Santana's eyes shoot open in surprise when she hears the beginning of her phone's ringtone begin to play. She doesn't know whether it's morning or night as the dark winter mornings make it impossible to tell and the only source of light that there is, is coming from her phone which is lying on her bedside table. Rapidly blinking her eyes in order to get rid of the sleep from them, she leans over to grab her phone so that she can give a verbal beat down to whoever is calling her. She's never been a morning person, and she hates getting up before nine o'clock, everyone knows that about her.
"Santana you better pick up that fucking phone before I smash it!" Jessica shouts as she sits up in bed, clearly pissed off at being woken up so early. Santana thinks it must be quite early in the morning if Jessica is still here since she leaves for work everyday at seven. Rolling her eyes at her girlfriend (even though it's too dark for Jessica to notice), Santana reaches over and grabs her phone. However, as soon as she sees who is calling her, all of the anger that she was feeling completely disappears.
Brittany's calling her.
Jumping out of bed and ignoring how cold it is, Santana presses the accept button before pressing the phone to her ear. She doesn't want Jessica to hear their conversation so she exits the bedroom before speaking. "Hey Britt, what's up?" She breathes out, too tired to notice that she's used her ex-girlfriend's nickname.
"S-Santana, I-I need your help!" Brittany gasps and suddenly the brunette feels more awake and alert than ever. She can hear the pain in Brittany's voice and she feels like she's going to throw up because of it. Something is definitely wrong. "I-I'm in s-so much pain. I-I don't know what's going on, but I-I need you to come over a-and look after C-Cassidy so that I-I can go to the hospital. S-Sugar's not here. S-She left to go to h-her parent's house a w-week ago."
Santana opens her mouth to say something, but nothing comes out. She feels her stomach churn and before she even knows what's happening, she barges back through into her bedroom, ignoring Jessica yelling at her for being so disruptive, and grabs a pair of jeans and hoodie so that she can get changed. "Brittany don't worry." She soothes through the phone when she hears the blonde gasp in pain. "I'll be there in ten minutes, just keep calm."
"I'm trying but it h-hurts so b-bad." She hears Brittany whimper and she's pretty sure that her heart just broke at the sound. She hates it when Brittany's in pain because there's nothing that she can do to help. "P-Please just hurry up."
"I'm just about to leave Britt." She answers as she wedges the phone between her ear and shoulder so that she can slip on her jeans over her boxers. "I promise, I'll be there soon." She adds as she zips up her hoodie and grabs the car keys from the bedside table. She knows that Jessica will probably kill her since she always takes their car to work, but this is an emergency so she's just going to have to deal with it.
Santana doesn't even bother to say goodbye to Jessica as she leaves the house because she's too busy trying to calm Brittany down on the phone. Although, she's pretty sure that Jessica fell back asleep so it's not like she would have listened anyway. Once she's in the car, she puts her phone on speaker and sits it on the seat beside her so that she can still talk to Brittany. She knows that it's dangerous and she's probably breaking some kind of law, but she can't help it. She needs to stay on the phone to Brittany. She needs to know she's okay. Besides, it's like four o'clock in the morning so she doubts she's going to get caught.
The drive seems to take an eternity but in reality, it only takes Santana eight minutes to get there and she would have made it there quicker if it hadn't been for the fact that she had to drive so carefully because of how dark it was. As soon as her car is parked, she grabs her phone from the seat beside her and ends the call with Brittany before jumping out of her car and locking it. As she jogs up towards the house, being careful not to slip on the ice, she can feel her heart pound in her chest. She's tired and has no idea what's going on. All she does know is that Brittany needs her. Just like the blonde had promised during their phone call, the front door to the house is already unlocked so Santana lets herself in and rushes through to the front room where she finds Brittany curled up on the couch. She immediately makes her way over to her and kneels down beside her, gently bringing
her hand up to cup Brittany's cheek.
"Britt, what's wrong?" Santana questions as her eyebrows scrunch together in confusion and worry. If she's honest, Brittany looks like shit. She is paler than usual and she has big black bags under her eyes and the Latina wonders how long Brittany has actually been in pain for. Santana knows that for the past week Brittany has been feeling unwell as she's been spending all of her free time with her and Cassidy, but she assumed that it was just a winter illness which would eventually go away.
"What has happened?"
"I don't know." Brittany answers, wincing in pain as she sits up on the couch so that there is a space for Santana to sit. "I-I woke up with a r-really bad pain in my side. I-It hasn't gone away, it's j-just become worse."
"Right." Santana says, nodding her head as she processes the information. "Have you taken any pain medication?"
"Yes, but it's not working." Santana hears the way that her ex girlfriend's breath catches in her throat, showing the obvious pain that she's in and she wishes that she could just make everything better. She doesn't know what to do and that frustrates her because this is something that she can't fix.
Without saying anything, Santana stands up from her seat and exits the front room before running up the stairs, taking two at a time. When she makes it to Cassidy's room, she's not surprised to find her daughter fast asleep. Thankfully, the room is illuminated by a night light and so Santana tiptoes across it and comes to stop beside her bed. She needs to get Cassidy into her car without waking her up and she doesn't really know how this is going to work out.
Pulling the comforter back, Santana can't help but smile when she notices that Cassidy is dressed in an adorable penguin onesie. She'd probably take a picture if it weren't for the fact that Brittany was sitting downstairs in pain. Once she makes sure that she's got everything (including Cheeky the
Monkey because she's pretty sure there will be more drama if she forgets him), Santana exits the room with Cassidy in her arms.
"Britt can you walk to the car? We're going to the hospital." Santana announces as she pops her head into the front room, finding Brittany in the exact same position that she left her in. "Don't try and argue with me, you need to go to the hospital and you can't drive yourself there." She adds quickly, knowing that if she doesn't then Brittany is going to try and talk her way out of letting Santana take her.
Brittany slowly stands up, her face contorting in pain as she does so, but she breathes through it and shuffles towards the door, picking up her purse and keys as she does so. Once the three of them are outside Santana makes her way straight towards the car to strap Cassidy into her car seat, and Brittany stays behind to lock the front door. As she locks it, a shiver racks through her body as the cold air nips her skin but she tries not to focus on that and instead wraps her arms around her body to protect herself.
"Thanks for doing this." Brittany breaks the silence as she slides into the car, thankful that Santana already has it up and running with the heating on. "I didn't know who else to call, Sugar is out of town and I panicked an-"
"Hey, Britt, it's okay." Santana soothes as she pulls out onto the road and begins to drive. "I'm here and we're going to get this sorted out, okay? Don't worry about it, everything is going to be fine."
Santana can't guarantee that everything is going to be fine, so she's praying that it will all run smoothly. She doesn't know what's going on and she hates not being in control of the situation, but she knows that she needs to remain calm for Brittany and Cassidy. They need her right now. The rest of the journey is spent in complete silence, but it's exactly what the two women need. Brittany spends her time focussing on breathing in and out, and Santana focusses on the road ahead, thankful of the distraction.
When they reach the hospital, Santana pulls into the first parking space that she sees and jumps out of the car. She opens the passenger door for Brittany and then opens the back door so that she can lift Cassidy out of her seat. She's still sleeping so she skilfully picks her up, making sure not to wake her, and secures the toddler to her hip. She even smiles slightly when she feels Cassidy bury her face into her neck.
Without thinking about it, Santana wraps one of her arms around Brittany's waist and pulls her into her body in an attempt to protect her and keep her warm. She finds it a little bit strange that as soon as Brittany is close to her, both of them seem to relax a little bit, but she pushes that thought to the back of her mind. Right now is not the time to be thinking about how her ex girlfriend still has some kind of magic effect on her.
Brittany is currently lying in a hospital bed with Santana perched beside her, holding tightly onto her hand. She hasn't let go since they got her. They've been at the hospital for just over an hour now, but not a lot of progress has been made. The nurses took her down for an emergency ultrasound (both Santana and Brittany are still confused as to why, but neither of them have had the chance to question it) and they've now got Brittany hooked up to a machine that's giving her pain medicine. As the blonde isn't in as much pain as she was before, both women are a lot more relaxed and the fact that Cassidy is still sleeping soundly in the chair next to them is a blessing as it means there is one less thing to worry about right now.
"Thanks for being here." Brittany speaks up, breaking the comfortable silence that surrounds them. She really is glad that Santana's here because out of the two of them, she's always the one that knows what to do in situations like this. For example, when they first entered the hospital, Santana was the one that got Brittany her own room and when the nurses were giving her pain relief, it was Santana that took a note on what they were giving her. She doesn't really know what she would have done without the Latina.
"It's okay." Santana shrugs, acting as if it's no big deal. She's glad that Brittany did call her instead of one of her other friends because if she had found out about this from someone else at a later stage, she probably would have had a heart attack. Sure, she's still hurt by everything that Brittany has done but she still cares about the woman. She was her first love after all, and they've grown closer due to the past week they've spent together.
"I'm really glad you're here." The blonde admits bashfully as she glances down at their clasped hands, squeezing them slightly. She's unsure to what is actually going on between her and Santana right now, but she doesn't want to question it in case it changes the dynamics between them. She needs the brunette right now, she doesn't want to make anything awkward between them.
"Well, since we're being honest with one another, I'm really glad you called me." Santana replies with a small smile as she keeps her gaze concentrated on their hands because she doesn't think that she can look into Brittany's eyes right now without blushing or doing something embarrassing. She feels as if she has no control over her body right now, but she blames it on the lack of sleep she's had. "I know that everything isn't great between us right now, but I still care about you Britt."
Out of the corner of her eye, Santana watches as the blonde's cheeks visibly grow warmer and she can't help but chuckle quietly. Brittany on the other hand doesn't find it so funny and ducks her head, resting it on Santana's shoulders and moves her body so that she's closer to the other woman. Un-phased by the change in position, the Latina wraps her arm around Brittany to comfort her.
"If it weren't for the fact that you were lying in hospital with drugs being pumped into your system, I'd think you were trying to flirt with me." Santana teases playfully as she tightens her hold on Brittany to show that she's joking. When she doesn't get a response from Brittany straight away, she thinks that maybe she's gone a step too far but she lets out a sigh of relief when she feels Brittany laugh against her.
"You're always so full of yourself." Brittany comments, lifting her head momentarily off Santana's shoulder so that she can roll her bright blue eyes at her. "Clearly the lack of sleep has gotten to your head."
Santana can't help but snort at the response because she's missed talking to her ex girlfriend like this. She's missed the jokes and friendly banter that they once shared, and she wishes that she could have it all back in an instant. However she knows that it doesn't work like that. She's aware that the relationship between them both needs repaired, but she's willing to work on that. She wants them to at least be friends again.
"Well I don't usually appreciate being woken up at five o'clock in the morning." The Latina replies. "I'll let it slide this time, but only because it's you."
"I'm sorry for waking you up so early in the morning, if you want to go to sleep then I understand." Brittany apologises, feeling extremely guilty for waking Santana up at that time in the morning. She was trying to hold off from calling her until around eight in the morning, but the pain became unbearable and there was nothing else that she could do.
"I'm not going anywhere." Santana states, running her thumb across the back of the pale hand in hers. "If you're going to be awake then I'm staying awake with you, I can sleep later." She keeps her voice firm and Brittany knows not to argue with her. If the blonde is being honest, she's actually quite glad that Santana has decided to stay awake with her but she does feel a little bit guilty about keeping her up.
She makes a mental note to do something nice for Santana to make it up to her. Brittany doesn't know what to say in response, so instead of saying anything, she just cuddles in closer to Santana and closes her eyes. If she falls asleep then maybe Santana will too.
Santana doesn't get confused very easily, but right now she has no idea what the hell is going on. Everything seemed to be happening so fast. One minute she had gone to take Cassidy to the toilet whilst Brittany was still fast asleep, but when she came back she found a doctor and a nurse telling Brittany that she had to have emergency surgery. So yeah, Santana is very confused, especially since they've only been at the hospital for six hours.
"S'tana, what's wrong with my mama?" Cassidy asks innocently, tugging on Santana's hand to get the Latina's attention.
Reluctantly, Santana averts her attention away from Brittany and the hospital staff that are surrounding them and looks at her daughter. Bending down so that they are the same level, Santana gently places her hand on Cassidy's shoulder and sighs softly. She doesn't know what she's supposed to do or say because she has no idea what's going on either.
"Your Mama isn't feeling too good." She eventually explains softly. "She's sick so the people here need to look after her."
"Oh." The youngster breathes out, scrunching her eyebrows together in thought. "You is smart S'tana. You can look after my Mama and then she can come home."
Santana chuckles at her daughter's innocence before quickly glancing back to Brittany who is busy listening to something that the doctor is saying. She wishes that it was as simple as taking Brittany home and caring for her because she can tell just by looking at Brittany's face how worried she is, and the brunette wishes that there was something she could do to help.
"It's not as simple as that sweetie." Santana answers, squeezing the child's shoulder softly and shooting her a reassuring smile. "Don't worry though, everything is going to be fine."
Cassidy nods her head in response and pulls Cheeky the Monkey closer to her chest, and Santana takes this opportunity to stand back up. She watches as her daughter wanders over to the seat by the window and looks outside, and once she's satisfied knowing that her little girl is ok, she makes her way back over to Brittany's side. As soon as she's at the bedside, she feels Brittany's fingers around her wrist, and so she does the same to show her support. Brittany needs her right now, and she's going to be there for her no matter what.
"The ultrasound from earlier showed that I have a liquid cyst on my ovary, the doctors say that they want to operate as soon as possible." Brittany explains to the Latina, keeping her voice quiet so that their daughter doesn't overhear. "The surgery doesn't take long, it's only a few hours, but I'll have to stay in hospital for at least two a day because of recovery… that's if everything goes well."
"Everything is going to be fine, Britt." Santana replies, doing her best to reassure the blonde. "I'll be waiting here for you when you wake up, we'll figure everything out."
Brittany smiles weakly, and Santana knows that it's because she's worried about everything that's going on. She doesn't take it personally though, because she knows that if she was in Brittany's position then she would probably be acting one million times worse. "I need you to look after Cassidy until I'm out of here." Brittany speaks again, and Santana freezes completely because the possibility of having to look after Cassidy without Brittany never even entered her head. "When I go down for surgery, I want you to take Cassidy back to my place and give her a bath, breakfast and dress her in something that isn't a onesie. I've been texting my friend Kitty and she says that she and her girlfriend Marley will look after Cassidy for the day so that you can come back here. They're going to arrive at my place at around twelve o'clock, so it gives you an hour. Once they've arrived you are free to do whatever you want, you should probably go home and explain to Jessica what's going on and get something to eat. Then you can come back here whenever you feel like it. However, at night I'm going to need you to babysit Cassidy because both Kitty and Marley work in the evening. I don't mind if you want to take her back to your place or mine to sleep, but she needs you Santana."
The brunette takes a few seconds to process Brittany's words, but she eventually nods her head, knowing that her ex-girlfriend is right. Cassidy does need her. Out of the corner of her eye, Santana notices that one of the nurses have brought in a hospital gown for the blonde, signalling that Brittany will be going to the operating room at any moment.
"I'm going to take Cassidy out of the room just now so that she doesn't get upset, ok?" Santana tells Brittany, knowing that it's probably what is best for everyone. She doesn't want Cassidy getting upset because if she does, then Santana knows that she probably will too.
The blonde reluctantly nods her head, knowing that despite wanting to spend as much time with her daughter, she needs to do what's best for her. "Cassidy, come here for a second!" Santana calls, gaining the child's attention.
The toddler clambers up onto the bed beside her mother, which earns her some disapproving looks from the nurses around them, but Santana's challenging glare quickly makes them look away. "Cassidy, Santana is going to take you home for a little while so that you can play with some of your toys and then Kitty and Marley are going to come and play with you for the day, okay?"
"Okay Mama!" The youngster nods her head enthusiastically. "I see you later?"
"Yes baby, I'll see you later." Brittany confirms as she presses her lips to the little girl's forehead. "You don't need to worry about me because I'm going to be fine, so I just want you to enjoy your day with Santana, Kitty and Marley. I love you baby."
"I love you too Mama!" Cassidy replies as she throws her arms around her mother's neck and hugs her tightly. "Feel better soon!"
Santana parks her car outside of her apartment and sighs loudly as she rests her head on the steering wheel. She's so tired and all she wants to do is sleep, but Brittany will be coming out of surgery soon and she wants to be there for the blonde when she wakes up. Just like they had promised, Kitty and Marley showed up at twelve o'clock and after a brief encounter with them both, she left them and Cassidy so that she could come home and freshen up. Santana's glad that she's finally been able to meet some of Brittany's other friends, although she doesn't think that she's going to get along with Kitty very well. Marley seemed friendly enough, but Kitty was a completely different story. She thought that Sugar was protective over Brittany and Cassidy, but Kitty is ten times worse. However, she's glad that Brittany and Cassidy have support from people like these as it shows that they do care about them, and that eases the Latina's worry.
She's got about an hour to kill before she has to get back to the hospital (she's aware that in reality it's more like two hours, but she wants to be positive that she's going to be there when Brittany wakes up) so Santana decides that she'll change into something more comfortable and get some coffee and something to eat. There are other things she could be doing like showering and calling her work to let them know why she hasn't showed up today, but she's starving as she hasn't had anything to eat all day so she's sure that they can wait.
Santana's surprised to find the door of her apartment unlocked when she tries it, and she inwardly rolls her eyes because it means that Jessica is home and that she'll have to talk to her about this. She knows that she would have to at some point, but she'd much rather do it later. Groaning quietly to herself and muttering 'shit' under her breath, the brunette steps into the apartment and closes the door behind her.
Kicking off her shoes, Santana throws the car keys into the bowl next to the door before walking through the apartment. She can hear noises coming from the kitchen so she assumes that's where Jessica must be and so she decides to stop by there first. Today is stressful enough for her and the Latina doesn't want to do anything that will start another fight with her girlfriend, so she thinks that it's probably best if she explains everything that's going on first.
However, she freezes when she enters the kitchen because the person in there is definitely not Jessica. Her girlfriend has blonde hair and blue eyes, but this girl has auburn hair and emerald green eyes. For a minute, Santana thinks that she might be in the wrong apartment, which would be an easy mistake to make since she's so tired, but she quickly scans the room and spots the pile of washing and dishes that haven't been done and knows that it's not the case.
"Can I help you?" Santana asks, breaking the awkward silence in the room. If it weren't for the fact that she's so damn tired and emotional right now then she'd probably give the girl a verbal smack down, but she just doesn't have the energy. "You're in my apartment and I have no idea who you are so I want an explanation, now." She adds when the random girl doesn't say anything, and instead shoots her a confused look.
"Oh!" The girl suddenly exclaims in realisation. "You must be Jessica's roommate, it's so nice to finally meet you. I'm Caitlin." She introduces herself before reaching over and grabbing Santana's hand so that she can shake it.
"Caitlin…" Santana repeats slowly as she tries to make sense of everything that has just been said. The auburn haired girl obviously knows Jessica, but Santana still doesn't understand how or why she's in her apartment. "How and why are you in my apartment?" She questions, getting straight to the point.
"Did Jessica not tell you?" Caitlin inquires innocently, to which Santana shakes her head because if Jessica had told her whatever it was that Caitlin's referring to, then she wouldn't be so confused right now. "I'm waiting for Jessica to come home from work so that I can take her out for lunch." She explains happily. "She gave me a key to your apartment a few weeks ago, but told me that I could only come over on certain days and times because she had a really grumpy roommate. Although Santana, I don't think you're grumpy at all! You seem really nice!"
The Latina opens her mouth to say something but nothing comes out. She has no idea what's going on, but in the pit of her stomach she has a hung. A hunch that she hopes isn't true because even though her relationship with Jessica has been toxic for years, no one deserves to be cheated on. She wants to scream at the girl in front of her and demand answers, but she can't bring herself to do that. It's as if her mind had gone blank.
"I'm sorry, Caitlin. Jessica has never spoken about you before." She explains truthfully. "How do you know her and why would she give you a key to my apartment?"
"She's never spoken about me before?" She exclaims, the sadness and hurt clear in her voice. "I'm Caitlin, Jessica's girlfriend. She gave me a key to the apartment on our two year anniversary, which was a few weeks ago."
Santana's breath catches in her throat when her suspicions are confirmed. She doesn't know how she feels, hell she barely knows what's going on. Jessica's been cheating on her for over two years, and she had no idea that it was going in. She thinks that if she spent more time with Jessica and had actually lived their relationship instead of just existing in it, then she would of noticed that her girlfriend had been cheating on her. Maybe if she had actually put effort into their relationship then it wouldn't have even happened. Her whole mind is numb and she doesn't know what to do or say.
All she knows is that she needs to get out of the apartment. It's suffocating her.
It's obvious that this Caitlin girl has no clue that she too is Jessica's girlfriend, and if it weren't for the fact that Brittany was currently in hospital then she'd probably wait here until Jessica comes homes so that she can confront them both. However, she's got better things to do than prove that Jessica is a conniving bitch. She'll just have to do it another day.
"I need to leave just now because I have stuff to do." She explains, trying to keep her vice steady. "Tell Jessica that her girlfriend Santana says that she wants her out of her apartment by tomorrow and that she will call her later." With that, Santana spins on her heels and practically sprints out of the apartment, only slowing down to slip her shoes back on and grab her car keys.
As soon as she's in her car, Santana puts her seatbelt on and turns the radio up loud before beginning to drive towards the hospital. She decides to take the long way since she has time to kill and driving always helps her to clear her head. She is aware that she hasn't hasn't had the chance to eat it change her clothes, but she doesn't care. None of that is important to her any more. What is important is surrounding herself with people who care and appreciate her.
People like Brittany and Cassidy.
When Santana arrives at the hospital, she is told by one of the nurses that Brittany's operation was a success and that she is currently in the recovery room. The news makes Santana instantly relax and all of her previous thoughts about Jessica that were flooding her mind disappear completely. She's so relieved and grateful that Brittany's surgery went smoothly because she honestly doesn't know what she would have done if there were complications. The Latina is glad that she was distracted throughout the morning and that she never got the chance to think about the possibilities of the surgery going wrong, because she knows that if she had the opportunity to do so then she would have been a nervous wreck.
The nurse allows Santana to wait in Brittany's hospital room and so Santana follows the kind woman as she leads the way. Her stomach feels as if it's tied itself in multiple knows and she knows it's due to the anticipation of seeing Brittany again. She's just glad that the blonde is no longer in pain. Even after knowing Brittany for so long, the brunette has never seen her be in such discomfort, and when she witnessed it this morning she wanted to do everything that she could to stop it all.
Once inside of the room, the nurse disappears again so the Latina takes the opportunity to text Sugar, Kitty and Marley, Quinn, her own parents, and Brittany's parents to inform them of the success of the surgery. Everyone has been worried about the blonde, and Santana thinks it's only fair to let them know of the news as soon as possible. When she looks at her phone she notices that she has twelve text messages and eight missed calls from Jessica. She rolls her eyes at her now (even though she's not officially broken up with her yet) ex-girlfriend's attempt to contact her and ignores them. Letting everyone know that Brittany is safe and sound is by far the most important thing right now. Arguing with Jessica can wait.
Sending to Kitty, Sugar, Quinn, Mami and Susan Pierce: "Brittany's surgery was a success, she's now in recovery. The nurse says she is doing well. I will text you again when I know more information."
Once she has sent the text, Santana plays with the phone in her hands as she hums out loud in thought. She's contemplating on calling Sugar and updating her on everything that has happened because despite not necessarily getting along with the woman, the Latina knows that it's the least she could do. Sugar plays an important role in Brittany's life and Santana understands that just now is a stressful time for her. Deciding to be a good person, Santana scrolls through her contacts until she finds Sugar's number and presses the call button.
"Santana? Is everything okay? I just got your text." Sugar greets, picking up on the second ring. "Is Brittany okay? Is Cassidy okay? Do they need me to come home because if they do I'll get on the next plane to New York."
The worry is clear in Sugar's voice, and Santana knows that she has done the right thing by calling her. Whether she likes it or not, Sugar is a part of Brittany and Cassidy's family, and the pair of them are just going to have to learn to get along.
"Hey Sugar." Santana greets in return when the woman on the other end finally stops talking. "You don't need to worry, everything is fine. I just thought that I'd give you a call since Brittany is still in recovery and I can give you more information this way than I can through text.
I obviously don't know the exact details, but the nurse says that the operation was a complete success. She is going to have to stay in hospital overnight for recovery, so I'm going to stay the night at your place and look after Cassidy. Cassidy is also doing really well, she doesn't really know what's happening, but Kitty and Marley are currently looking after her and they arre going to bring her up to visit Brittany before they go to work.
I'm not too sure if Brittany wants you to cut the Christmas holiday with your family short, but I wouldn't book a plane ticket just yet. When she's awake I'll get her to call you and you can discuss that with her, but obviously I can stay over and look after her and Cassidy so that she won't be alone."
The line goes silent for a second and Santana hears Sugar sigh and mutter to herself, which confuses the Latina. She thought that Sugar would be relieved and grateful to know that she didn't have to cut her Christmas with her family short. After all, it's supposed to be the last one with her mother.
"You really care about them, don't you?" Sugar eventually speaks, her voice softer than it's ever been before. If Santana's being honest, it surprises her a little bit.
"Of course I do." She answers just as softly. "Despite everything that has happened, they are my family and I'm always going to care about them. I've never stopped caring about Brittany." The Latina is pretty sure that she's confessed too much, but she doesn't really care because her emotions are currently all over the place, and she has a feeling that Sugar's are too. She wants Brittany's best friend to know that she's capable of caring after the blonde and Cassidy. She wants to prove it to everyone.
"Look Santana, I'm honestly not trying to act like a bitch right now because I feel like we're bonding and it's great, but as we both know Brittany is already dealing with some issues and I'm worried that this operation is going to make it all worse." Sugar confesses and Santana's ear suddenly perk up in interest. "I know that you are more than capable of looking after Brittany and Cassidy, and I don't doubt you at all. I can tell that you care about them a lot, and honestly I'm so glad that you're there to support them both right now. However, if Brittany goes to her really bad place again because of this operation... I just... it's not a pretty sight. I've probably said too much. Shit."
"Wait, Sugar what is that supp-" Santana's cut off by the phoneline going dead, and she furrows her eyebrows together in deep thought. However, she doesn't have time to dwell over the conversation too much because seconds later, a very wide awake Brittany is wheeled into the room.
"Santanaaaaaaaaaa!" The blonde exclaims with a dopey smile on her face when she spots the Latina sitting on the spare chair in the room. "Saaaaaaaaaaaaan!"
Santana chuckles in amusement as she watches the doctors and nurses hook Brittany back up to some machines. She's aware that the anaesthetic still hasn't worn off which is what's causing Brittany to act so loopy. She finds it kind of cute.
"Hey Britt, I'm here." Santana replies, smiling in return when blue eyes on her. She wants to get up and walk over to the side of the bed, but she doesn't want to get in the way of the nurses. "You should try and get some sleep, your body has gone through a lot."
"Nooooooo!" Brittany protests with a pout. "I wanna stay awake with youuuu."
Arguing with a drugged up Brittany doesn't sound very appealing so instead of pushing it, the brunette turns her attention to the doctor so that he can explain everything that happened. Santana's shocked to discover that due to the liquid cyst being so big that it wrapped around her ovary and crushed it (which explains why Brittany had been in so much pain), it also had to be removed. However, luckily for the blonde, due to her already having a scar from her caesarean section they were able to re-open that wound which meant that she had no new scars on her body.
Once the doctor is happy with the condition that Brittany is in, the crowd of people gathered in her room trickle out one by one with a promise to be back later. Santana is glad that they're gone because it means that there is less distractions for Brittany, meaning that there's a greater chance of her growing bored and falling asleep.
"Saaaaaaaaaaaaaaan, come here!" Brittany demands, successfully breaking the brunette out of her thoughts. "I wanna talk to you."
The Latina does what she's told and she walks over to the bed, taking her chair with her. She positions it right next to Brittany and then takes a seat, crossing one of her legs over the other and placing her clasped hands on top. "We can talk for a little while, but then I want you to try and get some rest, okay?" She compromises, but Brittany doesn't look too sure. "I promise I'll be here when you wake up. Is that a deal?" She adds in an attempt to convince her.
"Okayyyy." Brittany sighs with a nod of her head, clearly not impressed with the idea. "What did you do today? Is Cassidy okay?""
"She's fine, Britt. Marley and Kitty are looking after her just now and then she's going to come up and visit you once you've had some sleep." She reassures the woman, noticing as she yawns quietly. "Are you tired?"
"Nope!" Brittany insists, popping the 'p' before giggling to herself. "What did you do today? Did you see Jessica?"
Santana knows that Brittany's question is completely innocent, but she can't help but feel a little hurt because of it. "Uhm, no not really. I... we... I found out that she was cheating on me." She admits, hanging her head slightly as the heat rushes to her cheeks. "Obviously it's over between us, but I've not officially ended it because I've not seen her."
It's then that Santana realises that talking about her break up isn't as bad as she initially thought it was going to be. She had to admit, it was kind of embarrassing to announce that she'd been cheated on but she knows that Brittany isn't going to judge her for that. She's the least judgemental person she knows.
"Oh, Saaan!" Brittany's face falls as she gasps at the news and it looks like she's about to cry. "Why would she do that? She was so lucky to have you. You're so beautiful and kind and caring and funny." She reaches out and grabs onto the Latina's hand and pulls it into her lap, clasping their fingers together innocently. She wants to show the brunette that she's here to support her. "You're the bestest girlfriend I ever had and she shouldn't have cheated on you because she'll never find someone as great as you again."
Santana's eyes widen at Brittany's confession and she's glad that the blonde is kind of spaced out right now, because she's sure that if she wasn't, this conversation would be incredibly awkward. Although she's almost one hundred percent certain that if Brittany was her normal self then none of that would have been said.
"Thanks, Britt, but I don't think I was that good of a girlfriend to her." She forces a smile onto her face as she admits the truth. She knows that she's not been a good girlfriend, but she never cheated on Jessica so she doesn't understand why her ex-girlfriend done it to her. She wishes that Jessica had just broken up with her instead. Santana notices Brittany fighting (and failing) to keep her eyes open and it causes her to chuckle to herself. "You should try and sleep now, I'll stay right here nect to you."
The room goes silent and when Santana's satisfied that Brittany is going to try and sleep, she too closes her eyes in an attempt to get some rest. She enjoys the peaceful sound of silence however it's interrupted a few minutes later just as she's about to fall asleep by Brittany's mumbling. The blonde has always been one to mumble things just before she dozes off, and so Santana opens her eyes and turns her head to see what's going on.
"IloveyouSannn."
Santana has a feeling that she's going to get no sleep now.
