A Thoughtful Friendship?

Part II

Romeo and Wendy

"OHAYO!"

Romeo yelled in surprise before falling backwards on the grass. Wendy giggled from her position; hanging upside down in the tree above Romeo had given her the prime opportunity to scare him. Clearly, it had worked.

"WENDY! DON"T SNEAK UP ON ME LIKE THAT!"

"Sorry, Romeo, I just couldn't pass it up!"

Wendy swung back up into the tree so she could land cat-like on her feet next to her best friend. It was hard to believe that they had started their friendship in this very spot almost ten years ago. This was still their favorite spot to meditate and talk when they needed down-time from the guild. Romeo rocked back upright, smiling now.

"Carle finally let you out of training, huh? How'd it go?"

"Pretty good, I still have a little bit of trouble with maintaining my roar for more than thirty or so seconds, but I'm getting better!"

Romeo ruffled her long blue hair affectionately. At moments like this, Wendy was still the young girl he had met years ago here. Her cheeks turned a pretty shade of pink before she lightly swatted his hand away.

"Romeo, I'm not a little girl!"

There was no response to her outburst, but both of them knew there was no way either of them could be considered 'little' anymore. Romeo had grown to be 5'10" (five feet ten inches) and a black-haired carbon copy of Natsu, much to Macao's chagrin. Wendy had remained short, maybe 5'4", but carried her slim figure with an astounding amount of grace. Everyone in Fairy Tail had been extremely relieved when she had not become anything like her Edolas equivalent.

"So, you want to go get some ice cream? I could use a cool off."

"Sure!"

Romeo chuckled; Wendy was easy to please if sweets were involved. With a skip in her step, Wendy grabbed Romeo's hand and began dragging him toward the closest ice cream stand. Romeo fought the blush threatening to rise in cheeks. The truth was, he'd had a crush on Wendy for at least a year now, but he was scared to say anything to her. As much as he admired Natsu, he had not handled his confession to Lucy well. In fact, it had gone so poorly, they hadn't started dating until six months later. The whole thing had scared Romeo into silence. What if his confession to Wendy went worse? What if she never spoke to him again? The very thought had the 22 year old shaking a the knees.

"Are you okay, Romeo? You've been quiet."

"Yeah, I'm good. Just thinking."

Wendy observed him in silence. Contrary to the popular belief that she was a little ditzy, Wendy knew exactly what had been going on with her best friend for the past year. It had been all she could do not to confess to Romeo first. After talking to Lucy and Levy though, she had realized that was not an option. As silly as it sounded to her, Lucy and Levy had told her that boys had this thing where if they didn't do something themselves, they could take a serious hit to their ego. For boys like Romeo, Natsu, and Gajeel, ego was everything.

"Wendy? What kind of ice cream would you like?"

Her head snapped around, smiling to cover her zoning out.

"Cotton candy, please!"

Ten minutes later, the two friends sat on a picnic bench licking their ice cream cones. An awkward silence had descended when both became lost in their own thoughts. Passersby whispered comments about how cute they looked together, if they were together, and how nice it was that two Fairy Tail mages were so close. Only Wendy, with her dragon-slayer ears, heard any of it.

"Hey, Romeo, it's a beautiful day, isn't it?"

Romeo looked around, noticing that it was, indeed, a beautiful day. For the life of him though, he couldn't understand why Wendy had asked such a question. Maybe he was overthinking it.

"Yeah, it's really nice."

The awkward silence returned. Romeo cursed his inability to speak to her; god damn it, she was his best friend! Feelings aside, this was stupid!

"Wendy, I—"

"Shhh, Romeo. Just enjoy the day."

After they finished their ice cream, they began their trek back to the guild. Right before they threw the doors open, Wendy reached over and gently grabbed his hand, as if expecting him to pull away. To the satisfaction of the guild, he was still holding it when they walked in.

I just had to do a continuation of this one shot, the first one was so cute! Plus, I just love Wendy and Romeo, I think they would be really cute. Keep up any requests you want, and bear with me; this just felt like 710 words of awkward XD Thanks so much!
