Chapter Ten
Almost all of that week I had to stay in bed, Donnie said I should take it easy for a while. That and I couldn't put any weight on my left ankle still, so moving about wasn't really an option anyway. All the turtles, except for Mikey now, took turns watching over me, I did get to play board games with Mikey though and had plenty of time to get to know all the turtles, Splinter, and two other girls my age; April, and Karai who's company I enjoyed.
When one turtle was watching over me the others were out destroying the Kraang that were remaining in this dimension. I had told the turtles all of what I knew about the Kraang trying to take me and what they had done to my brother, they all gave their apologies but that did nothing for the sadness I still felt for it. I decided not to think about it and only about getting better and getting home.
The turtles tried to reassure me I was safe in their dimension, no Kraang were able to enter after Donnie had alerted who they call the Utrom. The Utrom apparently monitored the portal systems and took care of any threats. The only reason the Kranng got here recently was because of what my father had entered on the portal I came through. The constant reassuring still did not help my nightmares, I had a nightmare every time I fell asleep, I didn't sleep much and I felt terrible for constantly waking the turtles or startling who ever was watching me.
The only information that did reassure me; is that my family was safe. They had all explained to me multiple times that the Kraang were for one, incredibly stupid for such an advanced race. Two they've never actually managed to exterminate anybody to their knowledge. And three, my family was useful to them, destroying them would ruin any chance they had at taking over my world. So at that, I felt better, still worried, but Donnie assured me they were alive.
I sat in the bed reading one of the many comic books Leo had given to me to read while listening to Donnie who sat next to my right fiddling with his laptop, all the turtles except Leo were sitting in the room around me listening to Donnie as well.
"Ok so once I'm done repairing my computer, I'll be able to find the coordinates of where you came from in your dimension Koda. Then we can rescue your family and we'll bring you all back here until further notice." Donnie said continuing to tighten a screw on his laptop. "First you have to finish healing up, tomorrow you can get up and in a few more days I can remove the stitches in your hand." Donnie said focused on his computer. Donnie's eye was almost healed, still had a scab under it and some light bruising but it was getting better, I still felt awful about that, though he had told me countless times "it's okay".
I glanced down at my hand holding the comic book, which I had taken the bandage off to let it air out, the skin was bruised but it looked less irritated. It was itchy from healing and I had to hold back from itching it, that was the only reason I ever put the bandage back on was so I didn't bust any stitches while I was sleeping.
"How long until you can get your laptop fixed there Donnie?" Raph asked.
"For the last time Raph, it may take another few days, Koda really damaged the components in it." Donnie said annoyed.
"More or less your face damaged the components." I said sarcastically, flipping a page in the comic book, I felt bad about it but that was how I dealt with things I felt bad about. Little sarcasm can heal many things in my opinion. This got a laugh from everyone including Donnie, but his laugh was an annoyed fake one. I fist bumped Mikey who sat next to me at my left.
"Booyakasha." He whispered.
"I think this kid's really growin' on me." Raph said chuckling. Donnie gave a not-amused look towards Mikey and I.
Then Leo walked in with bowls of ramen for everyone, he held two bowls in his hands, two balanced on his arms, and one on his head.
"Ooh I want the one on your head! I call it!" Mikey said swiping the bowl off Leo's head as Leo ducked a little to prevent Mikey from toppling the other bowls.
"Show off." Raph said as Leo handed him a bowl. After Leo distributed the bowls to all of us he sat next to Raph on the floor in front of the bed. We all dug into our dinner then April and Karai walked in.
"Hey Koda." April greeted me. April became a quick friend of mine, we both shared something in common, Kraang wanted us for their plans. I had spent some time chatting with her and found her very interesting, she understood the sense I was talking about, no other friend of mine even knew about it.
"Hi Koda." Karai also greeted me. I talked with her a lot as well in my many hours of boredom, I found her just as friendly as April but we had less common ground to work with.
"Hey guys." I said between mouthfuls of noodles.
"What's up April?" Mikey greeted April. April waved in Mikey's direction.
"Donnie any luck with the laptop?" April asked.
"Not much, no." Donnie said tweaking with the screws.
"I got you some spare parts." With that she handed him a plastic bag full of computer components.
"Thanks April." Donnie beamed, quickly digging in the bag for useful parts.
We all sat there chatting for a while, most of talking came from them, as I had nothing to say relating to their city life.
The day ended rather quietly and for the first time since I've been here, I had a relatively good dream.
Early the next morning I was already up by five as I always am. Splinter had brought me some tea and we chatted, we had done this every morning since I had been here. He learned I liked tea so he made sure to bring me some when he made it. We had very good conversations and he remarked that I was wise for my age, but I thought otherwise.
I waited very patiently for the turtles to get up because I wanted to get up out of this bed. And according to Donnie I shouldn't get up on my own, so I had to wait for them. So I repeatedly texted them trying to wake them. They brought that upon themselves, Donnie made me one of his turtle custom, little phone devices and I used that to my full advantage. Donnie had given me a T-phone thingy a few days prior, I never had or used any kind of cellphone. Typing was difficult and lets just say this auto correct stuff as they called it made some very entertaining moments for me. Sometimes I would text them, just for entertainment of seeing what the phone made of my indecipherable texts.
Example of a text earlier that week:
Me: Hehehe Leo can up brick meat at poetry (Which I meant to say "Hey Leo can you bring me a popsicle?")
Leo: Oh. Um. Ok. Thank you?
Me: Nine. (No)
Me: Nine. (No)
Me: Nun (Nuns are now part of the equation, apparently)
Leo: You ok over there?
Me: No (finally got it right, after he asked of course)
Leo: Ok Ill be there in one second.
Me: No (No I'm fine)
Leo: No?
Me: No I'm fine (finally a correct sentence)
Leo: If you say so.
Me: I give a puppy. (not sure how that one happened... up = a puppy?)
Leo: Yeah...I think I'll check on you to be sure.
Something like that happened every time I text some one, eventually they just came to check on me every time I text something. But I was thoroughly enjoying my new phone device even though they became irritated sometimes.
Later that day after I was able to get out of bed without incident. They showed me around the lair and Mikey introduced me to video games. I "suck at playing" according to Mikey. We played for hours, I found it fun but Mikey got bored of having "no competition" in the game.
I was able to move around on my own, something I missed dearly and took for granted as I had been stuck in a bed for over a week. I had to hit Raph with a water balloon after Mikey said to. Raph wasn't allowed to hurt me, so he took it out on Mikey. Leo showed me the bow and arrows they had in their dojo. I had told him of the bow and arrow being my weapon of choice in hunting while I was stuck in bed and he promised to show me.
I was overjoyed, I beat them all in a small bow and arrow "competition" we had. I was at a disadvantage due to my hand but I still won; proud of that. Splinter seemed quite impressed as he watched from a distance.
Another week passed and the stitches were removed from my hand and wrist, which left behind scars. The turtles had to hold me down for that one, after recovering I had enough energy to fend them off this time. I had to wear some of April's clothes because I had none, other than what I came in, they fit pretty good except the pants were always too short, I had long legs. They all kept my mind busy. I had a lot of fun with the turtles, they were just like my brothers. I greatly missed being in the mountains with my brothers, it wasn't the same. They were all very kind and made me feel at home, which I greatly appreciated. We had prank wars, Splinter and Leo taught me some ninja stuff, I enjoyed my stay so far with the turtles but couldn't wait to get home.
I looked in the bathroom mirror, my once sun tanned skin was paler due to two weeks isolated from any sunlight, my freckles no longer stuck out as much, and my indigo eyes were no longer as bright. I hated being inside. I heard the turtles chatting outside in the main room but I sensed Mikey ready with a water balloon and Raph on the other side of the door with another one, I knew how to deal with that situation. Before I could run out the door Donnie yelled from across the lair.
"Koda get out here I fixed the computer! Finally!" Donnie yelled. I burst through the door towards Donnie. Mikey hit Raph with the balloon behind me in his attempt to hit me. I could only imagine the fight the two would get in. I sat next to Donnie while he brought up several pages on his screen and typed some codes as everyone else surrounded him, including Casey a new character to me who I found rude yet as kind as the others. The portal was wired to the laptop. "You live in Idaho right?" Donnie asked.
"Yes."
"Ok, then these coordinates are correct." Donnie was up for days, he ran on coffee and he had bags under his eyes. "Tomorrow morning we will open the portal and see what we can do." He said determined.
"So everyone get a lot of rest." Leo said to the others then patted my shoulder. "We're going get you home Koda." Leo said with a sparkle in his eyes. I stared back at him for a split second, out of all of them, Leo was the one who I had become closest with. I don't know what it was, but we clicked faster than I did with the others.
Everyone seemed over joyous that I'd be able to reunite with my family, not in a rude way that they wanted me gone, but in way that they wanted to see me be happy.
It was late, everyone prepared for bed and the adventure tomorrow of rescuing my family.
