Unspoken
It had been a long night. It took awhile to get Caroline to calm down, but she had every reason to be panicking. She was sobbing, wondering why Elena would do this to her, but they explained that it was just someone that looked like her. They realized that this was part of Katherine's plan, but what that plan was exactly they didn't know.
Jade checked Caroline's chart and saw that she was due to be discharged the day after next. Even though she was off, Jade promised to come back the next night and expedite her paper work so she could get out while it was dark. The Salvatore brothers were going to work on getting her a daylight ring in the meantime. Unfortunately, with her mom being present unlike Kelly, Caroline couldn't disappear and learn from them like Vicki had. This was going to be a lot more complicated and all Jade could think of on her way home that morning was what to do about Matt.
"Morning sunshine," Vicki greeted her when she came into the house, her and Matt preparing to go to school. "Whoa," she observed Jade's appearance. "What happened to you?"
"Oh jeez Vic," Jade said, feeling her head as Matt came downstairs now. "You're on fire."
"Huh?" Vicki asked in confusion.
"I think you have the flu," Jade continued. "You better skip school today." Vicki continued to look at her sister in confusion and Jade nodded at the stairs. Rolling her eyes, Vicki went back up them.
"Any chance you think I'm sick too?" Matt smirked at her. "I have a geometry test today I'd love to miss." Jade felt his forehead.
"Nope, you're fine," she opened the door for him. "Nice try Matty, but good luck on your test."
"Yeah, yeah," he brushed her off. "See you at the carnival tonight?"
"Mhmm," she nodded, closing the door on him now. When she turned around, Vicki came back downstairs, coming over closer and looking at her eyes closely.
"Are you high?" Vicki asked.
"No," Jade protested, pulling away from her and Vicki gave her a look. "I just had a long night, that's all."
"Uh huh," Vicki said skeptically, looking her over. "And why were you so eager to get Matty out of here?"
"Because something...happened last night," Jade started off. "And I really need to talk to you about it."
"Not with you and Mason!" Vicki gasped.
"What?" Jade asked in confusion. "No...what...I..." She was so shocked by the question. "Why do you think that?"
"I don't know," Vicki shrugged. "Maybe because Damon was all Mr. Insecurity about it at the grille last night."
"What?" Jade asked now; she thought Damon was just joking about being jealous.
"Well, can you blame him?" Vicki asked back. "I mean, you've seen Mason," she said suggestively. "Plus, with this whole werewolf thing-"
"Ok, I can't have this talk right now," Jade shook her head. "Look, we have to tell Matt what's going on." Vicki was the one shocked now.
"What happened to yesterday when you didn't want to tell him anything?" Vicki asked. She didn't want to tell her brother anything, though it did raise the question on what she was going to do when they were both graduated from high school in a few years. She was going to have to disappear at some point and never see him again, otherwise he'd still see her as an eighteen year old.
"That all changed when Caroline turned into a vampire last night," Jade told her and Vicki's mouth dropped open.
"Wait, she died?" Vicki asked, knowing Damon had given Caroline his blood to heal her. "When?"
"Katherine apparently showed up, pretending to be Elena," Jade said, realizing the problems with that were only starting. "It's been hard enough keeping you and Damon from him," Jade continued. "But now, I'm a werewolf, so is his best friend. His ex is dating a vampire, and his current girlfriend just became one."
"Yeah, but how do we tell him?" Vicki asked. "What, do you just want me to show him my fangs?"
"No," Jade protested. "But, we have to..." She trailed off as there was a knock at the door, wondering who it could be. Thinking it might be Damon, she was surprised to see Mason standing there. "Mason, hey."
"Can I come in?" he asked and she nodded, letting him into the house. "I just wanted to make sure you were ok, after last night."
"Oh, I'm fine," she shrugged it off. "New vampires aren't exactly a new thing around this town."
"Yeah, but you shouldn't have to be used to dealing with that," Mason said now and she gave him a look.
"Let's not have that talk, all right?" Jade said to him.
"I'm just saying," he started off, and Vicki came around the corner to the door. "Hey Vic, haven't seen you in awhile. How have you been?"
"All right," she said sarcastically. "Ya know, just one of the vampires Jade's getting used to dealing with." He had known about Damon and Stefan, but hadn't been around long enough to figure out Vicki was a vampire now to.
"I didn't mean anything by that," Mason said lightly. Truthfully, though werewolves and vampires were supposed to hate each other, he didn't find himself caring that much about vampires. He only really cared that Jade was potentially in danger because of it.
"We're just trying to figure out how to tell Matt everything," Jade said now. "I'm glad you stopped by, I just need today with my sister."
"Yeah, of course," Mason nodded, turning back to the door. When he opened it, Damon had been just about to knock. "Hey," Mason nodded at him as he left.
"Hi," Damon said back, watching him leave before coming into the house. "So," he said as Jade shut the door. "I see your lost puppy found its way over here."
"Don't do that," Jade rolled her eyes, walking into the living room with Vicki and Damon followed. "If I wanted to sleep with Mason, I would have by now."
"Well, those are the words every boyfriend wants to hear," he said sarcastically and she rolled her eyes again, taking a seat next to her sister. "Are you all right, after last night?"
"Caroline didn't do anything to me," Jade shrugged. "But, she does have me thinking we need to tell Matt what's going on."
"And I think she's crazy," Vicki added now and Jade gave her a look. "What if he tells Sheriff Forbes?"
"Look, he's going to freak out," Damon agreed with Vicki. "But, you're his sisters," Damon agreed now with Jade. "He's not going to want anything to happen to you."
"Ok, fine," Vicki gave in. "But, how are we even going to tell him? You only know about me because I bit you."
It was true, the news never came out well. Vicki had bit Jade, exposing herself and the Salvatores. Elena did her fair share of research, finding out about Stefan and confronting him about it. Jeremy only knew about Vicki because he had read his sister's diary. Jade didn't want to wait around for Caroline to hurt Matt though for him to find out about vampires.
"I don't know," Jade admitted, then looked at Damon. "How were you going to tell me?" Damon was quiet. "You were going to tell me, right?"
"Yeah," he assured to and he had planned to. "But, I kept putting it off because I didn't know how."
"We just have to sit him down and tell him," Jade said and Vicki half laughed at her.
"And what do you think, he's just going to believe us?" Vicki asked.
"I don't know what else to do Vic," Jade sighed. "He can't just not know, especially with Caroline."
Vicki and Jade debated for hours on what to do and how to tell Matt about them. As of now, they didn't have any decision made. With the sun setting, Damon drove Jade to the hospital so she could discharge Caroline. They had Caroline planning to tell Liz that she was spending the night with Elena so they could at least spend one night with her teaching her what they could and get her a day light ring from Bonnie.
"Hey Jade," her friend Allison said to her when she came up to the desk. "I thought you were off tonight."
"I am," she nodded. "I just wanted to visit Caroline." She paused. "Actually, I just ran into her mom, is there anyway we could get her discharged tonight?" She rolled her eyes. "There's some founding family thing in the morning or whatever, I don't know."
"Ugh, I would," Allison told her, since it would lighten her workload for the night as she'd have one less person to check on. "But we're slammed right now, I don't think I could get around to the paperwork."
"Oh, I can do it," Jade volunteered.
"Are you sure?" Allison asked, pulling out Caroline's folder.
"Yeah, I don't mind," she promised, sitting with her now at the desk to do the papers.
Jade finished up the papers as Allison left for rounds, leaving her alone in that part of the hall. Filing the papers, Jade went over to Caroline's room where she was surprised to already see her up, dressed, and packing away her things so she could leave; Jade realized though she was probably eager to get out and she also probably heard Jade talking to Allison about getting her out.
"Ready to go?" Jade asked.
"Yesss," Caroline nodded excitedly, zipping her bag shut.
"You look cute," Jade observed, a little surprised since they were just going to the Salvatores, but that was Caroline she guessed.
"Thanks," Caroline grinned. "I'm going to the carnival to see Matt." Jade looked at her in confusion.
"No, you're coming with me to Damon and Stefan's," Jade reminded her.
"No," Caroline said, coming closer to Jade now. "I decided that I want to see my boyfriend, so I'm gonna go to the carnival."
"It's not safe Caroline," Jade insisted.
"The sun's not out," Caroline rolled her eyes.
"I meant for Matt and the others," Jade clarified and Caroline rolled her eyes again. "It's not safe for them to be around you right now."
"I didn't hurt anyone here all day," Caroline said like it was obvious.
"Yeah, because Stefan babysat you," Jade snapped. "Look, just-" She was cut off as Caroline grabbed her around her neck, squeezing tight around her throat as she slammed her against the wall.
"I can do whatever I want now," Caroline told her, her grip tightening. "And there is nothing that you or anyone else can-" She stopped as Damon pried her off Jade, throwing her to the side. While Damon was busy helping Jade to her feet, Caroline sped off without anyone stopping her.
"Where'd she go?" Jade asked, gasping for air.
"Don't know, don't care right now," Damon said simply, checking her over. "Are you all right?"
"Fine," she nodded, her breathing slowing down as it got back to normal.
"You're not hurt?" he asked in concern.
"No, no," she insisted. "I'm fine." He pushed her hair to the side, looking at her neck.
"You're bruising already," he said, biting his wrist then offering it to her which she drank to heal her bruises. "I'm taking you home."
"No way," she protested. "She's on her way to the carnival, she's going to see Matt."
"And she's pissed off at you," Damon reminded her. "Her emotions are off the chart right now, she might try to kill you."
"Matt's out there, I don't care," Jade argued.
"I do," Damon snapped at her and she stopped. "Please Jade."
"Fine," Jade groaned in agreement.
Leaving the hospital immediately, Damon took Jade home while he went ahead and called Stefan and Elena so they could track down Caroline at the carnival. Jade kept trying to argue with him that she should be allowed to go too, especially if Elena was there because she wasn't a vampire either. But Damon said he didn't care what Elena did and that he was worried more for Jade than he was about Matt. It annoyed Jade, but it was a simple fact that her safety came first to him. As he pulled into her driveway though, he wasn't too pleased with who was sitting on her front step and she could tell that.
"Be nice," Jade urged, spotting Mason on the porch. "And, be safe."
"I will," Damon promised. "I'll call you when we find her."
"K," Jade nodded, kissing him once before getting out of the car. Crossing her arms over herself in the cool night air, she went over to sit with Mason on the front step.
"Hope he's not leaving because I'm here," Mason offered and she shook her head.
"Caroline's disappeared," Jade explained. "They're all gonna go try to find her."
"Do they even know where to start?" he asked.
"She's going to the carnival to see Matt," she started off.
"I'm surprised you're not going out there too," he commented with a smile and she smiled back.
"Yeah, well, I was going to sneak out after he dropped me off," Jade went on. "But, now I seem to have a babysitter, so..." That made him laugh. "What are you doing here anyway?"
"I told Tyler about what's going on," he explained. "Thought you could use some advice on how to talk to Matt."
"Why are you so happy?" Damon asked. They had all split up at the carnival to find Caroline and hopefully Matt before she did. He paired off with Vicki and Stefan went with Elena.
"I'm not exactly happy," Vicki clarified, though she was smiling. "It just...feels good."
"What exactly?" Damon asked curiously.
"Everyone thought I'd be the one you'd have to chase down," Vicki explained. "That I'd be the one to lose it, cause I used to use and stuff." She shrugged. "Turns out it's the peppy cheerleader you guys had to worry about going off the deep end."
"Guess that would be a good feeling," Damon mumbled, looking around for any sign of Caroline.
"What's got you in a mood?" Vicki asked. Since she'd turned and he helped her, not to mention him dating Jade, they'd gotten to be pretty good friends.
"Um, do you see what we're doing right now?" he asked sarcastically and got an eye roll back.
"So, it doesn't have to do with you leaving Jade at the house with Mason?" Vicki asked.
"Nope," Damon said simply.
"So, you're not afraid they're gonna have some crazy sixth sense werewolf thing," Vicki continued. "Instinct or whatever kicks in, and they start making a bunch of little werewolf babies?"
"What the hell is the matter with you?" Damon asked Vicki.
"I should be asking you that," Vicki pointed out and he rolled his eyes now. "I mean, yeah, Mason's...wow," she laughed. "I'd totally-"
"You don't make people feel better that often, do you?" Damon asked sarcastically.
"Jade's with you," Vicki went on, ignoring what he said. "You gotta know how much she loves you, right?" Damon stopped and looked at her.
"Jade loves me?"
"What, she's never told you that before?" she scoffed and Damon just looked at her. "Oh my God, she's never told you that before?!"
"In her defense, I never told her either," Damon said, continuing on now.
"You've NEVER told my sister you LOVE her?!" Vicki snapped and he shrugged. "You guys went out for two years!"
"On and off," he shrugged.
"Oh my God, I can't believe it!" Vicki practically squealed. "Well, you have to tell her. Like, tonight."
"Do you smell that?" Damon asked.
"Oh, don't change the subject," Vicki shoved his shoulder.
"No, Vic," he said seriously and she stopped.
"Blood," she said and they both took off in that direction.
Following the scent and, eventually, the sounds of panic Vicki and Damon found Caroline and Matt. They had gone off away from the carnival to make out in the parking lot behind the school. During their kissing, Caroline bit him, and lost it at the scent of his blood. Matt had been able to shove her away and now Caroline was panicking and apologizing, all while sobbing. Matt was trying to leave, but she kept blocking him.
"Why did I do that?" Caroline sobbed as Damon came over to her.
"Matty," Vicki rushed over to him, pulling him to the side to check him. At the sight and smell of his blood, her veins started to stick out around her eyes, but she took a deep breath to control it.
"What the hell?" Matt demanded. "Your face was like hers!"
"Matty-"
"What the hell is going on?!"
Damon called Jade with what happened, sending Caroline to the house with Stefan and Elena. He was bringing Matt and Vicki home. Matt had been flipping out at first, but slowly began to calm down, mostly because he didn't want to draw too much attention. He had known something was up between his sisters for weeks, they had been constantly jumpy around him. There was a secret, he just didn't know what and had never anticipated this.
Caroline had left in tears and Vicki tried to explain as best she could. She told him who was a vampire, that it only happened to her recently and that while Jade wasn't a vampire, she was actually a werewolf through her dad. That was all he could process right now though. Even though he calmed himself, he was slowly shutting down from the shock.
"Matty, hey," Jade said as the three of them were coming into the house. "Can we-"
"I can't Jay," he cut her off quickly and he could tell it hurt her feelings a little. "Just...not tonight," he added gently. He was angry, but then again, he would have lied too. "I'm gonna go to bed."
"Night," she told him as he left and Vicki went up soon too. "Thanks," Jade was saying to Damon now. "For finding them."
"I promised to take care of you," Damon told her. "You and your family." She smiled at him. "Look, Jade, um...there's something I should have said to you a really long time ago," he commented with a laugh. "I just never-" Jade cut him off with a kiss.
"I love you too," she told him with a grin, kissing him again.
