"How much faster?!"
"I'm trying here!"
"Keep the pressure on it!"
"Don't you dare leave me!"
Jane's POV- A day and half earlier…
"Anything yet," I questioned when I noticed Kris' figure further down the hallway.
"Nothing," Kris grumbled back as she moved closer into the light.
We had been waiting for the sign-in sheet for several hours and for some reason, the latest sheet was not on the clipboard. Upon hearing this, Kris disappeared, searching for the sheets through the shelves and on desks. I ran my hand through my hairs and asked, "How does that disappear?"
Kris shrugged, taking a seat. "The officer wasn't paying attention and now, we can't find them."
"This day cannot get worse," I mumbled back. Kris leaned back in her chair and I noticed that she didn't reply but continued to gaze down at her hand. I glanced down at her hand to see her fingers running along the beads of the rosary. I looked back up with a sympathetic look as I asked, "Do you miss him?"
Kris looked over at me. I noticed a small expression; furrowing her eyes brows while a small smile formed sadly. "I miss him every day," Kris answered. "He took a broken person in when no one else would. He was the only friend I had in my dark, lonely world."
"And now?"
"I'm not alone anymore. I have you, Maura, Aly, Liam and Gabriella. I have our family and friends who look out for me." Kris then stood up, placing the rosary in her pocket and continued, "That's why we need to catch this killer."
"We will."
"Detectives," we turned to see an older officer breathing heavily.
Kris pushed a chair behind the man. "Breathe Peter," Kris informed the officer as she handed him her coffee mug filled with water. He took a small sip then Kris asked, "Now why are you running?"
"My partner's missing," he answered with a grim look.
I stood from my seat. "Are you sure he's not somewhere else in Headquarters," I inquired, trying to hold a level head.
"No because someone left this on my windshield." He then went into his back pocket to pull out a small note. Immediately, I noticed the red wax seal causing Kris to swipe it from his hand. Kris began to read the words, squinting at the words as she tried to read it. Then she stopped suddenly with a concern look.
"Kris," I called out.
She looked up and instructed, "Jane, call Cavanaugh and everyone else now."
R&I
"I want patrols to look for this lunatic. We have approximately twenty four hours to find Officer Ryan," Cavanaugh ordered to the large group of officers that formed in the lobby. They began to spread out, clearing the lobby quickly while I looked over at Korsak and Frost.
"What if it's one of them," I questioned.
"It's covered," Frost replied. "All the cruisers are tracked in location due to the computers so wherever they go, we'll know."
"Ok. Any location on Officer Ryan's phone?"
"Phone's battery was removed."
"Damn."
"Where's Kris and Frankie," Korsak wondered aloud.
"They are down at Peter's cruiser with the crime scene techs, trying to find something." I answered.
He nodded then leaned against the wall. "What did the note say," he asked.
"Tick, tock. Tick, tock," a voice answered. We looked up to see Kris approaching us with Frankie as she continued, "You have twenty fours to find your fellow officer before he's like the others. Look where the sea meets the land at the three and four."
"Another riddle," I sighed.
"It's a clue though."
"Did you find anything," I asked.
Kris shook her head while Frankie explained, "According to Peter, he found the note on the windshield while the trunk of the cruiser was open. He walked over to see that his partner's cap was on the ground."
"Any signs of struggle?"
"Small amount of blood on the trunk. That was the main reason why Peter reacted, running toward us because he opened the note to see the message," Kris answered.
"But why kidnap a rookie," Frankie asked. "It doesn't make sense that he's threatening us then he kidnaps a rookie that we barely know."
I placed my hand on my chin. "I wonder that too," I stated.
"Value of life."
"What?"
Kris sighed, "As twisted as it sounds but he's questioning our value of other lives."
"That's fucked up," Frost said in disgust.
"Think it out. He kills several people to get out attention by using old cases then sends threats to hurt our families. He wants to see who we prioritize first." I felt my stomach twist while Kris continued to explain, "We all value our families and friends as well as our own lives. If we go out there, we're targets again."
"He's crazy," Frankie pointed out.
We all stood in silence until I said finally, "I'm not going to let the kid die. I think if we divided ourselves then maybe we can find him quicker."
"I'll go with Jane while you three stick together," Kris replied.
The guys nodded then we began to walk away until we heard, "Janie?" I turned and looked over at Korsak who gave a soft look then it hardened as he stated, "Watch your six."
I nodded and replied, "You too, Doctor Dolittle."
We watched as they were walking away, leaving myself with Kris. I looked over at her with a questioning look before she began to move toward the front doors. As we were walking out, Kris said aloud, "I can feel your eyes on me."
I smirked. "Eyes in the back of your head," I commented.
"I learned from the best but I sense you need to ask me something."
"Yeah…do you really think he's trying to see the value of life to us?"
Kris shrugged, "It's a guess. A theory and I'm basing all of this off his behavior. I could be wrong."
"You're usually right…"
"I hope that I'm wrong," Kris retorted softly before slipping into the cruiser.
Gabriella's POV
I was sitting the break room, going over the last minute details for the wedding. I sighed happily as I can envision it then said, "Just a little bit longer." Suddenly, I heard my cell phone ring as I answered with a wide smile, "Hey you."
"I'm not interrupting anything, right?"
"Of course not, Kris. Everything okay?"
I heard Kris sigh heavily then replied, "Not really. An officer is missing, it's getting intense here and…"
I noticed that she stopped in mid sentence. I heard her take a deep breath while I asked, "And?"
"The killer threatened to hurt the family, Gabriella."
I gripped the phone tightly as I glanced down at my engagement ring. I leaned back and asked, "Are you okay?"
"Not really. It's eating at me and Jane, Maura and I are thinking to have Liam, Aly as well as Angela go to the Isles' property for a bit and…"
"And you want me to go as well,"I completed her sentence, sensing her hesitation.
"Yes…"
"Kris…"
"I know what you're going to say already."
"That is?"
"You won't leave me behind."
I gave a soft smile and replied, "I'll stand by your side. However, if you wish me to go then I will." I heard Kris sigh and I continued, "Kris, no matter what happens, I just want you back home safe. I want to be able to marry you."
"And you will," Kris retorted softly.
"Well, I hope so because I don't like to be left waiting at the altar, Detective. It would not be one of our finer moments, love," I giggled.
Kris let out a loud laugh then calmed down. "I needed that," she informed me. "You always know what to say to make me feel better."
"Because you do the same for me." I let out a soft sigh then stated, "Then if you're okay with me staying, I would like that. I would also like to visit you later if I can?"
"I think a visit later in the evening would be nice. I don't think I'll be able to drive since I'm exhausted."
"I'll pick you up then." I heard Kris hum in approval then I said softly, "I love you, Kris."
I heard a soft chuckle before Kris replied softly, "I love you too, Gabby. I'll talk to you soon."
"Be safe."
"Always."
Maura's POV
I entered the bullpen to see that it was completely empty. I noticed that both Kris' and Jane's desks were both unoccupied. I walked over to Jane's desk to see that the files were all closed until I reached Kris' desk. I opened her desk drawer to reveal that they were multiple notebooks but then I noticed Kris' well-known leather bound journal.
She kept it locked away because it consisted of notes from cases but I also knew that there were random writings. Should I read it, I thought as I stared down at journal. I ran my fingers along the journal before I took a seat in Kris' chair. I pulled it open and opened it to see a small note in the front.
It was a list of all our names with a small note next to each one. I laughed when I noticed Angela's notes said to leave the journal be and walk away from it. I finally noticed my name and read the note to myself, picturing Kris sitting at her desk, writing this note.
Maura…Mom, this journal is obviously out for some odd reason. Anyways, it's completely okay for you, Ma and Gabriella to read this. Love you.
I smiled at the note and began to run my fingers through the pages. Kris' pages filled with her neat slant writing then the occasional 'chicken scratch' as she calls it when she wrote quickly. I could see small notes from multiple cases then I noticed small side notes such as 'Miss Mom right now', 'I need some peanut butter', and 'Would I get charged if I killed Ma'. I let out a small giggle at this before I noticed several loose sheets paper.
I pulled them out, noticing that the date was almost ten years ago. How the years changed us, I thought back. For a brief moment, I thought about the younger Kris Marx compared to the present one.
It seemed they were two separate individuals.
I continued to go through the pages until I stopped at the recent activity. I noticed Kris' handwriting all over the pages. "Knows details about the case," I read aloud as I leaned back in her chair. "Connections so far have gone to Jane, Maura, Cavanaugh and I. Hoyt and Doyle but nothing of Adrian's, if you count the piercing in the hand…Latest note: Hoyt's and Price's clothing arrived. What does that mean? Why did he make the threat?"
I can see the confusion through Kris' notes. "I shouldn't leave it out," I jumped and looked over my shoulder to see Kris gazing at me tiredly. She approached and I was going to stand up from her chair but she stopped me, gesturing me to stay seated. She took a seat beside my desk as I handed her the journal. She ran her fingers along it before she stated, "You know the only reason why I got this was because you told me that writing helps my organization."
"You listened that day," I asked in surprise.
Kris gave a small smile and answered, "I've always been listening, Maura. I may act like Jane when I'm thinking but"
I smiled at her as Kris smiled back before she frowned and sighed. "He took my notes," she commented as she tucked the journal back into the drawer. "He used my own research against me," Kris commented.
"You couldn't have known."
"I wish I did."
I moved closer to Kris, taking her hand into mine. I ran my thumb along the scar on her hand. Kris patted on my hand gently before I pulled back and asked, "Did you find anything?"
Kris shook her head. "We checked the areas that Peter usually takes," she informed me.
"What about the note?"
"The note didn't give us much to go on. He gave a window and so far, we are losing daylight," Kris explained as she stood up from her spot. She approached the murder board and gazed upon the photos until she sighed, "I just need something."
"We got another one missing," Jane announced.
I turned swiftly, "What?"
Jane walked quickly up to the murder board, placing another photo of a young police officer. "His name is Otis McNewton. Hasn't been in work since yesterday and he was suppose to work today," Jane informed.
"Have we sent anyone to confirm his whereabouts," Kris questioned back.
"Already ahead of you, Kris. Frankie and Korsak are going down to his residence."
"Detective," Kris and Jane turned to see an officer approach them with a paper in his hand. He was sweating profusely while he handed the sheet to Kris with a shaky hand. "Found it finally," he stated.
Kris took the sheet and questioned back, "Where?"
"Dumpster. I had to jump inside."
Jane took a deep whiff while I cringed in grotesque as the smell inched into my nose. "Oh my," I gasped in disgust.
Kris wiggled her nose and stated, "Take a shower, man." He nodded as he stormed off quickly until Kris stated, "Wait." He stopped at the doorway and looked up with a nervous expression before Kris nodded her head toward him, "Thanks."
He smiled and walked away while Kris released her breath before she brought her attention back to the document. Her eyes scanned the paper swiftly until she noticed something. Her eyes widened as she passed the paper to Jane while she pulled out her phone. "Kris, what's wrong," I asked, noticing the serious expression upon her face.
She didn't answer but spoke into her phone. "Vince, it's Kris….you need to be careful," she informed him.
I looked over Jane's shoulder at the note then I noticed what caught Kris' attention. The name that signed out the files from all our cases was Officer Otis McNewton.
R&I
"Can we get fingerprints," Kris asked as she, Jane, Frost and I all stood in the morgue.
I looked at the page then back up at them. "I can try but I'm not sure how many people handle the document," I retorted.
"What about my journal?"
"I don't think so either. So many people handled it as well."
"Damn it," Jane hissed. "That's our only lead that we have, saying that he's the killer."
"You don't have anything else? Not even surveillance?"
Kris shook her head while Frost explained, "Security cameras were already knocked off during the car fire so we've been offline for some time now. We don't have much yet unless…" He then glanced at our computers. "I'm so stupid," he commented.
"Frost," Jane called out in confusion.
"The computers on the desk in the evidence warehouse," he stated suddenly.
Kris gave a confused look. "What about them," she questioned.
I thought about it for a moment and glanced at my computer. I ran my eyes over it, thinking for a moment until I concluded, "They just inputted new computers down at the warehouse."
"Bingo," Frost retorted with a smile. "I'm going back to the warehouse." He then jogged out of the lab, leaving Jane and Kris utterly confused.
Kris looked over at Jane before Jane looked at me and asked, "What was that about?"
"You two do not read memos," I commented with a smirk.
Jane and Kris both rolled their eyes at the comment because both of them never read the memos unless it was important. "What does the memos have to do with Frost bolting out of the lab like his pants were on fire," Jane inquired.
"I'm not going to comment about the flammable pants. However, the computers that were just inputted at the warehouse have cameras."
Jane's and Kris' eyes widened happily before Jane gave Kris a high-five. "That's one thing done but now, we need to find Ryan and McNewton," Kris commented.
"What did the note say precisely?"
Kris reclined in one of the chairs while she rubbed her eyes tiredly. "Told us that we had twenty four hours to find him before he kills the officer. He then mentioned look where the sea meets the land at the three and four."
"Have you looked into the last part?"
Jane nodded, "Patrolled the shore line and any streets that had an ocean name of some sort."
Kris added, "It's almost close to three and I'm worried that's the last hour for the officer."
"But it's not twenty-four hours then," I commented. I pressed my lips together trying to think up what the riddle meant. "Three and four. Where the sea meets the land," I repeated as I approached my computer. As I typed those key words then added the word 'Boston' with the search, multiple results appeared until I noticed a unique find.
"Kris, Jane, come and look at this." Kris and Jane approached the computer and I pointed to the picture. "Do you know what that is," I asked them.
Kris squinted at the image while Jane shook her head. Kris then nodded and answered, "It's a street mural of the Boston bayside. I've seen multiple times and it's by an unknown person."
"It's located at Third and Fourth Street."
"Kris," Jane looked at Kris who pulled out her phone, texting quickly.
"Already ahead of you. Frankie and Korsak will meet us there."
Jane nodded then kissed my lips gently. "Thank you," she stated then walked out of the lab. Kris followed closely after, kissing my cheek as she left. As the doors closed, I took in a deep breath and hoped that everything will be all right.
There has to be something. Come on. I ran my fingers swiftly over the keyboard as I tried to access the cameras in the evidence warehouse. Suddenly, something popped up and my eyes widened in surprise. "Oh god," I mumbled as I tried to dial Jane's cell phone.
"This is Jane Rizzoli, leave a message and I'll try to call you back."
"Damn it," I cussed. I looked over toward the desk by Jane's and quickly, I dialed Kris' number. "Come on, Kris. Answer."
Kris' POV
Swiftly, Jane drove through the city with lights and sirens until we were about two blocks away. With our vests on, we were prepared to get into anything that was possible. McNewton was a sick bastard and it was still taking time to process that a fellow officer did this. "You ready," I heard Jane asked.
"I am. Are you," I returned the question.
Jane nodded and soon, we noticed Korsak and Frankie standing by the cruiser. I stepped out of the cruiser and looked at Korsak who stated, "We're ready."
"You two take one side while Kris and I take the other. Eyes open and weapons ready," Jane commanded. "We don't know what might happen and if Officer Ryan is alive."
I removed my weapon from my holster and soon, we formed up. Slowly, we began to approach the mural then turned to see an alleyway where we saw a black Camaro, which was the exact description of McNewton's vehicle. The driver and passenger doors were both opened but we could not see beyond the headlights.
Korsak looked at all of us then signaled to move in. I patted Jane's shoulder twice; signaling to move in and soon, we all began to move toward the car. Cautiously, we moved around the car until I noticed a pool of red. Jane looked back at me with a grime expression before we stepped around to see McNewton's body, with a bullet wound to the chest, lying on the ground while another body reclined against the bumper.
I peered out to see that it was Officer Ryan with his uniform shirt ripped open and blood covered his white shirt. His holster was empty but in his hand was his handgun. I crouched down to the body, looking for a pulse while the others checked on Ryan. "He's dead," Officer Ryan informed us in a gravely voice. I looked up at him as he continued to stare down at the body, "Fucker tried to kill me."
"It's over," I replied.
He nodded in agreement while Jane and Korsak helped him stand up. He placed his handgun back in its holster. "We'll need to process it," Korsak informed him.
I pulled out my cell phone about to dial Frost's number to inform him the good news. That was until my phone began to ring causing me to answer, "Barry, I was about to call you."
"Kris, it's not McNewton!"
My eyes widened and looked over at Officer Ryan. "What do you mean, Barry," I questioned back.
"I got access of the cameras, Kris. It's Officer Ryan who took the sign-in sheet! It wasn't McNewton. Ryan is the killer!"
I hung up quietly, placing my phone back into my pocket while I placed my hand on my gun. I began to move closer toward Ryan who was standing beside Jane and Korsak. As soon as I reached him, he noticed my posture and the look in my eyes. He began to move his hand before I drew my weapon to everyone's surprise. "Kris, what are you doing," Jane questioned.
"Move your hand onto the cruiser, Ryan," I ordered. Slowly, Ryan placed he placed one hand on the cruiser while I growled, "Both hands."
"Marx," Korsak mumbled as the others drew their weapons slowly.
"Frost went through the cameras and it wasn't McNewton who took the sign-in sheet." I watched his hand began to move and wisely, he placed his other hand on the cruiser. I walked over, removed his weapon out of his holster, and handed it to Frankie while Jane cuffed him. "I bet if I had the sheet dusted for prints as well as my journal, we'll find your fingers everywhere," I stated.
"You have nothing," he retorted with a smirk.
"That admission is a start," Jane hissed.
Well, I bet you guys didn't expect that! However, we're not even close to the end! Thanks for your support! Please REVIEW, PM, comment, etc! Also if you haven't checked it out, I did a holiday chapter on "New Adventures of Kris Marx!" See ya soon!
