A/N: Wow so I just got back into reading some fanfiction and decided to come back to this story. I really want to finish it up by the end of the summer. I honestly can't remember if Caroline was a vampire when I started writing this, so she's a vampire now for the rest of the story. Please R&R
Damon sits in one of the guest rooms the Elders have provided him with. He watches the scar on his risk heal from the cut Luca had made. They'd taken some of his blood for good ness knows what. He's drinking and thinking. Stubborn little witch, won't believe anything he says now, oh please you idiot you did this to her! You told her you loved Elena and not her, I was scared! I'd destroy her…well you are destroying her, literally killing her…
Damon hears the door open and expecting Stefan to be there, he is surprised to see Elena. She sits beside him on the bed and takes his hand "we need to talk" she quietly says.
Meanwhile…
Luca knocks and enters Bonnie's room, she's sitting on the floor meditating. She stops when she sees Luca enter. Luca hands her a mug "drink this" he says. Bonnie is tired and doesn't even question him. She takes the mug and drinks, she tastes herbs, and something familiar. As soon as the concoction slides down her throat she feels so much better. She feels her magic began to glow with life again. "What is this?" She says standing up suddenly full of energy. Luca sighs, not sure if he should tell her its Damon's blood. He decides to wait, "just some herbs and stuff…" thankfully Bonnie doesn't ask any further questions. Instead she chants a spell at the knife sitting on her bed and the knife glows and erupts in flames, now the blade is engulfed in fire, a weapon, she's finally able to enchant weapons. Bonnie smiles and so does Luca.
Back to Damon…
"Why did you lie to Bonnie, about loving me? I know you're not in love with me Damon" Elena softly speaks. She's trying to stay calm and not show her anger and frustration. She just needs the truth; needs to understand why he broke her best friend's heart. Damon takes another swig of his drink and feels the warm liquid slide down his throat and sighs heavily. The only way they can get through this is honesty. "Because I don't deserve her. I'm…" Damon struggles with the right words. "…unworthy of her". Elena takes in a deep breath at the huge revelation Damon has revealed. "She deserves better; it was easier to tell her my feelings for you hadn't changed…easier to let her go that way". Elena just nods, she understands Damon internal struggles and why he lied to Bonnie. "You know I'd never seen the two of you happier than when you were together. You made her stronger and she made you happy. I know Bonnie and I know you Damon. You two were good together. I know you'd never hurt her or break her heart. Please Damon, you have to talk to Bonnie." Damon sighed standing up and finishing his drink. "Don't you think I've tried! She's a stubborn little witch…she-" "is heartbroken" Elena says. Damon's mouth closes and he has no words because Elena's truth feels like a heavy weight on his heart.
Bonnie feels well enough to cast barrier spells that night, adding extra protection to the house. She stands outside and feels her magic swirl around the house. She still feels tired but not as exhausted as she did before. She feels the magic wrap around the simple orange maxi dress she's wearing. This place is magical; she's never felt so much magic in the air. She's never felt more in her element than being here in this town.
Damon steps outside and watches Bonnie chant. She looks better, her checks have more color and she seems to have more energy. "Hey" seems to be the only thing he can muster to say to her. Ugh Lame, Damon thinks as Bonnie turns to see him walking down the porch steps. Bonnie looks up and sees Damon walking towards her. He's not wearing his signature smirk and he's lost that annoying twinkle in his eyes. She looks at him in his black jeans and plain v neck white shirt. He looks so…human…so vulnerable. Bonnie gives a weak "hey" in response. "This is the part where I ask, what's a nice girl like you doing in a town like this…" Damon jokes, his laugh doesn't reach his eyes and the sadness that's laced in his voice brings Bonnie's energy down. She feels his sadness, feels his weakness and vulnerability. Damon takes the last step on the porch and sits and watches Bonnie walk towards him.
"Damon, I'm going to fix this. Don't worry…I know your in pain too…I'm going to-" Damon stands up and pulls Bonnie towards him "I don't care about my pain you stubborn witch…I care about yours. I'm worried about you…we're all worried about you" Damon says slowly, as he stares intently into Bonnie eyes trying to make her understand. Bonnie looks away from Damon's eyes. She doesn't need them to worry about her. Just this Bill Compton character. That should be their concern not her. How they were going to defeat him. The same as it was with Klaus, she had to protect them.
"Bonnie we don't need you to protect us. We need to protect you…I need to protect you" Damon says. Tears well in Bonnie's eyes. She doesn't understand. Theres a threat coming for them, they should be focused on that, not on her. "Bonnie" Damon says softly as he takes his thumb to wipe away one of her tears. "Your worth fighting for…your worth dying for" Damon says, and takes the same hand that had been on her cheek and places it under her chin. The emotional roller coaster that sweeps through her mind is too much to process. The feeling that people would put their lives on the line for her feels…wrong.
She pushes Damon away and walks a few steps backwards. "Why?!" she screams at him, at the house, at everyone she supposes. Why would people do this for her. "Why wouldn't we?!" Damon equally screams back. Always and forever a stubborn little witch. He takes a deep breath and says more calmly "why wouldn't I?" Damon says. "No..no" Bonnie says through her tears. "Bonnie…" Damon is at lost for words as he begans to realize the epic tragic story that is Bonnie Bennet. Always seeing herself as the tag along friend to Elena and Caroline, never really feeling comfortable with herself, only feeling useful and worthy when she was helping others, or sacrificing herself to big bad vampires and hybrids.
"I'm not…I don't…" Bonnie looks around at the huge front yard and the gates down the hill of the enormous drive way. Anywhere but at Damon staring at her with this hysterical look on his face. Like he can't seem to process something. Damon rushes to her at vampire speed and grabs her by the arms, softly shaking her. "Bonnie, your amazing, your beautiful, and your worth everything. Your worth fighting for." Tears well in Bonnie's eyes. She feels his truthfulness. "Your worth me breaking this world in two and going to hell and back for you. Bonnie Bennett I'd die a thousand times for you, because I love you. More than I've loved Katherine or Elena or any other person that's walked this earth. I thought I was unworthy of you Bonnie, let me prove my worthiness to you, by fighting for you. Fighting for you in this battle, and fighting for your heart that I should've never let go."
Speechless. Bonnie has no words to convey her emotions at Damon's confession. She opens and closes her mouth, but only sobs seem to escape. She doesn't even realize she's still crying. Damon pulls her to his chest, holding her tight as Bonnie's sobs become louder and she's a crying, shaking mess and Damon just holds her. Holds her until she feels his conviction to be her savior, to be her hero, to be her everything. She doesn't need to do this alone, she doesn't need to sacrifice herself, she needs to feel safe and protected. Bonnie has never felt so loved, so protected. She didn't think she was worthy of such love, such devotion. But she feels Damon's sincerity, through their bond she knows he speaks the truth.
"Damn" is all Caroline can muster to say as her and Elena stand at the front window overlooking the porch and front lawn. With her heightened hearing she gives Elena snap shots of what Damon said. They hadn't intended to spy on them, they'd honestly gone looking for Bonnie, when Elena saw her outside talking to Bonnie. She wasn't sure what Damon had said because she just saw Bonnie walking backwards, Elena was about to go outside afraid that he'd upset her again, when Caroline stopped her. Even though the moment was obviously private and intimate, they couldn't stop themselves from watching. They'd known Damon and Bonnie had been together, but seeing them like this. Seeing Damon look at Bonnie look she was the most precious thing in the world, was…intense. Tears come to Caroline's eyes, Bonnie deserves someone to love her like that, and if that person is Damon, well then so be it.
