Videl recoiled and jumped off me, tossing Goten off her back. She ran a few feet away from us, covering her mouth with both her hands. I got to my feet and my face was feeling extremely hot. Goten was hopping around happily, giggling.
"Gohan and Videl kissed!" he shouted repeatedly. To be honest, I wanted to pound his face into the ground.
"Goten, it was an accident," I said firmly, crossing my arms and trying to look serious, but I was sure I was red as a tomato. I turned myself away from Goten and towards Videl and asked if she was okay.
"Yeah, I'm fine," she said, rubbing her mouth with her forearm. A bit of pink bloomed on her cheeks. "I'm guessing he's your brother, right?"
"Yeah," I said. This might seem a bit mean or offensive, but I was so glad Videl was blind. Then she couldn't see me blushing this whole time I was talking to her. We stood there in silence, not knowing what to do or say. The tension was awkward and suddenly I had a new interest at my feet. The dry dirt of the place covered my black shoes and the harsh sun was beating down on my neck. I realized I forgot to put on sunblock that morning.
"You know what? I'll come back another time. Does that sound good to you?" Videl asked, already walking away. I really had no choice but to agree. She waved me off and disappeared into the sky with her aircraft capsule. I sunk to my knees and let out a breath I hadn't realized I had been holding.
That whole kissing thing was wrapped around my head and all I could think of was the replay of it all. I shook my head and tried to tell myself it was nothing, just an accident, but my heart thought otherwise. My heart…
"Gohan, are you okay?" Goten butted into my thoughts. Though, his words were poorly chosen, his concern was sincere and real. I managed to smile and nod, except Goten's expression remained the same. We stared at each other for a fair amount of time.
"Don't tell Mom about this, got it, Squirt?" I said, lightly punching his head. "If you do, we'll all die."
Goten nodded ferociously.
"Good. Now, what do you say we start learning the basics of flying?"
"Gohan?" Goten asked quietly. He was fidgeting with his fingers and was looking at the ground. "You know when Mama called me a monster? She called me that because…. b-because I c-can go Super Saiyan!" He said 'Super Saiyan' like it was a wretched, horrible thing.
My eyes grew and I started sputtering nonsense. Goten, a Super Saiyan? Gosh, that was a sight to see! To think, I was the youngest person who could Go Super Saiyan. I was. Now, here my brother stands, stripping me of my title.
"Goten, can you go Super Saiyan, like now?" I asked him, half-hoping he could and half-hoping he couldn't. My brother nodded ever-so-slightly.
I watched him as he bent his arms in a powering-up position and felt his power level sky-rocket. What amazed me most was when his hair flashed blond and his eyes turned blue. At such a young age, he was able to control his Super Saiyan strength!
"Goten! You're a S-Super Saiyan!" I exclaimed, but it was quite obvious. "This is great!"
My brother looked up at me with pride. "It is? I thought it was bad since Mama called me a monster!"
"It's not bad at all!" I told him and then I remembered something. "Hey, did you know Dad's coming home for a day?"
"WHAT? I THOUGHT HE WAS DEAD!"
"He is, but he's coming back for a day for the World Martial Art's Tournament," I said, "So, I was thinking if you wanted to compete too."
Goten's eyes lightened up. "Are you serious, bro?!"
I laughed. "Of course. I think you could win. Maybe you could invite Trunks too."
So, later that day, we ate lunch outside where the weather was fair and Mom's cooking just pure deliciousness. I waited patiently for my steaming bowl of white rice, snipping my chopsticks consistently. Right when I received it, I dove right into eating the great meal Mom had prepared us for that noon.
"So, boys, how was your lessons?" Mom asked as she sat down. She smiled genuinely as she watched us enjoy the food, which I didn't mind.
"It was great! I can fly now, but Gohan says I'll need more practice before I can go as high as a birdie!" Goten said with his mouth full of rice. He made a swooping motion with his hand and made airplane noises with his mouth. All his chewed up food ended up all over the table and Mom made a quick job in cleaning it.
After she set the towel aside, she said, "Well, Gohan, you seem like a natural teacher. Say, what happened to that girl?"
I immediately stopped chewing and looked up at Mom, who had an unpleasant smile plastered on her face. I gulped, my palms sweaty, my mind running. How did she know about Videl?
"To be honest with you, Gohan, she's quite a looker," Mom said, tucking some hair behind her ear. "For a moment, I thought you two had something."
My whole face was covered with red and I gripped my bowl tightly. I was literally trembling, hoping Goten wouldn't contribute to the conversation with other… details, or else Videl and I would practically be dead meat. For sure, if speaking of the term: Mother. I opened my mouth, but with a gesture, Mom silenced me. It was good, since I didn't think I had the courage to say anything about the incident.
"Don't worry, Gohan. Goten told me everything," Mom said with a wink. I quickly turned to Goten, furious.
"Goten!" I cried out, not believing Mom's words, "How could you do this to me?"
Goten looked as if he were about to cry, so I stopped pressuring him and blamed myself. I should've been more careful and I should've stayed on guard so I didn't end up on the floor and then Goten wouldn't have been able to jump and that wouldn't have been able to happen at all!
"Mom, I can ex –" I began, but my mother threatened me with a fierce look and her chopsticks.
"Eat," she ordered. And so, I picked up my bowl and my chopsticks and resumed eating my meal that didn't taste as good as it did before. With this hot mess, I don't know how to go on living. Then I began to wonder, how exactly did Mom manage to pry that secret out of Goten? It was pretty weird to me.
How it happened…
Chichi called Goten into the kitchen, making sure to hide her secret binoculars she had used to spy on Gohan, Goten, and Videl, hidden. Hopefully, Goten was just as clueless as Goku, so he wouldn't notice a thing out of place. And hopefully Gohan didn't come inside just yet.
"Yeah, Mama?" Goten said unsteadily. From their last encounter, Chichi had called her son a "monster" for being a Super Saiyan, so of course Goten felt abnormally self-conscious. He fiddled with the threads that came loose on the ends of his sleeves and met eyes with the woman who stood before him.
Instead of an aggravated look, he received a smile, which he returned warmly. Inside, he started to feel as if things had gotten back to normal.
"So, kiddo, want some ice cream?" Chichi asked, walking towards the refrigerator. She opened the freezer and dug through an assortment of frozen products and pulled out, from the very back, a box of chocolate chip ice cream. The light frost outside of the carton began to slowly melt from the heat emitting from Chichi's hand. She grabbed a spoon from one of the drawers and walked towards the dining table where Goten was.
Her child's mouth was watering because Goten was hypnotized from his promise of ice cream from Gohan and now his mother had the ice cream in her hand. The only thing Goten could do at the moment was nod.
"Okay, then tell me everything that happened, okay? Then you can have the whole box of ice cream," Chichi said persuasively.
Goten bit his bottom lip nervously, trying to slowly, but casually creep away from his mother. He slid off the chair with barely any movement at all because he had promised Gohan he would not tell their mother, but there was ice cream. Every counter he could think of, he countered that with the words "ice cream". Goten wanted to stay true to his word, but the delicious power of ice cream overwhelmed him. He had been bribed.
