10) Naomi blames many things, but not fate.
Naomi cursed herself for the umpteenth time for cutting contact with some of her oldest friends. I want to be with my fiancé, she mocked in her head. So, she didn't work for them anymore. They had been like her family, the least she could have done was keep in contact! Near had looked heartbroken, in a blank sort of way.
L had changed his number since the last time she'd talked to him. Naturally. When didn't he? Unfortunately, she had also gotten a new phone since then, and the only other number she had memorized had been Beyond's. Who was dead.
This time, she cursed Kira.
Kira, and her own stupidity. The two factors that lead her to be standing, here, before the desk in police headquarters, begging for an audience with L. Ha! She had to ask an audience with the little boy she'd taught to fight.
Then in walked Light Yagami, who was looking for his father, who knew about the task force, who offered to help her. He seemed alright at first, but began acting more and more strangely as their conversation went on. He practically radiated innocence and purity and it made her want to trust him, instinctively, but she'd known Beyond. He had been one of the best actors in the world, even when his mind was going.
And he was dead. Just like Raye. Just like her, she realized, and the knowledge was too little too late as Yagami looked down at his watch again, smirking a little smirk like L when he was being vicious. She'd said he reminded her of someone, but she wasn't sure whether she'd meant L or B.
"Why do you keep looking at your watch?" She asked. Just to be sure. Just so that she'd know, before she died.
"Oh… well… I guess it's because…" And now his smirk didn't remind her of L, but of Beyond when he'd gone mad. "I'm Kira."
She couldn't suppress the sharp intake of breath as he looked at his watch on final tiem, an then she was turning, walking away. She heard him call mockingly after her and heard her voice responding. He was testing it, she realized. What a bastard!
As she found herself committing an entirely uncharacteristic suicide, she apologised mentally to her parents, to Raye, to her pseudo family. Her last thought were muted anger at her on damn human stupidity and an almost-defiant Damn you Kira! You utter bastard!
And that was all she wrote. Maybe someday I'll be inspired to write in this fandom again, but I doubt it. Sayonara, all.
