Yugi was only semiconscious when they pulled him from the water, the combination of the direct attacks and the shock of hitting the ice cold water, together with the trauma of the duel and Joey's decision leaving him unable to think or move or speak.
He didn't even realise that he was holding his breath until Tea had spoken up and Tristan had shaken him, but nothing would make him let go of it, even when his lungs started burning, crying out for air.
Nothing, at least, until Joey's head broke the surface, Serenity's following milliseconds behind.
Then and only then did Yugi feel like he could breathe easy again.
