Kristoff was feeling exhausted. The ice harvester had bags under his eyes, which were also somewhat red, because he had literally been up all night tending to his four-month-old daughter Heidi. In a stroke of inconvenience, Anna was currently sick with a high fever and could not help Kristoff without the risk of making their little girl sick, too.
Kristoff was adamant that Anna spend all of her time in bed to recover and that he would take care of Heidi. When Anna asked him about Joseff, Kristoff hesitated for a moment, but soon afterwards answered that Elsa would help him. Although Anna tried to object that Elsa may not be able to help him all the time, Kristoff still insisted that he could take care of both kids.
By now, it was close to noon, and Kristoff had only seen Heidi today, namely because he never once had her out of his sight. To make sure Anna got enough rest, Kristoff took Heidi (while in her crib) into the library to rest there for the night. He had fed and changed Heidi every several hours during the night. But Heidi did not go to sleep very easily, and whenever she cried, Kristoff checked her to make sure he did everything that she might have needed. Part of his lack of sleep was the fact that she would not go to sleep; sometimes she cried, other times she didn't.
At the moment, father and daughter were still in the library together. Heidi was getting a little bit fussy, but Kristoff figured that she couldn't be hungry nor needed a new diaper by now. Even after taking care of an infant with Joseff, Kristoff still didn't fully understand babies and what was wrong with them every time they cried. So he decided to try any and every trick in the book to make Heidi settle down.
Kristoff picked Heidi out of her crib and nestled her in his arms. "Come on, Heidi, sweetie. It's okay. How about a smile? Can you smile? Smile for Daddy." Gripping her in his left arm, he put his right thumb into his ear, then waved his fingers up and down. He did this while he also stuck his tongue in and out, trying to make a funny face. "Look, look. See the funny face? Nyah nyah nyah nyah nyah nyah!"
Kristoff repeated the nonsense words a few more times while also waving his hand and sticking out his tongue. To his delight, Heidi did manage a smile and even a little giggle. Seeing his baby girl smile could only make Kristoff smile, but not so much because he was glad she was no longer crying. He was just happy to see Heidi smile since he had not seen her do it yet, and although Heidi had his brown eyes, Kristoff thought Heidi looked so much like Anna when she smiled and laughed.
"You smile just like how Mommy smiles, honey," Kristoff said. "I know you don't understand what I'm saying yet, but you will one day."
Kristoff kissed Heidi's little cheek, which made her smile again. "Hey, I know what else will make you smile." He put both of his hands around Heidi's waist and lifted her into the air, over his head. "The spinning game! Whee! Whee!" he cried while he tenderly kept holding Heidi above his head and rotated his body to spin her around simultaneously.
For a little baby, it seemed like Heidi was having the time of her life. As her father spun her around, she let out happy babbling sounds combined with giggles. When Kristoff brought her back down, he took things a step further by blowing on her stomach, and that increased Heidi's level of apparent euphoria.
Although he was tired and glad that Heidi was no longer crying, Kristoff could not believe he felt so happy to see Heidi in so much joy. So he continued what he was doing to increase her pleasure. When he finally let his exhaustion begin to consume him, he sat down on the couch with Heidi still in his arms. Heidi raised her arms up to Kristoff, and he decided to do one more act of cuteness for her. Holding her in his right arm with his left hand on her back, he brought Heidi up to his face so that her eyes were on the same level with his own. Then Kristoff puckered his lips and made a kissing sound, which made Heidi giggle again and she placed her tiny hands on his cheeks, apparently trying to mimic him.
Kristoff was so into what he was doing that he didn't notice Elsa walk into the library until she spoke, "Kristoff?"
Immediately upon hearing his name announced, Kristoff stopped what he was doing and looked over at Elsa. "Elsa!" he exclaimed, suddenly feeling awkward and unsure about how to explain himself. "Uh, I, uh, well…you see…"
Elsa laughed quietly. "You don't need to explain, Kristoff. I just came because I came to find you after I remembered that you and Heidi didn't sleep in your room. Did you get any sleep at all last night?" Before Kristoff could answer, Elsa quickly noticed his eyes. "Judging from your eyes, I can tell you didn't."
"No, I didn't. Heidi needed to be fed or changed every few hours and I had to do it since Anna can't go near her. Then at times she got fussy and I couldn't figure out why. When you came in, I was just doing some funny faces to cheer her up."
"Well, I came to find you to see if you were going to join Joseff and me for lunch, but seeing you like this now, I'm thinking that maybe you should take a nap."
Kristoff let out an enormous yawn. "Doesn't sound like a bad idea to me."
Elsa smiled. "Okay, Heidi, sweetie. I think Daddy needs a break right now." She took Heidi out of Kristoff's arms. "Why don't you come have lunch with me and your big brother Joseff?"
"No, Elsa. Let her stay with me."
"Are you sure, Kristoff?"
"Yeah. I'll just lie on the couch and she can stay in her crib. Maybe she'll fall asleep at last."
"Well, all right then." Elsa gently placed Heidi into her crib. She stroked her niece's face tenderly. "Bye, Heidi. Sleep well." Before she walked out of the room, she said, "See you later, Kristoff."
"Bye, Elsa," Kristoff said just as Elsa left and closed the door behind her.
A few minutes later, once he found a blanket and pillow, Kristoff made the couch comfortable before he lay down. Not too long after he did, he finally fell asleep…and it was while he was sleeping that little Heidi finally fell asleep, too. The father and daughter looked very peaceful and content as they slept for many hours.
Hello, my friends! I am extremely sorry for not having updated this series for weeks! Right now, I don't have easy access to a computer with the internet because my laptop no longer works, so I use my mother's, but her charger broke and it has to be charged with my sister's, but she is often away at school during the week. Sometimes I can use my dad's if I can't use my mom's, but since it's his, he needs to use it more than I do. I also have still been feeling depressed and bored, so I haven't been very inspired to write as much. But since today is Valentine's Day, I thought I would a write a chapter about some baby love between Kristoff and Heidi. It was partly inspired by the series' cover artwork. :)
Happy Valentine's Day, everyone!
