A Lifelong secret
Chapter 10: The question why
"Harry, for some reason he had the same expression on her face as she had. They only returned to Hogwarts last night, but it was very sure they hadn't been speaking. Not about the idea to start a group of fighters or a thought that haunted Harry's mind: Why had Leyla left the night his mother died? Had she heard her pleads for help or did something else occur in that night? The question of Hermione's father might have been on Ron and Hermoines mind, it was no where occupying the mind that was Harry Potters.
"Harry, what's the matter?" Hermione reached for his hand. "Is it something that was said or are you worrying about the classes?"
"I'm worrying about your intentions." Harry turned to her. "And I'm thinking to much about a certain thing Thor said."
"About the night your parents died." Hermione turned away from Harry. "It's normal to think about that, I would wonder what would have happened if..."
"I'm not thinking what if, Hermione." Harry turned away. "Don't you think there are just a littl bit coincidences in this whole story. She left the night my parents died never to return, why did she choose that night too leave?"
"According to Thor she left more nights..." Hermione replied "Too fight.."
"The thing is: she always returned." Harry stood up. "What made his halloween night so special she wouldn't return? Sure Voldemort's defeat has nothing to do with it."
"What are you subjecting, Harry?" Hermione turned away; "That my mother turned on yours, or something? That she went out when the danger was gone? That she was hardly a fighter?"
"I think she might have felt my mom's calls for help..." Harry sat down. "And just maybe she was an altering factor on that night..."
"Harry, your mom is dead;"
"I'm not so sure of that anymore."
Harry admitted that saying those words to Hermione were difficult, he was sure that Ron was telling Hermione he was insane right now and that they didn't need to feed his need for a mother and father that were alive. He would alsoo be talking about the crazy uncle that made him believe that his mother was still alive or maybe he really was crazy;
"mate.." he heard Ron's voice on the back ground and turned around to face him.
"Ron..." he moved on as Ron followed his steps.
"look, this is Hermione's quest." Ron explained. "We have no prove that her mother is dead, while we have more than one witness that places your mom dead on the scene. You're pulling yourself up at this one thing."
"I've never wondered why they told me she died..." Harry turned away. "There is this tiny chance that the story we've heared is one created by Hermione's mom, to protect mine."
"Wouldn't that be cruel man?" Ron shook his head. "Would you love a mom that didn't tell she was alive or would you go for the one that gave her life to save you? Because you're not changing reality, you are changing the personality of your mom..."
"I wouldn't love her any less..." Harry replied "She must have had her reasons to keep herself hidden for all this years. She must have!"
"you do know it's going to be pretty hard to find out if you're mom is actually alive or dead?" Ron paused "I mean unless you see if there's a body in her grave?"
"not a solution." Harry replied "There could have been a spell over her grave and are you actually willing to dig up a dead body?"
"no." Ron smiled "So we find proof, proof of people who were at the scene.."
"The question isn't how to find this people.." Hermione was standing behind them. "The question is how will we find out who was at the scene.."
"Hagrid..." Ron said with his finger pointed to the sky.
"The thing is that Hagrid is present." Hermione smiled "It seems that Hagrid or Dumbledore would have all the answers."
"What about Snape?" Ron stared at Harry open mouthed.
"How are we going to find Snape willing to that?" Hermione replied "Or should I all remind you that it's not easy to get him alone and even than he won't answer to people he hates."
"Can't you..." Ron made a movement with his hand that was his way of saying mind power. "use your mind power." "you are very well aware that I'm NOT in controll of these powers." Hermione turned aay from him. "How can I use this powers on Snape if I don't know how they work."
"We shouldn't put that burden on you, Hermione." Harry replied "Plus toying with Snape's mind is not going to get us what we want. Toying with his feelings might..."
"Ï am not willing to play dirty to figure out the truth..." Hermione turned away. "Using someone's feelings is playing dirty, Harry."
"So what are we going to do?" Ron turned away. "We would be lucky to find Snape without his Slytherin fan club."
"not if we get detention." Harry raised an eyebrow.
"I would be destroying my perfect ' no detention' list." Hermione replied "What do you think he'll be able to say about my mother, your mother."
"okay, we might just start thinking about that fighting club..." Ron replied. "How will we be able to pull that off?"
Hermione turned around, she knew that getting detention was the only way to get Snape alone. It would be the only way they could talk about the things they needed to talk about, yet she was scared for what was in Snape's mind. She was even more scared about not figuring out her powers. Her mother had figured them out, so she could figure them out. Why wasn't her mom here to explain everything to her? It would make her life that much easier. Why was her mom not supporting her? She squinted her eyes in a way to make something happen. How did those powers work? How did her mom make those flowers appear everywhere.
Maybe Snape would be able to answer those questions, if he wanted too. And even if he wanted too, maybe he wouldn't give her the answers she needed.
"Hermione;;;" Professor McGonagall stared at her. "What's the matter?"
"It seems the more answers I receive, the more questions arrive too. How is that fair? I mean why did my mom choose that Halloween night to leave Asgard?"
"Sometimes the truth needs effort..." Hermione turned away. "How did my mom controll her magic?"
"you might want to ask that to the person who knows your mom by heart..." McGonagall moved the glasses on her nose. "Severus Snape."
"Are you saying he needs the answers I need?"
"I am saying you both need answers to find peace." McGonagall released a smile. "The very idea of you could bring peace to him."
"Why?"
"Leyla sometimes took away things from people, memories. When she really loved someone, she didn't leave fake realities. She left dark spots, moments that only your mind can fill." She turned awya from Hermione. "I seem to have some pretty recent ones. Even some that date back to yesterday. You must imagine how cruel the mind can gets, when someone convinces you, you could be guilty of murder."
"So you're saying she was here?" Hermione shook her head. "my mom?"
"That or you have grown more like her than you would like to admit..."
Hermione stared to the front of the classroom during potions class, she had never given Snape another look. Not even a thought about the pain that must be hiding behind the heavy and stern outside look. Did he hide pain behind his mask of cruelness? Or was he simple cruel because he liked it. She thought bout her mom, about the the holes she left in people's mind. Why would she hurt people like that? Was she scared of dead or scared to be found? Or was she on some secret mission that would never end.
Did Snape really think that he might have killed Leyla. And if he did, she could hardly imagine the pain it must give him. How he spent many sleepless night just filling up the holes. The holes Leyla had left out so called love. It could be really difficult to not know what happened to the woman he obviously loved. He loved her a lot, that was something Hermione could notice through any words.
She had never watched Snape as a person before, but right now she was watching him as the person he was. A person that could very well give her the truth she needed to know and in exchange she could give him the peace of mind that he was not a murderer, not of the love of his life anyway.
"pss.." Harry moved his hand from the other side of the classroom almost telling her to do something that could get them in trouble. Something that would make them end up in a room alone with Snape, something Harry had done a million times, yet now it seemed more of a mission impossible. When you are trying to get in trouble, you hardly ever really got in trouble, since people seemed to have some kind of psychic radar for it
"Blow it up!" Ron whispered from the other side of the room. How was Hermione going to screw up a potion, she had never once done that before. Snape would see right trough it. Did Snape actually see right trough anything?
She pointed to him, almost obligating him to blow up the entire classroom, but still coming out alive and kicking.
"That's normal." Ron mouthed. "It has..."
"Shut up, Weasley." Snape said with a high sounding voice. "Ten points from Gryffindor for talking out of line. I subject to you Granger, that you don't respond."
Hermione turned to Ron not daring to say a word, she had to admit that everything that happened didn't change the fear she had for professor Snape. He was a scary man that was feared by most of the students that were not from Slytherin, it was no secret that he liked the students of his own house more. 'What do I need to do?' Hermione thought, she needed to do something that was considered against the rules. She almost wanted to squint her eyes, make something happen. 'Calm yourself, it's not that difficult, Hermione' her mind said. 'not that difficult.'
As her mind went farther than it should, a soft bang came from her potion.
"Granger!" Snape was standing behind her, there was black smoke coming from her potion. Something that had never happened to her before, this was a stage right before exploding. She noticed how Snape moved the cauldron away from her. His dark eyes were staring at her in shame, his thin lips trembled.
"Potter, Granger and why not you Weasley..." he smiled "you have detention, you can clean up the mess miss Granger potion has made..."
"Great job, Hermione." Harry whispered.
Hermione moved away the dirty cauldron in an effort to remove any dirt from the desk, she stared down and moved the cauldron in the water. Ron was right next to her as their eyes went to Severus Snape who was grading papers at his desk.
"Go..." he whispered "Hermione..."
"What do I do?"
"Quiet, miss Granger, mister Weasley and Potter."
"he wasn't saying anything." Hermione stared at him in confidence. Snape's eyes were surprised, he hadn't expected to get a reaction. "So you can't say he should be quiet."
"Granger..."
"We need to talk to you professor Snape." Hermione spoke "About Leyviena McGonagall and about.."
"So, I don't see how that is any of your business, miss Granger." Snape turned away. "I would like it if you cleaned up and left this building."
"She's my mother and I will find her..." Hermione's eyes became angry. "I don't care what things you know about my mom, I have every right to know."
"I think you don't need to know more about your mother." Snape turned away. "I know you will ask after her powers and after who she was, yet you don't need to know. Don't become like your mother."
"Why not?"
"Because those powers you want to know so badly..." Snape turned to her. "They don't come with a rulebook, you'll be screwing with people's minds before you know it. Deciding what's in their best intrest, or don't you agree about that? Your mother decided in your best interest, she never thought of who she hurt in the process or of how bad she got hurt."
"What do you mean about who she hurt?"
"is that all you got from it Granger?" Snape pointed his wand to the cauldron. It cleaned itself in the next seconds. He returned the wand to its pocket. "All this black holes miss Granger, you might not know what you're capable of. Leyla said her powers were about what she wanted, it worked easy. Her power came like nature, like water."
"You did not kill my mom!" Hermione yelled in anger.
"The week you were born is one of those holes." Snape turned away. "There was blood on my hands, I could have harmed her in so many ways. Don't protect someone who would hurt a kind soul like your mother."
"When is the last time you saw Leyla?" Ron turned to Snape. "Really saw her..."
"That December." Snape stared down. "I think..."
"How about my mom?" Harry turned to Snape. "I mean her body."
"When I came to the scene, they said her body had blasted away." Snape's face became paler. "They said, she was scattered all over the house. They didn't recover anything, her coffin is empty."
"So..." Ron stared down. "Are you saying there was no body?"
"That is what I am saying..."
"There was no body." Hermione turned away. "Scattered al around the house, it's starting to look like a mystery in a book. Not too easy to solve. So your mom could be alive and my mom too. Maybe they are together doing god knows what. What did he mean about powers being as fluent as water?"
"It comes naturally..." Harry replied "It take less attention than anything. It comes naturally."
"Do you think Snape is the one that harmed mom?" Hermione turned away. "Do you think so? Did he know she was pregnant, without actually knowing it. Is that possible?"
"I think so..." Ron turned away.
"Off course it is possible." Harry replied " Does that bring us to the mystery about your father?"
"Sirius?" Hermione stared to the floor. "Snape? Or who else was in her life? Maybe even Voldemort, maybe he found out that he could create a powerful child, maybe I'm his."
"There are more people that could be.." Harry turned to her. "Remus Lupin, they were friendly. Maybe they were together. I am sure that you are not Voldemort's blood..."
"you think so?"
"We'll figure out who your father is." Harry and Ron hugged Hermione. "We'll find both of our mothers."
"I hope so."
