Chapter 10
Olivia was given a black t-shirt to wear as a nightgown before going to bed that evening. She looked down at the shirt and wondered aloud, "What's Def Leppard, Jackie?"
Jackie replied getting the cot ready, "Def Leppard was a rock band…A music group." She pulled back the covers and smoothed the sheet, "Hop in peanut."
Olivia climbed into bed and settled down. She found she liked her older sister Jackie for the girl seemed to astute to her needs. She wondered, "What kind of music did they play?"
She replied, "Rock and roll. You know Rock of Ages!"
"I don't," she told her.
She reached up and retrieved a radio with a cassette player. She spoke, "I have a tape here." She pushed play but nothing happened. "Batteries are dead?" she wondered. She turned it over and opened the access panel. She found one of the batteries had leaked and corroded the inside. She let out a sigh, "Radio is ruined now. I'll have to fix it later."
Olivia then took the radio in her hands and concentrated. She wanted to hear the music and assumed everyone knew of her gift. The temperature suddenly dropped in the room but not to freezing. The cassette player began to play.
"Gunter, Glieben, Glausen, Globen…Alright…I got something to say…It's better to burn out than fade away…" the song began.
Jackie removed the radio from her hands and suddenly the music stopped. She cocked an eyebrow, "How did you do that peanut?"
"I can suck the energy out of the air and put it where it needs to be," she tried to explain. "Mommy said it's because I was exposed to something before I was born and it made me different."
She placed the radio back in her hands and tape began to play again.
"Gonna start a fire. Rise up gather around, rock this place to the ground," the song started again.
Jackie removed the player once more and it stopped. She figured, "You are a walking human battery."
"I am?" she asked for no one ever explained it to her like that.
"You noticed the temperature dropped?" she asked.
"That always happens," she explained.
"That's you sucking up the energy right out of the air." she told her. "You have to be very careful who you show this ability. Imagine what a Goa'uld could do if they took you as a host." she warned her.
"In the future I was fighting the Gin with it," she informed.
"The Gin?" Jackie asked, "Future?"
"I'm from the future. Mommy sent me back in time. I guess I have to grow up and get bigger so I can fight the Gin when they come." she told her.
"What is the Gin?" Jackie pressed.
"They suck up the energy, when they are near it feels like electricity, like a bad static shock right before you get zapped. They are not very nice. They scare me. Sometimes they are invisible. Sometimes they look human but they are not human. They have black eyes. Daniel told me they are more like demons." she recalled.
"Demons are real?" she asked.
She nodded, "They are called the Gin. Selmak said it took all four races to defeat them. But now all we have left is the Nox and the Asgard and it's not gonna be enough."
"Can these Gin cross realities like you did?" she wondered.
"I don't know," she admitted. "Can you read me a story? I don't like talking about the Gin."
Jackie placed the radio down, "What story would you like to hear?"
"A happy ending," she requested.
She rose to her feet and grabbed her favorite book from the nearby shelf. She then grabbed a chair and pulled it up to Olivia's cot. She took a seat, "Robin Hood and His Merry Men!" she grinned.
Olivia settled in under the covers as Jackie began to read from the very first page.
Few Hours Later
Jack had taken watch that evening at the entrance to the shelter. His son, Charlie had been with him as he took the time to spend with his father for he understood Jack and SG-1 would have to go back home through the mirror.
Charlie asked, "Remember mom's brownies?"
He nodded, "She would put tiny chocolate chips in them." He took a sip of coffee.
"Those were good," Charlie recalled. "With ice cream…" he tailed off. "I haven't had ice cream since the invasion."
"Seems supplies are limited," Jack agreed. He glanced over at Charlie's rifle, "Let me see that?"
Charlie handed the weapon over.
He inspected the rifle, "30-30, huh? Why all the lever actions?"
"George gave them to us," he stated. "They were from his house. I guess he collected them. He tried to match up what would be best. He gave Sheppard the 44 and the revolver. He gave me and June each a 30-30. He gave Jackie 30-06, he gave Liz the 357, she can also use 38 special in it…"
Jack wondered, "Why not bust into an armory and get a few M-16's?"
"Our guys went down fast Dad," he explained. "The NATO rounds were useless. We had to go to hunting rifles. It's the only thing that could make an impact on the armor." He then added, "Ra then had all the armories destroyed after he took control. There isn't anything left."
"There has to be something left," he countered. "Heavy artillery…"
"Who is gonna use it, Dad?" he asked him. "Liz told me her estimates on the global population. Before the invasion we had nearly 7 billion people. Now we have about 500 thousand. Ra's biggest discovery is robots. He loves robots. They can be programmed to do whatever you want and they don't fight back. I think that's the reason he went after our Sam…she knows how to build and program machines."
"So does my Sam," he slowly nodded.
They sat in silence as Jack realized they simply did not have the manpower and were in a losing war. He looked up at the sky wondering if there was some kind of help out there that he could contact but with no Gate he figured his options were running out. He took another sip of coffee and for a moment admired the beauty and calm of the night sky.
Charlie sipped his own coffee and then changed the subject. He told him, "She's a good choice."
Jack looked over at him. He too was looking up at the stars and the moonlight gleamed off his young face. "What?" he asked unsure of what Charlie was speaking.
"Sam," he nodded. "I mean if you and mom divorced or if mom died in your reality then I would have approved of her. She's a good choice. Jackie and I both like her. June is like a sister to us. I'm sure if we have an Olivia she would be like a sister to us too."
"Thanks," he gave the boy a nod.
"Mom is alive in your reality, right?" he confirmed.
"Yeah," he nodded.
"When you get back home tell I love and I miss her." he stated.
Jack got an idea, "How about you come with me and tell her yourself?"
"I can't leave my sister and George behind." he disagreed.
Jack figured, "We can bring your sister."
"George, John and Liz?" he asked expecting. He gave him a look, "We also have a doctor who is on a supply run. Does Janet finally get back and finds that no one is here?"
Jack asked, "Janet Frasier by any chance?"
He cocked his head and described her, "About my height, red hair and can take on an alligator with a needle if pissed off enough."
He smirked, "So you have one too! When is she due to be back?"
"If no trouble then by tomorrow morning," he figured.
Jack sipped his cup as a smirk came across his face, "Can't wait to see your Frasier."
Meanwhile
The mirror from the treasury had been brought to the throne room onboard the mothership that sat in the middle of what was once the capital. Two golden thrones sat side by side. Ra looked over at his queen, Hathor who was woken from her slumber in her Egyptian tomb. She had taken Dr. Samantha Carter's body. She donned the most elegant silk and gold threaded gowns any Goa'uld queen could wish for. Upon the guards leaving the room Ra spoke to his wife. "Have your host tell us what this does."
Hathor could not access Dr. Carter's knowledge on her own for Dr. Carter's mind was much stronger than most. She allowed Dr. Carter to speak only in the presence of Ra.
Dr. Carter stated, "I have a good idea what it is but I'll be dammed if I'm telling the two of you."
Hathor huffed, "You will do as we say host."
Dr. Carter shook her head for she had limited movement under the Goa'uld's control. She stated, "Screw you, Heather."
"It's Hathor!" she huffed annoyed. Her host was most uncooperative at times and that annoyed the Queen.
"Whatever," she rebutted. "I'm not helping you and your idiot husband. You two morons can figure it out on your own. Of course, we both you can't because despite the whole 'I'm a god' thing you are both nothing more than a couple of self-loathing snakes who can frankly kiss my ass."
"Silence," Hathor snorted and the eyes glowed. She then deemed, "You will help us." She knew Dr. Carter had one weakness and that was her daughter. She would find and collect June Carter and if Dr. Carter refused she would have girl tortured until she finally agreed to help.
Next Day
Jack O'Neill worked best under pressure. He had a rare gift for he would be at his best when times were at their worst and he found himself in a world where conditions were optimal for Jack to use his full capabilities as a solider and strategist. He could not leave his son's world at the mercy of the Goa'uld. He could not leave Dr. Samantha Carter a host and he could not leave his son in a world with no hope. He didn't sleep at all during the night. He had Charlie go to bed early and remained on watch. With the rising sun he was greeted by Dr. Janet Frasier and her armed escort…Walter Harriman. The pair arrived on bicycles towing a red wagon filled with medical supplies. Jack merely told them he was new for neither recognized him in the new reality. He led them inside and then found George cooking breakfast for everyone in the kitchen.
He approached George as the man cooked. "George!" he stated as he placed his rifle down in the corner.
George glanced over, "Jack! Get me some flour for biscuits. I heard Janet and Walter are back from their run."
"Yup," he nodded getting flour out of the container. He brought over the flour and placed it on the counter. He casually mentioned, "I can go back through the mirror, get a suitcase size nuke, plant it on Ra's ship and all we have to do is get him to leave and…No more Ra."
George asked, "How would you get him to leave?"
Jack thought, "Massive uprising of the slaves."
"Not enough slaves Jack," he told him. "I already thought of doing that. Logistically, we just don't have the manpower." He then confessed, "I do have a plan. I have one of those suitcase size nukes in my possession. You take the kids back to your reality and they we set that off in his ship. That will end Ra, the kids will have a new home and we destroy that mirror so those kids do not come back trying to save us old folks."
"There has to be a better way," Jack chocked for the plan George recited was his last ditch effort plan to save the kids.
"We're too far gone," he shook his head. "Now, let's get those biscuits made."
Meanwhile
Olivia was in her bunkroom making her bed. She actually felt like home living in a shelter than the SGC due to the similar circumstances. June was in the showers and Jackie had taken guard duty for Jack and her brother. Olivia found herself alone for a few minutes as she got ready for breakfast. She heard Daniel's voice.
"Olivia," Daniel spoke.
She looked over and found himself standing next to her. She grinned, "You made it through the mirror too!"
He squatted down beside her and looked in the eye, "No, I don't need the mirror. The ethos dividing realities is easily traversed by the Ascended, as well as the Gin. I have a plan to save both realities, Dr. Carter and give you the power you will need to fight the Gin if Adria doesn't help us."
She cheered, "Okay! What do we do?"
"First you need to get Hathor out of Dr. Carter…your mother's alternate self in this reality…June's mom. You have to do it, you can used energy from the air, absorb it and then charge it like a magnet and then pull Hathor out. It won't be easy because Hathor will kick and scream the entire time. It will be hard to watch but it must be done. Then, after Dr. Carter if free she and our Sam have to work together on the mirror to reverse the polarity on each end at the same time. What that will do is blend the two realities together. I know how it sounds and the physics behind it is decades ahead but it has to be done. You mom will mistakenly think that blending the realities will cancel the realities out and destroy both but it will do just the opposite due to a matter called ethos. Ethos is the key and can switch its own properties depending on need. It's like…glue."
"Like Elmer's glue?" she wondered.
He gave an assuring smile, "Like Elmer's glue. Now, Ra has the mirror in his throne room. So, getting access is gonna be harder. George Hammond has a special bomb that can be planted on Ra's ship while we free Dr. Carter from Hathor and get the mirror. Then Sam and Sam work on the mirror in each reality to reverse the polarity, that will make the ethos blend the realities into one. What will happen are those who are alive in both realities become one person with two sets of memories. No one will die! They just combine into one person. Then Ra will find himself surrounded by a fully functioning military. Ra's forces are depleted from six years of occupation. He will run and fighters will be launched to attack. Once the ship is in high orbit they can detonate the bomb and it will be destroyed."
Olivia asked, "But how does all that help me fight the Gin?"
"Ethos is what you are actually absorbing," he explained. "If you blend two realities into one the ethos becomes more concentrated and you become more powerful. Gin use ethos as a mechanism to travel, they don't use it the way you can and ethos can be charged to destroy a Gin. You will be able to actually kill a Gin, not just deflect it."
"Oh," she stated trying to figure out just what he told her.
He gave a sigh, "I know this is a lot and if we blend the realities they will send me back for sure. I already upset the others when I called them cowards when Oma made a huge mistake and was tricked into ascending Anubis. Now, Anubis also knows about the ethos and will be more powerful but his arrogance has no bounds and you can help me stop him. So, here's the plan: we get Hathor out of Dr. Carter's head, we then use the mirror to reverse the polarities combining the realities and we force Ra to flee, blowing up his ship in the process. Ya got that?"
Livy went over to her footlocker and picked up a stack of papers and a box of crayons, "I need to write this down, Uncle Daniel!"
