Touch Me Not
Chapter 9
The demon, after a moment of scrutinizing its target, held an arm before its chest as a duelist would. A sharp blade, with glowing slots reminiscent of a duel-disk, emerged from the armor encasing the said arm. A fierce glow erupted from one of the slots and, before Rafael could even process what happened, a blue demon that looked like a cross between a hairless Neanderthal and a dinosaur with an attack power of one thousand and defense of one hundred burst through the ground, the Seal of Orichalcos* glowing on its forehead and raising its mediocre attack power to fifteen hundred.
That thing just summoned a monster! Rafael realized. With a frown he turned to where Dartz stood.
The CEO of Paradius Inc. returned his glare with one that's as cold as ice. "Orichalcos Alpha*!" Dartz commanded, an arm held out before him. "Send the Nameless Pharaoh to his doom!"
With a roar, the new arrival charged at its target. Before he could think, Rafael, having back-pedaled from the Pharaoh a moment ago, propelled himself forward. Using one arm to hoist the debilitated king by the waist, he managed to get themselves out of harm's way seconds before the monster's fist came crashing down.
"SHIT!" Valon roared, slamming a fist against the Seal's barrier. Though he expected the man to act noble, he had honestly hoped that he would leave the Pharaoh to his fate. "RAFAEL!" He started pounding against the barrier, ignoring the jolt of pain running up his arm from every blow he threw as he helplessly watched his closest friend gone suicidal. "Don' be stupid, mate!" Seeing that the blonde wasn't acknowledging his words, "YO RAFAEL!" he screamed as he continued pounding against the barrier.
Taking on a defensive stance as the Orichalcos Alpha turned to face them, Rafael tightened his grip on the king. Valon's incessant screaming and pounding was giving him a headache. It was difficult for him to focus on the task at hand,
A task he himself didn't understand…
"Tha' thing only wants da Pharaoh, Raf! NO' YOU!"
Rafael flinched as Valon's voice pierced his ears. He looked down at the helpless monarch in his grasp. The latter had a pinched look on his face, eyes half-closed from the pain his now bleeding wounds were causing.
'What the hell am I doing?!'
"For once, you should listen to Valon." Rafael turned to Dartz upon hearing his silky tone. "The Nameless Pharaoh is the only target here," he explained. "But both Orichalcos Soldier and Orichalcos Alpha will not hesitate to destroy you should you get in the way," he added darkly.
Rafael averted his gaze from his lord, his posture tense and heart pounding…
'The Nameless Pharaoh's the target. Not me…'
He swallowed heavily as his mind waged war with himself…
'Why am I standing in the way?'
Yet his grip on the king didn't relent…
'Why am I risking my life for him?!'
To be honest, he didn't know. However, ever since they had captured the Pharaoh and took turns to watch, something had been nagging him at the back of his mind…
Were they really the good guys?
"RAFAEL, WATCH OUT!"
Amelda's warning managed to snap Rafael out of his musings. The latter managed to dodge the monster that tried to grab him.
"You FOOL!" Dartz roared. "After everything we've accomplished, you're BETRAYING DOMA NOW?!"
The accusation had impregnated the chamber with a deafening silence. Rafael froze in his tracks.
"I see why the Orichalcos told me to obtain a new Swordsman," Dartz stated soberly. Pointing an accusatory finger at Rafael, "It isn't to add another. Rather, it is to replace a traitor!" he announced. He made a dramatic sweep with his arm while his eyes pulsed with an emotion no words could explain.
"No!" Rafael interjected, nearly dropping the king. "I would never betray DOMA's cause!"
"Then let the Seal have the Pharaoh!"
His mouth suddenly dry, Rafael focused his gaze on his charge. As much as he wanted to just let the Orichalcos Alpha kill the king and fulfil the mission he and many others had been working their whole lives on, he just couldn't. Something was holding him back, telling him—screaming at him—that murdering the Pharaoh was just crossing the line.
"I can't!" he shouted, the word taking much effort to voice out. "Not like this!" he specified, using his free hand to gesture around him. He flinched upon hearing the other demon's roar. He was prepared for another attack to come his way, but (fortunately) Orichalcos Alpha remained where it was.
"What are you talking about?!" Dartz barked. He was tempted to have the Orichalcos Alpha kill Rafael, all sentiments pushed aside; but a glance at the other Swordsmen told him that that wasn't a good idea.
He was well aware that his three Swordsmen had a bond that rivalled that of blood brothers. The younger two always saw Rafael as an older brother. The blonde was basically the glue that held the three of them together. Without him, they would surely fall apart. He couldn't risk all his Swordsmen's loyalty. He still needed them,
for now…
Rafael struggled to find words. As he racked his brain, his eyes darted from one face to another. Finally, it settled on the Pharaoh's. Taking a deep breath, "Aren't we fighting for the greater good?" he mused aloud.
Dartz pinched the bridge of his nose and shook his head. "Now is not the time to have a moral crisis!" he implored, annoyance evident in his tone. "But if it will make you stand down, then I assure you, our cause is just."
"Then, can't we obtain the Pharaoh's soul in a manner that represents our cause?"
A scoff. "And what manner do you propose?"
"One that isn't pathetic and disgraceful! Like murdering a helpless target!"
Dartz closed his eyes and released an exasperated sigh.
'Typical Rafael…'
"That helpless target has been the cause of so much evil!" Dartz seethed, his temper reaching new heights. "Why else would he be sealed away? Why else would his own people wipe his existence from history?!"An accusatory finger was pointed at the Pharaoh. "I guarantee you, that king is the most evil creature in existence! Perhaps he couldn't handle that fact, hence why he erased his own memories!"
Rafael avoided his lord's gaze. He felt the Pharaoh twitch in his grasp and he was sure the whimper the king emitted wasn't a figment of his imagination. "But—"
"If you don't stand down this instant, I won't hesitate to have you killed as well!" Dartz practically screamed out. He had little to no tolerance for those who questioned his orders, no matter how valuable they were to his cause. As for those who defied his orders, Rafael was a hair's breadth away from finding out. "Stand down, NOW!"
The warning was accompanied by the Alpha's roar. Rafael took a step back, his eyes adhered to the murderous beast. He noticed that he was trembling; and, looking down, he found that he still had his hunting knife locked in a tight (and shaking) grip.
"RAFAEL!"
He turned his frightened gaze to his comrades. Their expressions weren't that different from his.
"RAFAEL, MATE!" Valon roared, hands placed against the Seal. "Jus stan' down!" he practically begged.
"He isn't kidding, Raf!" Amelda added, an uncharacteristic look of concern etched on his face. "Dartz means business!"
Rafael dropped his gaze to the duel-disk encasing his wrist. Like the other Swordsmen, he received it when he was deemed worthy by the Orichalcos, therefore becoming an official member of DOMA. DOMA gave him a new life, a new family, and a purpose that he still believed to be for the greater good. He didn't want to betray DOMA and undo everything they had done, yet he didn't like the course of action Dartz had taken. Had the Pharaoh been in a physically able state, he wouldn't have minded whatever means Dartz used.
"No."
The room fell silent. While the other Swordsmen were still shocked by Rafael's response, Dartz had made his decision as well.
"I'm really disappointed in you, Rafael," Dartz began in an eerily calm tone. "Of all the members of DOMA, of all my trusted Swordsmen," he hissed. "I never thought that you would be the biggest disappointment!"
Everyone was silent. The words were spoken with such cold venom, it rendered everyone incapable of responding. Even Valon was tight-lipped.
"Since you refuse to stay out of the way, I'll share the Pharaoh's fate with you!"
Dartz's words were followed by both demons' roars, drowning out the protests of the other Swordsmen. Orichalcos Alpha then charged at both Rafael and the Pharaoh.
Instead of evading, what would be, the killing blow that's coming for them, Rafael stood his ground. Instinct made him place his burden on the floor, activate his duel-disk, draw five, and play the first card he drew.
A burst of warm light, followed by a pained roar.
The next thing he was aware of was the Orichalcos Alpha being forced back to the other side of the field by the winged maiden he had known for so long…
Guardian Eatos*…
The guardian stood before him, wings unfurled intimidatingly. "Activating spell card, Celestial Sword*!" Rafael added, slotting the card in place. In response, Eatos raised her hand above her head as the weapon materialized in her grasp, increasing her attack power to three thousand. Both monster and duelist shared a look. No words were needed. Rafael simply gave her a determined nod which she returned before charging at the still-downed Orichalcos Alpha. A thrust of her blade through the monster's chest was all it took. The monster disintegrated into black smoke.
Rafael sighed in relief; but that relief was short-lived…
The Orichalcos Soldier reeled back as its life-points was reduced to twenty-five hundred. Once it regained its stance, it roared viciously.
Rafael braced himself when a fist burst through the ground before him. A bright red demon, similar in appearance and power to the Orichalcos Alpha, emerged. Rafael had anticipated the five hundred increase in attack power due to the Seal, but was caught off-guard when it gained another power-up!
The red demon roared, its attack points now at twenty-five hundred!
"What?!" Rafael was stunned!
"Destroy the Orichalcos Alpha, and the Orichalcos Omega* takes its place," Dartz gloated. "….and its attack, multiplied by the number of times either monster are destroyed. It also works the other way around. There is no way for you to win!"
The Orichalcos Omega roared to support the threat.
Attacking it will just make things worse, Rafael noted as he drew a card, placed one face-down, and activated one of the cards in his hand—the spell card, Smashing Ground*.
A huge ball of white light generated above him. With a loud bursting sound much like an air-force jet breaking the sound barrier, it shot right at the Orichalcos Omega. The monster was disintegrated upon impact. Unfortunately, when the smoke cleared, its blue counterpart burst from the ground.
Attacks and spells don't work! Rafael growled as the Orichalcos Alpha, now with an attack of thirty-five hundred, aimed a punch at him. Guardian Eatos immediately stood before him, ready to counter the attack; but with only three thousand points at her disposal, she had no chance. So,
"Sakuretsu Armor*!" Rafael shouted as he activated his face-down trap card.
A smoky white aura emanated from his winged guardian. When the Orichalcos Alpha's fist was upon her, the white aura released a shock-wave, sending the monster flying before it was reduced to dust.
Rafael waited with bated breath, hoping that this time the monster's effect would not take place; but his hopes were dashed…
The familiar red fist punched through the ground. Before the Orichalcos Omega, now with an attack of forty-five hundred, could destroy them, "I activate the spell card, Gale Wings*!" Rafael declared, slotting the newly-drawn card in place.
A strong wind circled around Eatos as her wings began to glow. Her beautiful white wings were replaced by powerful looking wings with spotted grey feathers that took one thousand points from her defense, but increased her attack to forty-five hundred!
"That's not going to help you!" Dartz commented as the Orichalcos Omega charged at the powered-up Eatos.
Rafael ignored him. "I'm not done yet!"
At Rafael's words, Eatos raised her blade. Her body glowed a bright white as her effect was activated. At the cost of her Celestial Sword, she targeted the Orichalcos Alpha in the opponent's graveyard. Said beast was banished from the game, boosting Eatos' attack to five thousand and allowing her to eliminate the charging Orichalcos Omega.
The demon growled, its life-points down to two thousand.
But Rafael was still apprehensive…
It's out of the game. Rafael thought as Eatos' attack went down to forty-five hundred after her effect was used. It can't come back…
Unfortunately, the dreaded blue beast broke the earth and menacingly looming over them with an attack of fifty-five hundred!
"Shit!" Rafael hissed. He was out of ideas. There was nothing he could do but watch as the Orichalcos Alpha destroyed Guardian Eatos. He braced himself and the Pharaoh when Eatos' destruction sent a shock-wave right at them. A glance at his duel-disk showed his life-points reduced to three thousand. He growled and slammed a fist on the floor before getting back on his feet. His body trembled and his heart ached from Eatos' destruction, but he knew that her fall was never in vain. She would be avenged by the being he never thought would see the light of a duel…
The ground where the guardian fell darkened, black smoke emanating from, what appeared to be, a void. A skeletal hand shot out and grasped the edge, pulling up a frightening creature that froze the air and filled it with the stench of death.
"Guardian Dreadscythe*," Rafael murmured. Though he respected and cared for the monster, he still couldn't help but be intimidated by her image—especially now that she stood before him. Utilizing Dreadscythe's effect, Rafael took out and equipped her with her weapon—the Reaper Scythe*.
The dark guardian held her skeletal hands aloft. A dark and eerie glow appeared above her fingertips, the glow taking the shape of a frightening scythe.
With Guardian Eatos and Orichalcos Omega in both graveyards, the Reaper Scythe increased Guardian Dreadscythe's attack power to thirty-five hundred; but it was still not enough to surpass the Orichalcos Alpha's fifty-five hundred attack power.
Hence why the Alpha aimed a punch at the new monster.
Rafael used an arm to shield himself when the shock-wave of Dreadscythe's destruction slammed onto him, dragging his life-points down to one thousand. Having taken a stance in front of his charge, he believed none of the attack's impact got to the latter; but that still didn't stop him from checking on the king.
The Pharaoh was struggling to keep his consciousness, his body curled up and pressing against his bleeding side. Such a pitiful sight strengthened Rafael's resolve.
But what could he do?
"Your efforts are useless," Dartz's voice carried on nonchalantly. "No matter what you do, the servants of the Orichalcos will just come back stronger than before. In the end, the Pharaoh shall die. The only difference is whether or not you join him." He sighed. "I'm giving you one last chance. Stand down and leave the Pharaoh to his fate. You've seen what the Orichalcos can do. I'll give you five minutes to make the right decision!"
Gritting his teeth and clenching his fists, Rafael mustered the courage to look at his lord and fellows. Dartz was as stoic as ever. His comrades, on the other hand…
"He ain't worth it mate…" Valon whispered, but Rafael managed to hear him.
Rafael could tell that, not only Valon, but Amelda and even the doctor (whom he didn't know so well) didn't approve of his actions; but it seemed they knew him well enough to leave him to his devices. That didn't mean they weren't scared for him. The last thing Rafael wanted was to upset the people whom he saw as family.
His mind erupted into war. His beliefs against his family—which should he choose?
Unknown to him, his charge was well aware of his struggle.
"Rafael…"
The weak call finally grabbed the biker's attention. The Pharaoh was greatly relieved. He had been trying to get Rafael's attention for some time now. "Let….me fight," he implored. He managed to sit up, leaning heavily on the Seal's barrier.
"What can you do?" Rafael nearly scoffed. "No trap, spell, attack, or even monster effect can destroy the Orichalcos servants! You won't last two turns against them!"
"Same with you…"
Rafael turned away. He had no response to that.
"Thank you…"
Rafael returned his attention to the king. "I'm not doing this for you. I'm just doing what's right." He was visibly surprised upon seeing the king smile. Not a smirk, but a real smile. He hadn't seen the Nameless Pharaoh smile like that, even in all the pictures DOMA had obtained. It was heartwarming.
"You stayed true… to yourself. You remained a true duelist. I'm thankful for…that." The king swallowed heavily. "There's a way," he whispered as he shifted and, with great effort, reached for his pant pocket and pulled out his deck. "And it's in here."
"One minute!"
Rafael growled when Dartz's voice alerted him to what's coming. He caught the Pharaoh's determined gaze. Those pools of red-violet pulsed with confidence despite the odds. With a nod, Rafael made his choice.
"I'll stand down!"
Those words did to the tension what a needle would to an overinflated balloon. The other Swordsmen, including Dartz, showed visible signs of relief.
"…If you let the Pharaoh fight with his own cards!"
An exasperated sigh…
"He's injured! How's he supposed to duel?!"
Rafael answered the query by going down on a knee beside the king. He pulled his duel-disk free from his wrist and held it out, still activated, in front of the Pharaoh after removing his cards. "His right hand's fine, so I'll be his left," he explained, not caring how ridiculous he must look.
A roll of heterochromatic eyes. Dartz sighed. He did say that the Seal of Orichalcos gave everyone a chance to fight. "Very well," he sneered. It won't change the course of Fate.
Rafael ignored the venomous tone of the words. He turned to the Pharaoh and, as he took the proffered deck, "I hope you know what you're doing," he said.
The Pharaoh nodded.
Rafael gave a small nod in return before putting the king's deck in its designated place. The ping on the life-point indicator displayed a total of one thousand life-points—his remaining points.
Dartz huffed impatiently when Rafael held the Pharaoh's hand cards for him while the king's draw phase commenced. "So the Nameless Pharaoh shall fight…" A laugh. "I suppose that's a more noble way to die. I'll even give him the chance to summon a monster before my servant finishes him off!" he added condescendingly, his eyes focused on Rafael's gaze. "I hope that's good enough to represent our cause, Rafael!"
The jeer was ignored by those within the Seal. At least Dartz gave way, but the Orichalcos Alpha was as strong as ever. With fifty-five hundred attack points, Rafael wondered how the Pharaoh was going to defeat such a powerful beast.
The Pharaoh, on the other-hand, didn't dwell on that thought. The moment his hand touched his cards, he felt the familiar spark only a strong bond could evoke. He knew now that all hope wasn't lost. Despite his body's protests, he started his turn by activating the spell card,
"Pot of Greed*."
The Pharaoh drew two cards and placed it with the cards Rafael held. The blonde never took the time nor chance to look at the cards he was made to hold, earning him the Pharaoh's respect. A slight smile graced the king's lips upon seeing the two drawn cards.
"Special summon Watapon*," the Pharaoh stated, summoning the pink cotton-ball monster due to its effect—which was activated when Pot of Greed placed it in hand. However, the cotton-ball disappeared as soon as it appeared when the Pharaoh used it as a sacrifice to summon,
"Dark Magician Girl*!"
The Dark Magician Girl gracefully made her entrance and stood protectively before the Pharaoh. The monster took a moment to look back at her king, her eyes conveying so much loyalty and concern that made Rafael's heart ache. It reminded the biker of the guardian who always stood by him.
"Be strong, master. We are here for you."
The Pharaoh nodded, her soft voice giving him strength. I promise. I won't fail you, he whispered in his heart. The spellcaster smiled, but a vicious roar ripped her attention from him.
The Orichalcos Alpha was launching an attack!
With her eyes on the opponent, staff in place, and stance ready, the Dark Magician Girl was ready for battle. Despite her determination, fear still gripped her. Rafael couldn't blame her. They both knew that she had no chance against the charging beast.
But only one of them had complete faith in the Pharaoh.
"Timaeus*!" the Pharaoh said aloud as he played the now-glowing card from his hand. "Lend us your power!"
A burst of light shot from the card to the field. The Orichalcos Alpha was thrown back by the force, but not destroyed. It, along with the Orichalcos Soldier, roared aggressively when their sworn enemy appeared in full draconic regalia.
"Timaeus!" Dartz growled. Damn him!
The majestic dragon stood protectively before the Pharaoh, snarling mercilessly at the enemy.
So, you've regained the Legendary Dragon's trust, Rafael mused, giving the Pharaoh a quick glance after gazing in awe at the powerful dragon. The king looked ready to pass out, but he was literally using every ounce of strength he had left to keep going.
"Dark Magician Girl," the Pharaoh commanded. "Combine with Timaeus!"
Both monsters glowed and became undone, their forms melding onto one another to form,
"Dark Magician Girl the Dragon Knight*!"
Dark Magician Girl had traded her pink and purple magician's garb for a steely grey warrior's armor and her mystical staff for a sharp sword. She sat on the back of a roaring Timaeus!
"You may have the Legendary Dragon on your side," Dartz began with a smirk. "But its attack power is inadequate against the Orichalcos Alpha!"
Dartz's words pointed out the truth. The new monster's attack was only twenty-six hundred. It was nothing compared to the Orichalcos Alpha's fifty-five hundred!
"I also activate the spell card, Horn of Light*!" the Pharaoh added. A spot in the center of the dragon's forehead began to glow. A magnificent horn emerged, increasing the monster's defense from seventeen hundred to twenty-five hundred.
"Useless move!" Dartz shouted.
Rafael couldn't help agreeing. Dark Magician Girl the Dragon Knight was in attack mode. What's the point of increasing their defense? When the Orichalcos Alpha charged at the dragon knight, Rafael was already expecting the worst.
But, once again, the Pharaoh had something up his sleeve.
"Activating Shield and Sword*!" the Pharaoh announced.
Though the opposing monsters gained attack points with each rebirth, their defenses always remained at one hundred. With the spell card, Shield and Sword, the attack and defense points of all monsters on the field were interchanged.
With its defense upped by the Horn of Light, the dragon knight's defense-now-turned-attack was at twenty-five hundred, a hundred points lower than their original attack; but the loss was worth it, for the Orichalcos Alpha's attack was brought down to one hundred!
Rafael was very impressed!
As the Alpha aimed a punch at the dragon knight, the latter had charged up and released their combined attack. The Orichalcos Alpha was destroyed together with the Orichalcos Soldier as the damage reduced the latter's life-points to zero.
Looking where the opponent once was, Rafael couldn't help but be amazed. The Nameless Pharaoh's dueling skills were truly extraordinary! In even the most hopeless situations, he could find a way to pull through. Turning back to his charge, admiration quickly turned to worry.
The Pharaoh had lost consciousness.
"Master!"
The Dark Magician Girl, still wearing a warrior's garb, dropped to her knees beside the king. She gently took hold of the Pharaoh's form, letting his head rest on her shoulder. Worry was heavily etched on her features. Though the duel was won, their problem was far from over.
The Seal of Orichalcos was still in place.
A frown creased Rafael's brow as the mystical power still kept them captive. He was about to address Dartz when a deep and echoing growl rumbled within the Seal. Like the Dark Magician Girl currently embracing the Pharaoh, the Legendary Dragon hadn't left the field. It still stood where it was summoned. Though Rafael found it hard to believe, there was no mistaking the boiling hatred and anger in the dragon's eyes, its hostile gaze aimed at,
Rafael's eyes widened.
Dartz met the dragon's gaze head-on. Though the former appeared calm and apathetic, his eyes conveyed ice-cold anger that frightened anyone subjected to it; anyone but a powerful dragon, it seemed.
The room was silent as the Legendary Dragon and the CEO of Paradius Inc. continued to glare at one another. After what felt like hours, Dartz closed his eyes. He still managed to smirk even though the dragon looked ready to swallow him whole, held back only by the Seal's barrier. He opened his eyes.
"Hello, little brother."

AN (07/25/14): I am truly sorry for the tardy update. I never expected I would end up being one of those authors who make their beloved readers wait for months! *bows* I'm really REALLY sorry. I hope this makes up for it.
So, did anyone expect the last part? It's quite the twist, no? How about the duel, was it alright? It made this chapter all the more difficult to write. I know the basics (but I'm rusty) and I did use some actual cards together with some of my own creations (feel free to use them in whatever way you see fit. Just give me credit). Also, I didn't want to break the descriptive pattern with a script-format duel, i.e.
Orichalcos LP: 4000 vs Rafael LP: 4000
Turn 1: Orichalcos
Draw Phase
Main Phase 1: summon Orichalcos Omega, etc…
I hope the duel was still easy to understand. Let me know your thoughts! Anyway, the next is (probably) the final chappie. I'll try to put it up sooner.
I'd like to thank you all and I apologize if I didn't reply to your reviews. Work consumes most of my time and my lousy internet connection makes it more difficult to do so (I only get 60 hours a month. Most of the time, the speed doesn't go past 1mbps! X_X); but you guys inspire me to keep going despite the odds.
P.S., My three OC cards are based on one franchise. Can anybody guess? Here's a hint, two of the cards are based on a coming remake. : )
EDIT: I apologize if the above AN (which I just amended) insinuated a review ransom for this fic's continuation. Such a thing is not, and will never be, my intention. Though I may take some of my work down, it's not because I am dissatisfied with the review count. I state my reasons and give my readers an early warning to prepare for a possible discontinuation of a fic, but that's usually when the fic has barely started.
You have nothing to fear. I will finish this story, as it's inches from completion. If otherwise, it's probably due to serious emergencies. I do not want to disappoint those who have been following this fic for this long. Plus, I have worked far too hard on this to simply take it down. I don't want my efforts to go to waste.
