't take it anymore. For the past several seconds, she was barely able to comprehend what Charlotte was saying- she could only stare at her lips. They looked so soft, so tender, so curved, so… so delicious...
Katherine leaned in, pausing just before reaching her lips. There was a ghost of a smile resting on Charlotte's lips before the younger girl closed the distance between them.
Even though it had been such a short amount of time since the last time they had kissed earlier that day, this kiss felt so much different. Before, it had been a shock to Katherine, and had made her so confused with her emotions that she had to pull away. She felt like she hadn't known Charlotte well enough. And although the first kiss was nice, it just didn't feel right.
But this… this was completely different. This kiss was lighter, softer, much more delicate than the first. Katherine could tell that Charlotte was being cautious, making sure to not go too fast, because that had resulted in Katherine pulling away last time. Katherine felt the adrenaline shoot through her veins like fire as Charlotte pulled away just slightly, only to kiss her just as softly once again.
Katherine had never felt such gentleness before. She was used to everyone being rough with her, everyone being terrified of the monster she was. Never in her life had anyone kissed her so delicately with such tremendous amounts of passion.
Katherine couldn't believe the swell of emotions she was currently feeling. She could feel Charlotte pull away just to kiss her once again, causing the vampire's heart to beat as fast as a hummingbird's. These kisses were so steady and soft, and when Charlotte warily put a hand around her waist and pulled her in just a little closer Katherine couldn't take it anymore- she couldn't do anything but let the barriers holding in her emotions for all of these years break under the pressure and let her body give in to these slow, soft, amazing kisses.
But just as Katherine was starting to respond to the most incredible kiss she had ever experienced, a noise reluctantly caused her to break away from Charlotte's hypnotic lips as she whipped her head around.
Confusion and embarrassment immediately flooded Charlotte's face as her hand pulled away from her waist. "S-sorry, I-"
"I just heard a car door slam," Katherine said suddenly, cutting her off. "I think your dad's home."
Charlotte's eyes widened, looking down at the cigarette that was still in her hands. "Shit!" she exclaimed, throwing it off the balcony and stuffing the lighter and the pack into her jacket pocket. They both ran inside, quickly making their way to Charlotte's room, shutting the door loudly just as he walked in through the front door.
Charlotte let out a breath of relief after she quickly hid her cigarettes and lighter. "Thanks," she sighed. "If my dad found me smoking, I'd be grounded til I was 80."
"No problem," Katherine said, suddenly yawning. "I'm getting pretty tired."
"Yeah, me too," she responded.
The two stood in silence for a moment, just looking at eachother. It was clear they were both thinking about the kiss, but were too afraid to say anything about it. A small smile appeared on Charlotte's lips.
The two got ready for sleep in silence and Charlotte turned off the lights. They both got in Charlotte's bed. Katherine would be lying if she said her heart had never beat faster in her life. They had slept in the same bed the night before, but this was different… they hadn't kissed before.
At first it was quiet. Katherine lay there under her covers, her thoughts silently exploding. Why was she so afraid to show Charlotte she enjoyed the kiss? To kiss her again? To grab her waist, kiss her neck, rake her fingernails down…
Woah. Clean thoughts, Katherine, clean thoughts… But she couldn't help herself. She bit her lip, hoping to steady her fidgeting body, but it wasn't helping anything...
She gasped softly as she felt Charlotte turn in the bed so she was pressed right up against Katherine's back. One of Charlotte's hands found its way around Katherine's waist, pulling her closer, their legs tangling together absentmindedly.
Katherine let out a breath. This felt… nice. So nice, she could feel her heart slowing down, very aware of every little spot Charlotte was touching her, even the spot on her neck where she could feel her breath spill out onto it. Katherine really wasn't one for cuddling, but for Charlotte, she felt like there was a lot of things she'd do that she wouldn't be caught dead doing with anyone else. Her eyelids began to feel heavy and she could feel herself slipping into a deep sleep.
When Katherine woke up, it was still very dark out. She had woken to a soft sound. She was only half-awake, and she could feel the dark embraces of sleep beginning to surround her once again.
But the same sound brought her out, causing her to stir. This time it was louder, now waking her up completely. It was the sound of murmurs in the other room. Due to her vampire hearing, the voices were quite loud to her. Katherine wanted to ignore it and go back to sleep; she was currently facing Charlotte, her arms wrapped around her neck, their hips just barely touching. Strange, she didn't remember throwing her arms around Charlotte's neck… she felt herself blush a bit at this, realizing how close their faces were. If she tilted her head up just an inch or two…
But the murmurs were getting louder now. Loud enough for Katherine to hear the words of a woman, saying, 'It's becoming a huge problem that we need to fix.' Wait. A woman's voice!? Who the hell was over here at this time of night?
Katherine reluctantly untangled herself from Charlotte, careful not to wake her. Using vampire speed, she hid in the hallway listening in. She widened her eyes when she recognized the voice of the woman.
"They're infesting this whole town," growled Principal Ferris. "We've already experienced the incredible damage they've caused. There has to be a way to stop them, which is what I'm currently looking into. I'm doing the best I can to look for a proper spell that will rid this town of them for good."
Katherine's face paled. Did she just say spell? As in, witch spell?
"Thank God," said a male voice. Katherine knew she recognized it, but… who did it belong to? "We've been having this problem for a year now. Disappearances, so-called 'animal attacks', lost love ones… we can't have this happening any longer."
Ohmygod. She knew who that voice belonged to. It was Mr. Pickett, the history teacher, the one that had mysteriously known her name. What the hell was going on?
"Tell us more about these vampires," said Mr. Waters, Charlotte's father. "If you are a witch, you must know their weaknesses, how to keep them from killing anyone else in this town. I've been drinking that vervain stuff ever since my wife's murder, but thats the only trick I've ever come to learn."
So that's why he couldn't be compelled.
"Well, the way to kill them is with wooden stakes. Also, they can't come inside your home unless they've been invited in. Vervain burns their skin and keeps them from being able to compel if you drink it or wear it. The sun used to burn them, but they've figured that one out. It just takes some enchanted jewelry to get around it," Principal Ferris informed them. "I'm going to give you all some vervain, steaks and wooden bullets tomorrow. Keep a gun loaded around at all times. But meanwhile, I'm going to figure out that spell. It feels like there's been more and more of them lately. I think… I think they're planning something… Something big. I can sense it."
Planning something? What does she mean by that?
"Alright," said Mr. Pickett. "In the mean time, Mr. Waters and I will keep an eye out for vampires. Especially that new one in town-the one you had a vision about," he said to Principal Ferris.
"What?" Mr. Waters said, confused. "What are you talking about?"
"There's a new vampire in town and she seems deadly," Principal Ferris said, her voice getting low. "She's pretending to be a student at Willowbrooke High, but I had a vision just a few days prior to her arrival, about someone with her same name coming into town and causing major problems…"
"Whats her name? I'll look out for her."
Principal Ferris sighed. "I think you might already know her. I've seen her hanging around your daughter. Her name is Katherine Pierce."
Holy. Shit.
I need to get out of this house. Now.
