I do not own Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, but this story is of my own creation, please do not copy or replicate this piece of work.
The boy laughed and held out his hand, "Welcome to the home of the Forest People, my name is Selm, nice to make your acquaintance."
Nazo blinked once before holding out his hand and shaking it, "Umm, nice to meet you too, the name is Nazo."
Selm smiled, "I know, Nausicaä told me all about you and your quest." Nazo turned to look at Nausicaä who was smiling.
She said, "Once they heard that we were trying to find out and put a stop to the insect's rage, they agreed to help us."
Nazo nodded his head in understanding. "That is great, but before that, could you bring me up to speed on what happened after I was..." Nazo cringed at this, "thrown to the ground?"
Nausicaä nodded slowly. "After I recovered from that insect barreling past me, I flew down to find a pack of Ohmu treating you; they were using their feelers to heal your injuries. After they finished they just left. Soon after Selm and others came to help us, after explaining our situation, they agreed to help us and carried you back to their home, while I retrieved your glider. You were out for at least eleven hours, it already the next day."
Nazo turned to Selm, "How did you know where to find us?"
Selm responded, "I was called by the Ohmu."
Nazo raised an eyebrow, "Called by the Ohmu?"
Selm nodded, "We, the forest people, have learned to communicate with the insects of the jungle. By learning how to talk to the insects, we have obtained a peaceful co-existence with them. So when you fell, the Ohmu called out to me asking for my people's assistance."
Nausicaä smiled, "It is lucky for us that you came to help, if you didn't, we would have been lost for sure."
Nazo nodded, "She's right, we would have been too turned around after that attack. Speaking of which… what happened to the horde that was chasing us?"
Selm cut in, "That was also the Ohmu's doing. They told the other insects, 'the child of ruination bears no fault, so he shall not be purged unrightfully.' So the insects left without argument."
Nazo frowned, "Child of ruination? What kind of name is that?"
Selm smiled meekly, "That is the name you have been given o time traveler, you are from the time that destroyed and polluted this earth to cause it to be such a barren wasteland, and the insects have placed their malice on you."
Nazo grimaced, "Impossible, how would the insects know that I came from the past?
Selm held up a hand to silence him, "The insects have a hive mind, where they are attuned to all other insects, the links between similar species is stronger than those of different type, but, if one insect knows something, they all will know, sooner or later.
Nazo paled, "Great… Anyway, let's cut to the chase, do you know what is causing the insects to act violently? "
Selm smiled, "To business then, yes, we know the exact cause of the rage. It is a machine that is pumping out a harmful element, which is dangerous to insects."
Nazo narrowed his eyes, "Where is this machine?"
Selm shrugged his shoulders, "Couldn't tell you, but I know that you know where it is."
Nazo raised an eyebrow until realization dawned upon him, "my capsule…"
Selm nodded, "Precisely, whatever element is produced in that capsule is driving the bugs wild, if you destroy that capsule, it will solve the crisis on your hands."
Nazo turned to Nausicaä, "Nausicaä, do you remember where you picked me up the day we first met?"
Nausicaä nodded. Nazo smiled, "Well at least we know where to find it… but how are we going to get past the insects?"
Selm smiled, "The insects should not be a problem for now, my friend. The Ohmu have calmed their rage, for now, though it will not last for long, I suggest you hurry on your way."
Nazo nodded and stood up. "Nausicaä, let's move out."
Nausicaä nodded and stood up as well. She thanked Selm for his help and turned to find Nazo tugging at his clothes.
"What's wrong Nazo?"
Nazo looked up. "There are holes in my clothes, like when that bug bit into my back, is there anything I can use? If spores get on my back, I am essentially finished…"
Selm nodded, "Hold on, I think we have something around here..." He stood up and opened a cabinet. He brought out a brown cloak similar to Lord Yupa's
"Wear this to prevent spores from touching your body."
Nazo smiled, "Thank you." He then threw the cloak over himself and then walked out.
Nazo stood and looked around in wonder of the village. They were inside what seemed to be a bubble. Nazo could not tell what the bubble was made of, but it somehow protected them from the spores around. People were walking around in multiple bubbles strung together by multiple passages. Nazo would have been willing to believe it was actually a highly advanced city if not for the fact that the houses themselves were so shabby looking. The houses themselves looked like sticks piled together with some sort of glue-like material holding them together.
"What is this stuff?" asked Nazo as he experimentally poked that the bubble.
Selm came out and laughed, "Ohmu fluid."
Nazo flinched and took a step back, "Ohmu fluid? What does it do?"
Selm started walking prompting Nausicaä and Nazo to follow, "this Ohmu fluid purifies the air around us, believe it or not, if you slathered some on your mouth, you could breathe no problem."
Nazo raised an eyebrow, "I think I will pass on that."
Nausicaä laughed nervously, "I think I will as well…"
Selm shrugged, "Suit yourself."
They walked until they came to the bubble that held their gliders.
"Well here we are you two," Selm said as he stopped.
Nazo nodded in thanks while Nausicaä bowed in gratitude.
"Don't worry about the insects," said Nazo as he set up Gale, "Everything will be taken care of today or the next."
Selm smiled, "Glad to hear it, I pray for your safe travels."
Nazo nodded, then turned to Nausicaä, "Ready to go?"
Nausicaä nodded back, "Yep!"
The two strapped on their goggles and gas masks, and took off into the sky, both waving goodbye. The two flew up, breaking through the trees until they reached a good altitude.
"What way now?" asked Nazo as he glided next to Nausicaä.
Nausicaä pointed, "This way, if we hurry, we can get there in the afternoon."
Nazo nodded, "Alright, let's go." The two accelerated and flew northward.
After an hour or so Nausicaä called out, "So you have a plan on destroying your capsule?"
Nazo pointed to the small spherical bombs attached to his waste, "Our best bet would be to just obliterate the thing in an explosion. We can use these grenades and the gun grenades as well. There is only one problem…"
Nausicaä frowned, though it was not visible because of her mask, "What's the problem?"
Nazo shrugged, "nothing too big, just there is probably an entire building on top of it. Seriously… how that capsule was NOT destroyed is a mystery. All I can think of is shifting the debris that is small enough by hand, and moving the larger rocks with our gliders until we reach the capsule, of course if some of the rubble is too big we can always blow it apart with an explosion."
Nausicaä nodded, "What is in the capsule anyway?"
Nazo sighed, "Probably xenoclumifuho, it is a highly stable gaseous compound that can, with the right doses, can make a person go into a comatose state. It essentially freezes a person's bodily functions, until they need to be released. Since this compound only affected humans at a certain dosage, after the set amount of years, the cryogenic chamber would open automatically, and the xenoclumifuho would be released, with the dosage not at the right amount, the person's body would start functioning again. The chamber would then shut down the pump releasing the compound, making it a cost effective system. Xenoclumifuho is also proven to have no ill side effect on humans, and is 100% environmentally friendly." Nazo thought for a bit, "well environmentally friendly at the time anyway…"
Nausicaä giggled a bit at Nazo's comment before asking, "So I guess the capsule is leaking because of the insect attacking it?"
Nazo nodded, "Probably or the building falling on it, either way we need to hurry and put an end to it."
Nausicaä nodded firmly and the both faced forward once again.
The two touched down where the now ruined building lay.
Nazo raised his eyebrows, "Well this is certainly a surprise…"
What lay before him was not the entirety of a ruined building. It seems the insects had taken action. Most of the debris was gone or had been dragged away. A few dead insect corpses lay around.
Nausicaä waved Nazo over to the rubble and they started digging. After an hour of shifting, pulling, and a few explosions, they finally found the capsule.
"You came out of this thing?" asked Nausicaä as she poked at it.
Nazo scowled, "It was in much better condition when I first woke up, now come on, we have a job to do."
Nazo unstrapped all his grenades and threw them in the bed of the pod. Nausicaä loaded an exploding round into her gun.
"Nazo, could you pick up some of those glass pieces? We can use them for the Valley."
Nazo nodded, "Ah, good call Nausicaä, will do."
Nazo gathered a fair amount of polypropylene shards and placed them in his side pouch. He then ran towards Gale and lifted off, making sure to be clear of the impending explosion, "Ready when you are Nausicaä!"
Nausicaä nodded and flew up and well. She flew up until she was a good distance away. She then took out her rifle and flew over the capsule bed, taking a shot as she passed over head. The resulting explosion was quite large. The shockwave alone rocked both gliders and the sound was deafening. The fires and the debris fortunately could not reach them. Both Nausicaä and Nazo dived down and took a look at the now charred remains of the capsule.
"We did it Nausicaä, nothing is going to work after that," said Nazo as he inspected it.
Nausicaä smiled, "Thank goodness, now the insects will no longer suffer."
Nazo nodded, "Then let's go back home, personally, I am worn out."
Nausicaä laughed, "So am I, let's head back."
The two walked towards their gliders, tired but satisfied.
A sudden screech caused the both of them to flinch in alarm. The both looked towards the sound and saw a giant dragonfly insect burst out of the trees and start hovering dangerously over them.
Nazo drew Shattered Dream, while Nausicaä took out her insect charm. Another sound was heard, this time from the forest in front of them, an ant looking monster seemed to be staring at them, with the intent of killing them, its red eyes glistened dangerously.
Nazo grit his teeth, "I thought that the Ohmu had told all the insects that I am innocent…"
Nausicaä looked worried, "Who knows? The message might not have spread this far yet."
Nazo scowled, "Great… so what do we do now?"
Nausicaä took a step forward, "Let me try my insect charm first, it may subdue their rage."
Nausicaä began to spin the charm in her hands and a low humming was heard. The sound was a calming one, even to Nazo.
Nausicaä called out in a caring voice, "Both of you… please calm down, we have solved the problem that was causing you pain, it is ok now. You no longer have to worry about being in pain, please return to your home."
The insects' eyes started to fluctuate between red and blue. Soon the blue became more prevalent until it became a solid blue. The insects hummed softly and seemed to relax quite a bit.
Nazo let out a sigh of relief; it seemed that everything was under control. Nazo cast a glance at Nausicaä. He wished he could use the same methods as she did to pacify the insects. Unfortunately, he was nowhere near as caring or understanding as she, so the prospect seemed low. With the most recent evidence, this was even less likely.
"Child of ruination huh?" thought Nazo ruefully. He would never be able to connect to the insects like Nausicaä did, well maybe the Ohmu. According to Nausicaä, the Ohmu were the most caring and considerate insects of the entire poison forest.
Nazo looked up to see the two insects slowly retreat back into the forest. He walked over to Nausicaä and joined her as she watched the insects leave, "I have to hand it to you Nausicaä, the peaceful way really is the best."
Nausicaä smiled and gave him a wink, "of course! Admit it! You want to adopt my theory of pacifism now, huh?"
Nazo laughed, "Adopt? Not really, but I do understand it much more after seeing something like this."
A shifting of leaves was heard in the forest again.
Nazo sighed, "Seriously? We just got done with this…"
Fortunately for them, a baby Ohmu appeared.
Nazo furrowed his brow, "A baby?"
Nausicaä however was much more enthusiastic, "Ah! You're the one from that time! How are you?"
She ran over to the Ohmu and started to pat its shell. In response, the Ohmu's golden feelers came on and gently laid itself in Nausicaä's palm.
Nazo, sensing that there would be no problems, sheathed his sword.
"Wonder what it wants," said Nazo as he walked up. The baby Ohmu noticed him and took one its feelers away from Nausicaä to pull on Nazo's clothing.
Nausicaä observed the situation, "I think the Ohmu wants us to go in further.
Nazo raised an eyebrow but nodded and followed the baby Ohmu and Nausicaä deeper into the forest. The group walked for three minutes until the baby stopped in a clearing. Moments later three large Ohmu came forward. The golden tendrils came out one by one, surrounding the pair. Nazo glanced at Nausicaä and saw her close her eyes, willingly allowing the Ohmu to communicate with her. Nazo did the same. He felt one tendril touch his forehead, and two more touch him temples. Then when he opened his eyes, he was no longer in the forest of death; instead he stood in a throne room. A quick glance downward informed him that his normal attire was gone; instead he wore his clothes from back in his time. He looked up again and saw a man wearing a crown, smirking obsessively, immediately body was jolted with pain. This continued for the entire time. The pain, while uncomfortable, was not harsh enough to not allow rational thought.
"Am I supposed to associate this man with pain?"
Suddenly, the door to the room was kicked in and in ran a copy of Nazo. The copy drew his blade against the man and ran towards him, ready to strike. The pain now was gone.
"Do they want me to defeat this guy?"
The scene before him started to warp and fade, prompting Nazo to close his eyes. When he opened them once more, he was back in the present, with the golden tendrils slowly retreating back to the Ohmu.
Nausicaä had her eyes open as well. She bowed, "Thank you Ohmu." With that, all the Ohmu slowly turned around and crawled away.
Nazo swallowed, "What do you think that was about?"
Nausicaä shook her head, "I don't know, but we should talk about it with Mito and Obaba."
Nazo nodded and the two headed out of the forest.
As the two touched down in the Valley of the Wind, the townspeople rushed up to greet them. Nausicaä declared that the problem had been fixed, which made the townspeople rejoice. They would have questioned her further, but they noted how tired she looked. After bidding her farewell, and getting her to promise to tell them the story tomorrow, the people went back to working.
Nausicaä and Nazo walked tiredly towards the castle. A few feet away Mito burst out and helped them inside, while instructing someone to take care of their gliders. The two nodded in appreciation and walked inside the castle. A familiar "yip!" was heard and a happy Teto bounded towards the duo. It first went to its original master and gave her a very affectionate nuzzle before jumping from one shoulder to another and nuzzling Nazo on the cheek.
Nazo smiled wearily and said, "It is good to see you as well Teto," while reaching up and petting the fox-squirrel.
Nausicaä smiled at the scene for a moment before her face became serious, "Nazo… let's talk with Mito and Obaba."
Nazo nodded, "right."
A few minutes later, the duo was explaining what had happened on their adventure with Mito and Obaba listening intently.
When Nazo's unofficial title was mentioned, Mito and Obaba turned to look worriedly at Nazo, but did not say anything.
Nausicaä started to wrap up the story, "After we had calmed the insects down, we were lead into the forest by a baby Ohmu, and then we were given a vision."
Obaba started at this, "A vision you say? Tell me child, what sort of vision did you have?"
Nausicaä took a deep breath, "I was looking upon a battlefield, I saw myself, Asbel, Lord Yupa, and others fighting against armed soldiers. We were right in front of a large stone castle. But the strange thing is that insects were on our side. They would swoop down and destroy our opponents. It was something I never saw before."
Nazo raised his eyebrows, "What I saw was a throne room, with someone inside. From the looks of it, the man wore a crown, so he could be a king or something. The entire time I observed the man, I felt pain. Finally a version of me burst through the door and confronted him, making the pain stop.
Obaba and Mito mulled this over. Finally Obaba said, "Ohmu are wise and wonderful creatures, who understand the land much better than any other lifeform. If they have come to you for something, there must be a reason. These tasks have been bestowed upon you two. It seems that this is a sign for you two that will happen in the future. Keep this in mind."
Nazo and Nausicaä nodded then agreed to take a rest. They were both exhausted. After waving goodbye to Nausicaä, Nazo wearily changed clothes and collapsed on his bed. As his eyes closed, his mind shuffled through what he had seen today, he could only wonder what was in store for him.
Whoo! Chapter 10 done! Sorry for the super long wait, true is it better than waiting 2 years like some writers, but that still is not really a legitimate excuse.
As you can probably guess Xenoclumifuho is not real. It is a made up compound that is for the use of this Fanfiction only.
Even though this is being released around Christmas/ the holidays, I am still going to attempt to do a holiday omake, I already have some things planned, so look forward to it…. Hopefully.
Thanks to Casel002, Galatic, and Manga154 for reviewing!
