The initial hints of Winter had begun, as the evidence outside shows. Fresh cold Winter snow began to collect on the grounds around me. The fresh smell of wet dew began to fill my senses. I walked down a slippery wet sidewalk. I compacted myself with fresh winter clothing so I could conserve most of my internal homeostasis. The feeling of energy in my body swept from underneath me as I kept trudging along the thick icy path. Eventually, I made my way to the destination I had been longing to greet. I opened the sheltering glass door and entered the quite shop. The door slammed in the wind behind me giving away the evidence of my arrival to the entire shop. Well shuffling my way to the nearest empty seat, I began looking around hoping to find the person I was hoping for. Eventually, my eyes began to dart towards the lovely waitress behind the counter. Crossing my arms, I began to watch her frantically fulfill orders she had sought out from her antagonistic customers. I took my gaze from her and glued it to the tv beside me. I watched the weather report in amazement. Apparently, a terrible horrific storm was just underway towards my designated location. I began to worry about the fear of being trapped. My mind slowly was lost in the world of my imagination as I was unable to hear the small voice of a delicate looking red robin. She had snapped me from my dreadful haunting thoughts.
"Hello Mordecai!" she said cheerfully. My gaze quickly snapped away from the mindless box of sound and picture. I looked at her albeit rather in a trance. I sat there and stared at her most perfect features. I stuttered my words in bewilderment which she let out a small giggle to.
"Ho-How've you been? I can't believe this, I've known her for almost four weeks now and I can't even get my words out formally. I began to frantically look around the table for an object to alter my focus on.
"I've been good!" she replied albeit curious as to why I was gazing around the table. Finding nothing to occupy myself with, I mustered up the courage and faced her yet again. "What about you?" she asked me curiously.
"I've been pretty good!" I replied cheerfully. My nervousness had dissolved and faded away leaving behind a surge of encouragement in my voice. "Listen, I was going to ask what you were doing for Christmas?" I shrugged my shoulders at her, eager for her to reply.
"Not much, why?" she asked with a hint of enthusiasm leaking from her voice.
"Well... I was wondering if maybe... I don't know... you wanna do something together?" I asked her albeit rather awkwardly. I moved my hands around in the air and made weird gestures to her. She looked at me weirdly, concerned for my sanity. I took a mental note later on to facepalm myself after this whole ordeal was over.
"Sure that's fine!" She said excitedly. She looked like she was standing on her toes with excitement.
"Great I'll pick you up then!" I said with the most nonchalant voice I could muster.
"See you then!" She waved at me as she walked away.
Christmas Eve
Cold bitter air struck my feathered body like a gun as I trudged my way towards the place she called home. Every step I took felt like a surge of energy was being collected from my now worn-out body. I began to see the faint outline of a bright object looming in the distance. As I trudged onward, the light began to focus itself through the dense fog. The burning, bright, orange light was connected to what appeared to be a warm sheltering house. I examined the fine looking house and began to trudge my way towards the door step. I peeked inside the folded blinds of the lit up house and examined the contents that lay inside. Once I thoroughly examined it, I began to pound my fist upon the cold battered door. I heard the faint sound of footsteps leaking through the house. I waited in anticipation as the door flung open, revealing the beautiful red robin of whom I was searching for. I greeted her with a friendly hug.
"Wassup!" I shouted in excitement as the warmth of her body fueled my core. I let loose of my tight embrace for fear of freaking her out. She looked rather stunned by my actions, but reluctantly passed them up.
"Hey Mordecai!" she greeted with a warm smile. "I thought you weren't coming till tomorrow?" she changed the subject.
"I was... but I really had nothing better to do." I admitted in defeat. The only purpose I was standing at her doorstep was because I was a staling lonesome being. I quickly reached into my warm coat pocket but was stopped by her.
"Why don't you come in then?" she asked, concerned for my health. "It seems awfully cold out." she added with a caring smile. I reluctantly stepped foot in the warm, good smelling house. I felt the warm air caress through my worn out feathers and heat my inner core.
"Thank you!" I thanked her for the warm welcome. "As much as I surprised you, I thought I'd run to the store and pick you up something." I smiled as I reached in my coat pocket, feeling for the paper tied box that had been secretly sealed from her sight. I pulled out the lovely looking box that was tied in a white springy bow and showed it to her. She eyed it in pure shock. I smiled at her as she took it from my limp grasp.
"Merry Christmas." I muttered, barely audible for her to hear. I watched as she slowly examined the bow tied box in her hands. She quickly grabbed the white strings and tugged away at the strong fabric. She eyed the box suspiciously before opening it, revealing its contents to her vision. She took a step back from the place I stood. I waited for her to hopefully give a positive reply. She slowly pulled out the sterling silver coated necklace that had once been in the box. She examined it only to find much more than she expected. She examined the glowing moonstone gem that was tied to the necklace. She took her gaze off of the necklace in her hands and gazed upon me in pure shock. Margaret had no words for she was stunned by the most precious gift she had received all year.
"How much was this?" She demanded to me. I froze in place, almost hurt by her sudden questioning.
"It was nothing, really." I fake chuckled. I was now in pure shock and actual fear began to arise through me.
"No really I'd like to know!" she demanded again.
"Three hundred." I muttered. My teeth were clenched and my feet were rooted to the floor below me.
"Why'd you spend so much on me?" She questioned.
"Because I wanted you to have something equally beautiful as you are." I admitted smoothly. Her gaze was glued on mine in pure shock and happiness, as she literally hurled herself into my warm battered wings. She caught me off guard and I fell like a brick wall towards the floor. However, I was caught by a soft cushioned pillow. The cushioned fabric began to form around my body as I collapsed upon it. I felt her light body weight land upon mine as she cooly stared into my eyes. She let out a small giggle and coiled her arms around my neck. She tilted her head slightly and dipped her head down towards me. She gave me one seductive look before closing the gap between our beaks. We both closed our eyes and gave way to the hypnotizing feeling known as love. Our beaks parted before she whispered two little words into my ears.
"Merry Christmas!" she giggled. I watched as her soft downy hands began to trace through my neck feathers. The feeling of her touch sent waves of pure euphoria down my spinal column. I mumbled in delight as she began to move her fingers slowly down to my beating chest. A feeling of nervousness washed over me. I could tell she felt my pulse as she began to slowly retreat from my limp seduced body. "I'm sorry." she mumbled, "I got carried away." she drew her gaze from mine and planted it on the bare wall. I felt a pain of guilt wash over me as I stared at her cold saddened figure. I picked myself up and slowly scooted my way towards Margaret.
"Its I who should be apologizing." I muttered enunciating every word with sorrow. "I'm just nervous, and sometimes I begin to freak out." I distracted myself by staring down at the cushion of the couch we were both sitting on. "I'm a total loser at this whole relationship thing." I gestured my hands up in the air in defeat.
"What are you talking about?" she eyed me with a look of disgust. A cold hardened feeling began to envelope my heart, as I slowly began to recover from her dark words. I felt a pain shatter against my right cheek. A horrible pain sent my neck and head hurling backwards. A feeling of pure shock washed over me as I titled my gaze back into focus. I felt my right cheek in fear. A hot stinging feeling began to spread around my cheek. "Don't you ever say that!" she scolded as she pointed right at me. Still recovering, I began to gaze at her saddened look. "I-I'm sorry." she muttered well her body trembled in fear. She slowly put her hand up to her mouth in shock at what had just occurred. "Morde- I didn't mean..." She began to cry wet tears of guilt. My mouth was gaped wide open as I watched her cower away from me, as if she was scared I was going to hit her back. I began to reprocess what had just occurred. It was all happy and lovely at first. I watched as she grabbed my limp shoulders and looked me straight in the eye. I watched a tear fall from her soft cheeks and plummet on the floor below. "I'm so sorry!" she yelled guiltily. I grabbed her hands and placed them upon my shoulders and slowly pulled her into a huge bear hug. I rubbed her back instinctively, trying to soothe her.
"It's okay, you didn't mean it." I said softly into her ear. I made shushing noises towards her and rocked her gently in my grasp.
"I'm such a freak." her voice was muffled do to her mouth buried in my neck.
"No your not." I petted the back of her head well playing with her soft hair, which she let out a pleasurable sigh to. I grabbed her shoulders and gently pushed her away. I looked her straight in the eyes. Her eyes were full of guilted sadness. I didn't have the courage to watch her hate herself more. "Your not a freak!" I began calmly. "I promise that nothing you say or do will hurt me." I added. Margaret slowly reached up to dry her tears but I stopped her with my feathered hand. I smiled and quickly dried her salty cheeks. "What do you say we go out?" I asked her as I started to stand up. I outstretched my warm hand to her.
"Where do you want to go?" She asked well grabbing my hand. I pulled her up with relative ease and I began to walk her to the door.
"Wherever our decisions lead us!" I mysteriously replied with a quick wink.
The long walk mostly consisted of us holding hands, warm smiles, and lost of talking. Surprisingly the air around us seemed to warm up a little. I couldn't comprehend if it was the joy of company that warmed my core, or the weather was just nice. All in all it was a better experience of a walk than the one before. The sounds around us were bittersweet, consisting of laughter, joy, and heartwarming stories.
"Christmas is my favorite holiday!" Margaret implied well making explosion gestures with her hands to show how much delight the day brought her.
"My favorite Holiday is any day I spend with you!" I nudged her right shoulder playfully. She giggled well quickly regaining her balance before shoving me off the sidewalk. I watched in panic as the padding below me became slippery causing my feet to loose grip of the security of the sidewalk . I watched the blur of colors obscure my vision as I tumbled down to the cold white blanket of snow. I landed back first into the cold unforgiving pile of wet built up liquid. I clenched my teeth together as the unforgiving pain of numbness washed over me. I gazed upward to greet the eyes of my laughing significant other.
"Oh, you think that's funny!?" I questioned timidly as I began to stand up. I let her bittersweet, honey like laughter fill my ears and fill me with pure bliss. I laughed sarcastically and began to bend down. I packed the white cold substance in my cold feathered hands and sent it hurling towards her right shoulder. Margaret was still in a laughing fit and was not able to comprehend the targeted cold missile I had fired at her. I watched as the snowball hit her right shoulder causing the snow remains to fly every which way.
"Why'd you do that?" She screamed in pure shock and surprise at what had just hit her. Once she had put two and two together she began to grow an evil grin.
"Oh, it is so on!" I watched as her gaze slowly met mine. I couldn't help but feel guilty on the inside, but on the outside I was a laughing mess. I quickly bent down to grab another shot to fire but was met with a cold blow to the neck. Quickly, I shielded myself as best as I could with my large feathered arm and quickly began to acquire ammunition. Blow after blow kept on hitting me, keeping my ammunition manufacturing to a minimal. I fired away without even acquiring my targets coordinates, firing blindly in the directions I thought she was in. What led to a playful attack was now a full on world war. I laughed light heartedly as she began to trudge her way towards me. I stood up and sprinted with all the strength my cold numb legs could muster. I ran straight at my enemy. I tackled her body playfully and brought her down into the cold unforgiving snow. I laughed as we both rolled around in the cold hard ground. I let Margaret's laughter fill my ears and coarse through my cerebellum. I opened my eyes and met her playful seductive gaze. A warm smile began to form on her face. I closed my eyes and met her lips in a passionate kiss. I let the feeling of warmth wash over my body and fill my innards with joy. I wrapped my arms around her in a loving embrace, as I slowly picked her up off the cold ground and ended the kiss for I was out of breath. Maragret slowly opened her eyes to meet mine. She smiled light heartedly at me and let out a small giggle.
"I always wanted to do that, truthfully!" I smiled at her.
"Me too!" she laughed. "That was fun!" she added. "I'm kind of cold though." Margaret shivered in disgust.
"Let me take you home." I offered. I stretched my wing around her and began to slowly warm her body up. Although the walk home was not as pleasant as leaving it due to or obvious war we went through, it was still great to have each others company and warmth. We both opened the door with a loud bang and ran inside. I closed the door behind us and began to shiver uncontrollably.
"Okay maybe a snowball fight was not a good idea!" I laughed at my stupid idea.
Margaret laughed before asking, "Yea, do you want some coffee or hot chocolate Mordecai!?"
I felt my numb body before quickly replying,"Yes please!" I began to contemplate how a nice hot chocolate would feel to my senses. It wasn't long before my gaze was met with a large warm mug landing in front of me. "Thank you!" I thanked her and happily sipped down on my hot drink. "You're the best!" I set my cup down and began to feel the warm liquid pouring down my throat. it sent shudders through my body as I felt the feeling of warmth spread throughout my body. I began to distract myself by gazing around her humble abode. My eyes were met with colorful paintings, green leafed plants, and red and blue flowers, spreading throughout her house. I examined the couch I'm front of my with a warm silk blanket draped upon it. I got up and limped my way towards the cushioned furniture. I slowly draped the fabric over my worn out body and let the wave of exhaustion wash over me. Margaret soon entered the room with a mug of her own coiled in her grasp. I smiled at her, not being able to take my eyes off the lovely goddess that lay before me. She eyed me mischievously before attacking me on the couch. She quickly set her mug down and fell upon my body. My outstretched arms formed around her curvatures completely as I held her tenderly.
"What are you doing?" I questioned with a evident smile upon my face.
"I'm cold." she probed. I reached for the ends of the blanket and draped it over her. Margaret let out a small sigh before burring her head in the crook of my neck. A new feeling began to creep upon me. I watched as my vision deteriorated, leaving behind nothing but blackness. I let out one small sigh before gently drifting off into the world of dreams.
