"Are you going to shoot me Brian?" Natasha asked with a smirk, seemingly without a care in the world.
"You have no idea how tempting it is. After all, I still owe you for Kabul."
"You have five seconds to drop your gun or I'll shoot you myself."
No one had seen Clark move, but he now had his gun centimeters from the former federal agent's head. Slowly Brian complied, dropping the weapon on the floor and kicking it away from him. Suddenly Clark heard the door slam, and he saw that Natasha had walked out. Clark swore and walked out the door, nearly breaking it off the hinges when he shut it behind him.
"Are you just going to stand there and stare?" Natasha asked, and Clark laughed.
"Well I could stare at you all day and never get bored but I don't want to seem like some sort of pervert."
"I don't think anyone could ever mistake you for that Clark." She replied, knowing that if anyone else had said what Clark just did she would kick their ass.
"Speaking of mistakes I made a big one back their with O'Connor and I'm sorry. I'm not used to being around-"
"Women who can handle themselves?" She asked, finally turning to look at him.
"Exactly. I saw Brian pull a gun on you and I overreacted. I'm so sorry."
"Clark, we both know I'm more than capable of dealing with practically anyone, but I still overreacted. I'm just not used to having someone besides Clint care enough to watch my back."
"Do I have competition for your affections Agent Romanov?" Clark asked teasingly, making Natasha smirk as she walked over to him.
"Not a chance." She replied, kissing him softly.
"I am sorry you know. It's just..."
"Just what Clark?" Natasha asked, sensing that this was something the Last Son of Krypton needed to get off of his chest.
"I can't lose you Natasha."
"What are you talking about Clark? I'm right here, and I have no intention of going anywhere."
For a moment there was silence, Clark obviously struggling with how to phrase what was on his mind.
"I'm scared Natasha." He said at last, making shock roll across the woman's usually calm and impassive face. She had not known Clark for more than a couple months, but in the short time that she'd grown to love him she had never seen him scared of anything, not even his own death.
"Every time I close my eyes I see them. The faces of the people that have died for my mistakes, for my secret. The people I couldn't save. Ryan, Kyla, Alicia." He said, feeling his voice crack on the last name. Natasha placed a hand on his shoulder, knowing that he needed to finish getting all of this off his shoulders once and for all.
"Two years ago I met a woman who could see your future just by touching you. I saw my future Natasha. I stood alone, surrounded by the graves of everyone I ever loved."
"That's not going to happen Clark, I promise you."
"You can't fight destiny forever."
"To hell with destiny. If you couldn't fight destiny than I wouldn't be in love with you. I would still be an assasin who didn't care about anything but the next job, constantly having to wonder about whether or not I would even live to see the next day. Instead I'm happier than I've ever been. Now let this go, alright?" She asked, and Clark nodded, knowing that she was right. He needed to live for now, and not worry about some destiny. He would make his own, with Natasha right by his side every step of the way.
"I need to take this." Natasha said as her phone rang.
"Are you sure that's a good idea? What if it's tapped?"
"It's equipped with a scrambler." She replied before answering the phone.
"Romanov."
"It's Coulson, I need you and Clark to meet me tomorrow at our old training facility."
"While Hill's still chasing us? How stupid do you think I am Phil?"
"Hill's not S.H.I.E.L.D. it's been compromised. They're being run by Hydra."
"I thought Hydra died with the Skull."
"No such luck I'm afraid."
"Alright, I'll be there. 1800 hours."
She hung up, turning to Clark who was looking at her with concern.
"Hydra is running S.H.I.E.L.D., which means we have to dismantle it. However, there's no telling who we can trust apart from Coulson, Fury and Rodgers."
"Let me make some calls. I know a few people." Clark replied, as they headed towards the house. He knew Dom and the team would help, but that wasn't enough. No, they were just the beginning.
